Speaking of stupid Red Mages... I've met the worst Red Mage I've ever seen. I first noticed him because he was suddenly kicked from the party he was in, and they just said that they didn't "need a RDM". I thought that was rather cold... Then he joined our party.... and I learned first hand why he was kicked from the last party.

This guy is a level 29 Red Mage. You'd think after 29 freaking levels you'd know how to use the job. Well he apparently thinks that he's a Warrior because all he does is melee and will never ever cast a single spell unless 3 or 4 people from the party all yell at him to do it. And here's the best part. We were about to start pulling again, and he says "Hey, I need Protect." Everyone else was like "WTF, you are a RDM!!" And he says "Oh yeah, I forgot." It's not like he is used to being a WAR and is adjusting, because his subjob is a level 5 WAR, while his main job is 29 RDM. He is just a moron.

Well damn, look at all that bitching I did over that lame RDM, and I haven't even began to complain about what I came here to complain about... which is the emergency server maintenence or whatever they are doing now. I actually have all night tonight to try and hit level 30 ( I just reached 29) and then they kick everyone off for server maintanence all night....... I want to cry, I just want to be a Samurai! Is that so wrong?

yeah...

rdm's at later lvls don't melee too much...

they are usually just spend time casting...

yea that sounds pretty good. I wont melee to long. I like to party, but only when we are all benefited, and not when i could get more EXP as melee. But its all good. I got tons of money for spells from my bro. So I should be alright. Probably buy some new armor and weapons at lvl 10 or so then get to 12-14 and party around. I llike usin magic a whole lot and settin macros is even easier. thnx for the help guys. Gonna get to play all today and tommorow so it shouldnt be too hard to get to 10.

Honestly alot of dragoons I meet are not all that smart.......

I think I am the only Dragoon that isn't focusing on def, but amror that increases stats instead. All other drgs that I have seen wear the centurions body piece, and other gear that focuses on stuff that drgs. dont really need.

I have seen some even try to say that they could be the tank of groups if need be...... ;) Love to see them peeps die(I know that's a cruel thing to say but :) )

Although, I was in a party of 4 drgs a brd and a wm and we were kicking too much *** to count.

and finally my sneak+double is doing good damage....around 300+ which is a hell of a lot better than what I used to hit.

In all honesty, a dragoon can tank still at the mid-levels. It's a last resort situation though, you have to have strong healing for it to work as well as a warrior or paladin. It's still not hard to accomplish in the 40s, but I still refuse to do it. It's the same as a tanking ranger in EQ. I just don't entrust my life to healers until after I've seen them do their job. I won't willingly die for just any group. I'll more than willingly die to save someone in my LS on a raid, but screw the anonymous group types (for the most part). ;p

I'm fairly focused on stats. I couldn't care less about somethign like the Mercenary Captain's Doublet, considering it's only 1dex, and it takes an even number to make any real difference (2dex=1accuracy). I have total +10 dex as well as a raw +3 accuracy from my snow mitten Battle Gloves.

As far as my sub, considering I absolutely refuse to tank (if I wanted to tank, I'd play a true tank), so I also refuse to set warrior as sub. At 50 I will, because Double Attack will be much more than worth it. I'd consider thief, but thief is only 17, meaning it's behind in levels. Samurai is 28, so as much as it (doesn't) help, it works, and levels up with me, thus, more stat bonuses.

man...

after looking at some ffxi forums...

my mind is now set on another class...

bst...

for some reason it just sounds like a great class...

so when i hit 30...

i will do both the rng and bst quest...

i will probably go bst first and then go to rng whenever i feel bored...

after that i have no idea what i want to do...

i'm thinking of going back to thf and going to the higher lvls with it...

Heh, careful with drk/sam combo. Until you get Spiral Hell, you can't exactly manage your hate. And Guillotine = 4 hits = 1000+ dmg = a lot of freaking hate. sam sub guillotine is likely to get you killed, especially if you desire to use your drk abilites like Soul Eater. Though, sam sub + Spiral Hell = woo.

Also, grats on samurai. It's so-so until 30. Well, it might be better post patch seeing as hitting 2hr now gives you the full 300% TP. I leveled sam to 28 pre-patch, so I always had to build up 300% on my own before I could use it. =/ But once you get a few more WS and the madness of Meditate, sam should be really enjoyable. Don't forget to level polearm up too. ;p

in my party, I should be ok.

Or I could always sub thief or warrior, I guess.
But I'd rather sub samurai.

