You know... katanas really aren't that heavy. There are alot of 1 handed swords I've seen in FFXI that look much heavier than the katanas. I don't think that katanas (I do not call them "great katanas" because FFXI misslabels them. The ninja's "katana" should be called kodachi, and the samurai's just katana) should be just as heavy as a great sword. I mean seriously, compare the amount of metal a great sword has compared to a katana.

Meh, but at the same time, a typical samurai would not go in flailing his sword, he'd make slow, certain, precise cuts-- focus~.
And there are too many types of what they label as both "katana" and "great katana." I don't really mind the naming scheme, because you generally get the idea. Not all of the blades are necessarily kodachi or katana. There are kunai, ninjato, katana, tachi, uchigatana, etc represented visually. No matter what you try and label a group of weapons, there will be exceptions an inaccuracies. Hell, they may as well just label them "ninja swords" and "samurai swords."

the only main problem i have with the "ninja swords" is that they're so limited...
and most of them are pretty crappy...
>_<
right now...i'm lvl'ing war up a bit...
i love duel wielding 2 axes...

One last question: Sony sells cards for this like they do for Everquest, right? My credit card's not come in yet, so I've got to hope that they do.
Edit: Many thanks, Aelice. That actually does help quite a bit. Really. No sarcasm. It sounds like I'm going to enjoy meleeing more then in EQ.

i don't think they sell pre-paid cards yet...
but i think later on they'll add them...
i think you can get one of those visa gift cards or whatever...
and that works...

Seeing as how I'll be starting soon, any basic tips for a thief?
Seijuro_Hiko_IX
March 18th, 2004, 12:21 PM
I'm no thf expert, but from what I've heard, and from leveling thf to 15, you should not use dagger to start out with. You should get a sword and level that first because at 15 you get Sneak Attack and none of the early weapon skills for dagger work with Sneak Attack. But the first weapon skill for sword, Fast Blade, does work with it. But once you are a high enough level to learn Viper Bite with the dagger (I don't know what level exactly, Michael does, I'm sure) then you should switch to dagger and use that from then on.
I've actually been considering leveling my thf somemore, so my stats are a little higher when I farm with my Samurai. I had an extremely terrible day yesterday, and I don't feel like complaining about it anymore, so I'll leave it at that. So I wanted to do something different. I don't want to even think about high level crap right now. Whether its AF quests or level cap quests, I hate it all right now and I don't want to even think about any of it.
Michael
March 18th, 2004, 08:28 PM
Viper Bite is Lv 33 for a thief.
Aside from that... I recommend starting as a warrior. I know, it's not really what you want to do, but there's a reason I say this. You can't equip a subjob until completing the quest at Level 18. I say start with warrior because hands down the best sub for a thief is warrior. Ninja is just for kicks until you get double attack, really. Berserk is nice, but so is utsusemi if you're pulling. Anyway-- leveling war to 18 will save you trouble in the long run if you plan on staying with thief beyond 30. Figure it this way-- 1-18 sucks, but at least once it's over, you don't have to ever worry about leveling your sub until 37-38. You can take thief straight through. Also, level warrior with sword. Once you're 18 and you can equip a subjob, pick up a Lv12 Dagger. Equip it on your warrior, and run around killing easy stuff (heck, go outside of Windurst and fight Crawlers with it, gather stacks of silk thread and sell them on the Auction House for big moneys). Try to get your skill at least to 10 for your first weapon skill (Wasp Sting). Then start your life as a thf/war. Level with a sword, as Hiko said. However, when you get to Level 12 with thief, you can start using groups to practice your dagger. Spend some time in the group using your dagger and try to keep your skill with it up. This will save you the trouble of trying to grind 100 skill later when you're level 30. Dagger hits really fast, once you get started it won't take long at all to cap off at each new level. Max out your dagger as soon as possible each level, then switch back to sword. Until 18, your sword will remain capped, so you don't have to worry about that. After 18 it'll go up steadily.
Aside from that, just learn from what to steal from, and what you can get. Try to work out skillchains with your groups so that you are the last person in the chain, and you use Fast Blade. Make sure to let people know your sneak attack timer so that when you do a skillchain, you can sneak then fast blade for a ton of damage. Thief is a really good class when played correctly. Plus you'll be loved for both of your Treasure Hunter abilities. 1-33 is a long road, but as soon as you can start doing distortion skillchains with sneak+trick>viper bite, things will start to pick up.
As for myself. I spent literally 24 hours on seek without a single invite, haha. Given, I wasn't staring at my monitor the whole time, I went to sleep, ate, etc. I just left my character sitting in my mog house with seek up the whole time. Earlier today I finally did get a group, we made nearly 10,000 exp in a couple hours, which puts me just over half way through level 55. Still no The Boyahda Tree key, which is depressing. Our group started off trying the Robber Crabs there... a coffer was up, and I don't have a key there yet. >_< I need to open the coffer for my AF gauntlets. My gauntlets are level 56, I have a feeling I'm not going to have them right away. Honestly, my +3 accuracy gloves are better than my AF, but I'm still going to wear my AF at all times (sans helm in exp groups). I finally did get my first Sniper's ring, but I think I'm going to sell it after I get a bit into 56. When I bought it, I was using two +2 dex rings, as well as a spike necklace (3str3dex). I figured I may as well replace to lower dex given also the necklace has 3str on it. But afterwards I got to thinking. That ring cost me 320,000G. With that money, I could buy a Merman's Gorget, which also gives +5 accuracy (I lose 3str though), but I could also buy my Lv60 +7 accuracy Grand Knight's Lance. Honestly, it'd be nice to have that waiting for me the moment I hit 60-- giving me a total of +22-25 accuracy (depending on which gloves I'm wearing) as opposed to the +18 I have now. Also, I wouldn't have to farm the 100,000G for the lance >after< I leveled. My focus would be on farming 600,000G for two snipers, then another 200,000G for my Valkyrie's Mask. Overall putting me at +32-35 Accuracy. :D After those items comes the Spike Earrings, a set for 110,000G. Oh the money I have to farm soon. Oh well, I have four and a half levels until I have to worry about it.
Today worked our well though, three of the people I was partied with today (pld, whm, drk) all decided to form a "perma party" ie, if we're all six are on, we stick together and level. A guaranteed group. They got some of their friends in on it too, so our perma party will be pld drg drk whm rdm thf. 55-60 won't be too bad when I no longer have to seek. :D
And on a random note, if any of you guys starting with th PS2 release happen to come over to Odin by means of either world pass or rerolling your character, I'd be glad to help you out with advanced jobs and Rank 4 and 5 missions when I have time, and you get to those levels~.
[no new posts = edit]
War 30, finally, yaaaaay. Also, I ran into the Japanese Dragoon that helped me and my friends unlock the dragoon class again today. Last time I ran into him was when I was 49, and he offered to help with my AF. Of course, my AF doesn't require that much help until the helmet (or so I'm told the helmet quest sucks-- anyway), so I haven't really asked him. But apparently the other day he forked over 1,200,000G for a Colossal Lance, and retired the Grand Knight's Lance he was using... and upon seeing me today, asked me if I had it, when I said I was saving for it, he handed me his. He is the man.

