Okay, the General Anime DVD Discussion thread is all good and all, but I know for a fact that there are R2 and R3 DVD collectors here on AN. The purpose of this thread I think should be to discuss upcoming and current R2/R3 DVD releases, and/or post reviews of them (with pics of course :P ). I know that many people may think it is a pain to post in 2 threads, but this way people can check this thread for old reviews and stuff without having to dig through the General thread.

While I'm somewhat of a "noob" to the market, I'll post what I can. I also think that this thread will be important in posting deals+sales and whatnot for R2s/R3s. Sometimes I miss those while browsing through the General thread.

I'll start with some notable links so people can view them on the first page of the thread:

Where to buy R2 DVDs:

-A m a z o n Japan (http://www.amazon.co.jp) (use the product codes from CD Japan to search for listings, unless you know Japanese. Will ship to the US.)
-CD Japan (http://www.cdjapan.co.jp). Will ship to the US.
-Yes Asia (http://www.yesasia.com). Will ship to the US. Free shipping on orders over $39.
-Anime Jungle (http://www.animejungle.com). Will ship to the US.
-AMO Tokyo (http://www.amotokyo.com). Will ship to the US.
-Yahoo Auctions Japan (http://auctions.yahoo.co.jp/0-category.html). Most sellers will not ship to the US. You need to use a deputy service to get items from here, unless you're fluent in Japanese and have a residence in Japan.

Where to buy R3 DVDs:

-Korean DVDs (http://www.koreandvds.com). Will ship to the US.
-Yes Asia (http://www.yesasia.com). Will ship to the US. Free shipping on orders over $39.
-DVD Heaven (http://www.dvdheaven.com). Will ship to the US.

Feel free to post reviews at your leisure. Or if you want to just talk about upcoming, current, or older releases, feel free to do so. Try to keep the thread clean and post relevant information only. I'd like to see this thread become a great source of info for R2 and R3 collectors.

If you're new to the R2/R3 market or are simply curious, make a different thread. Use all the info in this thread to find the answer to your question. Thus I encourage you to search on any of the aforementioned sites for info on what you're looking for, instead of posting here first.

With any luck we can make this a successful source for information. Thus, I'd like to keep "what are you going to buy?" discussions to a minimum, unless they have unique information pertaining to the topic at hand. This way people won't have to dig through pages upon pages of discussion and chit-chat to find the information they need. If we need a thread to do this in, I guess we can either post in the General thread or make a new thread for R2/R3 chitchat/"what are you buying?" posts. I'm not saying don't post what you're buying, but just to keep the thread clean, we should keep this to a minimum. I really like the idea of having a thread that I can go to daily/weekly for pertinent R2/R3 information and reviews, I don't know about the rest of you. :)

edit: links fixed, no longer censored.

I like the idea of having the R2/R3 discussion separate from the R1. I hope to contribute some reviews, but I have to fix a few computer problems first...

Someone should make this a permanent thread! R2 and R3 discussions would be a good thing to have. Like with releases, reviews, and what else would all be useful stuff. Looking forward to some reviews from members here, too.

Well if us R2/R3 collectors post frequently here, it'll be just as good as the General Anime DVD Discussion thread, only for R2s and R3s only!

I guess I'll put up my first in-depth review...

Kare Kano R3 Box Set Review

Pic 1 (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v439/sys2021/karekanoR3box1.jpg)

Pic 2 (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v439/sys2021/karekanoR3box.jpg)

Packaging:

Box=sturdy. No surprise there. The spine features Arima and Yukino, with a fading background of a highschool hallway. The series name runs along the right side of the spine. What I assume is the Korean translation of the title is featured in 4 small pink circles to the left of the original characters.

On the right side of the box is an image of Yukino, with sunflowers in the background. The series name is pictured along the top. On the left side of the box is an image with basically everyone posed together. There are credits running along the bottom of the box in english, with a box that contains info on the special features.

This is a 6 disc release. The covers feature various characters from the series, and each one has a small section of text (in Korean). I don't know Korean so I'm not sure of what it says. The back of each cover is all in Korean, as well. Each disc comes with what I assume could be a postcard, as an insert. Each postcard features an image of some of the characters from the series, with the series logo (sans Korean text though).

Content:

Episode per disc wise you're looking at a 4:4:4:4:5:5 release.

languages: Japanese DD 2.0 only. No Korean dub.

subtitles: Korean only.

special features: all of the voice actor interviews are spread out across the discs. The features of each disc varies. Some include textless endings or picture galleries, and most include character information and production notes (in Korean of course). Some of the features listed on the back of certain covers aren't available on each respectable DVD for some reason, however.

digital omake/easter eggs: none that I know of.

video quality: While I have no "official" means of judging this, it looks pretty good. I'm viewing this on my computer with a LCD monitor.

sound quality: I haven't watched this whole set yet, but there aren't any glitches or anything that I've encountered. Seems pretty solid.

As with most R3 releases, the original OP/ED credits are in Japanese.

Comparison with The Right Stuf International's release (R1):

Comparison pic 1 (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v439/sys2021/karekanor1andr3.jpg)

Comparison pic 2 (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v439/sys2021/karekanor1andr3comp.jpg)

Packaging/Presentation:

The R3 wins hands down in my opinion. The original series logo/name, a more visually pleasing box, and each disc has an insert. The R1 release lacks inserts of any kind. The "school" theme of the R1 release is kind of corny, in my opinion.

Disc content:

The R1 wins here, I think. Each release has the same amount of features, except the R1 has some storyboards on the first disc. Also has an English dub, and Rightstuf went so far as to have the english VA's do the previews for each coming episodes, when you have the audio selected in English. Of course, all the extras and stuff have English subs too, which the R3 lacks. The R3 has Korean subs in its place. For English speakers, I think the R1 is a good choice.

Until I watch the whole thing through, or I can get some info on it, but I believe that the R3 version is the home video version. The R1 is the TV edited version to my knowledge. If someone can get me some info on what the home video version has that's extra, I can check my R3 DVDs.

Video/Audio comparison:

Video:Video quality seems to be pretty much equal at first glance for both the R1 and R3 version. I'm just basing this off of my own view. Here's a screen cap comparison:

Comparison 1

R1 version (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v439/sys2021/cap003.bmp)

R3 version (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v439/sys2021/cap002.bmp)

Comparison 2

R1 version (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v439/sys2021/cap015.bmp)

R3 version (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v439/sys2021/cap014.bmp)

Comparing the screen caps now, it looks like the R3 has slightly more vivid color. I did not alter any settings while taking the screen caps. The R1 looks much duller in comparison.

Audio: Both have the original Japanese 2.0 stereo without any glitches to my knowledge. The R1 has the english 2.0 audio though, while the R3 only has the Japanese audio.

Thus concludes my review of the Kare Kano R3 box set. I will add more info if I happen to finish up watching the DVDs (info on the extra footage for the home video version would be great). I'll post more reviews in the future. I hope to see other members' reviews as well!

(R2) Patlabor The Movie 2: Sound Renewal (now out-of-print and replaced by new editions)
-------
It's not until you see the remastered picture do you realize this flick has some of the most beautiful backgrounds in any anime ever. The region-1 DVD in comparison (and even by itself) is a real visual disaster. That alone makes this movie worth importing over Manga Entertainment's worthless region-1 release.

Composer Kenji Kawai (http://www.kenjikawai.com/) updated his music with newskool(er) synthesizers, but save for a few songs the end result sounds cheap and rushed and nothing greater than the sum of its samply-sounding parts. I'm no purveyor of oldskool / lo-fi sound, but this is one instance where modernization kills the lo-fi synergy of the original, rather than lifting it to new hights. Fortunately the original audio track was included on this DVD too. In the sound renewal, some scenes had music added in or changed, and that can be disorienting for someone too used to the original version. As demonstrated in Disney's release of Laputa: Castle in the Sky, sometimes the addition of new music can destroy and flatten the feeling of scenes.

The only extras here are some lame trailers. However, the disc comes with a nice booklet with interviews and stuff.

(R2) Tenshi no Tamago ("Angel's Egg") -- out of print!
----------
For such an old anime the remastered picture is amazing! Just about on par with Pioneer's remastered Akira DVD! And they remastered the audio track to stereo sound. While the stereo vocal processing might sound a bit weirdly spacialized, this is really as good as this film gets.