Ok, I'm still a little unclear on just what exactly the Samurai 2 hour does. Maybe I'm just slow, but the descriptions don't seem to make a much sense to me. Allows weapon skills for a fixed TP cost? Does that mean using a WS doesn't drain all of the TP you have stored up? Is this 2 hour good when compared to the 2 hours of other jobs?

Oh, and in regards to using polearm, I know I should, and I think eventually I will, but when I think of "Samurai" I think of a katana. And thats what I really really want to use. I heard someone say that great katana is "useless" at later levels. Is that true? If I max out my Great Katana skill I'll switch to polearm anyway, but I really want to use katanas. But I do realize how effective penta thrust + the Samurai's accellerated TP rate is. I just love katanas, you know?

Michael
January 22nd, 2004, 12:29 PM
Even with a good tank, you'll be doing too much damage. Guillotine = four hits, ~1000 dmg. You spam that, you better not be using Soul Eater. You use Soul Eater, you're going to die. ;p There's a good reason why there aren't many pre-Spiral Hell drk/sam. And trust me, a 'good whm' doesn't want to sit there and hold your hand every fight because you're being reckless. ;p

The samurai two hour fills your TP to 300%, then each WS you use during the duration of your two hour only takes 100% each. Thus, you could hit meditate, wait for it to hit 100, WS, 2hr, WS x3. Total 4 WS. If Meditate was instant, you could do five, but it's 10tp a second for 10s, so by the time you had 100 again, it'd be too late.

That idea had occured to me, it's just that I doubt my own ability to come up with the funds to constantly update 2 different weapons as I level up.

But I managed to get to level 10 with my Samurai today. I killed so many bees that its not even funny. I could have moved on to something else, but I am so broke that I wanted to get as many Beehive chips as I could to sell in the AH since thats the only thing that I know of that makes a good source of gil. Maybe I'll farm them a little more tomorrow night then see about investing in a polearm. But so far I love my Great Katana.

There are a couple of us on Odin. I never see Ashitaka at all anymore-- I've only seen him once. But Aelice plays on Odin as Rinlocke. I'm Kanzen.

38drg, 31mnk, 28sam, 19thf, 15war, 12nin, 10drk, 8rng, 4rdm, and 2blm! Heh.

Hiko, I dunno where're leveling, but if you're in Windurst, I can tell you come quick cash tricks. 1 yagudo necklace + 1 wind crystal = 3 grass threads; 3 grass threads + 1 earth crystal = 1 grass cloth. 12 grass cloth = ~3k (at least on Odin, and I'm sure any variation in that price is a proportional variation in general economy). Also in Tahrongi, the Pygmaoi's will drop Saruta Cottonballs, 9k for a stack of them.

Seijuro_Hiko_IX
January 22nd, 2004, 10:34 PM
I'm leveling around Bastok, fighting the Maneating Hornets to get Beehive chips. A stack of 12 of them sells for about 3.5k. I heard there is some way to synth them to make Beezwax and 12 of them sells for like 12k or something, but since I have never crafted anything before, I have no idea what the recipe is for that.

Michael
January 22nd, 2004, 10:41 PM
I'd hate to level around Bastok. =/ Everything looks the same, it's all sandy..that's it. Woo. I need green, damn it.

Beeswax is alchemy. 1 fire + 3 bee chips + 1 distilled water yields one.

So uh, if you're getting 3.5k for a stack, you'd need 3 stacks to make a stack of beeswax, not sure going price on distilled water (I'm sure it's really cheap at guilds), but that's also a stack of fires. I'd say it's not worth the risk of failure. Fires on my server are anywhere between 1.5 and 2.2k-- that'd be 10.5 for the chips, up to ~12.5 for the fires. You break even, if not make/lose money. Stick to just the bee chips. =p

And Dragoon 40. Bazing.

I'm having way too much fun with thf sub. Like, so much to the point where I don't think I'll even bother leveling warrior to 25 for double attack at 50. I went to Gustav to level tonight. I was hitting Incredibly Tough High Defense bats and flies for 250-400 damage with a sneak + double thrust. Sadly, there was too much aoe action to even try to maintain my wyvern, so I let Cerulean die and just went hardcore sneak thrust doom. Two white mages, a samurai, a dragoon, a thief, and a black mage. I never would have thought we'd be getting 5 chains of 200+ exp with a group like that. Insanity. And the sam could just meditate and ws with whoever was ready, so we either had a Double Thust > Tachi: Enpi Distortion or a Tachi: Enpi > Viper Bite Distortion. I ended up tanking (in essence, sam was MT, but with thf sneak/trick/viper behind me and me sneak+double, I ended up tanking more than her), but with 2whm and chaining for 200 per, I didn't even care-- haha.