That entire post was Greek. Bear in mind, I've not started. I'm sorry, I know it'll be useful, and that I'll thank you after I understand it, but some things just can't quite be explained until you've made and screwed up a few characters. (100 hours spent listening to EQ people, 10 hours spent playing before I got playing the game right.)
Michael
March 21st, 2004, 06:48 AM
Yeah, you'll understand it all once you get started, heh. I don't think I could make a decent guide for you to read before you start the game without analyzing like every feature of the game. =p
As for me~ I got my The Boyahda Tree key, opened it and killed Dark Spark last night, Drachen Finger Gauntlets: check. Started the quest for my Drachen Armet, talked to all the NPCs, got my item form the Kuftal Tunnel Coffer, talked to all the NPCs again. Now all I have to do is find help for killing the NM in Temple of Uggilapeh or whatever. Only one battle away from having all of my dragoon AF-- wooo.

As of right now, in one month I should have access to Final Fantasy XI, now, I want to start in Leviathan. I might luck out and land in it, but I want my friend to get there too. We both want to use that as our main server, so I know you must create a new character for the new server, but I don't want to be charged extra for it, seeing as how both me and my brother will be on the same account with different characters. How can I set this up?
!n|=3c+iOn
March 22nd, 2004, 10:56 AM
so you want to be on leviathan for you and your friend?
how about your brother?
during your first month you can create as many handles as you want i believe...
as long as you delete them before the end of the month...
me and my brother's share an account...
i got a world pass to ragnarok from my cousin...
and after that all my characters are made on ragnarok...
unless you want to go somewhere else...
i'm sure someone can get you a world pass to leviathan...
i'm not sure if thats what you were asking...

I finally beat the dragon for M2-3 in Sand D'oria. Now next is getting the three keys for the airhship pass so I can lv up in Kazam where all my friends are at the moment.
My fishing skill is going no where I am about to give up on fishing entirely. Spent 4 hours fishing and catched 2 crayfish..... I don't have any more patience than that.

Just a question about player names.
Is it like email addresses and message boards where if one person got that name, then no one else can have it (w/o adding numbers at the end). Like say if I wanna name my black mage Vivi, but some other guy got that name, would I have to name him something like Vivi123? (BTW thats not really what i want to name my character, thats just the first name i came up with)
Or is it just like whatever, you want the name, you got it?
Michael
March 22nd, 2004, 07:37 PM
Names can only use the 26 letters of the english alphabet, nothing else.
If someone already has the name, you're out of luck-- come up with a new one.
Hoho, I spent majority of my weekend on seek, I finally got a group today, first group in a couple of days, made a total of 2000 experience in like 3-4 hours, which is absolutely terrible. One death was included in that, even without the death, terrible overall gain. =/ After that group disbanded, I did a search of seeking players my level, 3 drk 2 drg, decided not to even bother. I started leveling monk again today for days when my perma group isn't meeting, so long as it's not an extended break (we don't do anything Friday-Monday). I'm looking at it as a possible "get rich quick" scheme. Not necessarily quick, but I plan on whoring myself out to a BCNM LS and being a BCNM40 monk. 32 now, I might even just go for 41 to play with Raging Fists. I'm really hoping the perma group thing works out though, seeking is a freaking nightmare 50-60. Either support super damage melee are severly overpopulated at the time you're seeking, or all the key classes are questing at the time you're seeking. omg, I want keys, omg I want to quest AF, omg I want to get R6, omg limit quests! >_< When I met my perma party, there was one group our level actually hunting for exp. There were enough people seeking to make three more groups, but the key rdms and brds were all doing AF quests. >_<
It really sucks that the best exp at my level are crabs or crawlers. ie, two mob types that use a defensive skill that must be dispelled. Without a dispel, it takes entirely too long to kill one pull. It's rediculous. =/

I am, Scarface is, GimpyBoy is/was (if he ever plays again), SakuraX is, Kitoshi/Seres/whatever his name is now was when he played, DRL is getting on it now too.
I tried to play again a few days ago. I sat on seek for a long time with no response, so I went farming until to many people showed up there then I went back to Bastok and sold my stuff and logged off. I haven't been back since. Now I've started to play Ragnarok Online. It's so cool, I'm killing stuff... BY MYSELF! I don't need a damn party! It's a wonderful feeling.

Might as well. Try as many servers as you can. My motto when trying an MMORPG.
Sorry to hear that, Hiko. It's hard to establish a group if you don't figure it out ahead of time. Without a permanent gaming group, you're screwed in a group type game. (I had IRL friends with EQ.)

Trade to NPC's to give them items. Select them, then open your menu and select trade. Find your item in the trade box and then hit ok.
RPGuru1331
March 23rd, 2004, 07:25 PM
Uhh, yeah DRL. That would be the point.
As to Hiko: To hear Scar tell it, he doesn't try and be social. That doesn't normally help when playing a game that essentially requires grouping. If you're not gonna try, then it was probably not a bad idea to change. Except one thing: You should have sold your account over E-Bay. It would have given you a lot of IRL cash. Or at least just given your items up to people who could use them.
Starting tomorrow. I'm the only one stupid enough to forget about that PS2 adapter. I'm trading in my old PS2 and my spare Monty Python and the Holy Grail DVD for it.

Whoa, whoa, I never said a word about quitting. Did I?
*re-reads last few posts*
Nope, I'm pretty sure I didn't. Its not odd to take breaks from MMORPG's is it? I've never played one before I got into FFXI. I'll still be playing again, I'm just not sure when.
RPGuru1331

???
But I never said I was done with my account. I just haven't played for a few days, I haven't "done" anything with anything.
But anyway, fear not. I'm not done with the game yet. Not by a long shot. I said I was taking Samurai all the way. And I'm only a little over halfway there.

I wonder if you realize just HOW long. You've played MMORPGs before, probably. I never have, FFXI was my first. So I don't know how other MMORPGs are. But it takes years and years to do ANYTHING in FFXI. And after level 12 or 13, dont expect to be able to do much of anything on your own anymore.
RPGuru1331

1) I've got a good idea. To get to where you are, it would take a few months of intensive play (Pure logic. That's how long it took you). It would take me longer, as the influx of new people would mean that until Sony/Square (Don't know who's in charge here) boosted monster/item spawn times, hunting would be harder.
2) Uh... Yeah... I'm not expecting to. That's why I'm hoping to establish a regular gaming group.....

