Since we know its already going to be made by the next new person that comes in, I just thought it try to clear out alittle of the clutter here and already have the thread premade and stickied as to save from the same post happening 10 more times.

BTW I pick FF 9

Objective best- FF6
Subjective favorite- FF8

But the perfect Final Fantasy would have:

The hero of 4
The plot of 6
The villain of 7
The heroine of 8
The background graphics of 9
The summons of 10

Can't pick which one has the best music, since they all have good and bad songs and BGM.

Best Soundtrack
Best Character - Aeris (note character not characters)
Best Magic/Battle system
As for story well I am not sure I am torn between 4,6,7, and 8 on that issue.

Second place goes to 4 with 6 close behind and with 8 close behind that.

And I can also say
6
Best Soundtrack - 7's Aeris Theme is a rip-off of Aria De Mezzo Caraterre
Best Character - Terra Bradford (a pivotal character that is not a "main character"... in fact, there are no main characters in FF6)
Best Magic/Battle System - Espers
Best story with FF4 runner up.

Second place FF4, followed by FF9 with 7 leading close.

You are entitled to your view of each, but while "Aria De Mezzo Caraterre" is good... Thats the opera song right? Aeris' theme doesnt sound even remotely the same. And while both were impacting I found that Aeris' theme was much more so, but thats probably because the even that occured with it.

Both are good, but I definately prefer Aeris' theme. Actually those are two of the most memorable songs in gaming for me.

Six...do I have to say this every day in a new thread?lol
ff6, best and most realistic cast. Also the easiest cast ever to sypathize with in an rpg.
Although Xenogears was close ff6 beats itout for best story since it was just as good but much,MUCH clearer and easier to understand the first time around.
also for the same reasons ppl have already listed that I may have missed.'FF4 was good and should be the runner up along w/ffx but ff6 is IMHO the only really great rpg in the ff series.

I've only played FF8, 10, and X-2.

And of those, I'd have to say that 10 was my favorite. 8 was great and all (story, characters, world), however one of my main gripes was the ATB.

FFX and the CTB, which allowed me to plan out my moves precisely, like a game of chess.

I can't remember how many times, in the heat of battle on FF8, that I wanted to cast Firaga on someone and ended up doing tornado instead<_<

Y'see... that's why these kinds of threads are ****ing retarded. People see "Best" and think they are being super bright by choosing not only their favorite, but what would be considered the best in regards to all Final Fantasilian standards. But frankly, to judge a game as "the best" is ****ing retarded.

The best graphics, are certainly not subjective (although can be, if we are basing good graphics on a creative and artistic level). The best music, can be argued as being not subjective (theory and such). The controls as well, are objective in that... if they are unresponsive and intrusive... then they certainly aren't the best.

But what about the story? That is the girth of an RPG.... and hecka ****ing dumb people think that you can determine a BEST story, and thus, a best FF.

That's the densest **** I've ever heard in my life. Unless you are an English professor and are basing the judgment of the story on categorical discrepancies (dialogue sentence structure, time structure adherence... etc), you can't say whether a story is the best. "but FF_'s storyz was teh deepest omg!1!!" ********. Depth, emotion, and quality (of impact) of a story are beyond subjective. A story is art, and no matter what some dipshit tells you, art has no scale of quality.

Thus... this thread is mentally retarded. Change the title to "What is Your Favorite Final Fantasy" and it could hold its own. Until then, I put the "PMA **** of Approval" sticker on it.

And no, the fact that posted earlier in the thread has nothing to do with this. So remember kids, don't make stupid posts in stupid threads.

If I didn't rate solely by gameplay, your words would probably ring truer to me. As is, I pick the one with the most min/maxxing. I know damn well that's not everyone's standard for gameplay goodness, but it is mine.

FFT.

Yes, I actually took the time to read this thread. So here is my statement.

I hate the plot of every FF game I have ever played. The plots almost invariably make me cringe. Waay too much dialogue, too little substance. As a fiction writer I can appreciate the need for character development, but when a twenty minute scene has two characters talking to each other. Now, keep in mind, they have a crush on each other, but are completely incapable of actually expressing their thoughts to each other because they are stereotypical. Meanwhile, I'm sitting here thanking the gods I didn't pay for this crap. (To date I have only payed $10 for FFX and $10 for FFT. Every other one I've gotten for free somehow, except for the few I haven't played).