Time to go look up AF1~ :D

I have a question. I know this won't be relevant to me for like 2 months or so, but how exactly do you go about getting the AF armor for your job? Wait..... let me guess..... More freaking impossible quests, right? Quests quests quests quests quests, and more quests....

Anyway, I've been leveling Great Katana and Polearm. And I love my Great Katana and was always a little disapointed in the performance of the polearm. So I decided I'd stop switching back and forth until one was capped, then I'd do the other until it was capped. I was in a great party in the dunes and we were raping everything. Between myself slashing them to ribbons and the Paladin tanking everything while helping the WHM heal we owned. And durning that time my Great Katana capped. So I switched to my pole arm which was at level 24. The next battle was a Gob just like we had been fighting the whole time, and the whole party nearly died. 2 of our guys died and the rest of us made it out with about 20 or 30 HP each. It was all because of that damn spear. I was only able to hit the goblin once, and I couldn't cancel the bombs like I always do with Tachi: Hobaku. So after that the party split up and I went to the Highlands to solo and level my spear. Decent Challenges were almost killing me. If I got weak I'd switch back to the Great Katana and the match would be over almost instantly. Then I died there because of that spear. So right about now I really really hate polearms.

Michael
January 26th, 2004, 02:18 AM
Yes, polearms are a two handed, slow weapon. You can't really expect to jump into a battle with your skill equal to a level 8's and do well with it.

As for skill uping solo, it doesn't matter what the mob cons to you. Don't fight decent challenges. That's essentially begging to die over level 10. Especially when your weapon skill is that of a level 8. Skill ups are based on your skill level versus the mob's level, not your character level.. You could probably actually still go skill up on things that are too weak to be worthwhile. Regardless, I don't recommend it. What I recommend you do is pick up a higher level polearm, switch to warrior, and run around with it. (Cheapest/easiest is probably the level 24 "Spear." The Level 30 Halberd is more than likely not worth the investment, heh.) Kill a bunch of low level stuff. Specifically, go to La Theine and kill Akbaba until you get to 28 skill. Then you could try Mad Sheep and Thickshells for a few more levels, then go to Orcs (Grunt, Neckchopper, Stonechucker) or Goblins (Ambusher, Tinkerer, Butcher). Sheep and crabs will get you to 34, Orcs and Goblins will get you to 36. The skill cap for samurai polearm at 14 is 42, so that'll be close enough to raise it in a serious group. Honestly, I was monk soloing the orcs and goblins for exp back in my mid-upper teens, so a level 30, even with crappy skill should be able to tear though them.

And yes AF armor is all quested. 'cept the quests are even more fun than others. Unless you're a thief, you have to fight mobs for coffer keys, then go deep into higher level dungeons and open a coffer for either your AF item, or a key item used in part of the quest. Thieves can just pick the locks, they don't have to camp for the keys. And these mobs you fight are normal higher level mob fights, there are also NMs you fight for certain pieces on top of obtaining coffer keys. My Draken Mail requires me opening a coffer in Ifrit's Cauldron. :/

From what I understand, samurai AF is a pain in the *** too. Have fun.

On other news, 42. More than likely completeling AF1 tomorrow afternoon with some higher level friends. AF1 quests are easy, one fight and you're done, for the most part. Again, thieves have it easy, they run up to a mob, steal some soup, then run the other way, really fast. While I'm waiting for friends to log on and gather up, going to level thief. Need to get thief to 25. 50/25 drg with flee is going to be so awesome.

I've gotten my polearm up to level 38 now. I'm definatly hitting more often with it. But I still hit for much less damage even though the spear is stronger than my katana, and in my opinion I look much less cool with the spear. :P I wish it would hurry up and cap so I can get back to kicking ***.