Welcome, PS2 players.
Accomplished today:
Lv 33 Monk
Lv 56 Dragoon (woot, wearing my gloves finally)
Got my Kuftal Tunnel map, also opened three other coffers for my group. Every time we took a break for the casters, I'd have one toss a sneak on me, then go search for a coffer. I'd find one, open it, use an oil, run back and resume killing until next key drop/break. I have a fourth key, but someone else was trying to find the coffer at the same time I was, and it was close to spawn time. After about three passes I didn't see one at any of the spawns, I assume he got it. Regardless, all of my group members went home with 16,000G each. And they all love me because I'm not a greedy bastard who holds his key until the group disbands. ;p

its still remakrably difficult to find someone to join my quest to see some friggin scientist in East Sarabutara. If i can't find someone I'll just do it myself and get killed over and over again.
By the way I have a question for you: Whats the most embarrassing thing that has killed you playing the game?
For me it's a toss up between a carrion crow or a savanna rarab.
Still lvl 5 thf and thats it. but i just bought a shield so i look all cool now

Oh you mean the first mission. There's a difference between the two, quests are done as side ventures and some are repeatable. Missions on the other hand are non-repeatable and are part of the main storyline.
And most embarrassing thing I got killed by? Nothing that small, usually only get killed by aggros who jump me from behind. Example I got mugged by three Yagudo Votary last night when I attempted mission 3.1 alone and my silence ointment lost its effect. Not even my MNK 2 H could save me (although I did get two of the three bastards.)

I have a question... I'm trying to create a 2nd character on a different server. I'm beginning to think that it isn't possible. Can I do this with a world pass? It keeps throwing my 2nd character on Levaithan no matter how many times I re-create it.

There is a plot to the game, but its not as deep as most final fantasy games. It mostly has to do with completing country missions. I'm not sure if Dark Lords are the "final" monsters but they are definitely high lvl bosses that you can fight when you are high enough lvl.

Yes. :) (Not talking about the Shadow Lord.. >_>; From what high level friends have told me, there -is- a 'final' boss) Order of events? You have to do the missions in order.. but other elements of the plots found through quests or opening other jobs is optional in several cases.

Sorry, not a chance. The only reason I even tried FFXI is because its a FF game. FFXI is a huge game and I'm not going to try and bother with anymore MMORPGs while playing FFXI at the same time, and there isn't a chance in hell I'll stop playing FFXI for some other MMORPG.

I would have posted sooner but I am recovering from being badly injured lol.........
I only got to play for 2 hrs the other day but I love it.....really different.
I am Tokagero lvl 4 Hume monk on Cerebus.
I think I will change to thief though once I return. I have to say nice community so far and everyone seems cool. The two hours I spent there I got a free gift 2 min after making my character lol....got welcomed by some upper levels...even ran into some cool role players that entertained me for a bit.
There's a lot to like in this game but the two things that might give me a prob is that it's difficult...lots to learn about your character and the fact it seems you will need a good group of friends/players/perma parties to make it to higher lvls.
People were already getting mad when I logged on saying things like "It's slow" "this game sucks" or my fav "I can't be a dragoon now? This game blows!"
These are just observations from a noob...but honestly the game seems cool in my book...were I not so injured I would be playing now lol....
One thing though....Cerebus is....well quiet lol.....
And i so fear macros lol....I got the strat guide and eh I have a lot to do when I get back....figuring out how to set em may be a pain. And while I am not a role-player or ever want to be it's good to see such activities are encouraged.
Anyways I hope to see some of you somewhere sometime whenever I return next week lol.....

Given the way the game is played, and the type of game it is, there isn't a "final boss." There are grossly difficult encounters, but that's about it. There are the storyline "bosses," but the game isn't "over" when you kill them. You attain Rank 6 after killing Shadow Lord, it goes up to R10. There are also Zilart Missions. I'm sure the final R9 mission has a "boss" type encounter, but it's not like R10 is game over-- I seriously doubt he's even harder than stuff like King Behemoth. King Behemoth literally takes hours to kill from the time you engage him until the time he drops.
Also, there's the whole Chains of Promethia domain having been registered, which has sprung rumors of another expansion.
EverQuest has had seven expansions. MMORPGs are constantly expanding, and until something replaces FFXI for S-E/PlayOnline, there will never technically be a "final boss" as there is infinite potential to expand on what's already there.

BTW does anyone care to offer a bit of info as to what a nice mink like myself should be wearing from (I guess) 1-15?
Of course I should be looking for stat boosting stuff right? But I'm wondering what I should be playing as stuff on Cerebus seems rather expensive for my level lol.....I dunno if it's the economy but more than likely I think it's just me.

Stats aren't too important at lower levels. Honestly, on your first way up, you should probably try to keep things simple. Try not to take things too seriously, just get to 18 and then 30 and decide what you want to do. Stat gear is nice, but unless you spend a lot of time farming, you're not going to be wearing the best gear for your level for awhile. Just take it easy~.
As for some things to work for at around 15, get some Battle Gloves, +3 acccuracy. Accuracy is king for pure melee. Balance Rings are very expensive, but very nice. Royal Archer's Cesti at 10 would be a good buy, perhaps upgrade to Burning Cesti at 12. Beyond those, just stick to basic armor. Doublet/Brais/Gaiters will take you to at least 16, when you could either pick up Bone armor, or hold out until 21 for Beetle armor.

Thanks for the advice and the kind gesture, I appreciate it =). I'm not really one to bother people unless it's a necessity. Didn't play long yesterday as I am still injured...got about an hour and a half of playtime I think....

Also chillin' in Bastok wasn't too good either.....I was to myself checking stuff out in a manual and all I saw scoll across my screen was:
"F--- u PS2 players you suck!"
"Damn it used to be quiet in town now it sucks"
"These damn PS2 players suck.'
over and over again.....while such BS doesnt phase me I feel sorry for the nice, polite lvl 1s who where just trying to run around the city and get a feel for the game. It's one thing to be angry about changes in a game or overcrowding but that was slack....but eh what can you do I guess. I've noticed it a couple times when I used to be on Garuda, and a little bit in the short two days I've spent in Odin. It is disheartening to hear such talk, but as long as one doesn't carry on with an attitude like the example I said in my last post, it shouldn't be a problem. I just hope they don't start to generalize that all PS2 players will be the bane of their existence.

Must be nice. This game has been bent on discouraging me lately. I wasted the whole day seeking party, and I've not gotten any help with AF1 yet either. The game is very relentless at times, but at others, very rewarding. I've given up hope twice in leveling, once to the point where I completely uninstalled the game and put the box away. I came back, and have since gotten full AF. AF might sound hard, but you'll get there. Genkai1 is a pain in the ***, and will probably take a week at least, but it's worth it. You should be fearing AF3 more than AF2. Everyone's AF3 is terrible, some more than others. WHM AF3 was a nightmare. We fought it three times in a full alliance of 50-60, at least two people died each fight. The last fight five people died. My AF3 is in Temple of Uggalieph or whatever with all the tonberries, that's going to be a total nightmare, but I'll get it done.

I'm guessing your Linkshell helps you out and you help them out an such for things like AF and other hard quests, right? My LS is mostly all people who are strong enough to help me, but they are always busy. I've tried to ask a few times for help with AF1, but I rarely even get a response at all. In fact, my Linkshell has only helped me get 1 of the Kazham keys long ago, and that's it. I mean, of course they help me out with things like simple questions I have or sometimes some advice if I ask, but I mean as far as helping with quests and the like. But I don't bug them constantly because I don't want to get annoying or anything.

