Final Fantasy X is my favorite and it had the only ending of an FF game that moved me to tears, FFVII, FFVIII, and FFIX follow close by in that order :P

After having just finished FFIX, thus completing all FF's except #XI, X-2 FFT and Crystal Chronicles, I can say without doubt that I consider FFVIII to be the best among a very good series. I'd tie all the rest in terms of preference, but I dislike FFVII. It got tedious by disc two and I was yawning through the rest of the story. Quite a bland game, if you ask me.

Top spot: FFVIII, almost tied with FFIX, but VIII edges over.
Second place: All the rest.
Last place: FFVII

I'm curious how you are playing FFXIII considering the PS3 isn't out yet, much less the game. ;)

My bad! I'm too used to seeing X's these days and not used enough to roman numerals, hence the confusion. It has been corrected.

I love the romance between Squall and Rinoa.
They are lovers for sure.

With the advent of FFXII, my favorite FF is still FFX.

FFXII is a close 2nd and one of the best games of the generation.

FFVII is the best to me, the other games (FFVII-FFX) had nice music but to me the games were too short and average or below average story lines

I think I've replied to this thread 5 or so times with the same response...oh well.

FFVI is and probably always will be the best FF to me. Great characters, great story, great music, great battle system. There really isn't anything in that game to hate. Unless you're one of the people that mind terribly the graphics...

Your obvservation sucks. FFVII was very overrated. And the storyline was pretty much average itself. FFVII can be beat in less than 40 hours as well. Don't go acting like that game was long.

it took me longer to beat FFVII than any other FF game and i dont care what you think about FFVII because the rest of the games werent that great

Go play Final Fantasy Tactics.

FFT > FFVII

Gotta love those FFVII fanboys. So that means if you beat your meat longer than FFVII, would that make it the greatest thing ever? Let me know when you do.

Now that I am playing FFIII and have finished FFXII, I think my personal favorites are III thru VI.

I love III for having 22+ jobs to customize. Although, its not as deep as V, it is still entertaining. Too bad its lacking in the story department. Its also unfortunate that I still havent played the absolute original of this game. I hope to one day.

IV for its character development and excellent plot. Also for introducing the beloved ATB system. I remember playing this game during my lonely middle school days on my SNES. Its one of my nostalgic favorites.

V is so wonderful. I love the characters and job system. V also has 22 jobs which you can customize with AP which I love. I still havent gotten the chance to play FFVA for its 4 new jobs yet, but hope to in the near future.

VI - I totally love the whole cast (ok.. except for Gau, maybe). This is also one of my nostalgic favorites since I had borrowed both II & III North American SNES cartridges from my neighbor. I still get a warm feeling inside remembering small things like the opera scene, tearing enemies up with Edgars chainsaw, Kefka's lake poisoning etc.

In the end, I love almost every FF game for its own merit. Even some of the weaker ones like Crystal Chronicles were somewhat enjoyable. =P

It's hard for me to pick a single Final Fantasy game I'd consider the best, because I love a few of them equally. I'll try to narrow it down, though.

1. Final Fantasy IV

Other games in the series have obviously been better when it comes to story and gameplay, but FFIV will always be the most memorable to me. FFI was one of the first games I ever played and I enjoyed it quite a bit, even though the farthest I ever got back in the day was to the Bahamut class change area when my NES got bumped and my save file was lost forever. We ended up selling our NES and games at a yard sale a couple years later and I never got a chance to finish it.

A few years later, though, we got an SNES. One day I saw FFIV (as "FFII") at a store and immediately snatched it up, brought it home, and enjoyed the hell out of it. It had the medieval setting and epic quest that made me fall in love with Final Fantasy in the first place, but it also had a great story and interesting characters.

It's quite dated now, but after playing every game in the series it's clear now that FFIV is what started it all. It was one of the first Japanese RPGs to have an epic story and actual character development, and a lot of the things we consider cliches in modern RPGs actually originated here. Because of all this, and because I would probably not be an FF or RPG fan if I hadn't played it, FFIV is my favourite game in the series.

2. Final Fantasy Tactics

I never expected a spin-off to be so damn good.

FFT has one of the best stories in a videogame to date, and in my opinion the best in the Final Fantasy series. A Shakespearean/Beowulfian/High Fantasy epic, FFT rekindled my love for the series when I thought it was becoming mediocre, cyber-punk trash. The strategic gameplay was also challenging and enjoyable, adding a new layer to an already complex game.

3. Final Fantasy VI

Perhaps the last numbered FF game to have a truly great story. Not only was the plot great, but the characters were some of the most likeable and intriguing out of any medium (whether it be videogames, movies or books) I've ever interacted with. Kefka, I'm looking at you.

On top of that, it just looked, played and sounded really damn nicely. Best soundtrack in the series, if you ask me.

4. Final Fantasy IX

Words cannot describe how disappointing the PS1 era of FF games was to me. I still remember the first time I saw the FFVII commercial with the motorcycle cutscene. I think the words that came out of my mouth were "what the hell?" Then FFVIII came along and it was basically more of the same, only with character models that didn't have blocks for hands. Needless to say I hated the direction the series seemed to be going in (though I've since matured and gotten over it), and when FFIX was announced I was probably the happiest person on the planet for a day.

I don't think I've ever been so hyped up for anything in my life. This was before sites like 1UP and GameSpot were common venues for videogame news, so I ended up buying about 20 different magazines just for little blurbs and a few screenshots. Seeing castles, princesses, knights, wizards with pointy hats, airships that looked like boats and freaking Moogles rendered in 3D made this one of my favourite FF games without even having played it yet.