Thief Lv23, Dragoon Lv43~

Today went well. Sort of. Spent 42,000G on a Life belt (+10 accuracy, Lv48) and I have a Bridagine already (10hp 2dex 2vit). Once I'm level 48, the only slots not giving me either dex or accuracy will be my cloak, my earrings, and my lance. Lance could if I use my AF1 (+1dex +1vit), but I don't think 1dex is worth the 8 more damage on a Mythril Lance, so I'm going for that. Was depressing going from 65,000G to 23,000G in an instant, and I still have yet to buy my Lv48 Mythril Lance (~15,000G), but it's for a good cause, and I'm already on my way to making the money back. During today's drg/thf leveling session I made a grand total of 5500xp in about three hours, collected a full stack of Mythril Beastcoins stealing from the goblins we were fighting, and won a scroll of Stun, which sells for another 5,000G.

It's sort of temping to take a day to myself and go to Giddeus. Bring like 5 stacks of wind and 5 stacks of earth, fight birds all day long, steal silver beastcoins (4k/stack), synth yagudo necklaces into grass cloths (3k/stack... 15,000G baring no failure), and with gil drops alone there, an hour and a half yields 10,000G. I love thief so much.

Sick of the dunes, I decided I do something else today. I was going to go farming, but I tried to find Leaping Lizzie first. After waiting around for 2 hours without even seeing one, I let another guy there talk me into looking for a NM sheep in the Highlands. About 2 hours after that we still had seen nothing. So now I decided to level Thief up to 15 so I can use it as a subjob when I farm.

I spent nearly ten hours today with seek party up, got one invite by a member of a group that was leaving, he wanted me to replace him, I got to the group, and then when he told them he was leaving and I was replacing him, the asshat of a leader invited someone else who wasn't even near the nest. Wee.

Honestly, in general, I do love this game, but sitting for more than four hours looking for a party is total and utter bs. I've played both EQ and DAoC seriously, and NEVER had to seek for more than four hours until end game. And that was only because I'd be picky and refuse to party outside of certain locations. FFXI I can sit in Jeuno waiting for an invite, ANY INVITE for HOURS and nothing. This is a major problem. It's like unless you have some totally screwed up zombie sleep schedule, you can't really succeed much beyond 40. Even worse, not even a zombie sleep schedule helps. I have about three more hours of awake time, and the most exp I got was 18 for soloing a goblin smithy with level 1 beastmaster sub because I was bored and charmed some bats and needed a target. Thanks Square-Enix, thanks for making a game with such a nazified grouping system where you can't even hope to succeed without certain jobs. Thanks for making a game where it's literally impossible to solo unless you're a specific class. If this keeps up, even when a lot more NA catch up to me (it's not like there's a shortage of 40s NA), I'll probably end up going to WoW or EQ2 regardless of how much I love dragoon. =/

Im gonna have to agree with you, michael. This game gets incredibly annoying after lvl 40. You can't find a group for hours, the only way to level is with friends that are the same level, everyday, at the same hours. You have to lose sleep, you have to have a ****ed up schedual, and you need to have no life what so ever.

Ive been incredibly let down by this aspect of the game. It seems like you can't level up unless you speak japanese, or give your life up for this game. Even then, its hard as hell.

I guess thats why I quit at 44/20 tho. Couldnt take the leveling crap anymore.

Well its the extreme truth, coming from two guys that have gotten to that point in the game. Weather you quit like me or keep pushing yourself to finish is up to you. Ill deffenatly come back, one day. But it won't be for a while. I really need a break from that game and I still have no plans of returning, yet.

When I compare FFXI to AC2, AC2 is fast leveling.

I can't even get japanese groups. ;p

I just signed up for WoW beta. If I get picked, bye bye FFXI. Haha. I also looked at the official EQ2 page, they finally confirmed every class tree, now I'm getting all hyped up about that too. It's safe to say I just hit a HARD burnout with FFXI. But it's not a typical MMORPG burn out. From time to time I got bored with EQ in general, but I came back. From time to time I got bored in DAoC, but I came back. With FFXI, I'm not bored with it. I want to keep going, I want to keep leveling, I want to progress, I want to play my dragoon all the way through, I want my full AF gear, etc etc... but as much as I want to do all these things, I CAN'T-- I'm not given a choice... I just can't. Hate so much right now.

Haha, and thats saying alot for you. :P I was gonna get a transfer to your server, just to mooch off your japanese. :P j/k.

I know exactly how you feel and what you mean. I love my White mage to death, and im a kickass white mage, also including the fact that I am/was a very popular one.

Like I said before. Give your life, your sleep, and your time up for the game, and you will level passed 50. Besides that, I don't see anyone leveling anytime soon. Its gotten me down, and im extremly pissed at the game. ;\ Why the hell did they make leveling up so hard? I mean christ. ~_~ what the hell...

