I've been neglecting to buy more manga, but I just got laid off a few weeks ago so I have to be choosy about what I buy. I haven't bought manga is so long that I really don't know whats out there, could someone give me some of their favs and why they like them? I like all genres except yaoi, thanks in advance!

So you want short series? Let's see...

If you want super short like 4-5 volumes, I recommend Paradise Kiss, The Demon Ororon or Azumanga Daioh.

The Demon Ororon just started so I can't really tell you on how the rest of the series turns out but the first volume was very good. It was pretty comical and angsty if you know what I mean. Azumanga Daioh, is just craziness. It's in a comic strip format so if you don't want your manga looking like an American comic, then don't go for it. Other than that, it's funny.

For 5-10 volumes in length: I would recommend Petshop of Horrors or Kodocha. Summaries can be found here. (http://www.tokyopop.com)

I know, I'm too lazy. >< And most of the ones I recommended are from Tokyopop since I haven't read a short series from Viz.

I would say go with GetBackers.

1. The characters are great. It's probably the only manga I own in which I don't hate so much as a single character. All of the characters are quite cool and interesting in their own respective ways

2. The art is prettiful^_^ Rando Ayamine really draws exceptionally well making everything really come to life.

3. It's exciting. There are plenty of fights and just action overall that can keep you on the edge of your seat.

4. It's fun. It's not that often that I laugh so hard when I read manga. I just found it to be quite funny:P

Rurouni Kenshin is one you should check out. Has enough action, drama, comedy, story, and character personality for anyone to like.

For romance, go with Marmalade Boy, Kare Kano, or Maison Ikkoku. GTO (Great Teacher Onizuka) is a fun series, too. Just some ideas for you to ponder...

If you want a short comedy/romance, check out Wish. I thought it was a cute series, and if you like comedy and action, try Vampire Game. ^_^

Kodocha is a great romantic comedy that's completely released and not too long (10 volumes). It follows the characters from 6th grade up through the end of junior high, so it's cool watching them grow up and go from childhood rivals to romantic couple. It mixes wacky comedy, romance, and some surprisingly serious drama at times.

Mars is good if you don't mind something a little longer (15 volumes). It's a darker, more angsty romantic drama (though it still has some comedy). This one is more high school characters with dark pasts and secrets.

Marmalade Boy and Peach Girl. They're both really good teen love stories.

If you want some short series...

There's Et Cetera by Tow Nakazaki, it feels fresh and original, mainly due to it's interesting and charismatic character as well as zany wild west action! GEMINI BULLET! Hehehehe. It's only 9 volumes if I'm not mistaken (or 7?) and it's coming out soon in English.

Mint Na Bokura in six volumes, by the author of Marmalade Boy if I recall. Junior high school romantic comedy... REALLY hilarious. It's about this boy, Noeru (or Noelle) who can't bear to be separated from his twin sister because she likes a guy in another school, so he want to follow her to her new school... only problem is... there's only 1 place left and it's for a girl! The interesting thing is that the comedy doesn't rely solely on that little lie.

As for other series I like...

Samurai Deeper Kyo... awesome supernatural sword swinging action with some of the most charismatic characters around, lost of mystery with well times answers leading to more questions! It's great and just keep getting better abd better with time. It's gory and longer tough. It's not even finished in Japan I believe.

Naruto! Long running ninja serie with deep character with lots of backstory and well developped motivation. A loveable cast at that where you never hate someone you'Re not supposed to hate and great action with interesting story.

I'll recommand Get Backers and Rurouni Kenshin too.

For an extermly short manga, try Short Program. It's one volume of short stories that have good characetrs and plot twists, despite being only twenty or so pages long.

I also reccomend Kare Kano (17+ volumes) and Suki (3 volumes). When leach comes out, I also reccomend it.

if you like humor, fanservice and a tiny bit of angst, dig up that old series Sorcerer Hunters. I liked it a lot better than the anime, and it's only 15ish books long.

Hellsing is extremly entertaining... Still waiting for volume 3.

Love Hina Completely re-ignited my love for manga... it had been years since I even thought of buying manga and I kept seeing Love Hina mangas at the video game stores I would go to.... and of course being the pervert that i am, the lovely ladies on cover and a quick flip though convinced me to buy #1.... then i got hooked. I just recently finished the series... AWESOME manga.

Naruto is something I just recently checked out because of this forum... everyone said how great it is so I picked it up... Im hooked on that one now too (damn you AN forums draining my feeble bank account)

And now I am stuck in transition... I finished love hina... and im waiting for naruto 4 and hellsing 3... damn the wait. :(

I think all of you would really enjoy reading Aria Vol. #1, put out by ADV Manga. ADV's titles haven't streamed nearly as well as Tokyopop or Viz's lineup, so I'm not surprised that no one talks about this one. The Aria manga is serene and lively. It takes place in a futuristic duplication of Italy, telling the life of an undine named Akari. She gives people tours, and cleans her preps with her undine partners. Her work outfit is superbly sweet as she rows her gondala. You'll feel cool and at ease with this one, trust me :)