Well, my LS has been dead for about a month now. I went back to my old ls with real life friends full time, all like six of us in the linkshell total. VOT refused to help anyone with AF2 after the bulk of them finished their AF, it was starting really piss me off, I miss all my events and raids and fun, but I don't miss how elitist and selfish people get when they reach certain points. I'll gladly help people with their genkai, their missions, their AF, regardless of what level I maybe. If I sufficient enough to help, and have nothing else I'm already focused on, I'll be there. Lately I've been short on time during prime hours given I'm in a static PT that exps from about 5pm - 1am every weekday, but this ends at 60. I'm @7200 from 59 right now, so overall, 27200 to 60, which I plan on getting by the end of the week. :D
Anyway, I haven't found any help for AF3 yet, AF2 I had to ask a friend of mine, who has since become a total bastard and I don't want to associate with anymore. My old LS helped me get papyrus, but I had to shout in Jeuno for both of the other items. Two of your coffers for Samurai AF are in standard EXP group areas, you should consider yourself lucky. AF2 might be hard, AF3 might be hard, but you CAN find help for them asking around Jeuno and making friends your level. Seriously, like all of AF2 is doable by a half way decent exp group of 52s. Level 40s exp in Labrynth of Onzozo. You CAN do it. Pain? Maybe. Impossible ohmygodiwanttoquit? Come on. =/ I'm not sure what your AF3 is like, but your body is in Uggalepih coffer, that's going to take some work. However, it's not like you're the only class that needs the coffer, and it's Lv58, key parties are common place. 50-60 is the worst exp grind ever, because all people want to do is their AF quests and make key parties.
You can't let yourself get that discouraged. These are challenges that are worth overcoming. They're there for a reason. The game wouldn't be fun if everything was handed to you on a silver plate. It'll take time. It may be hard, but the best thing to do is dive in. There's nothing that says you have to have AF at each level. You could easily have your boots (AF2) pants (Quicksands Coffer) and Gloves (Kuftal Coffer > Dark Spark) by 56. Heck, you probably wouldn't wear your boots except for looks. DEF13 20HP 10FIR 5Evade 5Enmity, meh. Not bad, but you'll probably want the accuracy from Royal Knight's Sollerets until you can replace with other accuracy items... looking nice is good, actually hitting with a 450 delay weapon is even better.
My plans for getting my AF3 helmet? Shoutting in Jeuno. You have to fight multiple NMs for it. One of the drg I talked to said he actually brought TWO full alliances to do it. I already explained my experiences on WHM AF3 and RDM AF3. It's hard. It can be done.
Questing isn't my gripe with the game. It's the rate of finding a group. If I didn't have a static pt set up right now, I might be 56, but probably still 55 and throwing my monitor out the window. =/

My LS is also going through trouble. X_X Half the people left and formed their own LSs after a disagreement. And I love the players on both sides, and I feel guilty being forced to choose one as well. Though there are some nice people left in my LS (Dreama on Odin is a VERY kind player and helps newbies at Ghelsba yesterday after she used her THF to help me grab my key).
Still wondering if I'm going to go the path of BRD soon or stay with WHM. X_X

Things are really going downhill then. Scar contacted me last night saying the people in his shell are getting mad because of "n00bs" though I am sure I am a veteran when it comes to RPGs and only called "n00b" because I don't own FFXI yet. They kicked a bunch out for being n00bs and I was told I could get in but he didn't know about my brother or Chris my friend who is making XI playing possible for me. HAHAHAHAHAHA!!! Thats the best thing I've heard all day.
There's this idiot in Bastok on Leviathan who does nothing but sit in the Bastok Markets and shout all day. He's a level 9 WAR with no subjob, so its safe to say he's a noob. And it seems rather than level his character, he'd rather get everyone on Leviathan to Blacklist him. Funny how he pays $12 a month just to sit there and annoy people. There are many places online where you can do that for free.
In other news, Red Mage is kinda fun, I'm enjoying leveling it so far. And my Linkshell banned together long enough to help me and another Linkshell SAM get AF1 finished. I'm holding my AF Katana right now. My next obsticle is reaching level 50. As of late, getting parties has been hard for some reason. After that, I need the cap quest, and AF2. Both of those make AF1 seem like child's play. And you were right about my AF3, its the hardest one.

I've got a question myself for all the high lvl people. Which items are worth keeping from the beginner lvl monsters? I'm referring to things like, Beastman's Seal, Bat Wings, Orcish Axe, Sheep Tooth, sleepshroom etc... I've been hanging on to all of my beastman's seal, it just seems important.

turn the orcish axe into the guard everytime...
just do the first mission over...
you still get rank points for doing it...
sleepshrooms sell good at the ah...
on ragnarok they sell for a constant 2.4k a stack...
turn in bat wings to the npc in north sand...

Beastseals are very important to keep. Especially if you plan on doing BCNMs.

aha! My first update!
I ditched the monk class and made a thief. fun so far but I hear it will get rough soon.
I thought it was in my best intrest to go thief since I seem to be having quite a problem making the cash....sadly crystals that were going for 2000 before are going around 1200 now....and nobody seems to be buying my stuff. But oh well these things happen I guess.
As for my ffxi social life.....no dice. I met some dude who needed a bit of assistance since he was level 1. Otherwise nothing new out of the ordinary happened.
I am working on my weapon skills....lvl 9 dagger so far but what bugs me is that no weapons for a thief seem to be available for my price range.
So since a thief operates on a different set of stuff....how long should I be using the onion knife and my other gear? At some point should I switch weapons to do more damage since I will be soloing for quite some time or keep it up with the dagger?
I really like thief so far...fits my style a lot better!

And the discouragement continues. I've realized I shouldn't even worry about any of my other AF's, and I shouldn't worry about the level 50 cap quest. Because if I can't even get a single party, I can't ever even make it to level 50. For about 3 days in a row now I've seeked and seeked and seeked. Today I actually got a invite, and we made about 400 exp. before we decided to try and go to the Quicksand Caves from the Nest. Took us forever to get there, and by that time the WHM and the PLD had to go. So we went all that way for nothing. I spent the rest of the day looking all over the tunnel connecting the mines and the desert for the ??? to fight the 3 leeches for Ninja quest. Finaly a Ninja from my Linkshell came and helped me find them and kill them along with a few other Linkshell members. By that time it was 3:00 am and I have to work in the morning. So I logged.
I ask my Linkshell but never seem to get a response, what should I be doing differently to find a party at this level? Its been several days and I'm really starting to get frustrated that I want to level, but can't do it. I've never had this much of a problem with it before.

around that time you have to learn to be patient(even more so) and fish while you wait, or farm and level a sub, or talk with team leaders see if anyone is leaving, or man up and try to find a whm and pal and make yer own team.

You should be partying in the canyon. If you can try to get a party in the maze and fight Maze Makers. When you get to around level 15 you will be ready to party in valkurm and get your subjob.