I know it's been awhile, and everyone is burnt out on it now, but my friend Chris and I are trying to set up getting us to join, it's a matter of coming up with the money to pay for it each month. He is going to start as a Fighter and I'll just be a Red Mage.

FFXI is my first and will be my only MMORPG. I have no interest in any other ones. I'll play it until I don't feel like playing it anymore, whenever that may be. Besides, I doubt WoW has a Samurai class, and thats the main reason I got FFXI. I'm hoping that by the time I get to your guy's levels, there will be more people at that level who I can party with. But as of late, I can't even get a decent party in the dunes. Oh, the horror stories you can tell about parties in the dunes.......

Anyway, got my thf up to 13, its going extremely slowly. I can't wait till I hit 15 so I don't have to be a thf anymore. I want to go back to my Samurai!

Well, it's been a while so i'll recap. Got my Red Mage to lvl 15. I have to say, partying in the dunes really does give alot. Had a bunch of aweosme parties. It has been so much fun with red mage. Im not sure what i am going to do for my first subjob, i was thinking either whm or war. whm for mp and the whm spells i love, or war for strength and awesome weapon skills. Im kinda stuck, but have plenty of time to decide.

You know I was actually going to ask this question about how you guys feel about FFXI now that the pre-hype has dropped and you have been playing for sometime.....

The long party waits is something I hate in any MMORPG but wow it really sounds bad.

Is it something that you think will be better after the PS2 players (like myself!) join the servers?

In a way it really sounds like the only way to success is to stick to a certain class. Like anything besides the caster/healer/tank types and you SOL. That sounds really bad too. I was hoping that FFXI wouldn't turn out to be that type of game.

And then again maybe it is just the lack of people.....I dunno.

Shrug, I get pretty bored with this game sometimes but then I get in a good/fun party and it all lights up again. Any of the main jobs are all very playable and this game is pretty balance... No job is useless at all. Just if you want to find a group its best to pick a subjob that is "correct" for your main job and you will never have a hard time finding a group. Also later it does not matter as much what race you pick but if you pick a Galka and want to be white mage you are really just gimping yourself. It will still work but people will not want you in a party over any other whitemage. The party waits are not really that long over all. It's best to get a couple friends and as you get higher level you will know nearly everyone in your level range that you can group with.

I didnt burn myself out. The game burnt me out. Who the hell is gonna want to waste 10 hours of their day looking for a group? I sure as hell not. I also hate the fact that I have certain people from my server messaging me, just to talk about the game/server. I don't care, I don't want to listen, go talk/whine/moan to someone else. Honestly, I had enough of the game, to not need people from my server messaging me and whining to me. I also can't stand messages that say "Power level me", Or "Why didnt you give me your stuff before you left.". Why the hell would I do those things? Go slavedrive yourself and get your own damn armor. X(

Well that was a fun rant. See what stupid people do to you?

Anyways, Me and michael cancel'd our content ID's as well. Thats 2 more out. XP DOWN WITH LEVELING, UP WITH FUN!

Whats up people!!

Burn out, bored out, oh well. Like Scarface said, to each its own. Every MMORPG will loose players on a monthly basis, but in turn new players arrive as well. Everyone is gonna burn out in FFXI and every other MMORPG out there. ITs just the nature of the beast. For those who can play whenever they please, I suggest that you shouldnt take it for granted. Some of us dont have that privilege to play whenever we please.

I can only wish I can play this game whenever I feel like.

Anyway, I was able to install my game finally, but I still had to update it. I had to wait till I get broadband access before I can do so. But playing the game in 56K isnt so bad, as a matter of fact the difference is minimal.

Other things to do?

Oh right, I could go craft, in the most annoying craft system ever. I could a) waste a ton of money working a skill up until it would make profits, yay profits. b) I could harvest the items myself- oh wait no, if I want to do that, I have to buy an item to harvest with, buy enough of them in case they break, and join the marathon races to harvesting points! WOO. I could craft the items, but oh my god, that means I have to camp worms or something to get the items I need, camp some other things for fires. Note that I also have to get experience from a mob to farm crystals. I could always buy the materials from guilds, but oh that's right, they're a limited supply and it's whoever clicks the merchant the fastest at opening time! Basically, either I spend ten hours making a few thousand gil by raising trade skills (hopefully), or I spend 50,000 gil AND ten hours making a few thousand gil by raising trade skills. I spent about two hours fishing one day, omg, I got up to 1 skill~. I've gotten both bonecraft and clothworking to 5, just off of things I loot (ie wind + yagudo necklace, earth + grass threads / wind + bone chip). Either way, tradeskills in this game are so annoyingly tedious compared to those of DAoC and EQ, it's not even funny. It's just not fun. EQ I mastered fishing and fletching. I didn't do too much tailoring, and I was ~60 smith on one character. DAoC I had over 500 (went to 1000+, as opposed to EQ's 200) fletching on my hunter, around 200 weaponcraft on my skald, and about 100 spellcraft on my necromancer.