And hey, I just discovered this disc is out of print, making its value over $200 according to amazon.co.jp. w00t :P

(R2)End of Evangelion / Death and Rebirth True^2 (original)
---------
hahahahaha, it was so worth buying this back in 2000. While all the other Eva fans were killing themselves over Manga Entertainment's infinitely delayed R1 release, I was already enjoying EoE on DVD for years! :D
That alone was worth $80.

Its image quality is on par with Manga's R1 release... but with slightly better colors and progressive scan tho. But still no comparison to the new remastered editions.

(R2) Sugoiyo Masaru-san! Sexy Commando Gaiden (vol 2 and 3).
---------
yep. Fansubbers too slow... so I imported it. You can get translated subs for the whole series at scriptclub.org (http://www.scriptclub.org). The image quality is regular for broadcast anime. And for this series which I think makes a conscious effort to go for the old lo-fi film look, it doesn't really benefit from the DVD format. There are no extras. And yes, I did rip and release volume 3 on usenet semi-recently.

out of time. I'll blab about the rest of my R2s later.

I just got this in the mail today from Anime Jungle which includes
Scrapped Princess I Tabidachi no Sho: SutePRIX Edition with Pacifica figure
Scrapped Princess II Deai no Sho: SutePRIX Edition with large Pacifica figure
Scrapped Princess III Shijin no Sho: SutePRIX Edition with large Raquel figure
Scrapped Princess IV Suteinu no Sho: SutePRIX Edition with Shannon figure
Scrapped Princess V Itansha no Sho: SutePRIX Edition with Raquel and Suin figurines

Cards (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v106/ollin/P8160047_edited.jpg)

I'm not going to do a long review because it to took me most of the night taking everything out, fixing the figures, taking pics, ect. Plus I still have many R1 reviews to write at AB and won't even watch the DVD's until I get all of the discs.

Packaging Each of the DVD and figures are in a box. The box is just meant to hold the DVD and figure nothing more. There's an opening on one side of the box to display the cover art for the volume. The cover art's are kinda disappointing. Looks like screen caps to me. I'm hoping Bandai uses something different.

Extras: The figures are the main attraction for the LE sets. Volumes 1, 3, and 5 contains decent sized figurines but with vol. 2 and 3 the figurines are just huge. I'm not a big figurine collector but these are simply gorgeous. Definitly worth the price for the LE's.

Final thoughts if you have extra money try and pick these up at Anime Jungle before the sale ends because it's worth not missing at a discounted price. I'm hoping Anime Junlge puts up the rest of the volumes ASAP or I'll have to pick them up retail at Amazon Japan.

First of all, thanks for the contributions. Great pics, Ollin. I'm kind of tempted to tap that deal at Anime Jungle now, just because it's such a great deal.

I'm kinda bored so I figured I'd post up another review. Plus I've got to compare the R3 and R1 while I still have them, hehe, I've already sold a bunch of DVDs on eBay.

Ah! Megamisama! (Oh! My Goddess) R3 review

Pic of White box (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v439/sys2021/AMGwhitebox1.jpg)
Pic of Red box (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v439/sys2021/AMGredbox1.jpg)

Packaging:

The White box is a sturdy box, with a "book" like casing. It's quite similar to the R1 release of the Escaflowne Movie: Ultimate Edition, case-wise, but the spine folds down so it's easier to grab the DVDs. Plus the part that houses the DVDs has a tapered side so you can get them easier. The white version features Skuld on the cover. The box includes the 2 OVA DVDs, a memorial book, and a set of postcards.

There is a translucent slipcase (made out of a very thin paper) that keeps the postcards attached to the book. This set of postcards features various pictures of Skuld. The memorial book is a small collection of artwork, sort of like a mini-artbook.

The DVD cover design is great. The covers themselves are printed on a clear plastic, so the background for the cover is actually the back of the DVD insert! Pretty cool idea I think.

Content:

Episodes per disc: 3:2.

Languages: Korean, Japanese

Subtitles: Korean, Japanese, Korean dubtitles

Special Features: Info on staff and cast (in Korean), info on characters (in Korean), photo gallery (slide show basically), and the Japanese trailer for eX-Driver. Disc 2 features textless openings and endings.

Digital omake/Easter eggs: none that I've encountered yet.

Video quality: pretty good. There aren't really any flaws, looks like a good transfer.

Sound quality: I don't really have a good enough sound system to judge this by, unfortunately. So I guess it's pretty good.

Comparison with AnimEigo's release:

Packaging/Presentation:

The R3 boxes win hands down in this case. The DVD covers are much nicer, and the insert is a lot nicer too. The LE boxes have the mini artbook and postcard sets, too, which the R1 release doesn't have. The R1 release doesn't have a box, either.

Disc Content:

Basically the two releases are equal in this category. The R1 has audio comentary from some of the English VA's, but that's about it. The R3 has textless OP/ED sequences and the eX-driver trailer. Both have photo galleries/slide shows.

Video/Audio Comparison:

Video: The two releases are a world apart. The R3 easily wins this category. A much better transfer. Note: I did not change any settings while taking these pictures.

Comparison 1

R1 pic (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v439/sys2021/cap004.bmp)

R3 pic (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v439/sys2021/cap005.bmp)

Comparison 2

R1 pic (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v439/sys2021/cap007.bmp)
R3 pic (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v439/sys2021/cap006.bmp)

It almost seems like the R1 release just got the brightness turned up way too much. The transfer is way too gritty, too. There's a lot of grainy images, it seems.

Audio: Again I have no way to compare this since my sound system sucks. Both have the Japanese audio track, and an additional audio track (Korean and English) for the R3 and R1 release, respectively.

I will post thoughts on the AMG Blue box when I get it. Content wise they are the same, however vol. 1 for the Red and White boxes have a different cover, and different menu setup (focusing on Urd or Skuld depending on which box). The vol. 2 cover art is the same, though. The memorial booklet's binding is also a different color for each box. The postcards are different for each box.

This basically concludes my Ah! My Goddess R3 box review. I highly recommend any of these boxes for Ah! Megamisama fans. The video is much better than the R1.

edit: I was browsing Anime Jungle and I found something of interest:

トライガン Trigun vol. 1 (repeat ed) ¥5800 VIBF-241 (9/22 release)

Apparently all the volumes (1-7) are being re-released. I wonder if they'll be in the jewel cases that they were in before, or will they be in keepcases? Super jewel cases, maybe? I wonder if a box edition will be available? I'm holding off on my order for the R3 box to see what this one is all about. I checked Amazon Japan and they have vol. 1-7 already listed for the re-release. I wonder if there is an audio or video remaster? Or is it just a re-release? Interesting news.

(R2) Ghost in the Shell: Limited Edition (http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/detailview.html?KEY=BCBA-1849)

This is one of those things you buy to show off because the box is so damn slick. It's so slick, it's actually a pain to unravel the whole thing and retrieve the DVD... but that's okay because it makes up for that by looking sooo slick.

Content-wise It comes with a full storyboard book (illustrated by Mamoru Oshii), and another book called the "Laboratory Book" which features several design sketches. The disc has several GitS trailers and a small making-of called Digital Works, where you see many preliminaries and pre-renderings and un-composited versions of the 3D / computer effects.

COMPARISON TO REGION-1...
the image quality is better. I took screenshots from both the discs and A-B'ed them (this was a while ago so I don't have the screenshots anymore). The R2 has 2x the bitrate... this means a better-looking encode, less compression artifacts, and way less color bleeding. This really comes across in detailed images such as the marketplace scene. The R2 also has more dynamic range. The R1 in comparison has an overly "hyped" image.

If you remember, the R1's Japanese track was 2.0 and mysteriously lacked like 1/2 the sound effects!! What was that, a demo tape version? None of that bullsh-t on the R2 disc. The R2 also has the ol' Eng. dub.

The only major con about this disc is that the included English subtitles are actually dubtitles!! Pretty unfortunate, but if you've seen the "real" subtitles enough times in the past to remember what the real lines are, it shouldn't bother you. If not, you can always get a translation from scriptclub.org (http://www.scriptclub.org) as usual.

Worthy buy for the price. There were also rumors of added scenes on this DVD. Not true.

^_^ wow, this is better than I expected. Thanks, Sharp!

Well I just got a call from Yes Asia... apparently they have the R3 Berserk box in stock, but they don't have the limited puzzle or booklet. I might cancel that from my order and order it some other time.

Anyway I think it's about time for another review, eh?

Jubei Ninpucho (Ninja Scroll) R3 DVD box

Box opened (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v439/sys2021/R3ninjascroll3.jpg)

Widescreen disc case opened again (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v439/sys2021/R3ninjascroll.jpg)

Packaging:

Stunning. A marvelous package. The case housing the DVDs and whatnot is taller than your average case. It's a sturdy box, similar to a hardcover book. The material reminds me a lot of a high quality hardcover boook, in fact. The title "Jubei Ninpucho" is sort of embossed on the cover as well as the spine, in a metallic red. It looks real nice. There is a piece of paper reading "Collector's edition" that slips over part of the front cover. This paper also features a picture of Jubei. The back of the box is blank, with the exception of a bar code.

Once you open up the case, there's a bunch of stuff inside: an envelope containing several postcards (sealed with a unique sticker), a widescreen version of the movie, and the fullscreen version of the movie. Also included is a poster for the feature.

Content:

Disc 1 (widescreen version)-

Languages: Japanese 2.0, Japanese DTS-ES, Japanese DD-EX, English 2.0, English DTS-ES, English DD-EX, Spanish 2.0, French 2.0

Subtitles: Korean, English

Special Features: Director Interview, Characters, Art Designs, Theatrical Trailer, TV Spot

Digital Omake/Easter Eggs: None found so far.

Disc 2 (full screen version)-

Languages: Japanese 2.0, English 5.1

Subtitles: Korean, English

Special Features: scene selection

Video Quality: Looks to be the original. Pretty good, no glitches or anything.

Sound Quality: I have a crappy sound system but judging the available audio tracks, there's something for everyone, at least on the widescreen disc.

Comparison with Manga Entertainment's release (R1):

Packaging/Presentation: The R3 is clearly the victor here. I am comparing the original Manga release, not the 10th anniversary edition. Even so the R3 has a box, the R1 doesn't. The R3 has two discs, the R1 only has one. The R3 has postcards and a poster, the R1 has nothing. The facts speak for themselves.

Disc Content:

The R3 wins here since it has the Director Interview. The R1 has barely any features at all.

Video/Audio Comparison:

Video: At first glance the two releases are kind of similar. Let's compare pics, shall we?

Comparison 1-

R3 Version (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v439/sys2021/cap010.bmp)

R1 Version (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v439/sys2021/cap012.bmp)

Comparison 2-

R3 Version (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v439/sys2021/cap011.bmp)

R1 Version (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v439/sys2021/cap013.bmp)

The R3 indeed has a slightly better picture. The R1 has that "fuzzy" effect, where the images aren't so clear. The R3 dominates here.

Audio: No real way to compare the two releases other than by checking the available audio tracks, which the R3 has more of. The R3 has DTS and 5.1 DD, too, for English and Japanese audio. Two crappy computer speakers will not do these audio tracks justice.

Well that's my review of the R3 Ninja Scroll box. For about $20 it's well worth the money. Definitely pick this up over the R1, 10th Annversary edition or otherwise.

In R2 news I'd like to point out something for GONZO fans:

青の6号 BLUE FLEET BOX (http://www.amazon.co.jp/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00026CJ3S/qid%3D1092857441/249-1660274-8685110) BCBA-1928 8/27 release

This apparently is a new release of Blue Submarine No. 6 in a limited box, containing 3 DVDs, 3 CDs, and a 24 page booklet.

While I thought Blue Sub 6 was okay, I don't know if I'd want to drop the $180 or so on this box. I like GONZO, but still.... anyone else thinking of getting this?

The image is large for those still behind in times.

DVD Cover (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v106/ollin/P8180053_edited.jpg)

This is one box I knew I had to have after seeing some pics of them. The artwork just doesn't even compare with the R1 box which is still a good box. The artwork has a church theme to it that gives it a gorgeous look to it. One panel has a fine detailed image Alucard ready to take out his guns. The other panel has Integra sitting down on her chair. Inside the box its al orange with Seres and the guy from the end credits. The first volume's cover art has image used by Geneon on their box. Geneon changed the logo for US release removing the cross and motto. I guess they thought it would lead to a backlash in the church community.

I haven't even watched the DVD so I can't give any comments about the content of the disc. It's a R2 DVD so expect a high bit rate and full use of the DVD specs.

Ah yes, I was waiting on your Hellsing Rescript box review, Ollin, ever since I laid eyes on it in your collection. I really want to pick that up myself. I'd love to hear an udpate of the disc content as well.

Okay folks we new this was inevitable, right? Yes, it's time for the one, and only...

Cowboy Bebop R3 review

Yes, this is a complete review of the Cowboy Bebop TV box, movie, and compilation. I will be comparing it to the R1 release (except the compilation, which I don't own the R1 version of) as well. If you didn't know by now, I'm a huge Bebop freak, so expect a lengthy review. ;)

Pic of all 3 R3s (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v439/sys2021/cowboybebopR3s.jpg)

TV Box Set

TV box pic (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v439/sys2021/cowboybebopR3box.jpg)

Packaging:

Pretty standard packaging, a simple design. It's a really sturdy box, with a simple design, featuring all members of the Bebop crew. The series name is printed on each individual side. On the top of the case is an image of the Swordfish II. The box houses all 9 DVDs.

Cover art wise, they're the same covers as the first R2 release. The insert for each DVD however is entirely in Korean.

Content:

Languages:Japanese, Korean

Subtitles:Japanese, Korean, English

Special Features (all of them are on disc 9): Session #0 (opening, characters, interview of the staff, interview of the cast, the story digest of sessions not broadcast on television, "Tank!" full size music clip, ending, "Tank!" club remix music clip), Characters (in Korean), Mechanics (in Korean), and Staff (in Korean)

Digital Omake/Easter Eggs: n/a

Video: Great! Looks like a great transfer from the original. If there are any flaws, the original is assumed to have them.

Sound: I have no means to judge this as I've mentioned before -_-;

Comparison with Bandai's Region 1 Release:

Face off! (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v439/sys2021/cowboybebopr1andr3versus.jpg)

Packaging/Presentation:

Hard to say here. For the box, I personally prefer the Bandai's R1 "The Perfect Sessions" box over the R3 box. I feel that it suits the series more, and I just really like the design for it. Cover art wise, they use the same art, except the R3s have 3 more discs, therefore more cover art. The R3 has the Vicious cover, the blue Faye/Jet cover, and the Spike cover. Since the designs are the same it's kind of hard to compare the two, but the cover art is splendid.

Menu-wise the R3s are much more appealing. Each disc has the series logo on the side, a still image in the foreground, and a faded background with animation playing. It's really cool looking, I think. The R1s just have that boring "computer" like interface.

Video/Audio Comparison:

Video: No noticeable way to tell unless we compare pics. Round 1, fight!

Comparison 1:

R3 version (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v439/sys2021/cap016.bmp)

R1 version (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v439/sys2021/cap019.bmp)

A close call. In the first pic it looks like the R1 version is slightly brighter. I'm almost tempted to say that the R1 looks better, but I could be mistaken. For now I think I'll just say that it's too close to call.

Audio: No way to really compare with my current setup.

Overall, the R3 box is a good buy. Less than $10 a disc, and it's right on par with the R2 release. The box is so-so, though.

I think I'll do seperate posts for the Cowboy Bebop R3 movie and the Compilation box just so I can take a break :)

Knockin on Heaven's Door (The Movie) R3

Pic of The Movie and its contents (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v439/sys2021/cowboybebopR3movie.jpg)

Packaging:

The movie is housed in a flimsy box. The box is shiny/metallic looking, though. A simple cover design. The Korean title of the movie is in very small text next to "the movie" part of the title.

The cover art for the disc itself is exactly like the R2 release. A fantastic cover. There's no insert inside the case, but there is a replica film strip inside. Mine contains 5 stills from the film. I'd say that the cover would be reversible, but it doesn't have any text on the spine. The inside cover features a view of Elektra, Vincent, and Spike, while the opposite side has a scene selections list.

Also included is a memorial booklet, 198 pages in length. It basically contains the concept artwork for the movie, entirely in black and white.

Content:

Languages: Japanese, English

Subtitles: English, Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese, Thai, Korean

Special Features: Featurettes (English subs not removable, optional Korean subs), Storyboard Comparisons, Character Biographies (in English), Conceptual Art Galleries, Music Videos, and Trailers

Digital Omake/Easter Eggs: n/a

Video: Great. I think it's in anamorphic widescreen, but I could be wrong. When you're watching it on a computer it's hard to tell. One thing I noticed though, when you start up the movie, they have warnings in each language subtitles on the disc in addition to a Japanese warning! Yikes!

Audio: I have no suitable means of judging this with my setup.

Comparison with Columbia-TriStar's Region 1 Release:

Comparing the R1 and R3 release (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v439/sys2021/CBmovier1andr3versus.jpg).

Packaging/Presentation:

Well, they're both made by the same company, so you think that this would be equal, right? Wrong. The R3 is better in this case, for several reasons. First, it comes in a box... a flimsy box, but still, a box, which is a nice feature. Secondly, it has a 198 page illustration book included. It also features the R2 artwork for the DVD cover. Well done, indeed.

Video/Audio Comparison:

R1 Version (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v439/sys2021/cap025.bmp)

Too close to tell, I'd say.

Audio: n/a

Comparing the releases overall, I'd say go for the R3. Better extras, cheap price, and you get the english dub and english subs too. Can't beat that.

The Compilation Box Set R3

Packaging:

Contains 2 cases in a flimsy box. The box design itself is great though, containing various images from the series in red/blue/black. It works out great. The first disc cover is in red/black, while the second disc cover is in blue/black. Both are great covers.

Each DVD case holds 2 discs, a 5.1 version and a DTS version.

Content:

Languages: Korean, Japanese (5.1 and DTS)

Subtitles: Korean, Japanese, English

Special Features: None. Chapter selection, that's about it.

Digital Omake/Easter Eggs: n/a

Video: Same as DVD Ani's release of the TV series, I'd say. No touch-ups I don't think.

Audio: I have no suitable means of judging this with my setup.

Since I don't own Bandai's release of this, I can't compare. Sorry! A great release though, but I'd say unless you're a big Bebop fan, I'd hold off on it, since the sound remaster is pointless due to the entire series being re-released with remastered sound on R2 DVD.

According to Amazon Japan's website, they've listed a box set for the Kidou Shin Seiki Gundam X TV series.

The Kidou Shin Seiki Gundam X Memorial Box (http://www.amazon.co.jp/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0002X7JCW/qid%3D1093050307/250-2115926-6694641) will retail with an MSRP for 63,000 Yen, and be released January 28, 2005. It includes no English subtitles and is Region 2 NTSC. They haven't listed the number of discs or further details for this release, but I imagine they will the closer we get to the release. It's quite tempting, this series I really enjoyed a long time ago, and I don't see Bandai releasing this on Region 1 anytime soon.

Just out of curiosity, for those collecting Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien... what's the deal with the "Mayauru no Okurimono" set and the "Hontou no Takaramono" set? The Mayauru no Okurimono set I guess is a LE of vol. 1, basically... but then what did the first pressing of the regular Kiminozo vol. 1 come with? I'm just wondering so I know which one to look for.

Got a package today from DVD heaven, containing the following R3s:

-.hack//SIGN box
-Mahoromatic box
-Ah! My Goddess blue LE box
-Boogiepop Phantom LE box

First impressions... the .hack//SIGN box is freakin great. A character postcard comes in each volume, along with an extensive fold-out insert, but it's in Korean. The box art is wonderful.

The Mahoromatic box is only for the first season. Looks like I'll be collecting the R2s for the rest.

The Ah! My Goddess blue box is great. I now own all 3 LE boxes... I'll update my earlier review of the White box to compare all 3. I need to re-buy the red box though since I sold my damaged box copy to someone on AoD.

The Boogiepop Phantom box is okay, it contains all 5 DVDs, but the box is flimsy... I'm talking ADV's box for Najica Blitz Tactics/Pretear flimsy. Disappointing, but at least it's something. I may cut a thin piece of metal or something to glue to the inside of the box, there's enough room to do so. Now I have to decide whether or not I'm going to double dip or toss my R1 copy...

Otherwise I've just been scoping out some R2s. I hate looking at Anime Jungle though because I see all these things that I want. :P I forgot about that Angelic Layer R2 gift box, which is like ¥42,800... man, it's tempting as hell, but I'm not sure if I would want it that badly or not. I already bought that Tenchi anniversary box, and I'm buying the upcoming Cowboy Bebop box, so I will most likely pass...

I'm debating whether or not to go bare-bones R2s and R3s, though... as in, purge my collection of most of my R1s. Right now I'm thinking that Mahoromatic and Angelic Layer (if I get the R2 box) are going. I'm probably tossing Last Exile and Strawberry Eggs... debating about Azumanga Daioh, Ai Yori Aoshi, GTO (I'll wait for a R2 re-release possibly, it's too popular not to re-release...), Infinite Ryvius, Eva Platinum, RahXephon, Someday's Dreamers, Texhnolyze, and Trigun. It would be a serious change in my collection... but I'd basically re-buy those series on either the R2 or R3 format. While Texhnolyze and Someday's Dreamers basically have the R2 boxes and the covers, I will probably buy the R2 volumes with the boxes, then hold off for a while on them. I don't care about the character cards for Texhnolyze, and I'm unsure of any first pressings that came with the R2 Someday's Dreamers.

I'm going to make my decision tommorow after I get back from work, because the CD Japan 10-50% off sale ends tommorow.

I'll post pics soon of the R3s I got today as well. Sorry for the long-winded post... -_-;

The "Mayauru no Okurimono" and "Hontou no Takaramono" sets are books. The DVDs themselves don't have any first press items, as far as I know.

The Mayauru no Okurimono is the book that Takayuki gave Haruka in the 2nd or 3rd ep, which was about the little goblin dude. The Hontou no Takaramono is the book Haruka ends up writing at the end of the series.

It's a set meaning a dvd and a book. Since you can order just the DVD or the DVD and book set, I don't qualify it as a first pressing. The first pressing of volume 2 came with a box pictured here (http://www.pages.drexel.edu/~dc86/kiminozo.html)

GTO (I'll wait for a R2 re-release possibly, it's too popular not to re-release...)

Sony Japan has already re-released GTO once already so you might be out of luck hoping for another one. The original 11 volume release (http://www.sonymusic.co.jp/Animation/database/gto_dvd_main.html) came out in the full of 2000 while the re-release DVD Collection (http://www.sonymusic.co.jp/Animation/lucky/gto/gto.htm) come out two years later. The original release was 5,500 yen per disc (60,500 yen total) and the re-release DVD Collection was 22,000 yen. The re-release was part of Sony’s Lucky Price 2000 (http://www.sonymusic.co.jp/Animation/lucky/index3.htm) marketing drive.

I picked up the Lucky Price 2000 box set re-releases of Wild ARMS: Twilight Venom, Arslan Senki and the Gakkou no Kwaidan. The boxes range from excellent (Wild ARMS) to rather flimsy (Arslan Senki). Not sure if the GTO got a nice box or a flimsy one but at that price you really can’t complain. ^^

The only series that I know Sony has re-released more than once is Wild ARMS but I believe that the second time was released to profit from one of the Wild ARMS video game releases.

The Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien Mayauru no Okurimono and Hontou no Takaramono sets are not worth getting excited over. I guess maybe just for collector's sake. I still have the book that came with volume 1 under my bed. I didn't even pre-order the one that's coming out with the last volume. The box on the other hand is a must buy. I might pull a fabio (http://128.255.60.56/aod/kgneboxes.jpg) and buy two more in the upcoming months.

I got my AJ order fast... I used EMS. I highly recommend them now actually and will be ordering a bunch from them in the future.

edit: just to post some quick first impressions...

R3 acquisitions:

1. .hack//SIGN box- A very nice sturdy box containing all 9 DVDs. The DVDs are in these wonderful clear green keepcases, and the hub is great (exactly the same type of hub I got with my FLCL vol. 2 DVD). Each DVD comes with a character postcard and an extensive foldout in Korean. No English subs though.
2. Boogiepop Phantom box- Flimsy box. As in, ADV Najica/Pretear flimsy. I couldn't believe it. Contains all 5 volumes though. I'll have to cross-check the R1/R3 quality to determine what I want to do with my R1 set. No English subs.
3. Mahoromatic box set- Sturdy box cotnaining all 6 volumes. Contains season 1 only. Vol. 1-3 contain postcards, while vol. 4-6 don't. No English subs.
4. Ah! My Goddess blue LE box-Same as the other 2 boxes, but this is the Belldandy version. Vol. 1's cover is the same as one of the AnimEigo R1 covers, but it's got that cool clear cover thing going on, so it looks better. No box damage, thankfully! No English subs here either.

