And for the record what is it with suicidal cyborgs? It seems to be a recurring theme in anime. Keel, Ziggy, Elsa de Sica, Henrietta, and Motoko could be argued as suicidal. Really the only anime cyborgs without a death wish are Grobyc (don't ask me how to pronounce it he's from a game with no VA's) and the lovely maniacal Allen Gabriel. The irony here, they are cyborgs because they would have died without said implants (or in Ziggy's case were brought back from the dead) and have decided that now's a good time to contemplate suicide now that they have their nice shiny new expensive cyborg bodies. This makes no sense!

Seems more like Seele was the financial backing of Yui's research at the university, instead of Yui being a secret member of Seele. This was in 1999, when both Yui and Fuyutsuki were still at Kyoto University. Looks like Gendo wanted to get to the support organization through Yui (and succeeded). Whether or not the first quote can be taken literally as in Seele belongs to Gendo, I'd say no. More like, he was part of the organization, as in "I don't like the way your team cheats when my team plays fair."

As far as Yui pre-CE, it just seemed like she was a member of Gehirn, head of Project E, who also happen to have the same support organization funding it.

No one's really evil, but Yui's wasn't all that great herself, she planned on 3I every bit as much as Keel & co, and Gendo. Her version just left her to go off and supposedly start life somewhere else as a god. Yui wanted to stop SEELE's plan only so she could fulfill her own wishes. Poor Shinji, great parents don't ya think?

It's hardly arrogance, since it implies sacrificing everything and suffering in complete solitude for what stands to be billions upon billions of years to satisfy an obligation to humanity as a whole (which far transcends our own species). In a very real sense, she is the hero of NGE, without whom everything would have ended in complete ruin. She is also used by Anno, along with the other two SoLs, to impart to the audience his ultimate message about life and how to find happiness. Although, of course, Shinji and Asuka are used to show how the harsh reality of life makes it difficult to attain that happiness in the final scene.

Detesting Yui is simply missing the entire point of her character and how absolutely CRITICAL she is to the story, in my humble opinion. Siding with Seele, the antagonists of the story, is probably missing the point, too. They are the ones who have abandoned all hope and simply want to destroy everyone, including themselves, to return to the pure and original state that is virtually equivalent to death itself. NGE is trying to tell the audience to LIVE and find happiness, not to give up and seek death. That's not to say that you can't be a fan -- of course you can -- only that I think you should recognize the roles that these characters are satisfying in the story. (Note disclaimers.)

mm3, read my huge-arse threads if you care about how Yui fits into things. The Rei/Kaworu one and the Yui/Kyoko one are especially relevant, although they will probably eat up a couple of hours and will hurt your brain a lot. Keep the serious conversation there, please, and most of this has been AMPLY covered already besides. This is an image/spam thread.

I just don't like Yui and never will, trying to attain godhood in my mind is the ultimate immorality (as I beleive that weilding absolute power over even one person without any form of consent is immoral, and determing the fate of entire race by your lonesome makes it that much worse, at least SEELE wasn't one person whistling in the dark), besides if she's going to start life somewhere else she ain't gonna be lonely. SEELE just wanted to end pain/suffering/loneliness and thanks to Gendo's brilliant HCP they latched onto a very baaaaad idea. Originaly they just wanted to stop the angels, and evolve humanity Yui said it herself.

BTW I've actually seen a preserved pig fetus suffering from this condition, its the freakiest thing ever, one huge eye dead center of where the eyes should be, much larger than with the human sample.

They appeared to be having a LOT of problems with those prototypes, so I guess "You take what you can get". Besides, they needed a one-eyed Eva so that we could have the "Seven Eyes of God" thing going on with the main three. ;) Also, because they needed to make a gratuitous design reference to Gunbuster.

Zero doesn't have any distinct nostril openings in the helmet, unlike the other original Evas, so this one is a mystery. She's only, on rare occasions, depicted with ONE arched aperature to the left of the red lens covering her eye. Weird. So I just use artistic license, in lieu of anything better.

And EVA-02 and up have the nostrils above the eyes, yes indeedy. But EVA-01, who I think is meant to be taken as the "default" and the most representative of the unaltered condition (in other words, closest to Adam, ironically enough), has her nostrils in the expected place. They apparently migrated upwards for some reason with Kyoko's tweakage, and, although the blood composition mods weren't maintained in the American twins, the nasal alteration is still present, so I guess all of her work wasn't for nought.

There are two options for you here.

1. There are a few Rei pics where she does indeed weild a gun. Her with an MP5 and dressed in a maid outfit and a war on terror action figure (no, I'm not making this up) are two, and there's a couple of others as well that I cannot remember. There's also something from the manga I think where Rei is holding guns like Chow Yun Fat.

