Vast amounts of great, and not-so-great, discussion disappeared into the ether before we caught on and started to independently back up the important stuff. Now it seems that fact of being a long-standing, current, and frequently posted to thread, rather than a guaranty of survival, is instead a criterion for excision. But, hey, it's their site, and they get to run it as they see fit...

I noticed the same thing in the Fan Art & Fiction subforum, quite some time back. More than half of the stories I'd indexed in the Fanfiction Index had been deleted, rendering the index useless. That's why I stopped updating it.

The only way I could make the Fanfiction Index work is if I created an "AN Writers" account on an external site (like Fanfiction.net or MediaMiner), then archived the stuff there and linked to it from the sticky. But all that would do is encourage people to go elsewhere, which defeats the purpose of a sticky thread.

In a way I kinda get why those threads got deleted, from a DB point of view. The threads with stories in them don't get updated often, and after the stories are finished, they don't get updated at all. If I was a DB Admin doing a search for threads that hadn't been updated in X days, I can see where fanfic threads would pop up in my search. Of course, if a human being were to go through and see what the content was, he might say, "Ah, that's real content we need to keep in order to maintain the forum's appeal among members of the fanbase..."

But maintaining forum appeal doesn't seem to be a top administrative priority at AN, so my fanfic index is useless and priceless time capsules like Go Hikari! get the axe. More's the pity. It makes me wonder what kind of a wasteland this place is gonna be in another couple of years; it's already a shadow of its former self.

Ah, well. It ain't my name on the shingle, so I guess it ain't my problem.

Just one more thing, I thought the reason for the purging of most of these threads was 1) because of the bandwidth and 2) most were throw away threads anyway. If it was actually a way to keep a monumental thread such as this, why wasn't that option looked at from the get go? Because the moderating would be to hard?

I'm sure that if a problem were to come up in the past it would have been dealt with, if not by the mods, by the AN member's (who in turn would report any wrong doing, in fear of losing such a grand thread). 5 years and 4.5K post later pretty much proves that this thread and the members can handle themselves quite fine. so give us just a bit more credit than that.

And why was my previous post deleted? I wasn't off topic anymore than the other people that posted in the last few pages, if at all.

P.S. I totally don't mind this thread getting axed now that I have it archived. Or if the rest of this thread gets axed and a new thread is started starting from this page. Most of the time people posting images don't check the entire thread to see if it's been posted already anyways.

Edit: Seems a switch is down and I'm 1000 miles away for Christmas and can't reboot it. Unfortunately, everyone else is also away for Christmas so the switch will be down until someone comes back. So until then, nobody will be able to see the images.

Another reason why the community here at AN is dieing, because the folks in charge think deleting old threads helps the forums.

I don't think it's that. I think that as time goes on, people's lives change and they move away from the forum because of various reasons. School, work, in rare cases finding someone(:lol:), or finding another forum that is like what AN used to be years ago (if that's even possible).

Lately this forum has seen extremely rapid decline. And it's sad, because everywhere you look at other message boards you find complete idiots everywhere. Maybe we can contact a lot of the old members that have left to other forums (sometimes they're several on the same site) and bring them back?

We can't let AN die.

The figure itself is a 1:1 rendition of Rei, constructed out of FRP (fibre reinforced plastic) – it is 160cm tall and weighs 6kg. Manufacture took a month per item, it is said.

I find the image both funny and disturbing. Kind of reminds me of my own attempts to get under fanboys' skin, except it just makes their hot chickas members of the Gloop family instead of replacing them with Evas. There's a booklet with a short description of each card, the regular and inverted readings of them and a couple of ways you can spread them - recognised the celtic cross but the other one written about is called 「ヘキサグラム法」 hexagram method, which I haven't seen before.

True story, back in the old days I backed up various threads in the Spam Containment Area so they could be restored if deleted. Once I did that with a thread (S-Club) that was so big no one could load the boards while it was copied :D
