View Full Version : What's with Fluffy?

Fluffy. Shussy. Sesshomaru-sama. Would someone please explain the fascination with this character?

Here is the way I see it ( I haven't seen all of the series). Sesshomaru hates humans, enjoys killing them, and can be bloodythirsty. He uses people. So why do people insist in doing fanart with him and a bunch of fangirls? You read all this fanfiction about how is all missundestood, and that he is really a loveable person. From the way I see him, Sesshomaru would rather kill a person than accept a hug from them. I simply don't see people's fascination with this guy. Pleas explain ( and don't say it's because he's all cute and hugable).-_-;

I'm not too big of a Sess fan, but I can see how he'd be... intriguing.

It's mainly because of Rin. Sess never becomes an outwardly lovable person, but for all that he says he despises humans, there has to be a reason he would take in a little human orphan girl. He even goes out of his way and risks his life to protect her. When he interacts with her, there's this growing sense that he's not quite the cold-hearted monster he's introduced as. Perhaps she's having some effect on him the way Kagome's having on Inuyasha.

That, and there have been plenty of opportunities for him to kill Inuyasha, and yet he never quite goes all the way. He gives reasons as to why he won't, but after a while they begin to seem more like excuses.

One other clue about a possible hidden personality is the fact that both Tessaiga and Tenseiga would be impossible for a truly cold-hearted individual to use, and yet he's used both.

Altogether, he's a very mysterious character.

Sesshoumaru isn't exactly a kind-hearted youkai who is looking to go out of his way to help people, but he's not someone who just walks around and kills people just for the fun of it. Basically, he will only kill if there's purpose behind it( i.e. to acquire an item) or if someone attacks him. Perhaps I just had a massive brain fart, but I do not recall any scene where he just arbitrarily went up to someone and killed him/her for no reason at all.

BTW, I think Sesshoumaru has quite the sense of humor. Look at all the stuff he does to Jakken. There's this one hilarious scene where Jakken was sliced in half(and basically killed) by Kaijinbou and Sesshoumaru used Tenseiga to revive him. After doing so, Sesshoumaru said to Jakken(who was still in two peices), "Jakken, pull yourself together." :goof:

Sesshy does show us how nice he is... I mean, he took care of Rin and revived her after Kouga's wolves devoured her. And he allowed her to follow him around.
Also, when Inuyasha turned youkai the second time, Sesshy didn't kill him... yeah, he said that he didnt because he wanted to fight him when IY knew himself or whatever... to me, that shows that he has some mercy :D

BTW- If you don't like Sesshoumaru much... this is for you... (http://web.utk.edu/~bborchar/ots.html)

Well...the first thing we see him do was rip that guy's head off, and *then* ask for the boat.

People like him because he's too cool to hate. Besides, you gotta love that 'swoon' look, or so I've heard.

Well, I'm a Sesshomaru fan. Maybe I can try to explain.

Most girls like him because he's cute.
Most like him because he's cool.
Well, he does show mercy to some as the episodes gets deeper.
He saves Rin, a human girl who was about to die. He had revived her before her soul was taken by these little evil gremlins.
Dont some youkai kill for fun too, well it's just in his blood you know. Hope it explains a little^^He also shows mercy upon Inuyasha on episode 40-60 somewhere around there

I've only really started getting into Inuyasha...and very pleased so far with what I've seen. Truly a great series.

But for those of you who know me, you know me as a Kenshin fan 1st and foremost.

For those who have seen both RK and IY...does Sesshomaru remind you a bit of Aoshi...both the way his face is drawn and his personality?

I can see how people are fascinated by him. As said earlier, he is a very mysterious character; he shows compassiona nd mercy when we thought he was heartless. He is very mysterious and people just want to figure him out; to solve the mystery puzzle.

I like him because he's an awesome character; looks and personality. :crush:

Can't say I see any similarity. Aoshi's very quiet and has slanted eyes, whereas Inu's a loudmouth and has rounded eyes.

Sesshoumaru's aweseom because he's so cool and powerful.

I was comparing Aoshi and Sesshomaru..not Inuyasha ;)

Both have that generally cold, expressionless face and an obsession (for at least a while) with the destruction of one single opponent.

I don't really know why people like him either. I hate all the characters that were made to be super-powerful. I also don't like his personality. He's too boring. He wears the same facial expression all the time. He does have his cute moments, but that's pretty much all he has.

I don't know about other people, but the few things I can think of:

1.) His apperance. He's very bishy. That tends to draw some people in.

2.) He's evil. Face it, some people like the baddies. I tend to like them myself as much as I do the good guys.

3.) He's got issues. The guy's of the royal blood, noble heritage, and he's got the ego to prove it, yet he basically has nothing. His inheritance was stripped from him by Inuyasha. His father has symbolically snubbed him. He has every right and reason to be angry, but he decides to direct it at the wrong person nor does he ever bother to try and figure out why his father made the decision.