R2 acquisitions:

1. Last Exile vol. 9-11 first press- What I expected. Vol. 9 and 10 come with paper vanships. Vol. 11 doesn't have any first press extras. Awesome cover art, by the way.
2. Chrno Crusade vol. 1 LE first press- Awesome, simply awesome. One hard box stuck inside the other. The gun replica is breathtaking.
3. Hellsing Rescript II first press- I thought that the first pressing would contain some sort of charm, as I've seen on Yahoo Auctions JP, but mine came with this weird Anderson/Alucard sticker. I haven't watched the DVD yet though, but it looks pretty good.
4. Tsukihime vol. 1 first press w/ box- No escape from the black Geneon logo! Great box... was missing the box spacer and obi, but I knew that beforehand. Very pleased.
5. This Ugly and Beautiful World vol. 1 first press- Wow. Gorgeous box... it's like... shiny... -_-; Very cool though. The first press comes with this weird bag... I think it's some sort of tote bag.

edit: For TK (Chrno Crusade details)

Apparently all the LEs must be like this. No box for the whole series, but with the gun replicas, I can see why. Anyway, enjoy!

Your right about that fact there is no box for the series and that the majority of the LEs will have the gun replica. I think at around volume 6 or 7 i think it is you dont get the gun anymore but they start throwing in soundtracks and stuff like that. But still worth the buy i think.

If you want the first pressings you're going to have to look elsewhere. I believe that Chrno Crusade was released in the single DVD format and the DVD + LE format. However I think there are still some first pressings that came with each volume. I think I missed out on the vol. 1 first pressing as I my DVD didn't come with anything special, besides the gun.

This will be added to my definite pre-order list.

I took pics of the FLCL R2's some time ago but really haven't had the time to write a review for it.
Thanks for the info Ollin. When a product code comes out be sure to post it so some of us can preorder. I think I'll be preordering it as well, at least volume 1. However at 3 volumes it's kind of hard not to pass up the first pressings of each one, since it's so short.... -_-;

I'm approaching my Paypal receiving limit, though, so I may need to make an order somewhere so I can avoid paying for a Paypal account, haha...

Sony Japan has already re-released GTO once already so you might be out of luck hoping for another one. The original 11 volume release came out in the full of 2000 while the re-release DVD Collection come out two years later. The original release was 5,500 yen per disc (60,500 yen total) and the re-release DVD Collection was 22,000 yen. The re-release was part of Sony’s Lucky Price 2000 marketing drive.

Well I guess I'll wait for a re-master or something... that's feasible, right? I mean, even Gunbuster got remastered, and Cowboy Bebop's getting a sound remaster at least, so why not GTO? As I recall it was extremely popular in Japan.

edit: Thread's starting to get a bit too cluttered :P need to post another review soon or something. My next review? Probably the .hack//SIGN R3 box.

Im not really to fussed on whether i get 1st presses or not the gun is good enough for me!! ^_^
The extra that comes with the 1st press edition of the volumes is a special premium book of some kind. Not sure what it has in it but aslong as i get an LE copy im happy.

Thanks alot for the heads up on the LE volumes still being instock Banchan, the first 2 volumes are now on the way to me :)
Now i need to play catch up with the volumes before they do become hard to find.

Nope, nothing special besides the gun. Well, if you ordered from CDJapan they through in a couple of booklets with DVDs 1 and 3, but that's it.

Um.... let's just say I was basically like "What the.... are you serious!?!?!" when they sent me the e-mail with the cost of shipping. With what they charged me for shipping & handling, I could have bought another box set from them, pretty much. However I consider the deals I'm getting and I let it slide, I just factor the total shipping cost into small portions tacked onto each item, and it's not so bad.

The I, My, Me! Box is pretty nice, has a picture of the teacher on one side, and some of the girls on the other, and the dog is on the spine. The covers are Risky Safety style, in the fact that they are oriented horizontally instead of vertically.

Anyway I may post more detailed pics sometime soon, but I'm pretty busy this week since I am moving back to college on Wednesday or Thursday.

On a side note, I took a peek inside vol. 4 of Love Hina, and wow... it's packed with Engrish! I'm too lazy to take a pic right now, but here's what the girls are saying on the inside cover:

Mutsumi-
"I am OTOHIME Mutsumi
It seems to be pleasant,
and they are doing.
Of course, I am happy, too."

Sarah-
"AHHH...
I act violently
today, too.
I bully Keitaro
Where did he go?"

Shinobu-
"Where did he go?
Though it is delicious."

Naru-
"I came to a
picnic with all.

I think that you had better
take a rest once in a while.
All examinees should watch
The LOVEHINA for the rest.
What? What do you want to eat,
TAMA-chan?"

Okay, some of it isn't bad, but it's still funny....

Anyway I'm quite impressed with my order this time around. I'd like to continue to collect the first pressings of the series I started. The first pressing of Kiddy Grade came with this thick book that has storyboards and whatnot inside. Ikkitousen has this extra disc... Texhnolyze had the cards (I forgot that vol. 2 was the box version, not volume 1).

Very nice pictures sys2021. I see you got the Konomini box with volume 1, nice choice. And the Gad Guard box with volume 1, very nice choice. Anime Jungle has pretty good deals, but I usually don't buy from them that often because of the killer shipping. I do have my eye on a Galaxy Express 999 box from them though. I finally got my R3 Initail D first stage boxset, it has English subtitles which is nice. I'll post some pictures soon when I get back my digital camera.

Just a heads-up that SAMURAI CHAMPLOO 3 [VIBF-223] is now listed over at Animate (http://www.animate.co.jp/newrelease/av01.html), and there is still no word of a box. . .

Give it another few volumes, I guess.

My monthly R2 haul from Amazon Japan.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v106/ollin/P8300001_edited.jpg
SAMURAI CHAMPLOO VOL.1 : as mentioned in another thread Victor Entertainment is releasing the series in Super Jewel boxes same cases as Last Exile and Fullmetal Alchemist R2's. This being a 13 volume release the saved space with each DVD is very nice. Unfortunatly there's no physical extras that come within the DVD. I love the cover art for the series. The insert is made out of glossy type paper. Inside it includes info on two of the CD's, characters, and an interview with a staff member. I'll try to watch the DVD tomorrow.

Some pics
Front case (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v106/ollin/P8300002_edited.jpg)

Inserts 1 (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v106/ollin/P8300004_edited.jpg) and 2 (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v106/ollin/P8300005_edited.jpg)

Bakuretsu Tenshi Collector's Box Set I: Comes with the first three volumes of the series, drama CD, BOX, and figure. This is probably my 2nd most expensive single DVD purchase ever after the Escaflowner R1 box set but this is only 6 episodes. This is what R2 collecting is all about for me so I can't really pass up on the release. I'm not going to post pics because it's been posted before. Silverstar's website is down at the moment and he has plenty pics of the first set.

Kimi ga Nozomu Eien Vol. 7: this is why I should actually remember what comes with each volume. The regular edition doesn't come with reversible covers. :crybaby: I'm using all the reversible's for the previous volumes so this messes everything up.

Ikkitousen Vol. 6 and 7: It's great to finish up a series on R2's. :)

Midori no Hibi Memory 2: The series is being released in digipak's. The four episodes is on 1 DVD and their's also a short CD included. It's a quick release so I'll be finishing up the series next month. I might post pics tomorrow. Sorry took a pic of the wrong side of the box.

Tenjo Tenge Vol. 2: I have to say this is a decent series getting a great R2 release. There's a lot of extras with the Special DVD's and most likely getting multiple boxes for the release. This volume's cover art is again looking great. There's a trading card for the first press extra.

I think I covered everything. -_-; It's great getting a big order in every month one downside it takes forever to updating on DVDProfiler and take and upload pictures. Next month is going to be another heavy month with the second Baku-Ten box being released. I'll be checking the content for each DVD in the next week or month.

EDIT:
Took a look at the actual content for Samurai Champloo. For you AV buffs the video is done in letterbox widescreen not the preferred anamorphic widescreen. I watched the first two episodes a while ago on fansubs the DVD just blows it away. I wouldn't watch it any other way. The fight scenes between Mugen and Jin in the first episode is stunning still leaves me in awe. The audio is PCM stereo. A lot of studio's prefer this because its uncompressed audio it sounded great with the audio system and subs. The bitrate was a bit low in the mid 7's dipping in the 6's and climbing to the 8's. The audio and video took a lot of space so this is expected. This is only the first volume out of 13 so there's still a lot of volumes to come out so I look foward to each release.

I haven't seen any pics of the FLCL DVD's anywhere so here's some pics of them. I bought them from Anime Jungle earlier this year. All of them are first presses. I'm not even sure what the first presses were. -_-; I would like to believe the packaging are but who knows.
Front covers (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v106/ollin/P8210001_edited.jpg)
Case containing jewel case and booklet (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v106/ollin/P8210002_edited1.jpg)
jewel cases (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v106/ollin/P8210003_edited.jpg)
booklets (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v106/ollin/P8210004_edited.jpg)

AV: I own the R1 and R2 releases for FLCL and I've watched both plenty times. Audio wise the R2's are some what superior. I found it to be more evenly spread out with the speakers. Video wise on my TV there's really no large noticable difference between the two.

Packaging: I was suprised when I got these first cause I never even heard they came with this type of packaging. It's a fold type box larger then a keepcase inside holds the jewel case with the DVD and booklet. All the covers were used in the R1 release. Unfortunetly Synch-Point hands down beats this release with their large booklet and box.

FLCL is my top 3 anime of all time and there was no second guessing in spending the extra money for the R2's. The English subtitles for Vol. 2-6 is an added bonus.

Yes Amazon Japan uses DHL for their express shipping and they require signatures for all packages. For me it takes at most 3 days for it to ship to where I live.

I just discovered that my DVD player has a region-free hack involving only some button-pressing, so I'm excited about being able to acquire and watch some imports. I just have a few questions.

How are the import subtitles? Are they just as good as Region 1 released subtitles or riddled with Engrish?

Where can I find a good list of import DVDs with English subtitles? I know the inventory of import DVD sites must be huge, and rather than picking through all the anime titles to find the ones that have English subtitles, I'd just like to know if there's a list of anime import DVDs with English subtitles. Since I only speak English, this is my only option.

Thanks!

I think the story behind most people here is that they moved to buying R2s for superior sound and picture quality also much better packaging and general DVD releases.
Im not sure whether many people can understand Japanese fully (to my knowledge at least) but with watching R1 subbed DVDs for so long they've picked up alot of phrases and general japanese panguage from watching anime subtitled.

Well thats what ive been lead to believe from other people i'll probably come and get corrected sometime soon ^_^

I don't fully understand but I know a few words. Mostly I only collect the R2's of shows I know I'll probably never see on R1 release, like Galaxy Express 999 and Captain Herlock. I also like the quality of R2's. I am really getting into GE999 now though I don't care if I don't understand everything I'm just determined to finally be able to watch the show.

Some of the items aren't even box sets or no longer have the first presses boxes so be sure to check out the descriptions first. The only thing that intrests me is the Popotan other than that I probably will skip it because of low funds and trying to stick with pre-ordering the newer shows.

So this isn't a box set containing all the DVDs then, right? Judging by the price tag it looks pretty affordable, I may pick it up since I like the Asian Kung-Fu Generation though.

I doubt that if a collection is released containing all the DVDs that it would include any of the first pressings, like the extra disc, fullmetal files, fullmetal box though... I am interested in seeing the box, despite this. I just don't think I'd be double dipping unless the price was right.

edit: TK, it looks like the CD thing costs ¥3,500 which is roughly ~$35.

Oh yes I forgot to mention I got my Kidou Tenshi Angelic Layer Angel Gift Box yesterday. Not as impressive as I thought it would be, but oh well. The box is still nice. I was kind of surprised though, no inserts.

Anyway I know that 1. I haven't posted a review in a while and 2. I haven't posted pics in a while, so I will be sure to do both soon. I plan on buying some new shelves soon to accomodate my collection, so once I get those I will be able to post some pics.

Considering it's 13 volumes and individually retails for around $650 the price of the Premium Box won't be a huge difference. The Cowboy Bebop 5.1 comes out in December plus the last BOX of Baku-Ten in Jan. it's definitly not looking like a good month for saving up.

After visting the AOD forums I'm fairly certain this is incorrect. If they were going to do something as big as a box set, then why would the only mention of it be in the middle of a page about a CD set? It looks like a box set of the CDs, and someone on AOD says that it says it will only be printed until January 31st 2005, hence the date. Plus it doesn't say anywhere that the Premium box has the DVDs. I'm assuming it's referring to the CD boxset.

Posts deleted; sorry for the mixup (and for getting some people's hopes up).

On a different note, I should soon be finding out if Mangaoh Club is going to ship me CLAMP no Kiseki 01 & BOX. It seems that Amazon Japan also removed volume 02 from my one order, so I do not believe getting the volumes (01, 02, BOX, or otherwise) from there is going to be an option. v_V

With Samurai 7 being licenced by Funi I decided to skip the R1 release and pick up the first volume of the R2's. The LE extras look fantastic. If I like it enough I'll get the rest of the volumes. I'm just not looking foward to paying over $700 for the series. This should be arriving by the end of this week or early next week with the rest of my R2 order for September.

EDIT: Also removed Innocence from this month's order and put it in my October order. For some reason it is out of stock and restocking in 10-13 days which means it would have delayed my order from shipping which isn't good.

Since this is the r2 section. I have a question. Lets say a series is released on 13 discs and each has a first press item. Lets say you were not able to get all thirteen items. Would it make you angry?

Studio 4C is now taking votes on what you'd like to see on the Japanese DVD of Mind Game, and English Subtitles is one of the options! Word has it that Mind Game may be edited for international release, so this is important :)

That's a quick announcement even with the anime series not even airing. I usually like the anime Genco produces. I'm looking foward to the new anime line up for this fall. It's just going to be hard to choose what series I'll start collecting on R2's. There's no question I'll be collecting My Hime and Uta Kata after that I have to be very selective. AIR TV and Ah My Goddess TV starts airing next year so I don't want to miss out on both.

(Once again, a few other [larger] pictures are on my site.)

Quite a large JUNGLE restock today. . . I have a feeling quite a few of those DVDs are reserved for sys2021. -_-; More Kenran Budousai: The Mars Daybreak volumes really tempt me to pick up the volumes already out and start keeping up with the series. . . [edit: nevermind... someone already has the first three Gundam SEED volumes reserved (that was the deciding factor. . . I don't want to make a Jungle order with only two DVDs on it. . . you need to go all out when ordering from them to try to minimize shipping costs. . .haha]

And JUNGLE finally stocks first press volume 1 of Paranoia Agent, and it's reserved! Curses!

*wonders when JUNGLE is ever going to get the volumes of .hack//Legend of the Twilight in that he has on his watchlist*

Just for the fun of it, these are the following items I think are reserved for sys2021:
FLCL (Furi Kuri) vol. 1 (1st ed)
Fullmetal Alchemist vol. 1 (1st ed)
Last Exile vol. 2
Last Exile vol. 3 (1st ed)
Last Exile vol. 4 (1st ed)
Last Exile vol. 5 (1st ed)
Last Exile vol. 6 (1st ed)
Last Exile vol. 7 (1st ed)

Let me know how close I was. =P

 You're absolutely correct, Tabris, but add on Paranoia Agent vol. 1, and the RahXephon movie LE. :)

I'm afraid that I will be biting on this order, I think. Costs over half a grand, but I will be closer to finishing Last Exile. Plus with the first press of FMA vol. 1 I won't have to be worrying that much about that series. After this though... no more orders I don't think until I can sell my R1s. Right now I think I can only afford to collect 1 series on R2 for the time being due to my ridiculous spending.

edit: there are a few series that I'll basically be prioritizing now... FLCL, FMA, possibly Samurai Champloo, and Eva Renewal. Once I complete FLCL and FMA I think I'm going to save for the Renewal box. Problem is, I've got no money after this order. I said a while ago that I'd be placing one more "big" order with AJ, and this one is it, I think. I will be prioritizing FMA especially since I want the first pressings. Once I sell more of my R1s I'm going to take a break until winter, I think. Gotta stop coming here so I will be left in the dark about upcoming LEs and whatnot, haha. I also have the Cowboy Bebop box coming to me in early January, so I need to put money aside for that.

Is it just a once every month thing? Or whenever they can get there hands on the merchandise?