2. Jo from Burst Angel is very much a Rei clone, in both looks and personnality (that may be debateable). She commonly holds duel Desert Eagles.

I think it was something we discussed before, with how Rei is just like the others and is wondering just what the hell she had gotten herself into, will need to dig that thread up. The sick @#%$ skips from Rei impailing Lilith to Touji being selected as a pilot.

Which is to bad, as the resulting scene of Misato and the commitee is fascinating. And any loss of commitee and Keel scenes is sad in my book. But Sadamoto makes up for it in vol. 7 by injecting more new commitee goodness.

I was reading up on racial slurs (don't ask) and found that many asian slurs referring to whites have to do with pointed or big noses.

Could Vlad and Pierre's noses be intended as a racist visual gag?

I love them they are so damn funny! Whenever I watch them I crack up laughing! But I've always thought there were some racist overtones with the Frenchie....but than again he is a "cheese-eating-surrender-monkey". There are two options for you here.

1. There are a few Rei pics where she does indeed weild a gun. Her with an MP5 and dressed in a maid outfit and a war on terror action figure (no, I'm not making this up) are two, and there's a couple of others as well that I cannot remember. There's also something from the manga I think where Rei is holding guns like Chow Yun Fat.
I actually have the two War on Terror figures on my bookshelf. ^_^

I may be the only person on this forum to think this, but I feel that piloting Eva is a huge deal, that normal people cannot deal with it, and that while the 3 Eva pilots all have serious problems, that their problems actually help them continue piloting Eva and prolong the inevitable breakdown (albeit when the breakdown occurs it's really bad). On this basis, I would like to say that Hikari would so get owned if she was an Eva pilot.

It's not really related to this thread, but I had a dream last night that crossed the game Katamari Damacy and Evangelion. Gendo was very big. And the prince was very small. He destroyed all the stars in the sky while drunk and also broke half the planet, and this was called the 2nd impact.

Then he forced his son to roll up the world into one giant ball of single conciousness of love with no hurt. There was much screaming. And at the end, there was a giant ball.. and the prince going "I don't want to be part of the ball! I have my individuality!! ... I feel so very lonely. kh kh kh [sob]".

Meg infiltrates a school where the prefects are part of some cult, and one night she sees a student (she has Rei's looks and personnality, even though Jo looks more like her and the girl is more friendly than Rei) try and commit suicide by jumping off a building. Meg stops her and has her sleep with her for the night, and gets all philosophical about what happened. Don't worry, she really just says how people are meant to live, and if she throws herself off that building her head will crack open and brains will spill out like garbage. There is no great hereafter waiting for her if she kills herself. Meg says how someone special told her that, Jo. Later Jo comes in to save Meg and help uncover the truth, and she encounters the Rei clone a couple of times, who is nice and normal now. The cult does something to her, but is saved by Meg and Jo. Meg visits her in hospital, and later talks to Jo about it who comforts her.

EVA-05 clasps the plating covering the face of Sangouki and draw her closer. The long, thick-lipped mouth begins to gape.

EVA-03's neck begins to stiffen and quiver. Gogouki's thin, bony fingers dig into the recesses of the interconnected facial plates and, quickly but sensitively, yank them off. Wires snapping, the Eva's naked face is revealed, and the amorous Mass Production Model immediately follows up with the jaw piece. Like worthless pieces of scrap, both are discarded recklessly, crashing into the homes of evacuated civilians.
EVA-05 begins to pant like some kind of uncanny bird, albeit one with shiny red lips and a long, grey, glimmering tongue hanging limply from the side of the mouth. Sangouki's eyes -- colored as if an albino's, despite her dark, reddish-brown skin -- gape wide, the three auxiliary pupils dilated, her teeth bared in an uncertain grimace...
Save for the slightly less exotic eyes, Toji's expression is not incredibly different.

Back at the Command Center.
Ritsuko (MONO - continuing) "...And, now, these innocent Children are going to pay for it, with the vicarious sacrifice of their vir--"
Maya (cuts in) "Neurological feedback to the pilots is reaching critical levels! Synchro rates are increasing on a cascading scale!"
Misato "Cut off all synchronization! Eject the entry plugs!"
Ritsuko "(matter-of-factly) There's nothing we can do at this point, Captain Katsuragi. The others are engaging the Angel. The other two Evas and their pilots are cut off."
Misato "(narrows eyes) How can you say that?!? Can't you see what's happening!?"
Ritsuko "It's only temporary. The Children themselves won't be harmed. This is a reaction between the Evas themselves."
Misato ":mad: Just what kind of monster did you copy?!"
Ritsuko "In this case, it's more like, 'What kind of monster did the Third Branch send us?'."
Misato "!!"
Ritsuko "Trust me. The Evas will burn themselves out on their own. We'll be able to recover them and correct the problem so that it never repeats itself."
Maya ":( But what about the Fourth and the Fifth?"
Aoba "I guess we'll just have to wait and see..."

