Pick a character, then make alterations to how the costumes look if you want. Then all you have to do is just go to a fabric store and look through patterns. (you generally need to alter patterns) Do all of this as far ahead of the convention as possible. That way any mistakes can be worked out. And if you don't know if the pattern will work, use cheap material for a prototype.Get a pic. of what you want to make and I might be able to help you out.

Hi, I always love cosplay but I don't have a sewing machine. I plan on buying one though but does anyone know where you could buy cheap premade outfits of craft books that tell how to make anime looking cloth that is if there one out there.
Thanks

Cheap sewing machines... Amazon.com - They have one of those hand-held ones for 20 bucks - and the price goes up from there to small ones to extremely big ones.
As for making a costume, find a character you want - and get profile pictures. If you have an artbook of the series with the character in it - it will be much easier. Go to a fabric store (For Me it would be Rag Shop) and purchase a few yards and get to work. If you don't know how to sew I really suggest buying a book.

You can buy costumes on ebay. Although I have no clue how cheap they are, because I make mine. Have you ever thought of buying key pices to your outfit at a store then just makeing little adjustments. It might work for you.

costumes on ebay go for too much. generally you will find good costumes but they will be horribly overpriced. cheaper to make your own costumes, but if you don't know how to sew then ebay costumes will look better. my friends and I all make our own (well, we help each other alot as well) and they turn out pretty well, but most of us know how to sew and make props.

ditto to ditto. (lol, hahaha, too tempting.)
and yes, generally, it's the easiest thing to just buy it, but pre-made anime outfits can be pricey. like i've seen a sakura costume for 200 something dollars.
then there's the cheapest route of making everything. it's obviously the most time consuming.
generally i prefer the middle of the road. key elements that you really can't make, you should just buy. then, get generic materials for the rest of the costume.

cosplay from stores are very expensive, you almost do better to make them or atlease try to modify. Maybe you will get a good deal if you know a seamstress or something but thats about it.

that is a tough one, kimoro's are made wit silk, I don't even try to sew wit silk its hard >: I never tried to make from scratch myself but if I were you I'd try to get a pattern or something for one, or if you would like to make from scratch then do that.

Can anyone help me with this costume?

I'm going to buy some patterns and I was thinking, would the pattern for the body just be a close-fitting straight down dress?
Also, any tips would be much appreciated!

thats not a straight down dress o_O its obviously fluffy and will require the need of a petticoat to get that kinda fluff.

if you feel one up in and out 'a the fabric you could make one. You'll probably look really weird touching a petticoat in a store instead of buying it though. Whatever works for you though. I don't even know about using patterns so can't help ya there.

Actually clothes workers will take 2-3days to make a cosplay costume usually, cuz costumes always need to be custom made. But for some easy cosplay or you have chance to get cosplay clothes materials and friends who are good at sewing, you will be luck and will save much money, if you know some basic sewing skills, check the tutorial at http://www.miccostumes.com/blog/how-to-make-cosplay-costumes-without-sewing-machine,you can even make your costumes without a sew machine :naughty:
