Yaoi & Yuri FAQ
Originally by Yakumae
Bear in mind that these definitions are the ones that are adopted by a large majority of the American audience that enjoy yaoi and yuri, but is not necessarily indicative of the current usage or terms used in Japanese society.
* What is Yaoi/Yuri/Shounen-ai/Shoujo-ai?
Yaoi and Yuri are the terms used to describe stories, anime or manga, that involve members of the same sex together in sexual or romantic situations. Yaoi refers to men with men. Yuri refers to women with women. Yaoi and yuri can refer to a commercial, small press, or manga or anime done by fans. Small press manga, which can include fan done items is manga without ISBN numbers. This is also called doujinshi, but a doujinshi doesn't have to be yaoi or yuri.
Shounen-ai and shoujo-ai are terms that refer to manga that centers on the idea of boy-love (shounen-ai) and girl-love (shoujo-ai). They usually focus more on the idea of love and romance than sex.
* What Does Seme/Uke Mean?
Seme and Uke are the terms that are used to refer to the dominant person in a relationship. If the person is dominant, than s/he is the Seme. If s/he is submissive than they are the Uke.
* Where can I find a List of Yaoi/Yuri Anime?
This site (http://www.aestheticism.net/visitors/reference/videolist.htm) gives a list of some yaoi/yuri anime, it's availability, and a small summary of the plot.
* If You Like Yaoi/Yuri, are you Gay? If *I* Like Yaoi/Yuri, does it Make Me Gay?
Not necessarily. Yaoi was originally written for a straight female audience, and most of the fans are heterosexual women. Liking yaoi or yuri doesn't make you gay either. Anyone who likes stories about romance against all odds (and sometimes just for the fun of it) can like yaoi or yuri.
I have no doubt that the moderators are watching this forum rather closely. I'd advise to err on the side of caution with any pics you may want to post.
* What if I Don't Like what You Have to Say, and Think You are Weird and WRONG!?
Here in this forum we like to keep an open mind. If you don't agree with our lifestyle or what we chose to enjoy, you are entitled to your opinion, but please, don't tell us we are wrong. Just as you are not wrong in your opinions, neither are we. No one is wrong here. So respect us, and we will respect you.

The words "semeru" and "ukeru" (the derivitave words for seme and uke) mean "to invade" and "to recieve" respectively. Therefore, the penetrator is the seme, and the one penetrated, the uke. Despite who is actully giving and recieving seme and uke are used as well in fandom to refer to who is dominant and who is submissive. The seme being dominant and the uke being submissive. Perhaps this is because it is harder to identify the seme and uke in yuri if you were to go by the strictest definition.