When November of 2000 rolled around I went out and got it on the release date and fell in love immediately. Not only was it packed to the brim with references to previous FF games, but it was charming and fun in its own right. In fact, it was probably the most fun I've had in ages.

As for a number 5, one of these four might actually drop a spot to make way for FFXII once I beat it. Definitely having a great time with that one.

I love all of the final fantasy games but these are my top 5 favorites:

1. Final Fantasy VII (this one is and has always been my very top fav.)

2. Final Fantasy Tactics Advance

3. Final Fantasy Tactics

4. Final Fantasy IV and V

5. Final Fantasy I and II Dawn of Souls

I do have a question. I just managed to get Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest for SNES. I have to dig my SNES out of my closet which is gonna take me a while. What is this game like?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but, It isnt FFIII its FFIII: DS. FFIII was much different, and not released in English under no means. The way you're saying it there is as if FFVI and FFIII are different, well they are, but they are the same too, because VI was released as III in america. FFIII: DS Was nothing like the original FFIII either, like I said before, too much was changed and too much was left out. I personally would much rather mostly every original FF over the DS remake, I hate it. <3

Lunay
March 10th, 2007, 12:49 PM
Len, I was referring to the FFIII DS. I recently got the chance to play the original FFIII for a bit (maybe a few hours) and from what I can tell, they had the same "feel"; dungeons, world map, even the items found in the chest. The only difference, the ones I have spotted in the very short amount of time I have played the original at least (again, not the NA version of FFIII a.k.a. FFVI - damn them for releasing it that way), was that in the original, you had to earn job points(?) before changing classes (crystal weakness in the DS). Other more obvious changes should be common sense: graphics, maximum number of mobs in the battlefield, how your first job was the Onion Knight in the original, and I heard some job abilities were altered in the DS version, WiFi, additional quest and bosses, etc.

Again, that is just my simple observation from the short time I have played the original - I have completely dominated the DS version - and you probably have played the original more than I have, so, please do enlighten me to point out any error or additional difference between the two.

In closing.. Yes, I do agree with you that I usually prefer the original over the remake. And, yes, FFVI does rock like no other. =)

Len
March 10th, 2007, 12:52 PM
Nope, you're exactly right. DS was just meant to improve on FFIII and I don't think it did. It added a lot of useless things and sorta made the game boringly easy at parts. They were very much similar. Name changes and the like.. but the biggest difference was none of the characters survived.

FFV and FFVII. Had the best stories and characters. Thoug FFV was a tad laughable with villain named Ex-Death. But VII on the other hand had Barret (Mr.T liek character with gunarm.), Vincent, Cloud and Aeris. Not only that but Knights of the Round and Bahamut Zero summons rocked.

I would have to say Final Fantasy 4 (or once known as FF2 on the SNES).

I still think its one of the best storylines i ever played not to mention all the characters and unique cool places you explore.
(don't want to spoil it for anyone for ya but theres defently more! ).

You never played it..try it out sometime and im not talking about the DS remake either.(havent played that one yet)
If you want to play the orginal version I suggest the one on GBA. It has more options and extra dungeons. :)

I agree with the above poster. IX had the best characters, but the story could have been better...it was actually quite a good story, but not quite as good as sevens. The soundtrack also beats out all the other FFs.

Final Fantasy VII BORED the hell out of me because the characters were so dull and vapid with the most unconvincing motivations. So in this respect, IX is much superior to VII...

but, if the characters of IX were confronted with the situations presented in FFVII, you would probably have one of the best games ever made...

VII & VIII/X.

VII was the first one I played, when I was like 10, so essetianlly there is that nostalgia there, which immediatly makes me favour that one over the others. Obviously the music, storylines are tremendous, given that they didn't do voices.
and VIII/X...can't pick between those.

With 8 it was good that you got to be in Squall's thought and all, but the whole Laguna stuff annoyed me.
and X....it has Rikku!

I would run it down like this;

7-Best story by far.

4-Runner up for best story in spite of the translation problems that game has been cursed with.

5-Second best gameplay.

9-Best characters.

10-Second best story and one of the best in terms of overall preentation.

12-Hands down favorite of the entire franchise.

If I were to rank my top 5...

1. XII
2. A tie between VII and X
3. V
4. IV
5. Tactics.

VII: Great game. I replay it all the time.

X: Great game, I replay it more often than VII.

So I guess X.

X is essentially the first FF game I played (and also my first PS2 game, I was 11 or 12 at the time I played it)... So you can imagine how much I was moved by the graphics/story/etc... It will always have that special place.

VII, I played soon after first playing X, and it took me a LONG time to beat it. Regardless, I love it as well. VII had great music, simply beautiful. FFX however... the OST simply clicked with me. In game, that music works extreme magics, evenmoreso than in VII, for me. Just, all things considered, I have to go with FFX.

Final Fantasy V for me. The story is light-hearted with some occasionally deep moments that are unexpected and impressive. The gameplay is fun, with loads to explore and more customization options than most of the other games in the series. I suppose the Class System does force some unnecessary grinding, but I like that. I love a game that gives me the incentive to grind outside of "you gotta be strong enough to beat the boss". Basically, it's the perfect game fore me, and few others can top it.

I have played 4 ff games and out of them I think that ff 13 is the best, despite its linearity at first, it has a well put together story and great character development and the combat system is great.
