View Full Version : I found a MMORPG, but its free. Really good too.

This one's for the PC. Its called Priston Tale. Best of all.. its free. No montly fee and the download is free too. Here's the link:
Priston Tale (http://eng.pristontale.com)
Not very many english speaking players though. Remember this is a MMORPG, so if you know you don't like that kind of thing then you probably won't be interested.

Look around for open-Beta's. There are also many that offer 7 day trials.

I've looked around.. Priston Tale has some pretty nice graphics. Shattered Galaxy kinda looks like Starcraft. (not graphicly, gameplay wise) Those are probably some of the best I have run across. There is also Planeshift.
PlaneShift (http://www.planeshift.it/)
It has humans, elves, and dwarves for the races. There are more races too. I believe they are all playable.

I don't like the browser-based games.. I prefer graphical. I would love to play Final Fantasy XI, but that monthly fee and a hefty $50 price tag just for the software keeps me from buying it. You do get one month free when you buy it, but i'm on a low budget, ya know.

A server run by a private group, you just have to download a small file to do it. However most groups run on kRO sakray as to have the most up to date stuff, so you need to download that as well if you're going to do that.

Being a GM on a private server is interesting, make items then you can kill anything and anyone in one hit :D

It's jsut so damn obvious, private servers have been around even before RO went pay2play.

the main site doesnt say ANYTHING about it, and if the only time they talked about it was when they went pay2play or whatever, how do u think people after that knew about it...?

*points to my port at the end of the first page*

Private servers usually have higher XP rates than RO, they are also a lot less crowded. It can be good or bad, depending on what you're look for. You usually dont see people just traveling as there are usually special warp bots. But I imagine there are some that are identical to iRO... After playing on private servers, I missed the traveling around, but I didnt miss the lag in towns ^_^ .

But after becoming godly powerful and rich in private servers, I doubt I could ever play on the main with the low rates and a weak character again :D

I'm playing the Taiwanese Lineage II beta right now. A friend of mine found out a way to get into the beta really easily. He wrote up how to do it here (http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion.cfm/loadforum/496/loadthread/7503/setstart/1/loadclass/170) if any of you are interested in playing. All the NPC's in the game talk in Chinese though... so you're not gonna understand much, but there's an option to turn everything else in the game to English.

oh yeah, i forogt about these.

Archmage and Earth 2025. I dont remember the url's to these sites, but just goto www.google.com and type in their names, you should get it on the first page. They're kinda old though, and turn based

and one more, though it goes against my better judgement to say it: www.runescape.com .This one's not turn based, kinda iRO, but with worse graphics and an annoying chat system.

They require those so they can know where you are if you start doing something stupid like hacking the network or make a cheating program. They don't give it out to anybody. If you need more info read the privacy policy if they have one. The focus of this thread is supposed to be non-pay2play MMORPGs. Some of us cant buy FFXI b/c of that $50 price tag at Walmart. I have wanted to get into MMORPGs for awhile, and wanted to see if I'm actually going to be commited to paying for a game in that style. Thats why I chose a free one first.

I can probably answer your question. Priston Tale's servers go under alot of routine maintenance. If you find you can't connect, then you should check their website. It may see a notice saying "[date here] Server down for maintenance". That should solve that question.

Its a goood free one if you can get it to work. I didn't have any problems though.. @,@ ^o^

Here's an update. I found a good site for some open betas out there. onRPG.com's Free MMORPG Directory (http://www.onrpg.com/downcat4-0-dateA-10.html#categorystart) I'm sure this will help.
One of the cool one's I spotted is called Conquer. The background is 2D, but the characters are 3D. Heres the link.
Conquer (http://www.conqueronline.com) .

I also have my eyes on one called Mabinogi. I'm hoping they will release an english client for it. Check it out if you want.. but I certainly can't read any of it. Mabinogi (http://www.mabinogi.com)

My alias on Priston Tale is TauricWizard. So if you see me, maybe I can help you with the game.

This is going to sound stupid, but here goes:

The Priston Tail registration asks for a Zip-code. Even though I already selected Canada and "Cannot select" under states, it's still asking. Now, I have no flibbing idea how long(or what it looks like for that matter...) a zip code is. Help!

Edit:NM, I just entered 603-199 and it worked...-o-;

2nd Edit: Argh! Now it says it can't connect to the server!!!!! I sent an E-mail to tech support, hopefully they can clear it up. -_-;

DBFreak0426
January 26th, 2004, 03:00 PM
Actually, it will take forever if you just try to find me. The easiest way to locate somebody in PT is to open the chat menu by pressing Enter, and typing:
/: (Char Name)
example.. /: TauricWizard

hit enter after you type that. It will tell you if a person is online. To message someone do the same thing but type your message after that.
example.. /: TauricWizard (message)

On the server issue, Priston Tale's servers are undergoing a lot of occasional maintenance. I think they almost have all of the problems fixed though. If you can't connect, just try a few hours later, b/c they are probably doing maintenance.

DBFreak0426

Which kind of connection do you have? Cable, DSL, or dial-up? When you launch the program there is a settings option and you can change your "connection speed" for the game. It may be set too high if you are using dial-up. That might solve the problem.
But, like I said.. It might be that they are doing maintenance.

You can also adjust the graphical setting in the setup menu. This can help you get better framerates and reduce lag time. I have mine set to Low Resolution, but with High Detail.

It should also be noted that I just checked the website today. 1/27/2004:

Admin 01-27-04 6:16:28(GMT+09:00)

Server maintenance on 01-28-04

Dear all users,

There will be a scheduled server maintenance on january 28th.

Game servers will be down from 06:00 am to 9:00 am (Korea Standard Time).

Web server will be down from 06:00 am to 8:00 am (Korea Standard Time).

Thank you for your cooperation.

You can check what time it is in Korea on their website. They are one day ahead of us I do believe, so maintenance will be done today. During that time period you will not be able to connect.

Savage Eden is a pretty good one. It has a serious lack of content, but it's still entertaining. Reminds me a little of PSO, how there isn't much to do aside from leveling your character. I know it's not out yet, but keep an eye on Guild Wars (http://www.guildwars.com/). It's said not to have a monthly fee, don't know about the initial fee. But it looks and sounds very promising.

For all you Lineage freaks out there.. the American open beta is out. The game looks almost as good as FFXI. Be prepared for a whopping 1 GB client download though.

Download and playing is free. The game is in open beta. One day, it'll go to p2p... but they've still got alot of bugs to iron out. The game is okay. It isn't the best, and I certainly wouldn't pay to play it, but it's not bad for something free for now...

Possibly the MMORPG that'll give you the biggest bang for your buck is Guild Wars and Guild Wars: Factions. With no monthly payments and only the cost of actually buying the game to worry about, I definitely recommend it, if you are into MMORPGs that is.