4.) His relationship with Inuyasha. It evolves throughout the series. It begins as plain hate - he wants Inuyasha dead so he claim the power he feels is owed to him. He wants Inuyasha to suffer for the humiliation he's had to put up with and generally does his best to make his life miserable.

But then, things change. He starts to see something...not quite sure what, but he shows mercy where he shouldn't. He still disdains him immensely, finds his very existence offensive...yet he can't bring himself/doesn't plan to kill Inuyasha anytime soon. He's had plenty of oppurtunities but chooses to hold back. This entails a number of things, the chief ideas that are usually expressed being that Sesshomaru:

a.) is slowly losing his hatred of Inuyasha
b.) is troubled by his father's choice and can't kill Inuyasha out of respect for him.
c.) thinks it too lowly to kill an enemy so pathetic and easy and wishes to wait until Inuyasha's stronger.

Whatever the change, it's there. Things do progress throughout the series, and it's interesting.

4.) Rin. She's a big one. Her timing is what sets her importance, I think. The fact that initially Sesshomaru tried to kill Kagome just for her prescence yet now takes a little girl in under his care shows a rather profound change in his attitude regarding those around him. He even goes as far as saving his servant's life later on. Given that Rin appears after Sesshomaru has had a significant amount of contact with his brother, I think it's fair to assume that his experiences with Inuyasha and the resulting encounters with Naraku, Kagome, and others have changed him to degree.

Otherwise, his calm, brooding personality tends to appeal as well...and that's about all I can think of. Sesshomaru is the last character I'd call moral, good, or even attractive, but I have to admit I find him pretty interesting.

Sesshoumaru simply overpowers the presence of any other character when he's around. He's probably the most powerful character in the series with an aloof, confident demeanor to match. The fact that he saved Rin's life and allows her to follow him around adds to the mystery of his character. He's what I like to call a free radical, a character that follows his own set of rules and doesn't let anything stand in his way. (As a side note, I also classify Kikyou as a free radical.) We never know exactly what he will do next and that's part of what makes his appearances so exciting.

Its for all the above reasons everyone mentioned. He is very intriging, every aspect. I even prefer his slightly more vicious self in the manga. That's how much I love him. Plus...he's hot (http://img114.exs.cx/img114/4995/sessX.jpg) as (http://img23.exs.cx/img23/2811/sessY.jpg) hell (http://img132.exs.cx/img132/246/sessW.jpg)!

One could argue that people like Sesshoumaru because he is a badarse anti-hero type of guy. Others would argue that people (especially females) like Sesshoumaru because he is a bishounen. Others would say that he is just too cool to hate.

I say he is a mysterious character, and the mysterious characters tend to be really interesting characters.

I'm a HUGE Sesshoumaru fan, myself. And... whoever said that Sess and Inu were freinds in the past, that's not true. Sesshoumaru was a grown man when InuYasha was born. So, that's not at all possible. Here are the reasons that I heart Sesshoumaru:

1: outright, he's HOT. (already been said, but can't say it enough)
2: Rin (self-explanitory)
3: He does have feelings for his brother in there somewhere. He saved him in the third movie (Swords of an Honorable Ruler) when his father's third sword, Sounga, tries to hit InuYasha with a blast of energy. He pushes him aside and takes the hit himself; Tenseiga saves him, I think.
4: His voice (in the english version) is just SO frickin' HOTT.
5: He really does care about Jaken... even though he's an annoying little suck-up pest who won't shut up when he REALLY needs to. (also in the third movie)
6: Since he doesn't do it often, when he smiles, omgomgomgomgomg... *tingly*
7: He's the deep, quiet type... *tinglier*
8: His gorgeous eyes... make-up and all.
9: He's so strong.
10: He is WAY better at insults than InuYasha.
11: His clothes. He looks so HOTT in white.
12: He has one arm, but he fights like he's got two.
13: He's smart. Well, duh.

The list goes on and on...

After doing so, Sesshoumaru said to Jakken(who was still in two peices), "Jakken, pull yourself together." :goof:

I remember this one scene where Rin was trying to help a wounded Kagura out of a river and Jaken went in after her to keep her from getting washed away. Sesshomaru didn't do anything. Sure enough, Rin, Jaken, and Kagura got swept away by the river and Sesshomaru is there like "...". That "..." couldn't have come at a better time. "I must've missed something. Why are my two minions floating down river?" Of course, scenes later, they are on land getting tried, meaning Sesshomaru did help them out. But it surprises me how such a brooding character could actually be funny.

Otherwhys, this has been a big theme on my posts about the character Kikyo, but I like him because of the way his characters is constantly changing in the story, in subtle yet definite ways.

I still wonder though, why fangirls like to call him "Fluffy". I understand the whole puffed up thing he carries around on his shoulder (which peopple claim to be a tail. But it is still kind of weird). And I hardly think "Fluffy" when I think Sesshomaru.

Not to mention Jaken is sporting a huge bump on his head from being smacked... *grin*

I started to like Sesshoumaru for one simple reason. Ken Narita. Not because I was a Ken Narita fan before, but because there was some parodies he made of Sesshoumaru that put the badass dog youkai in a whole new light and just made me go, "OMG, Sesshoumaru IS prime mocking material!!" And the higher the mockery-value of a character, the more Kuro likes.

...or is it the other way around? "The more Kuro likes, the higher the mockery value" ...?

Eh, either way....

This thread made me remember a question that I heard on some show.

"What makes some women look at a complete scumbag, and say, 'I see potential there?'" I often ask myself that, and I've come to a conclusion.

It's the Bad-Boy Syndrome. Found in 83% of the heterosexual female population, it's a primitive urge which forces otherwise clear-headed women/girls to become physically attracted to the most vile and crude (though undeniably good-looking) men on the planet.

Although, the little fan-girls and yaoi fan-girls are annoying. I think they like Sesshomaru for something he isn't. He's either the tool for some BL story, or comething cute. Sesshomaru is not cute. He's gorgeious not cute. He strongly dislikes stuff like Sunshine, and butterflies, and rainbows, and good will towards Mankind. Still, there are some entertaining Sesshomaru BL pics out there. :P And, I wouldn't mind a well-written fanfic. Hmm, I think that's a contradiction, whatever.

Um, for me, it's probably the Bad-Boy Syndrome, and his relationship with Rin. There's something sweet about a guy with a kid. It's makes a girl go "Awe, how pwecious." Until she remembers that she hates children, the evil little....

the start out reasoni thaught he kept Rin around was so that he could learn to like humans so he could weild the Tetsuaiga. but i think she is haveing an unplanned effect on him.

Actually... originally, Sesshoumaru revived Rin because he felt her owed her a debt of honour - when he was hurt, she tried to look after him, so he owed her the same. Also hence the 'do as you like'.

As a noble, Sesshoumaru's "do as you like" is pretty much a free reign to really do as you like. He gave Rin permission to end the world. It's kinda scary if you think about it that way.

He has no desire to "learn to like humans".

For me... Sesshoumaru is hot, and Sesshoumaru is powerful. Mostly I like him because of his relationship with Kagura.

Mikadzuki Tatsu

Sesshoumaru has no desire to learn to like anyone, much less humans. He was never really interested in learning how to wield Tenseiga, because, as far as he was concerned, it was a useless sword. (Why else do you think he coveted Tetsusaiga?) The fact that he likes Rin is not a result of his own efforts, but just because it's near impossible NOT to like Rin. :)

I've always wondered what Sesshoumaru's reaction would be if someone walked up to him and called him "Fluffy-sama." Back in the beginning of the series, that someone would have been asking for a one-way ticket to the land of the dead, but Sesshoumaru has changed quite a bit since he was first introduced 400-some chapters ago; his reaction might not be the same.

I also wonder what Sesshoumaru's reaction would be if many people walked up to him and called him "Fluffy-sama," and those many people were the manifestations of rabid fangirls armed with weapons forged from their love for him. That could be interesting... :shifty:

Hm. Arlo Guthrie moment, I think.

And the only reason I'm singing you this song now is cause
you may know somebody in a similarsituation, or you may be
in a similar situation, and if your in a situation like that
there's only one thing you can do and that's walk into the shrink,
wherever you are ,just walk in say "Shrink, You can get
anything you want, at Alice's restaurant.". And walk out.
You know, if one person, just one person does it they may
think he's really sick and they won't take him. And if two people,
two people do it, in harmony, they may think they're both ******s
and they won't take either of them.
And three people do it, three, can you imagine,
three people walking in singin a bar of Alice's Restaurant
and walking out. They may think it's an organization. And can you,
can you imagine fifty people a day, I said fifty people a day
walking in singin a bar of Alice's Restaurant and walking out.
And friends they may thinks it's a movement.

Which it is.

All of you Sesshoumaru fans really need to start reading the manga. The anime ended well before it had a chance to do his character justice. He has developed quite over the past 100 chapters, particularly in the more recent chapters. There are a few chapters that focus solely on him, and we learn something very interesting and important about him. ^_^

You know, you can always buy manga online. Even if there is no major bookstore in your area, Barnes & Noble and Borders do have websites, and they do sell manga. AnimeNation also sells manga. Check out all the lovely InuYasha tankouban (http://www.animenation.com/books-domestic-manga-inu-yasha.html). There are many other online retailers, as well.

(Besides, the particular spoilers I have in mind won't be appearing in the U.S. release of the manga for another 10 or 20 volumes or so, at least.)

Online shopping is pretty safe as long as you order from reliable, trustworthy sources - i.e., an online retailer like AnimeNation or the online store of a major retailer like Barnes & Noble. As long as you stick to sites you can trust, you should be fine. (You just need a credit card or a PayPal account.)