Okay, granted, this isn't the entire plot. Woo-hoo, now another character comes into the scene, and they start talking about some touching event that has happened in the recent past. I think, 'Dammit, why did I take this thing for free?!'. Then the next morning (These scenes where people express their innermost feelings invariably happen either in the dead of night or the middle of a crowded street) they go off and continue their careers of mass-murdering sewer monsters for paltry sums of money.

...Some might say I shouldn't talk about one of my favorite series like that, but it's the truth. I dislike the plots. The gameplay is good in many, at least good enough to play. The best game is FFT.

Rant aside, I have to ask: Music and artful graphics are not art, but plot is? I'm not flaming you or anything, I'm just confused.

I'm not an "anti-FFVII" person, I just don't like people who play it for Cloud and Sephroth. I have the game, and I like it a lot, but it's not like Cloud and Sephroth are the hottest things ever made by Square. (That would be Squall, Seifer, and Caim... XD Oh.... and Ansem... XDDD) Nintendo rocks! Who would be against it?!?! It's one of the very first systems ever created!!! (It's what I bloody grew up on!!) And also the very first Final Fantasys were for SNES, which if you like Final Fantasy and not Nintendo, that just compleate hypocracy.

The best Final Fantasy games are to the eyes of a person. What I loved about this series was how different every single successing game seemed to be from the other. This series has been around for about 20 years and it's definitely gamed the reputation as being one of the best all-time RPG series ever created. I think that's why this series has so many followers over time over the generation and it doesn't need a reason as to why it has become so great.

My favorite Final Fantasy must've been X because I totally loved the music, the story, and especially the characters and their personalities. I'd love to play FFX-2 soon enough. I also liked IV and IX, because I had so many memorable times with them. FFIV is an excellent game and I love the battle music, and FFIX is almost like it returned to the roots of the first Final Fantasy games. Both were very fun!!! Other than these, I haven't played any of the other Final Fantasy games yet.

Final Fantasy VII was my first FF game, so naturally it's my most favorite. But a strong second is Final Fantasy X -- for overall story only. The gameplay was mediocre, and I didn't like Blitzball, either.
Then you should try VI. (Just a suggestion :) )

My favorite is X and X-2. Though most people hated X-2 I liked it because of the Battle System, character developement, the love story and the music, plus it s a sequal so If I like X I have to like X-2.

FFVII I found is incredibly overrated. Its a good game, I just dont see why everyone obsesses it. I dont like the characters, the graphics were disgusting, and there a few grammer errors which I even notice one around 10 minutes into the game.

FFVIII I really like because of the story and the characters.

FFX is my favorite. It revolutionized FF with amazing graphics, hugely detailed Computer graphic cinematics, great flat out story without all this mystery complex. I didnt like how FFVII just kept giving you question after question, FFX pretty much flat out tells you your mission and simply puts many obsticals in the way. I liked most of the characters, the world was awsome, I liked how it was narrated by Tidus which gave a nice appeal. I Liked the turn based tracker, the aeons, the sphere grid was awsome, it didnt restrict you so much, I didnt like the blitzball, I didnt play it long enough to understand it. Another great feature was the fact that the weapons didnt just add strength, every weapon had a different function, like adding MP HP, defense strength luck, speed, AP, exp manipulations, rather then the weapons just being +1 power +2 power +6 power ect. You could also use mixtures of items to create your own ability for the weapon.

I thought the story for VI is the best of all the FFgames, mainly coz its the first to have a female lead, but the way that the story unfolded was excelent and the way that you had to use different characters to progress in certain areas, such as when terra goes all esper like and the espers themselves looked pretty neat considering its a SNES game, even the soundtrack was cool as well, but this is only my 3rd fave FF coz VII is my #1 as its the first RPG i played and IX just coz of the lighthearted and comic like plotline and colourfull characters, it brought the FF series out of the realistic and seriousness that FFVIII had portrayed.

Actually, FFX's sphere grid isn't that revolutionary. You start off pretty much on a set path and about halfway through you start being able to make your party of demigods like in every Final Fantasy since V onward. I just covered up levels with something really fancy and pretty.