They restock every day, but it's not guaranteed that they will have restocked anime DVDs for each day, though. For reserved titles you may find that you don't have to wait that long, but sometimes the wait is longer. I'm not sure how exactly it works, but they seem to restock titles which aren't necessarily on anyone's watchlist.

Ah, so you're the one who snatched away Paranoia Agent 1. =P

That is the first time JUNGLE has stocked any of the Paranoia Agent DVDs (yes, believe me, I've been watching), so I was kind of afraid that they like, couldn't get them in or something. Now that I see that they can get them in, I may be adding a SET of all six volumes first press to my watchlist. . . Seems like there aren't any first presses with the other volumes, though, with volume 2 being stocked and not being listed as 1st ed or anything. . .

Just a quick question, when exactly does Anime Jungle restock?

They restock everyday, except Wednesdays. To note, I do not like Wednesdays. haha

I may be making a rather small order with them soon. . . This morning I am using the free time I have to rehash my orders, prioritize my purchases, and start getting things set up for the rest of the year. . .

Just wanted to point out that Anime Jungle has that yearly sale at the end of the year. Last year it was 20% off all used R2's. I picked up a bunch of R2 boxes and plan on making another big order again. There prices are okay but when you count shipping and handeling plus the 10% fee for oversea customers it's almost higher than then Amazon's Japan's total price including the usual 20% preorder discount. I said it before I'm sticking with the pre-orders for now and the one's I missed or isn't high on my list I'll just get the R1's.

I have to really cut back on the R1 pre-ordering from now on. I could be reaching the $1000 monthly mark if I'm spending the way I am as of now. With the addition of Samurai 7 LE's that's another $700 in the next year. Don't worry selling my DVD's isn't even an option. -_-;

I'll post my thoughts on the R2 order I got yesterday when I get to it.

Its sounds as though you should add them to your watchlist if there that hard to get hold of, you could have a real job on your hands trying to find them otherwise.
The only things ive got on my watchlist are all of the Hellsing 1st Presses, it was the 1st series i ever saw and had on R1, its only fair to renew it on R2 ^_^

It's in early December. It was right after the big DDD coupons so I didn't have much money left over for the sale. They also had some sort of discounted shipping earlier this year that I didn't take advantage of. The Popotan Vol. 1-6 set is still instock. I would like to get it but I'll hold out for some other series.

But i bet he was secretly loving your big watchlist, all it meant was more money for him and AJ :P

Nice order, Banchan.

Eternal Savior- you may want to try the Music forum or the Naruto forum for more info. Here is not the place for that. Or create a new thread in the DVD forum if you wish, but I'm sure it will be moved. As for the drama CDs, I don't know. I'm sure that you'd have to know Japanese anyway... I haven't heard them though, I've only heard the first and second OST.

Sorry to hear about your order mishap, TK, as well. Hope everything works out.

I'd like to take the time to post some somewhat "sad" news... I'm cutting back on DVDs, permanently. Recently I took a look at my stuff and realized that I'm not quite satisfied... I think I'm going to get rid of my R1s, first of all, with a few exceptions. Secondly, I won't be collecting that much R2 anymore. I plan on getting the Gunbuster remastered set, but that's it. I need more money! It hasn't gotten to the point where I don't have food money, haha, I'm not that crazy, but I definitely want to pick up some new clothes, and guess what? I'd rather have a nice shirt and pair of pants than a DVD.

If possible I may sell a few select R2 DVDs, but if I'm stuck with them, oh well. I've come to the realization that I'm starting to collect series that I haven't seen yet or series that are only so-so on R2 DVD. Namely Love Hina, Ai Yori Aoshi, Gatekeepers, Tsukihime, Kono Mini, Mahoromatic season 2, among others. There are series that I'm a big fan of that I'd like to keep collecting (Fullmetal Alchemist for instance) on R2, but that's about it. I haven't had much interest in watching anime anymore these days, or some reason. Definitely not enough to merit buying all the R2s I have.

I tend to only buy special editions, or unlicensed / rare / never-fansubbed stuff. R2s are expensive... I need a good reason to buy them :)

while I'm at it, the latest R2 I bought was Innocence "Staff Box" DVD. Comes with a making-of, untranslated commentary track :(, a larger-than-usual full original storyboard book, script / treatment books, a pretty neat case (you unfold the face of the gynoid to open it)

Patlabor The Movie 1 special edition re-release thingy coming in, along with Gosenzosama Banbanzai, a never-translated Mamoru Oshii OAV from 1989. Expect a raw to appear on usenet / bittorrent when I get around to it... hopefully some fansubber will get interested in it.

Strange thing is i didnt get a tracker number e-mailed to me when it shipped out with DHL which i thought was quite odd.

First try out R2's that have English subs to see if it's for you. FLCL, Millennium Actress, Akira, Ghost in the Shell, and Saikano are some examples. Or you can try to pick up anime that are your favorites that you might already own on R1's. Here's a full list. http://www.animeondvd.com/discdata/subdublist.php

On Animejungle's recent changes page. They list Scrapped Princess Vol. 9-12 priced down to 4800 Yen but I can't seem to find the page where I can add it to my cart at that price. With this price I'll finish up the series sooner than I expected. I don't know what happened to vol. 6-8 and those were the one's came with the big figures with the girls in swimsuits.

I've been meaning to post about this:

While recenting viewing Fullmetal Alchemist 9 I would randomly check the bitrate in some scenes. In past volumes Fullmetal Alchemist has been sporting a bitrate average I would say is around 8.7+mbps, and a low at around 7.3mbps. However, many times I saw the bitrate drop as low as 5.7mbps on volume 9. I was very disappointed. I guess the animation quality has dropped significantly with these episodes, and it shows. I just hope they can bring it back up in the remaining volumes.

I thought it was kind of odd that they would have to cut on animation quality to begin with, given how popular this series has been.

That may be the reason. They may think enough people will buy it regardless of the quality (to some extent).

I'm using a region free DVD player. It started me down the path of R2's....

Here's some cover arts that I'm really digging right now.

APPLESEED Collector's Edition (http://www.a-seed.jp/gadgets/dvd_cd/img/image11.gif)

I'll definitly now reconsider getting the CE's instead of the standard for APPLESEED.

I only have a few R2s I got in recently from Amazon Japan and Anime Jungle. I would have more but it seems my latest shipment from Amazon was either lost by the Japanese or US post. I can only hope they will send me everything again. On the up side, I only need volume 1 of Green Green to complete the TV series and I finshed up Midori no Hibi.

I own a few Region2 DVD's, one I had bought from anime nation and that was Street fighter II movie uncut. I also own the Innocence DVD, Tenjou Tenge vols 1 and 2, Piano, Bishoujo Sailormoon live vol 1-3. Arcade Gamer fubuki, The Revivial of Evangelion vol 1, and Evangelion Death(true)2 <- you won't see this in the platitium version no sir, it's both Death & Rebirth and EoE combined. One thing i notice about region 2 dvd's, is that the quality is usually much better. Probably becuz the episode count is lower they can jackup the video bitrates, or maybe they working with the original transfers or something i dunno. Some region 2 dvd's such as saikano or spirited away contain subtitles, some such as Wings of Honneamise even contain a english dub. speakin of WoH, i heard from a lot of people that the quality in the region 2 version is waaaay better then the one manga put out. I know for sure Street Fighter II region 2 was better then the region1 version, the region2 version of Arcade Gamer Fubuki looks better then the region 1 ver too, probably cuz right stuf cramed all 4 eps plus the extra episode and trailers and music videos on one disc where the region 2 version released the OVA 1 episode per disc

Anyways, I usually collect region 2 becuz of the quality, maybe i'll post up some screen shots of innocence later but im kinda lazy

Just received Macross Zero Vol. 1 R2's in the mail today. Bought it from eBay for $14 so the price was pretty good. I'll try to find the other volumes for cheap. So far only Vol. 2 is available at Anime Jungle so I might have to pick up the rest at Amazon Japan.

I'm not completely sure if I'll be able to get the rest of the two boxes by their release dates, but if not, there's always the individual volumes. I would be lying if I said John's positive comments about it didn't push me a little on the "BUY!" side of the fence, but I liked what I saw. The bonus disc was a good plus, too. I hope I can get it before Christmas.

DVD Ani the studio that is releasing the set has a bad reputation of not licensing everything they release. As with the case with Trigun box set they released by them last year. Is it or isn't it a bootleg that's for you decide.

