View Full Version : How many vols are too much for you to collect a series?

I'm new to collecting manga, and I didnt know just how many vols a series can have. Some up into the twentys. Is there a point that you will stop collecting a series or never start based on how many GN it will be?

If a series is already in up to 20+, I would seriously consider not to buy it, unless it is very good and no dragging. The idea of buying the whole lot at once scared me. Otherwise, if I already started collecting a series, I'll finish it no matter how long it's going to be... The longest one I've ever collected is 33 volumes. Most of the series I have are between 15 to 25 volumes.

I think 20 volumes in too much for a manga series.((((>.<))))

Usually anything over 12-15 is too much for me. I like short series. My one exception is X. :crush:

There are some long series that are really worth collecting, like JoJo Bizzare Adventure and Hajime no Ippo, but most of my favorite mangas range between 20-30 volumes.

If the series is really good sometimes 20 volumes is not enough....It also depends on how the plot is going, if the story starts to drag on the same thing it is best to stop it before wasting anymore money.

Like I''s, I love this manga to death but I don't see reaching more than 15-20 volumes. Masakazu Katsura did the right thing when he finished on the 15th volume (same for VGA).

It all depends on the mangaka creativity and how long he can last.

No series is too long for me! The Guyver is 21 volumes and going strong! ^_^ I plan on buying 3x3 Eyes monthly (1 GN per month) from Dark Horse at $10 a pop. (40 volumes long -o-;)

I say this even though it totally kills my checking account. :dead: Blah, but as long as the manga is kewl I will buy it. :)

The reason 20+ daunts me isn't because it might create a hole in my checking account, but rather it makes me wonder if the quality of the story is compromised. Hana Yori Dango will be 36 volumes by the time the final tankoubon is published and while I was very satisfied with the ending, I really felt it needed to end much sooner. There were many parts that were mediocre at best. Same can be said, in my opinion, of Hanazakari no Kimitachi e. As much as I love it, I hope Nakajo-sensei ends it soon, because if it doesn't I'm going to be unhappy-love of a series doesn't mean I never want it to end. I'd rather something end in 12 volumes and be wonderful, than 22 volumes and have a less than stellar conclusion. If I'm going to put a lot of money into something, I want it to maitain quality through the very last chapter.

If I like or am interested in a series there is no such thing as too long. The longest series I currently own is Kenshin(28), but I'm reading some series that are in the 30s and still ongoing (though I just own a few volumes of them at the moment). Heh of course 18+ is rather daunting (30+ gets kind of scary ^^;;)...but it won't stop me from collecting and reading a series I love.

I hardly ever buy a series over 10 volumes, unless it's a continuing series that keeps my interest.

The only exception to that is Shonen Jump, but I don't buy the graphic novels, just the magazine.

It's a matter of my taste, really-- I buy almost entirely shoujo series, which have a tendency to be shorter. Basara might break that streak though.

20+ scares me... But it doesn't stop me ^_^

I collect: Inuyasha (34+), Urusei Yatsura (34), Please Save My Earth (21), Hana Yori Dango (35), Rurouni Kenshin (29?), Ranma 1/2 (38)...

Close runners up are: Mars (15), Sailormoon (18), Fushigi Yuugi (18)...

The rest are shorter: Cardcaptor Sakura (12), Ayashi no Ceres (12), Love Hina (13), Chobits (8), Alice 19th (7), Tokyo Mew Mew (10+), Maison Ikkoku (?), Saikano (7), Azumanga daioh (4), Fullmoon wo Sagashite (4+)... etc etc.

It depends... I like to Collect GTO... I have most of it.

I now want to start collecting Hajime no Ippo... and it's almost 70 tankobon long...

If you're a fan and enjoy it, it shouldn't matter how much money you spend.

The only serie I got that was finish after I started is Saint Seiya at 28 volumes. When I like a serie I keep buying the volumes. I usually start a series when it begins coming out around here or when there is a few volumes out already (so I can buy the first two and get a better feel of the serie... I might do that for Bleach ).

I only stop serie I get bored of.