FFVI - Actually, I would argue that once you get a few hours in, it stops having a main character. It fleshes out almost all the characters out well (except maybe Gogo and Umero, but they really don't count).

FFVIII - I have 2 main problems with it that aren't gameplay. First is that as a love story, it isn't that interesting. Honestly I though FFVII would have been a better love story (Cloud/Tifa/Aeris love triangle > Rinoa trying to break Squall out of his shell). Second is that the only characters I found that I liked in it were the temporary party members (Seifer, Edea, Laguna, Kiros and Ward). When you don't like ANY of the main cast, its hard to really connect to a game.

I actually found the sphere grid system in Final Fantasy X to be something nice. You do start off with a set path, but every path has attributes and magic other paths don't have and as soon as you get teleportation spheres or level key spheres, you could broaden your horizons with abou how you want to customize your character. It's one of the best aspects I found about this game.

Final Fantasy VII will probably always will be my fave game. I got it about six years ago and I'm still playing it. The story is definately the best, the battle system rocked, the mini-games were really fun, the graphix were amazing for it's time and the soundtrack is fantastic.

Final Fantasy X came very close though. And I'd have to say that Blitzball is probably the best mini-game I ever played.

Final Fantasy X, personally.
What a lot of people who do complain about FFX being over-rated...it was originally supposed to have visible enemies on screen, open battles similiar to 11, an open world that was originally much larger and would allow open map travels from town to town, a better looking airship imo, that was not...pink and a lot more bonus features/bosses...but guess who screwed that up?
The fans...they couldn't be patient enough (in either U.S OR Japan...)
so...yeah. We kind of screwed ourselves out of what we could get from FFX.
FFXI comes next...this game simply takes my breath away (haven't played it in 3 months...and now my hard worked character is deleted and I must start over T_T)
FF7 was a pretty solid rpg and opened the gate for a lot of good rpgs. However, it is a bit over rated. I truly hope the don't ruin what story it had (a.k.a...making people think Sephiroth was the mastermind...) or by bring back Aeris in advent children... I really hope they keep the most over rated death in gaming history from exploding. DOES NO ONE NOT REMEMBER THY SHADOW?
FF6, I got this with the Anthology packet awhile back. I love it. However, I don't personally think it's the greatest FF (nor greatest RPG, which no final fantasy takes)
FFX-2...It was a solid rpg...but I don't think this FFV inspired game was the best final fantasy or top notch in any shape or form, it was what it was supposed to be, a side-story to FFX, and it did a pretty solid job. Because of this, along with the success of FFX and Kingdom Hearts, we're getting Advent Children...so even if you didn't like this "Charlie Angels" (most people complaining about this never saw charlie's angels and were never alive when the show aired...ironic?) themed game.

FF7, followed by FFIX, then FFVI.

FF7- What a story. Amazing story, Sephiroth was the perfect villain, sidequests ahoy and the appeal to all sorts of gamers; the run-through and the level-up-to-level-3 million-on-the-first-dungeon.

FFIX- Again a great story; I loved the olden feel of it and it was just an awesome FF.

FFVI- Anyone who argues that Kefka did not rule royally and made the perfect villain evar will be shot.

I think FF7 is the best FF.... that or tactics but yep I also think it's overated.....

I also think Cowboy Bebop is overated but it's in my top 3 anime series.....

I just love it when you say Eva is overated and the fanboys slag you off showing how stupid they are.

Final fantasy VII in my opinion is definitely the best final fantasy and one of the greatest games ever,Followed by Final fantasy VI.

About things being overrated,To say something is overrated is to say to you its of course rated too high. Mostly i hear people call popular series and games etc. etc. overrated..but who is anybody to say a group of people rates a certain anime or game too high..what makes their opinion so superior they could judge and say it doesn't deserve the praise(Or anything else for that matter). it seems a little stupid to keep calling things overrated just because you don't agree with other people-Its all opinions.

This is true, but if you were on the other end, you'd probably be calling it overrated too. Judging by crappy Gamefaqs, FF7 is overrated if it's anything short of the greatest game ever. Personally, I think a lot of entries it it's own series stand up against it too well for it to possibly get that acclaim but who cares. It's Gamefaqs, the domain ruled by teenagers and FAQ-starved RPGers.