It's by DVD Ani, who, as Ollin said, are questionable by some people... the legality of DVD Ani's releases is just up in the air. Whether or not you choose to believe that they are bootlegs or not is your own decision. I buy many DVD ani releases.

This box set looks like a repackaging of the old box set, just with new box art. The subs are pretty good, I posted a review of it in this thread, earlier...

If you care about the dub, just get the R1 DVDs. A box isn't a big deal, and certainly shouldn't ever divert you from getting a series.

Your current R1 player may be able to play R2 dvds using a remote hack. (Combo of button presses on your remote) Not all players have this feature but yours may do a google search for remote hack and your model player. Currently I have a Lite On LVD 2001 player with all the bells and whistles and it has a remote hack to allow me to watch R2 dvds.

That is an awesome haul man. I'm actually reading the Tenjou Tenge manga right now, do those DVDs have english subs by any chance? Is the series good? Do you know by any chance how much of the manga the anime covers? Thanks

And that R2 Spiderman looks awesome, so much much better than the R1, I hate the R1 coverart.

But very nice pick up !

I own the R3 version of the Esca box, and it's exactly the same... it's quite nice. The tarot cards are kind of cool. The cover art is beautiful, but I think Van looks too weird on the cover where he has his wings spread, embracing Hitomi.... The R3 version has keepcases w/ different covers, though. I prefer keepcases, so I think I'm going to keep my R3 in lieu of the R2.

I am officially envious. May I ask where you picked it up, and (if you wish to disclose) how much you paid?

Here's a small picture contribution of some old items, but quality R2 discs nonetheless:

I would like some suggestions/comments/opinions about the layout of the pages. I'm beginning to piece my alphabetical indices together, and am looking to decide on a page layout. Any feedback would be appreciated.

eBay for $88 shipped. Would of gotten it for way cheaper if it weren't for another person bidding last minute. I did mention last month getting Macross Zero Vol. 1 for $14 last month. :) But getting the rest of the OVA on the cheap side might be more difficult.

$88 for the R2 Escaflowne BOX is more than a bargain, thats less than what you pay for the R1 version on some online stores!!
The poor seller of that box, he must of bought it for like 2-3 times the price you paid for it.
Ive never thought of looking for R2s on eBay, i would of thought it may be pretty had trying to search for them on there.

Well theres a moral to be learned, never sell your R2s on eBay, you get burned and makes the buyer all that much more happier than you would of ever been by selling it

Hahaha. I actually remember seeing that one and not bidding when I saw a user with Ollin and some numbers had the highest bid. Wound up being disappointed when I finished viewing it on the net anyway so I'll wait for R1s.

But, yeah, R2s on Ebay are a deal. I actually got the 6 DVD Vandread Season 1 with it's beautiful box for about 15 bucks. I honestly felt guilty buying from the guy. So much so that I wouldn't have given him negative feedback if he backed out. But sure enough I got the couple hundred dollars worth of DVDs in mint condition. Awesome.

Region free is the way to go. The R2 Mononoke Hime and Nausiacaa are great, but avoid the R2JP Spirited Away at all costs. The R2JP Spirited Away has an extreme red tint. For Spirited Away the R1 DVD has the best picture...

Nausicaa has mono(!!) sound. IIRC there was a surround track produced for it, but Miyazaki decided to scrap it. Maybe the Disney release will have surround.

Nausicaa has mono(!!) sound. IIRC there was a surround track produced for it, but Miyazaki decided to scrap it. Maybe the Disney release will have surround.

When they were producing the Nausicaa DVD in Japan, they were planning to produce a stereo mix for the release. But all the testing proved that it wasn't as good as the mono track, so they dropped the stereo mix. When Disney releases the Nausicaa R1 DVD, including an upmixed mono track in stereo would be stupid.

January 5th, 2005, 11:42 PM
it'd be nice for the music to be in stereo at least, because I'm used to hearing it on CD. The remastered Angel's Egg DVD did that... dropped in the stereo music mix, and added a little spacialization to the voices and sound effects to make it fit. Ghibli just needed to try harder. :P

January 8th, 2005, 06:51 PM
I believe Ollin has many of the Naruto R2s. If you're wondering about a box, I believe that the first press of vol. 1 came with one at select locations, and you had to assemble it yourself. I'm not sure if anyone around here has the Monster box, though...

Okay, after seeing many pics of the Cowboy Bebop box, I kind of regret cancelling my order for it, but, oh well, I'm happy with my R3s. I'm waiting for either a new format boxset or possibly a video remaster of the series before I dip again...

Speaking of R3s, I was bored right now and found a few nice discoveries on Yes Asia... an R3 Fullmetal Panic box, Azumanga Daioh box, as well as a S-Cry-ed box set. I previously thought that these were OOP, but it looks like they've been re-released... I am tempted to buy the Azumanga box, but will probably pass on the scryed and FMP boxes. If there was a FMP fumoffu box, I'd definitely dip though. I'm getting tempted to jump right back into the market... but I think the only major purchase I would be making in the future would be for a good Cowboy Bebop release, FLCL release, Kare Kano release, or an inevitable Eva re-release.

On a side note, I now have a list up on Animeka for my R2s and R3s. Great time to pick up some cheap R2s/R3s in great condition.

edit: it looks like the Azumanga box is a flip-top box release, as opposed to the box that looks to have been released previously... (check out Anime Fan's website (http://kr.blog.yahoo.com/mononarii/221024.html?p=2&pm=l) for pics of the older set). The older set looks really, really nice, so I am doubtful on the new set... Korean releases do impress me though, as they often include many copies of the R2 first pressings upon release. It looks like the new Azumanga box has a seperate box filled with extras, too...

The only shipping method being offered is EMS, which is unfortunate for those who prefer cheaper methods. I got a e-mail from AJ with this info, thought I'd share for those who frequent them like I do. It's especially unfortunate for those who don't know Japanese/don't have friends who are Japanese.

Also, it looks like Hellsing rescript finally gets released in the R3 market as well. Same R2 box art and cover art. I left the market, but Hellsing and Gunbuster are quite tempting. ^ The Naruto DVD's to not come with English subs. Here (http://www.animeondvd.com/discdata/subdublist.php) is a list of R2 and R3 DVD's with English subs. There aren't many...

Well the other guys are, not I. Plus some collect just for collecting purposes. I collect some LDs that have no English subs...

As well as some prefer the unfiltered, often better quality of R2s as opposed to R1s...

The short answer is "no." Considering all the anime R2 DVDs that are released all the time, it's very very rare for them to carry real English subtitles. You should never ask or expect what titles will have subtitles, especially for TV shows. Generally, Studio Ghibli films will almost always include English translation, although some specific ones have inaccurate dubtitles. Some OAVs, theatrical films, and Tenchi animation carry English dubs/dubtitles, and 99.9% of TV shows don't - with exceptions like SaiKano. Jinpun's link should help if you're interested in buying Japanese R2's with English translation, but like he said, there isn't too much a selection.

Lots of R2 DVD pics added to the blog since my last post. I bought the first 12 volumes of Naruto R2's last year. The series is going over 200 episodes definitly and there's really no way I can really afford to buy more R2's in the future.

Should be getting my March R2 order from @mazon Japan by next week at the earliest. Doing a lot of browsing through Yahoo Japan auctions lately and will purchase a few DVD's with the help of Misato.

*Faints from bloodloss upon seeing all the DearS covers together* Wow... Whats your opinion of the series? I hear its close to hentai without actually being hentai ^_^...

And that Samurai 7 box looks awesome...

So what are you going to do with the Naruto DVDs?

I thought DearS was an average series at best. Then again DearS is those type of anime I could rewatch and not get tired of it. It was a lot better than Chobits IMO. DearS wasn't close to hentai at all. Don't think there was actually nipples in the anime. It is fanservicey though.

Not doing anything with the Naruto DVD's. I probably won't even see 1/3 of the money I paid for the DVD's so it's not even worth selling. The first 30 episodes of the series is still was my favorite.

^ Well be sure to post some pics whenever you get em.

And I think that most ppl who frequent the DVD forum and this thread in particular are members of AoD...so they don't post here often. I know I usually see your stuff on their R2 Orgy thread first...

Very nice setup there Ollin, and i dont think Air could of been a better choice to complement the quality of your new TV.
Shame to see your taking a break for a while, but very much understandable, you can only take so much anime in your lifetime, and im sure you have interests in other places.
Well hope you dont stay to quiet, and be sure to update the blog, ive always liked looking at your new R2 hauls :)