Well.......
I finally got into a group yesterday.....after 13 levels of soloing a thief and nearly going insane I finally got a group! Sadly though a few in the group were PCers who weren't too happy with partying with PS2 noobs it seems. People died a lot lol....so much so I de-leveled :crush:
But eh it was my first group and believe it or not was my first time leaving South Gustanburg. Going to the highlands was awesome.
Sadly though I failed trying to be a player....since I couldn't get a group all before I think I was crappy yesterday.
Can anyone help me with some party tips for a thief?
And also with sword maxxed out at lvl 31 should I work on raising daggers or hand-to-hand next?
Finally I think I might escape Cerebrus.....anyone got some thoughts/ideas and a WP to Unicorn?
Thanks in advance!
Oh one more thing.....should I save conquest points? Or spend em!

Finding a group for THF before level 15 is not going to be easy. Actually, you'll need to find a group of new players who don't know that THF before 15 is basicly a handicap for a group. Before level 15 there really isn't anything you can do for a group, THF basicly just a gimped WAR without any of it's abilities before 15.
So work on getting to level 15, then work on mastering Sneak Attack. Hopefully you are using a Sword and not a dagger. If not, start doing so now, so you can use Sneak Attack+Fast Blade in Skill Chains for impressive damage, even at your level. Because once you hit level 15, Sneak Attack and Treasure Hunter are great abilities that people will want to have in their party.

for thf...
i suggest lvl'ing sword and dagger at the same time...
switch to dagger till its capped...
then switch back to sword so you can sa + fb...
so at 33 you won't be behind in dagger lvls...

ok a few questions:
what is the cap for dagger? for thf
how high a lvl as a thf do you ahve to be to get a higher level job?
Whenever i start up my game is says that i need to make sure i have the expansion installed, but i have no idea weather or not it has been already installed or not. Does it automatically install when you install XI? if not, how do you install it because i put in the installation disk and says it was going to uninstall the game then reinstall it.

you need to be lvl 30...
as for the expansion question...
there should be a disk with rise of the zilart on it...
im not sure if you have to uninstall ffxi first then go through the process again...

REAL subtle, dood.... Especially considering you added me.....
I'm only at 11... but I keep finding groups that either pity Thieves or don't know they suck. I found a bunch of veterans, both Japanese and American who took me, so I'm pretty sure it's pity, nothing more. Thanks go to the people in my link who powerlevelled me (Thanks SakuraX, if you still come here!). I finally managed to upgrade past noob armor, but it cost my hard-reamed cash. People at the AH are stupid... They'll pay an extra 250 gold to NOT zone... Don't ever buy pickaxes there, if you're in Bastok. They're 200~ at the item shop in the Mines district, as opposed to 500 at the AH. Similarly, make sure shops actually are carrying the items you're looking for. The AH normally will rip you off of easily obtainable items. Also, for any noobs in Bastok, the Siren's Tear quest is repeatable, for easy fame and gil. Not much, but easy.
Oh, and the funniest quote I've seen goes to Hiko:
"Drop zinc, you limbless bastards!" As he was trying to get Zinc Ore from some Tunnel Worms while levelling his Ninja.
I hope I find more groups that pity Thieves.... This kindness will probably make me treat others the same way later on.......

Aaahhh, what a day yesterday was... And a bittersweet one at that. I died three times. None of them were my fault. One of the times I was dead before I even knew I was being attacked. I zoned into the Crawler's Nest and watched myself fall as soon as the zone loaded. Once more things started to load in, I saw about 20 (I'm not even exaggerating) Crawlers standing over my body.
But on the bright side, I did get a papyrus and a bomb coal. Now I need a Mold and level 50...

and I soloed pretty much till 13 till I started to lfg as low lv thf, but I have seen parties in the Highalnds around 10 so it's yer call.

MMORPG Lesson one:
All characters are stored on the server, not on the computer of the player. If they were on the computer, they'd be rediculously easy to hack out.
You would lose your macro information, I think, and you'd have to repatch, but other then that, nothing.
I have no clue about the disc question though.
When do I get my next dagger skill? I'm a thief who's got it at 33, and I'm still waiting....
RDMs are cool because of their status magic. You're just a Red Mage whore, DRL. You wait till I get my Sneak Attack....

Well, you'd have till August to reactivate it before your characters go bye-bye. If that matters to ya, anyway.
Edit: Sell it over E-Bay if you can't continue on it. You can make a fortune selling MMORPG accounts, if they're good enough. Finish your AF quests and you'd probably be looking at a cool 1000 bucks, depending on the going market.

The BEST place to hunt ghouls in Gusgen, a mine off to the east side of Highlands..
ghouls are hard though, you need at least some 25-30's going in there and killing them to get a drop.....I've helped alot of n00bs get the skull this way;
you invite them to party they zone into the mine, lol sit down and lwt the higher levels waste the ghouls till one drops the skull.

OMG, I finaly managed to get a party again! I got level 48 finaly and now I'm wearing my Life Belt. To be perfectly honest, I don't notice any difference. In fact, since I put the belt on I've been paying a lot closer attention to my hit ratio and I've noticed I seem to miss even MORE. And since I gave up my Sword Belt for the Life belt I'm not hitting quite as hard anymore either. With the equipment I'm wearing now I've got +7 to DEX and +16 to Accuracy. Thats not too shabby, right?
I have my shiny new Yu Yu Hakusho boxset to thank for the party. I just turned on Seek Party and started my YYH marathon, and eventually I got an invite, about 5 DVD's into it. I'm at level 48, but level 50 seems LIGHT YEARS away.

Because they knew that amidst the 5s and 7s, there'd be damage counts higher then any of the meleers was capable of. I haven't even tried linking it with a Weapon Skill yet, and I've dealt a minimum of 50 points (Remember that I'm 15). Well I moved to Unicorn last week....
It was like night and day....
People were so helpful and willing to group there I got back to 11 in 2 days.
Anyways after reading some of the other posts and some of my old questions in this thread I decided to experience some of the other classes. I switched to warrior and i really like it. About 11 million times more than thief. But sadly I do miss the cash though.
I also did something that seems like a good idea now but i hope i won't regret it....I changed my starting city from Bastok To San....I like it out there. Anything beats just sitting around looking at....well rocks lol. Though San is a bit harder to level in due to mass amounts of new players like myself.
Anyways with my warrior I leveled polearm, sword, great sword in case i decided to go dragoon or dark or anything lol when i get 30 But to be honest I like warrior. For some odd reason it makes me think of a soldier class. I really wouldn't mind to get a WAR to high levels. I am wondering on what I should take as a sub though...
Any ideas?
I am thinking monk simply because of the hp and other stuff not to mention boost etc....but I am not sure. Any suggestions will help.
Oh also a weapons question.....I may be wrong but isnt the Great Axe an ideal weapon for a warrior or is it great sword?
I started working on a monk as a sub yesterday to escape the madness of the egg shouts....people are giving away their whole fortunes just to get certain letters. I don't really know what's going on cause I havent gotten to play much in the last 2 days but oh well.

One of the coolest high level warriors i've ever seen was a War/Nin. He had a pair of single handed axes and helped me get the ninja job. He was awesome!
The higher the level you get the harder it is to find a party. People start getting really picky on who they invite. My advice is to make sure you are well equiped and try to make friends with other people you level. Either that or switch to beastmaster and then you don't have to worry about a party at all :)

Well I logged into San last night and there were so many people spamming about eggs you could barely move. I mean there must have been hundreds of people in town. I was really shocked by this. Of course on some of the more popular PC mmorpgs you might see stuff like this....but watching all this egg madness made me think of the other PS2 mmorpg Everquest Online Adventures. There are times there where it seems there are less than 100 people on the server much less in town. For anyone who was switching from that game without xp from other online games must have had a heart attack.
The egg thing seems a good way to make money but eh I took this time to sell my collection of rabbit hides and make some shifty moves for a great axe. Like I said before being a warrior is pretty fun. And this is coming from someone who said "I DESPISE tanking!".
The egg thing is a menace though I hope I am not missing out on some uber item or something.

Yesterday I made an alt also to handle me money making ventures when I'm away like bazaaring and such. But since he is in bastok I did some messing around and learned a important lesson.
Store lvl 8. Great Axe: 698 gil
San O.D. Auction House lvl 8. Great axe: 15,000 gil
Yikes! And the worst part about it Bastok people had 5 same day sales of 15k for a 698 gil great axe. And the axe was right in town all they had to do was go to the shop! Maybe shops change inventory from time to time but I don't know.
I'm glad I got the alt as I can gather lower level equipment from around the globe for decent prices. But eh the most important thing is that the AH isn't always the best price.
Also I see that the returns are getting horrid too. Before I stopped playing 2 nites ago zinc ore went for about 300 gil and up. I log on last nite and they are selling for 90 gil? BAD!
I guess it's still the "I'll sell lower to sell mine first" or "let's scam the newbs" attitude for now but I think things will balance themselves out. Some people who were lacking in cash got some good luck with the egg deals and made some dough. However the rich get richer lol.......and the poor....well farm rabbits lol....
Go rabbit hide! The official socks nose warmer material for Goblin Thugs everywhere! Gobbynomics! Word Life!

You can get different combonations of eggs and then give the combos to the Moogles for prizes. If you get the first three letters of your name you get some egg that you can equip in the Ammo slot that raises your VIT or something. *shrugs*

Happy Egg and a Lucky Egg, itens that go in the throwing equip slot so whatever stats they have it's a small boost, but a boost that you wouldn't have b4.....

They introduced a Conflict Battle. ^_______^ It's called Ballista.
"In accordance with the decision of the board for International Resolution through Non-Lethal Conflict, an event known as "Ballista" is to be introduced.
The following details the concept of Ballista as explained by representatives of the three nations.
This event is based upon a training exercise employed by the Royal Knights of San d'Oria. Competitors from each nation attempt to score the most points within a set time by throwing a stone, or "Petra," into a castle-like construction known as a "Rook."
After confirming the schedule for Ballista, competitors register their participation though the "Herald," the referee for the event. Once the competitors have all gathered at the appointed place, the Herald declares the beginning of the match. The first thing competitors must do is find a Petra, several of which have been buried somewhere in the playing field by the Herald prior to the match.
Competitors who manage to find a Petra must then seek out a Rook. However, Rooks are not always open to a throw from a player. To open a Rook, a competitor needs to achieve "Gate Breach" status by defeating a player from the opposing team. Once Gate Breach status has been achieved, the competitor is able to score points by throwing Petras into a Rook. According to the rules of Ballista, the positions of the Rooks change at regular intervals during the course of a match.
In other words, taking out members of the opposing team in an efficient manner plays an important role in Ballista. On the assumption that battles between adventurers will differ greatly from skirmishes with monsters, the Conflict Commanders of all three nations are counting on this experience to sharpen the combat ability of their nation's heroes.
During a match, competitors who are not in possession of Petras are able to use an ability to temporarily increase their movement speed, while players who have obtained a Petra gain access to an ability that allows them to search for Rooks. Using these abilities effectively to find Petras, take down an opposing team member, then seek out a Rook to score points in as little time as possible is the path to victory in the game of Ballista.
A detailed explanation of the rules and other aspects of Ballista will be presented at a later date."
That was taken from the FFXI website. You can also find this info in your Compendium. I can't wait until they finish it! ^____^ I wanna beat the crap out of fellow adventurers and then throw rocks at big castle-like monoliths. >_>

Why would one enter a battle with a lvl 25 if they were lvl 5 in the first place? Regardless it looks like a hoot. I sometimes will check someone and think, If we fought I could kill him... xD

I couldn't possibly disagree more. In both servers I've played on, Sad d'Oria is absolutly TERRIBLE for making money, and just plain trying to level early on. The economy in Sandy is completely screwed up because EVERYONE starts there. I honestly can't stand the place, and only go there if I have to. I never go to Windy either, but thats because I never have any reason to.
Bastok may not have the best scenery, but for leveling and making money, its the best place around.

I personally like Windurst. Then again I'm Windurstian and proud of it. >_> My arguement is the Crawlers you find in Sarutabaruta and Kolshushu. Crawlers = Silk = gil. Then again I've never been to Bastok...o_O And I find San d'Oria really annoying...the city is cluttered and bothersome to navigate and the n00bs are so damn annoying there. >_O I am soooo glad I didn't go there during the egg hunt. -_o

I liked the Egg hunt... For 1.5k and about one hour of my precious time, I got a Happy Egg. Sure, it only adds 1-2 HP, but there's still a point of Vitality in an otherwise unused slot.
Things that are funny:
Price for a Coarse Boomerang (Lvl 6, Throwing, DMG 6, Delay 322, THF/RNG/WAR): 4k
Price for a Boomerang (Lvl 14, Throwing, DMG 17, Delay 322, THF/RNG/WAR): 600 gil.
I also think that Mages are Uber Arrogant (Hear me out, mages.) I doubt that it's any of you guys, but as was stated on my LS, Mages are the use them and lose them classes. RDMs, BLMs, and WHMs all seem to leave when things look bad. While the LS low level, WHM had reason (She was getting 36 exp, the rest were all getting 150) the LS BLM said "I'm only staying till I ding 18." We ALL told him that was against party etiquette, and then we started this whole conversation. The others all agreed that mages have the bad habit of leaving because they're needed, and they know that they can easily find groups.....
"I pretend to leave, and then....... SURPRISE ATTACK."
Want to try the player killing...... I mean, its logical to kill them fast, but do you respawn mid Ballista? Otherwise you could just slay the enemy group and win by default.

I guess it all depends on the party and the person. o.o Last night I was in a group full of really annoying stupid people who kept getting killed because they had no idea what the hell they were doing so me and the White Mage left the party and started are own group which was extremly succesful until my comp did something weird and I had to restart. -_o I once left a group at 18...I wanted to go get my support job quest. >> But I haven't noticed the mages leaving as a BIG problem really...maybe I just don't pay attention. -o-;

Get a Signet from a War Warlock or whatever casts signets on you in your nation and go out and mass-murder enemies to collect crystal, then trade the crystals to the W.W. (or whatever) and he will give you rank points. After getting enough points you can continue to accept missions.

Beehive chips, my friend. Beehive chips. Tons of bees around Bastok that always drop lots of Wind crystals and Beehive chips. Wind crystals don't sell as high as fire, but all you have to do for fire is kill vultures. A stack of Beehive chips sells for about 3500 in bastok and I can bring in more than one at a time, plus all the wind crystals that sell for 1300-1500 for a stack. And do I even need to mention all the gobs around that drop gob equipment. It sells for a decent price, especially for low levels. It seems to me that you just look down on Bastok like so many others.
And 37war/17thf is hardly low level. If you want to get into those levels than I have a great place in Bastok territory that I always farm at. But never you mind that, I'm not disclosing that location.

well my first character was in Bastok but eh....I had money probs there also...
also the cerebrus economy wasnt too hot either...wind and fire stacks were going for like 800...earth stacks were going for 100-200.
As for the bee chips you're right on the money there...I made some ok cash with my thief...
I dunno though I guess all the servers were like that the first couple of days but now that I am on unicorn I see things have balanced out a bit except that people are going mad for claymores lol....

I wouldnt be too hard on mages for that. I had too many experiences as a whm of being used and abused. I got party invites from groups where i was the lowest member by 2 or 3 levels sometimes. And whenever something bad happens its always the mages that end up with their face in the dirt first. I use to accept any party invites but now I pick and choose and will definitely leave a group if the people aren't doing their jobs.

It must be me then. It seems like that when the mage has to take 1 lousy hit, he runs for around. This isn't bad in combat, because of those air render attacks everyone has (I.E. 10 feet away is fair Melee game) but when the mage gets jumped and the Non-tank is the only escort, they start running. I can't smack an unengaged, moving Mob, let alone Sneak Attack one. The mages I've partied with all seem to be that way, at least. Maybe its your server? Also, it seems like a full 35% of the WHMs I partied with didn't know how to do their jobs. And finally, the only times I ever saw a mage drop first was the aforementioned one (Why in gods name does the group make the THF the escort?) Normally the Tanks drop first in my groups. Admittedly, I drop last, but that's not the point here. Perfect Dodge tends to keep me alive when necessary.
And on the BLM leaving, I wanted to do the Subjob quest very badly, but I waited for the group to fall through. As an 18 THF, groups weren't a problem, I just wanted to make sure I didn't leave them stranded. The LS BLM just flat out left the group at 18. He gave warning on everything except the TNL.....
As for Windurst and Bastok, you can rip people off too easily in Bastok for me to whine. Look up on my post about the pickaxes. If you can walk, and stand to sell 7 of them individually, it's easy money.

I was just defending my opinion that Windurst is a good place to make money. And just because it's on it's own continent doesn't mean it's that far out of the way. In the end it's probably not much farther from Jeuno than Bastok or San d'Oria. And if your ever near Selbina it's just a short boat ride to Mhaura and then a brisk walk to Windurst. Or you could always Choco there.

Now i do agree with this. I know especially with newer mages there is an instinct to run around like a chicken with its head cut off if they get attacked. It makes it that much harder for the tank to gain hate back. I myself never run, unless the whole group needs to like if there is no way we can win. Hate management is a very hard concept to learn early on and can mean the difference of life and death for mages (especially blm that chain cast). As for leaving a group prematurely, that is a pretty crappy thing to do. Ill stick with a party as long as the party is doing good (more concerned with less dying than getting massive xp). Unless the party wants me to leave if theres like a big level gap in which case I completely understand or if its really late....i stayed up till 6 in the morning with this really awesome group.

Your character is the epitome of "White Man turned Samurai." I've seen a Taru call his panic the Taru dance. I thought it looked cool, personally.
No offense to you Windurstians, but I hate your country with a passion. It's nothing personal, but I got killed about 6 times in your country. Lest you think this is due entirely to my own stupidity, part of it was the sheer number of aggroing monsters in the route from Mhaura to Windurst. Yagudo annoy me as well, because they have too many good classes. Among the peon Yagudo, I ran into Summoners, Monks, Bards, Warriors, Black Mages, and probably a few more. Now, the stupidity part of my dying in Giddeus was from running. Even I could take a summoner and his elemental, but I panicked and ran.... Guess what happened then (Train). I'm focusing on Monk right now, and I'm working with my best friend. As soon as he hits 17-18, we're doing our Rank 3 Quest. I just need a partner to draw aggroes to handle Giddeus and the Dragon. We're also oing a few spiffy quests I've heard about.

Me and Hiko were talking about it earlier, but I want everyone's input here. Would you rather be a godly PKer or the hero type that saves people in trouble? You know, if you were a lvl 75 uber, would you rather slay PCs, or save them? He said hero, I said PKer.

I'd be the hero type, but that's the way I am. Leveling THF is a pain at 45... lol.

I would be the slayer of PK'ers. I hate the thought of someone picking on those who are weaker than them just because they can. Thankfully that isn't possible in FFXI anyway. Call me a goody two shoes or a hero or whatever, but my personal code of honor and morals doesn't allow for such sadistic behavior. And I can't stand by and let it happen either.

Well, you'd be happy with events later in .Hack, Mr. Crim.
I'd be a PKer. But don't get me wrong. Although Sora was my inspiration for playing FFXI, I wouldn't go haphazardly killing every weaker PC. Not only would this draw GM attention, it would be far more dishonorable then I care to be. I'd pick my fights such that the fight could go either way. One exception would exist to this though. Noobs who harrass people with their noobness. You know, the ones who shout stupid stuff to the zone, knowing they shouldn't (I've run into this), People who CONSTANTLY ask for raises, that sort of thing. If I was REALLY mad, I might blow off some steam by taking out some level 50s trying to get their AF.
And I get the feeling me and Hiko would get REAL well acquainted. I'd be a PKer for him to kill, and he'd be a worthy challenge to fight. Everyone wins. I don't even think I'd mind losing to him, so long as the fight was glorious. I'd probably go with Nin/Thf. Yes, Sneak Attack would be nigh useless, but Flee would be good. And I'd probably pimp out my Earth Stat, since that's the one that determines your resistance to Bind Spells.

I knew I'd like Crim. He seems like a cool guy. Anyway, I was thinking much the same thing, that you and I would probably get to know onw another pretty well. I wouldn't worry about being blinded from me, I don't possess any spells or any abilities that cause blindness. Not yet, anyway. It would be frustrating to fight a theif because all they would need to do is hit Perfect Dodge and Flee and they would get away everytime. If I saw you activating Flee, if I was quick with my Tachi: Hobaku macro I could stun you just long enough to Meikyo Shisui and get off at least one more weapon skill, if I could get one more then I would get a skill chain off as well. But if you hit Perfect Dodge first then the Tachi: Hobaku would miss anyway. I'd have to start using ranged attacks on you at that point.

Anyone got screen shots of a Behemoth? I've always been curious what the buggers looked like in game.
And Hiko, I mean Bind. I imagine that the biggest killer of PKers would be parties with a black mage that could just cast Bind. After that. stand back, and use ranged attacks and nuke spells. I'd also end up pimping out resistance to sleep, although I don't know of any spells that cause Stun, so I don't think I'd bulk on that. I know of no easy way to kill you, but I'd probably be maxing out Evasion, and doing my best with parry (As a tank, you would be too) so If I Perfect Dodged at the right time the advantage would probably turn out to be mine. Especially because of the Blink Tank Goodness that is Ninja. Utsusemi would help keep me safe, but you'd be outdamaging me per strike. But then, I'd probably have more attacks then you, dual wield aside.

My Tachi: Hobaku causes stun, thats what I was talking about. The more TP I have, the longer the stun. And unfortunatly for you, TP is what Samurai are all about. Almost all my equipment adds bonuses to my DEX or Accuracy too. I've already taken special care to see to that. You're Utsusemi might be a pain, that would be the only thing I'd worry about. Although its less effective if Ninja isn't your main. Also, same goes for duel weild. It's only good for high level ninjas. Without the bonuses that ninja eventually get for duel weilding its exactly the same as using one weapon damage wise due to the way it adds the delay of both weapons together. And due to the fact that I spent 30 levels as a Warrior, and that to this day I'm still made to tank (secondary, most of the time) my parry and evasion skills are high, evasion is usually capped most of the time. And while this isn't Utsusemi, I do have Third Eye, which evades one attack 100%. I can use it every minute. The cool thing is that its activation is instant, I don't have to spend time casting it like Blink and Utsusemi, also I can't be interupted by attacks while casting it either.
Granted this is all based off of current FFXI Player vs. Mob experience. If PvP was like it seems to be in .hack some jobs would be at a severe disadvantage. But honestly, I'm not interested in PvP in the least anyway.

You DO realize that I've been shooting in the dark here, right? It's not like I've looked anything up (Nor do I intend to). I HAD meant a Ninja main anyway, since if things ever go wrong, I can just 2hr my way out of a death that counts. I DID know about what Samurai are about, however. And as a Mithra, if I twink for evasion, would I still have the better odds on it? I wouldn't know, but it seems like I would.

The fact is that I'd never win any PvP battles that were even matches or above. I'm a Hume, and I have nothing spectacular about me because of that. Every other race would have some type of advantage over me.

you guys all know that pvp is gonna be each nation against eachother?
if you search on gamefaqs theres a video called ballista which is the pvp testing they have done...
all i can say is...its gonna be fun...
anyways...
last night was the best night EVER!
i came home from frys with skies of arcadia legends for $20...
i thought it couldn't get better...
WRONG!
i came home...my brother was playing on my thf...which he lvl'ed a bit...
but the best part is he camped lizzy twice and got the BOOTS!
so i said he could keep those...
and i camped it myself for 3 hrs...2 really since i didn't get the spawn after his...
anyways...3 hrs. later guess who shows up? lizzy...
i flee'd to her...brought my boomerang out...claimed...
killed lizzy...and guess what? ANOTHER PAIR!
i'm now a proud owner of leaping boots...
i will never sell my pair...
so out of 3 fights with lizzy we got 2 drops ^^
i'll post a picture later...
webshots is taking a long time to put it up...

lol, as a thf I'm screwed in straight up combat. :P Sure, people can lock onto me and follow, but they wouldn't be able to keep up with Flee. lol.

Don't forget that if you pimp your Earth stat then Bind just got a lot less likely to work.
I do wonder how useful Thiefs will be in PVP mode though. You gotta figure they'd make great ball holders (Flee). And they give you the basics to Ballista in the Compendium. It does sound cool, but I don't know if I'd enjoy it pre-level 25.

Despite the advice given to me by a Kain wannabe, I'm going ahead and leveling my main job Red Mage. People are really friendly, which is shocking to me. I really need money, I want a better weapon than I have, all I have now is a Onion dagger and that just doesn't cut it. I have a bit of a dilemma here and I probably know the answer to it already..so here it goes: as some of you might already know, I am out of the country and the internet doesnt come easy for a lot of us. If you want to get online, you will most likely pay the internet cafe's fee (which is about 6$/hr). Well I am trying to play FFXI again and from what I can tell, I missed a lot of updates. I was succesful in updating my POL Viewer. But the FFXI updates will take way too much time. The internet service here isnt dependable. It crashes often, so whenever I try to update, it doesnt take long till it crashes. Does anyone know that if I try again some other time, will it resume from downloading and pick up to where I last left it? or do I have to start all over again? It does cost me a lot of money just to get on that long to try and update. I wish POL/SquareEnix would put out an update CD for people like me. Anyway, if you know anything that might be able to help me out and continue playing again..Ok please let me know...

Where do you get the license?

Where do you get the license?
[Ballista License
Before an adventurer can participate in Ballista, he/she will require a Ballista License.
Only after obtaining permission from the leaders of the three nations, as well as from the Conflict Commander of one’s nation, can a player obtain a license. A player must also be at least rank 3 to begin the application process.
This license will never expire and will be lost only if a player changes nationality. If a license is lost in this manner, the player must reapply with the Conflict Commander of their new nation.]
Sukashi says:
Ok, just finished the Ballista quest. It's really easy as long as you have Warp or Tele-Holla, -Mea, -Dem :P
Depending on your nationality, you talk to the commander NPC of your nation:
Bastok: Invincible Shield, Galka outside of CID's office in the Metalworks
San d'Oria: Excenmille, Elvaan near the North San d'Oria exit to West Ronfaure
Windurst: Mhabi Molkot, Mithra in a room in Heaven's Tower. Basically go north, around the fountain inside and you'll be in there.
After you talk to your commander NPC, s/he will give you two Key Item letters. You then go to the other two nations, and seek the other NPCs out. When you get to the NPCs however, they will tell you to go to the "king" or "leader" of the area, basically Karst for Bastok, King Destin for San d'Oria, and Star Sibyl for Windurst. However, for Windurst you simply talk to Kupipi.

Dood, if you're that anti-pvp you don't have to do it. And besides, the more content, the better, as far as I'm concerned. They needed some more direct pvp in my book anyway, and this'll do it. Anyone mind esplaining party mechanics in pvp to me? Provoke would HAVE to do something like alter the target for 10 seconds or SOMETHING to be useful. Otherwise, WHM, and BLM would be utterly useless, since they'd last a full 10 seconds in combat whilst the warriors went to go attack them. I imagine Thieves wouldn't be too good either, since any PC of intelligence would be able to move just enough to stop Sneak and Trick attack. Well, they wouldn't be good in combat, anyway. They could still be ball holders though.

actually I'm wondering about this too....
This is a guess from me since i am nowhere near rank 3 or 25....
I'm guessing all abilities work like in some of the eq games....and that casters will be a problem because of BIND! Grrrrr....I really want to know how it works cause at first glance to me it seems that status ailments will help you. If I wasnt doing work I'd go bug some people about it.
Still though I hope everything works out with it and it becomes a fun diversion from the levelin'....well leveling everything lol....