I'd say gamefaq's isn't overrating FFVII,They're just making a controversial almost uneducated comment on the game. Its good to say its one of the greatest(Opinion)but in no way can you say its the greatest EVER(thats just disregarding every other great games)

Platforms seem to diversify the games greatly because of limitations, but here goes.

NES (this includes the Japanese 2 and 3): 3
SNES : 3(6 in Japan)
PS : 7
PS2 : I'm hoping that 12 will be better than 10

Ugh. The Zidane vs Blank duel I quite enjoyed, it was pretty fun. But the rest were a pain in the ***. Mainly the race in Alexandria against Hippaul (I think it's him anyway, when you've got to use Vivi), and the skipping. Being the completist I am, I went through all of them. I never want to do the Hippaul racing. Ever again. I'd rather do the damn skipping game repeatedly than go through that hell.

Personally, I'm a fan of VI. Great characters, story, music (and sound effects - Kefka's laugh XD), and the esper system is brilliant. And Shadow is quite clearly the r0xor. Final Fantasy VI has a magic that I feel that none of the subsequent games have managed to capture. I don't think the post-VI games are bad by any means, I just don't think they're as good as the SNES FF games.

I think the best game overall was FF5, just because the character classes were so fun. I think FF9 came close, but the card mini-game was a huge disappointment that no rewards ever came of it. FF8 was good in at least that respect.

This one's are hard one for me because I love them all. The only ones I have not played yet are 6 and 10-2.

But I really injoyed FF9 alot I loved the party they were so full of life and I really felt sorry for some of them at times. and ff4 gave me the same feelings. But sence I must choose I will pick FF4, Cecil was a very cool person and his pic looked very nice (white hair ^_^ ) and the story was soooo well done, I mean there where twist and turns in the plot all over the place,I was so into the story that I did not want to stop playing. There was not one person in the game I did'nt like, heck I even liked the enemys!
And as a added bonus you could have 5 people in a battle! I never felt so safe walking around in a ff world. :)

Best FF games, in my opinion, are FF6 and FF10.

FF6 - Classic, seriously, if you don't like this game it's because you're too into high-end graphics. Anyway, as far as the elements go, excellent game play, lots of hours with an excellent story to keep you going. The character build is great, and the main enemy (Kefka) was a well-thought-up villain.

FFX - Story was well made. This one was a love story, but all FF games has a small portion of a love story enveloped by the fantasy world. Unlike the others though, FFX was very unique in the way it was made. Take the skill system for example, one could spend hours unlocking each and every skill for each character.

Anyway, those are all just my opinions.

FF7, FF8, FF9, FF10, and FFX-2 are the best ones. Especially FF7 and FF8. I love all FFs though ^_^

FF7: The story is awesome, the characters are great, the battle system is cool! Yeah, the graphics aren't that neat...but the character designs are good! Just look at Cloud! Great music {Nobuo ROCKS}! I like the stuff you get to do. {Like ride a motorcycle, snowboard...}

FF8: Love the story, the graphics are good for it's time.....the movie graphics are great though.... love the character designs!!!!!! Ahem....The dialogue is great, the battle system, equip system, and junction system may be harsh, but video games aren't meant to be a piece o' cake all over! ^_^ Great music! This just rocks! What a beautiful story.

FF9: The story is good, the characters are good, the movie graphics are great! I like the science of the FF9 universe. The Terra and Gaia thing...I really like that. The battle system's great and Trance rocks.

FF10: Another beautiful story. I love the story, the characters, the graphics are great. The Sphere Grid's cool, because unlike FF9-- where only black mages could do black magic and summoners could cast white magic, the Sphere Grid allows any party member to use any kind of magic, ability, and skill {except for blue magic}. The music rocks! There are voices on this one. They are OK. The movies rock!

FFX-2: The graphics are great, the music's good {I love 1000 Words}, the voices are better, but I'm not to hot on the story overall. They turned Yuna and Rikku into pop stars... And Paine just seemed to pop outta nowhere. Yeah we know some things about her, but....she's still a mystery. There are still things about the story I like though. I like Lenne. I will still add this to my faves because I still love the game.

i like FFX, not just becuase it's the only FF game i'v played, the Graphics are awsome (however i have seen beter graphics in other game genres) the story is ok, there is a good set of characters, the only thing i have against it are the voice actors, there tones are way off, and some have no feeling whatsoever. i have seen graphics from other FF games and this one seems to be the leader.

And I'd give a lot to play FFVI, it's just that it's really hard to come by and friggen expensieve. Sorry, but I can't afford to spend over 100$ on a videogame with my current economic status. FFX was the first FF I ever played so it will hit home as my favorite. I have played FF Dawn of Souls and liked FF1 but I did not like FF2 all that much. I have played FF7, FF8 and I liked them both for the most part. FFX-2 was weak but the battle system was very nice...but I have yet to finish that one when I heard Yuna copy Rikku saying "Oh Pooie(sp)" I just dropped the controller and have not played it again. FFT was very good I loved tha game. I did not think FFTA was as good FFT but a good game. I have not gotten around to playing the other FFs but I'm looking forward to playing them like FFVI all my friends have been try to get me to play this one so this is the one I'm gonna play next.

My First Final Fantasy was the English Final Fantasy II for SNES. I bought every FF since then that was released in the US , and played FFV on emulator, and FF7 is by far my favorite still.

I still think the best Final Fantasy is going to be Unlucky 13. I think that the should make it into a horror type- dark scary story where at the end, your main character dies... that would be a twist huh :)

My no. 1 FF game is FFVIII. eventhough the juction and draw systems were a pain, the story vindicates it. The story was deep and complex and dealt with more than just chasing the bad guy around all game. For the softy game players out there it had a very sweet love story. Squall was really easy to relate to (how many of you were filled with teenaged angst when you played it) and I was really glad there was a completely happy ending. And NO CHIBI characters.

On the gameplay aspects I like FFX-2 battle system (only wish there were limitbreaks) FFVII's materia system was easy and allowed you to make you characters super-warriors.

Shame 8 had such a horrid leveling system, else I may prefer it over 7.
If they had made say, junctions increase your stats less, but max stats be better. Like even with 255 str you might not do 9999, with 255 you should always do it, but 255 should be harder to get than 100 ultimas to strength.

SHould of made levels like normal games, a good thing as opposed to a bad thing where monster strength increases more than your own.

If they had just done those two things, I would like playing through it multiple times much more.

Plus, the story line was just so imaginative and creative that no other game could come close! Every final fantasy game prior to VII was in some way really based on VII. Plus, this is the only final fantasy where they are finally coming out with a movie based after the events of it. FINAL FANTASY ADVENT CHILDREN! FFVIII is my fav. like I've said before. Anyway, The no chibi characters was a big plus. the story was a serious one and had comedy in all the right spots. And chibi peeps would have been stupid. I'm not a big fan of Chibi people in new RPG's. C'mon, they need to stop making games that try to represent old school RPG's. I'm not saying you cant have chibi characters but that's all there is now!
Anyway, thats off topic but I just thought I had to get it out there.

VIII had the best ending bar none. My favourite though is FFT I love the story and the extras (ala Cloud) you could get out of it. The fact that several of the Lucavi and Ivalice is in the new FF game it makes it a must buy for me.

1st: FF8
2nd: FF5
3rd: FF7
4th: FF2
5th: N/A

Thats my list. Once you learn the workings of FF8 it becomes incredibly in depth and simply amazing. If you think its too complex or hard then you still dont understand it or your just complaining. Of course if you didnt like the story or Characters thats your opinion and I cant change that nor will I try.

I think FF8 has a great Story some great Characters such as....
Quistis, Squall, Zell, Seipher, Rinoa, Fujin/Rajin, and many more. The battle system as I said before I love and the Graphics (For its time) and difficutly are great.

FF5 I simply loved, I played it on my computer with an Emulator years ago and I was just knee deep in its gameplay and storyline.

I would list the others but its all basicly the same. I love 7 even though I dont like Cloud all too much but I like Sepiroth allot.

Final Fantasy VII because of the awesome characters and the battle system/leveling system. I like the materia idea. And... well, mostly for the story. It was challenging and fun to play ^_^

Followed by X (NOT X-2--That game shouldn't have been made), especially the Japanese version... I love the voice acting and the story. Then, probably FFVIII, FFIX, and X-2 just isn't on the list.

1. FFVII is my favorite because the characters actually made me feel for them. I loved the story line and I actually cried during *ahem* certain events. The whole thing really drew me in. I went from playing FFX (my first Final Fantasy game) to FFVII's graphics and still loved it.
2. Final Fantasy X- Awesome graphics, good story, crappy and annoying voice acting (in English). I liked the gameplay and enjoyed the outcome of the story. Has the first and most horrible sequel to the FF series. ^_^
3. FFVIII- Good story, good characters, unique music, and enough drama to keep you playing for hours.

I think I liked Final Fantasy IX the most. Besides being my first Final Fantasy, I've always been sort of a sap for "buddy stories". The "friends helping each other to find their own way" theme is the one I liked the most between the Playstation games. It also had some of my favorite music.

Then there is Final Fantasy XI, which is more like an unhealthy obsession than my favorite game >_>

That was my only real bout with the Final Fantasy series, (I do have I&II for GBA), but I would like to try (the hard to find) X, and the upcoming XII.

Looking at em all, Eight has to be my overall favorite mostly because of the characters, the music, and of course the plot.

I liked the other too, but in their own ways. Six's Espers were really cool, and also its characters (btw characters is one of the main features i look for in games or anime if you havent noticed). Even though Two's music wasn't done by Nobou, i still liked a bunch of the songs; its battle music is one of my favorites. Seven is just classic and Nine has one of the best (and most anger inducing) challenges: the level one challenge. I would have liked Tactics more but i really suck at it (i hope i have enough patience to one day get good at it; i dont know why but i game over a lot in that game lol). The others are good too but i dont want to talk anymore because ive talked too much already and it has been 5 days since anyone has posted anyway...

The fact that you're trying desperately to save the world and FAIL! And then killing Kefka in hopes of saving what's left. Just the absolute coolest story of them all.

As for gameplay, I think it was the best since each character had their own class which left less time for having to beef up each character as multiple classes, gah.

Each FF has it's pluses and flaws which make it hard to choose which one is the best. Take in mind I've only played 1,2,4,7,8,9,10,10-2. For the best it would have to be between X VIII VII. I didn't really like X's random battles because they would be somewhat the same every time and some of the characters weren't that memorable(kimarhi ronso) I like 7's materia system over 8's draw. 8 has great characters so does 7 but 7 has the badass sephy and cloud. 8 has some great characters too but the backround story doesn't kick in quick enough. I like 8's world map better. 7's bosses were more memorable. 8 had a great musical score. I wish I can say both but I'd say 7 because it was my first and it sparked my interest for the other ffs.

Not bashing or anything....but:

You actually liked Tidus? I hated his pathetic sounding voice (and worse, you couldn't turn it off) and the fact that he complained throughout the entire game, which was short as a whole anyways. Battle system wasn’t anything special and the story was okay.

I like Tidus. I dont really know why people think he complained during the entire game. I didnt think he complained that much but when he did he had good reason to. He hated his father(his father was an a$$hole) and he was stuck in a foregin place. I also liked that he wasent much of a loner and was kinda of a happy go lucky person. Kinda like Zidane too. He helped cheer up many of his fellow party members.

Nano

they never get the main characters right a lot of the time
if sora was anything like cloud or squall he would killed those two clowns and joined up with well cloud or squall but they were infected with the strange love of Kingdom Hearts as well.
sorry, a bit of topic but thats what i look for in a main character alot of the time.
because if the happy go lucky personality is done wrong it just comes out gay.

i hated tidus. i hated the fact that he knew nothing about combat and acted tough. i hate that he was only "decent" in blitzball. argue all you want about him being amazing, but the only reason he was good lategame after you had all the best players was because of his incredibly high level (assuming that you keep him playing the whole time). i HATED the fact that he cried during the game. what kind of man is he? wah wah wah!~!, my father abandoned me over 10 years ago. grow up. cloud's mother died in a fire, squall never had parents to really mention.. but guess what?! they never cry about it!! like i said before, FFX's only saving grace was auron, quite possibly one of the most badass ff characters to date. btw, jecht > tidus. i would have much rather had jecht as the main character.

with that being said, my fav was 6, followed by 8, then by 7.