Meantime, the other three Children finally arrive at their destination, a middle school on the outskirts of Musashino. Due to a convenient plot contrivance, an energy supply is already waiting for them, and their internal batteries have lasted just long enough for the them to insert the concentric outlets into the slots on their respective Evas' backs.
Once they're settled in, Shinji scopes out the surroundings.

Shinji (MONO) "Hey... This is the same middle school that I'd gone to. Well, we're allotted one Violation of the Law of Incredible Coincidence per episode. I guess this was it..."
Asuka's loud, grating voice suddenly booms on the pilot communication system.

The ground begins to rumble. The Angel approaches.

Command Room (right where we left off)

The MAGI suddenly sounds an alert.
MAGI (speakers) "Critical distraction levels detected. At the current rate of plot degradation, the structural integrity of the NGE mythos will fail in exactly two scenes, resulting in a collapse of the Space-Time Continuum."
Fuyutsuki "(sardonically) As if our audience didn't have enough faith in us as things stood. A shame, isn't it, Ikari?"
Gendo merely sits there, staring forward, facilitating the same cel for the thirtieth time -- in that uniquely Gendo sort of way.

Cut to the bridge crew.

Aoba shakes out of his daze and glances at his console.
Aoba: The Evas are intercepting the Angel!
The unnervingly erotic action on the main screen is automatically replaced with feed from a Reconnaisance Helicopter present at the Musashino site. Misato spins around to look, anxiety gripping her face.
Misato (MONO) "This is all too much..."
Aoba "Sensors picking up readings... Blood type pattern... chloroplast?
Misato "'Chloroplast'?!?"
Hyuga "Don't you mean, 'green'?"
Maya "'Green'? Why would an Angel be 'green'?!"
Aoba coasts away from his console.
Aoba "That's the MAGI's determination. See for yourself."
They all gather around the console and lean over to look. Ritsuko enters some commands in again. Her brow tightens.
Ritsuko "The readings are correct."
Hyuga "What does it mean?"
Ritsuko "An unusual phenomenon is occuring in Musashino."

Misato "What the hell is going on? Ritsuko! Do you know?"
Ritsuko straightens up and glances at Misato from the corner of her eyes.

Ritsuko "(in the gravest voice possible) ... A Crossover Phenomenon."

Cut back to the top of the Command Tower.

Fuyutsuki "(calmly) But if the plot is destroyed, so is the future of all humanity. (laughs) I suppose I am doomed to never have any fun in life, after all."
Gendo "Fuyutsuki. You were a professor at a major university."
Fuyutsuki (raises eyebrow) "...so?"
Gendo "You had plenty of opportunities."
Fuyutsuki (brow furrows) "Are you implying something?"
Gendo "I don't need to imply. You know precisely what I am referring to. And so does the audience."
Fuyutsuki glances away, frowning slightly.
Fuyutsuki "Some of them may not be so astute."
Gendo "This is true."
Fuyutsuki "But it was a conscious decision. A righteous man keeps his hands to himself unless asked to share them. If he is destined to get the Nookie, the Nookie will get him. It is unfortunate that you have never learned these important principles of a pure and virtuous existence, Ikari."
Ikari "Fuyutsuki. Before my wife became immensely huge and somewhat off-limits, you would not believe how many times--"
Fuyutsuki cuts him off as quickly as humanly possible.
Fuyutsuki "(harshly) Ikari! Look at the man you've become!!"
Gendo "...... (calmly) It is somewhat out of character for me to talk like this, Fuyutsuki, but... 'Blow off'."
Fuyutsuki stares in shock for a moment, then gives Gendo the Look of Death.
Gendo is looking away the entire time. In that typically Gendo sort of way.
Fuyutsuki slowly turns away. All is silent for a moment.
Fuyutsuki "You really are still a bastard."
Gendo "Of course. My fangirls wouldn't love me if I wasn't."
Fuyutsuki "(sighs heavily) I can already feel my form deteriorating from this utter lack of story cohesion. Let's return to the plot. What little is left of it, anyway."
He pulls out a little pocket script and flips through it. Gendo remains completely motionless, as always.
Fuyutsuki "You have the next line, Ikari. 'We may still make--'"
Gendo cuts him off immediately. As always -- at least, at this point in the show -- his command over the situation is absolute. A natural, to the last.
Gendo "We may still make a sacrifice in order to remain witness to this incredible event, undistracted. Fuyutsuki. We have been handed a perfect opportunity to rid ourselves of the Ultimate One-Episode Plot Contrivance once and for all."
Fuyutsuki "(!) Ikari! Seele would not approve! This is far too early in the series to be introducing these kinds of excruciatingly enigmatic story elements!"
Gendo "Nonetheless, this is for the good of humanity's future. If we do not exhaust its battery now, Seele will be able to use it later in case their plans fail. This is a sin that must be committed sooner or later. The utilization of the ultimate failsafe device, capable of manipulating time itself. Whether it will be for our greater good or our ultimate destruction is in our hands."
Fuyutsuki "(grumbling) The greater good? The catastrophic scale of the plot contrivance this will cause will be the demon that destroys us all. No... It will surely result in Third Impact itself!"
His words flow off Gendo like water from a well-preened waterfowl. Gendo opens up his desk drawer and pulls out an unusual object -- long, slender, alien yet strangely familiar at the same time -- covered in twenty-nine buttons, each with a strange symbol upon it... suspiciously like those in the final cut of the OP.
Fuyutsuki glances down at it.
Fuyutsuki "(dramatically) The Remote of Turin..."
Gendo "Actually, I think Seele hand-picked some other name from their ridiculous religion for it. But it's hard to remember them all."
Fuyutsuki "(chuckles) This is coming from a man who has the Sephirotic Tree of Life on the ceiling of his office. You are a shameless toad-eater, Ikari."
Gendo neither looks at him nor raises his tone of voice.
Gendo "Thank you, Fuyutsuki-kyouju."
Gendo points the glorified remote controller in the opposing direction. Giant, scrolling, horizontal white bars appear beyond the two men, with static interspersed throughout. Outside of the temporal vacuum that exists atop the Command Tower, time flows backwards.
Fuyutsuki "This episode will surely end up in the Vault. This is just too embarassing, even for Gainax."
Gendo "Indeed. But our enjoyment of this spectacle is more important."
Eventually they reach the point where the first three Children encounter the "Angel". Gendo hits the symbol equivalent to "Play".