Though I'm thinking I'll be giving up PSME, skipping a good amount of RK (only really interested in the later arcs), and I wonder about Hana Yori Dango....

No volume is too large. Do what a lot of people that go into the bookstores do...

Pick up a manga, read the first chaper or two, and see if you like the plot and where the story is going. If you like it, then start buying the series. That's what I did with my Inuyasha mangas. So far I have all of them up to volume 9, which is currently out at the bookstore that has the most manga in stock (at a good price...).

I think manga with a ton of volumes are evil.
You buy the first volume, you love it, you NEED to know the end, now you just have to get through 20+ volumes to get there. -_-
Not that all of them are like that, but still, I'm going to need another bookshelf soon :P
Sometimes it's the opposite effect though. If a series is taking too long to get to where it's supposed to go I just give up. But the story has to do with that, not how many volumes are in it.

It depends. I typically like a manga to be 7-8 volumes, but that's impossible for a shounen. If I really want to read it, I'll allow it to go into the 20's. If it gets to be ridiculous like Inuyasha, I'll only buy it if I can't find anything else of a series I'm already collecting.

I don't care how long a manga series is. If I like it, I'll collect the whole series. If I start to lose interest in it or if the series doesn't look like something that would become one of my favorites, then I would just not buy many volumes until I know whether I like it or not.

personally, anything over 15 volumes is too much. as someone without an actual income, the thought of spending $200+ on a comic that may take years to actually complete (if ever) is a waste. so i just prefer to watch the anime for the basic story and continue where it left with the manga, which i've done with GTO and Kare Kano. i know i'm missing some potentially good stuff not included in the anime but i just want a conclusion. i'd really like to read Lone Wolf & Cub and the like, i loved the movies.

The longest series I have now is Rurouni Kenshin (28 vol) although only 11 are released in England. The most I've ever bought together was Fushigi Yugi, I bought the first two then all of them up to 13, I waited for all the rest to come out before buying the second part. .... I need more shelves. -_-; To me I think no number would be too much If I like the series, but then I've always had more money than sense. (Even when I have no money :naughty:)

As long as the story (and art) continue to entertain me, I don't care how long a series runs. For example, Hajime no Ippo is up to 76 or 77 volumes (in Japan) right now. The story is still great, and the art is better than ever. If that were to ever get licensed, I would most certainly buy it beginning to end. Most of the licensed titles I am buying now are 20-30+ volumes (and ongoing in Japan), and I have no problem buying them at all because of length. While the amount of space they take up in my current living conditions is quite a bit, for now I just box up the titles I've read or are already completed and I just have the ongoing titles on my shelves.

It doesn't matter to me as long as its not short enough were the story feels crammed, or long enough where it becomes repetitive. I like it just where it starts and ends perfectly. This can vary from series to series. For example, I liked Chobits just where it was at 8 volumes, while Fushigi Yuugi ended great at 16 volumes.

I agree with most of the people here. As long as the series is good, I'm willing to shell out hundreds for it. The longest running series I'm collecting is Please Save My Earth at 19 volumes (gonna get Vol. 20 soon), the second largest is Whistle at 13 volumes. And I'm planning to buy Kare Kano from the last volume (since I already read 1-20 already).

But it does suck when you fall out of a long series. I collected Fruits Basket in Japanese up to 12 before I wasn't so into it anymore. I was thinking of finishing the series at one point until I found out the complete mess the series has become. Now I'm trying to sell it off to a Japanese bookstore because I need to make room for series I want to collect.

I think over 10 volumes is too much. A lot of manga by then starts to drag. Sometimes I read the first couple then the last couple if it's a long series.

I'd say anything well above 20 volumes is most likely too long. I own every single volume of Fruits Basket (except for volume 22... silly me thought I already owned it when I went to Kinokuniya to buy the final volume), which is probably the longest series I have at the moment, Bleach aside, since I didn't start buying the tankoubon for that series until volume 16 or 17.