NOTE: -Kyouju is just "Professor". Like, a Prof. Professor. It was Fuyutsuki's title at Kyoto Uni.

Gendo considers this for a moment.
Gendo "...... Oh yeah."

A huge, impish grin spreads across Fuyutsuki's face and he starts to chuckle. But, within mere moments, he can no longer contain himself. Fifteen years of repression burst out in one crazed, abominably maniacal laugh.

It resounds throughout the entire Command Center for virtually two minutes straight. All eyes turn up upon him in absolute horror -- except for Maya's, because she has her face buried in her palms instead.
When Fuyutsuki is finally finished, he pants heavily in cathartic bliss, his back slouched, palms on his knees. The entire Command Center is perfectly silent.
Well, save for various kids screaming in Japanese, Evas roaring in fervent passion, and other random noise of no coincidence whatsoever blaring over the loudspeakers.
Gendo stares coldly at his Vice-Commander from the corners of his eyes and abruptly presses the pause button before anyone can respond.

Gendo "You know, Fuyutsuki, it's a good thing that you're Yui's closest Platonic friend."
Fuyutsuki ":D"
Gendo "But, despite the fact that I secretly relish this opportunity to explore our quirky and loveable character dynamics in excruciatingly gratuitous detail, I believe that certain perversions were promised of this rather shameless fanfic excursion."
Fuyutsuki straightens up, brushes himself off, and clears his throat.
Fuyutsuki "Quite right. But it's about time for Installment Seven to end, isn't it? Weren't we supposed to have fulfilled them by now?"
Gendo "This is not a problem. It is rumored that the God spoken of in the Secret Dead Sea Scrolls, Anno-sama, will utilize the Divine Art of Ret-Conning as our story draws to a close."
Fuyutsuki "(scoffs) What nonsense."
Gendo "Indeed. Regardless, we might as well take advantage of our cynical audience's expectations and do a little Ret-Conning of our own."
Fuyutsuki "You don't mean--!"
Gendo "Yes. We shall initiate a Ret-Con through sheer power of will. Yui taught me about the strength of the human heart -- even though I am a miserable wretch without her here holding my hand. And, no, don't you dare."
Fuyutsuki "(snickers) Homophobe."
Gendo ignores him.
Gendo "Clear your mind, Fuyutsuki, and release the barriers of your heart. Let us engage in shameless and indiscriminate Ret-Conning. One, two..."

Sound effects are パタ (PA-TA) and ドカ (DO-KA); Rei's speech is ああ! (a-a!). Katakana and hiragana syllables, respectively (and hence tractable as a learning task), rather than kanji.

It was interpreting the sound-effects in manga that started me off on the learning the syllabaries...