I own quite a few series that extend past 10 volumes, but I highly doubt I'd start collecting a series that seems to be getting stretched longer for the sake of getting stretched longer (*cough*Parfait Tic*cough*). Too much of a good thing can be a bad thing... (unless it's still a good thing.) ^^;

Depends most on how far along the series is when I notice it. If I can buy it as it comes out, I generally don't care how many volumes it has. If a series has a head-start of more than 5-10 volumes, then I'm much more hesitant to start it, also no matter how many volumes in total.

I've got a couple of long series here: Dragon Ball with 42, 3x3 Eyes with 40 and Ranma 1/2 with 37 volumes. I bought another 40+ volumes series, Karakuri Circus, but that was cancelled at 21. And I will definitely buy Hajime no Ippo (starting next month in France (http://www.kurokawa.fr/a_paraitre/ippo_t1/)), even though it just reached volume 80 in Japan.

If after I buy them and they are interesting enough, I don't care how long it is. However, If the manga is already out to the point that it's 30. vol or so, I'd not buying it because I'm afraid it will out of print before I can finish it.

Unless I have enough money, know a place that will always have that manga in stock in the store or know that the publisher is reprint it again for its 2nd edition or so.

It seems that most of the series I collect are around 10 volumes in length, which is enough to tidily and satisfyingly wrap up a story. I am usually disheartened by long running series like Bleach or Getbackers, partly because of the money issue but mainly because they become episodic and/or drawn out, and then it's reaaally not worth the money if I'm not enjoying it. I was really liking Angel Sanctuary, which is a lengthy series for me, but I've stopped at about 14 because I can't take any more characters and additions to an already complex storyline that only resolves parts of itself by killing characters. Maybe I'll start back up, but only when I'm feeling particularly patient. So I would say that 10-15 is perfect, and anything over 20 is a little excessive.

lunarvesperia
August 25th, 2007, 01:08 PM
I agree with Magdalena from the length from the volumes, not the manga that prefers so much:) After 20 volumes costs too much, and for someone like me that need to buy all from web in another country. This doesnt mean that if there is a continious manga from befor i wont collect all of it. I find anything that's longer than 30 volumes to be a little intimidating to collect, mainly because I think of how large a dent that's going to put in my bank account. But if a series is really good and worth owning those 30+ volumes, then I will probably be willing to dish out the cash. But so far, none of the series I've collected have been over 30 volumes. (The most has been 28 volumes, and that was Rurouni Kenshin.)

If a manga is incredibly long, I worry that it's just made up as the creator goes along, rather than having a start, middle, and end of the story before he started. My longest manga so far is a Negima, which is at 14 in the US. Some other series like Ikki Tousen (Battle Vixens) will be pretty long since it's still being published in montly publications.

If a series interests me, I don't care whether it's 4 volumes long or 40 volumes long. Although I think 40 is starting to strech it, especially when there's already like 20+ volumes out in english.

Meh.I know what i said in the past about series above 15 volumes...but usually i pick really long series to collect. With some exceptions.

examples: (Maison Ikkoku 15 volumes,Ranma 1/2 38 volumes-lol,NANA 18 volumes out for now,Fushigi Yuugi 18 volumes,Fruits Basket 23 volumes,etc etc)

If you go over 30 is when it is just like c'mon for me. Even the mangaka has to be slightly bored of it after that long I would imagine. I like my series I collect to be around 10-15 vols.

I did say earlier that I only like a few in a series but with Boys over Flowers I will go up to..what is it..36 volumes it's going to? I guess it just depends on the series, but it has to be a great series for me to go that far.

If I like the series enough, my volume limit is much higher. For example, I still read Inuyasha even though I know it's going to go through at least 50 volumes before it's done. I'm still collecting Kaze Hikaru even though Viz is behind with the release and it's going to exceed at least 20 volumes (if it hasn't already, I'm not sure).

If I'm just getting into it or I don't care too much for it (but read it because it's something to read and passably OK), 8 or 10 is my limit. For example, if I found out that Mamotte Lollipop was over that, I would probably stop, because I don't consider it worth all the money that would need to be invested.