So, I could just go straight up gil farm. Yeah, I could spend 10 hours in Giddeus killing birds and making grass cloths to sell, stealing silver beastcoins, and just terrorizing things for gil drops. It's fun in moderation, not in 10 hour bursts. I spent about 5 hours there doing Norg Fame. Wasn't too enjoyable, though, yes, it can be profitable.

I could do some quests. Oh boy, I could farm low level creatures to raise my fame a little more even though I don't have any use for it right now. Not like I'm going to get the summons, I refuse to even unlock summoner. I have every other class unlocked, so those quests are obsolete. I've done through gobbie bag 2, not looking forward to spending 50~70,000G on 3. I could spend that much money on a bed and raise my mog safe, but that takes a week, and doesn't really matter unless I'm like, getting items I want to hold on to or something.

So in the overall picture of turning a profit be it craft, quest, or farm, I could buy some more items. The only times I can't afford that I'd want right now are a Peacock Charm (3,500,000G), and a pair of Sniper Rings (up to 350,000G now, for one.). So I could go raise like four million gil, it'll only take me a couple months! Aside from those items, I already own a bridagine (next chest upgrade), I have 60,000G, so I can afford my next lance (Mythril at 48) but it hasn't been on auction lately. I already bought a Life belt (+10 accuracy, level 48 to equip). There are no worthwhile upgrades for pants(have RSE +2dex), boots(have Leaping Boots +3 dex), gloves (+3 accuracy, there are other + accuracy gloves, but they aren't dragoon wearable), cloak (+5def right now, nothing else interesting), rings (lest I spend a ton of money on dual deft rings, then I have have one whole point of accuracy more.. woo? rather keep +2 dex, save for sniper), neck (+3 dex, only thing that will ever replace are +accuracy), earrings (45 = tourtise, but apparently very rare, and very costly, next +atk earrings are 55), face (+1 dex, yet to find better). My gear is optimal, aside form spending 4,000,000 on some upgrades. So what's the point of farming unless I actually keep it up long enough to raise enough for such~? And as I said before, not terribly fun.

Hey, there are other classes. But note I already have 43 dragoon, 31 monk, 28 samurai, 23 thief, and this game is incredibly linear in leveling. Thus I've been through everywhere up through Qufim FOUR TIMES. Plus, there's nothing else I want to dabble around with right now.

I'm already Rank 5, so I have my airship and everything. Mission 5-1 is in Fei'yin, and is a burning circle capped off at 50, my LS went before I made 40 (their minimum for the raid) one group won, one group lost. Either way, I'd need to find a bunch of random people that'd want to go, and make sure I have a very balanced party. Hah. There's the ten hours thing again.

So uhm, please, tell me. What else can I do to make the game fun? Because, like, I'm all out of ideas, but you seem to have plenty!

You know I hate to say this but for those who are extremely burned out of this game brought it upon themselves. I may be wrong, and I am sure in some aspects I am but I have to disagree with the fact that you'd have to speak Japanese just to get into a good group after lv 40. Some of us needs to be reminded that FFXI just came out and its only been running for a few months in the US. The Japanese players have been playing for more than a year and their level should be higher. A friend of mine, who goes by the name of Miles (Maximillian is his in game name) here in AN has been playing the japanese version longer than anyone that I know. He's still playing the game, both US and JP client and he still manages to have fun finding new things to do. I see him PT with both JP and NA players with no problem. I guess my point is that individual gamers have to make the best out of the experience. I dont blame Michael and Kitoshi for being burned out or bored. But I think its too early to say that the game has nothing to offer anymore. I am sure that Square Enix will be expanding the game more and more, especially now that the population of the game has reached its first million.

One last thing, I dont think that fast leveling in an MMORPG is such a great idea. Yeah, I hate the fact that I've been playing the game since October and my character is barely level 18 (Work, time schedule constraints and the fact that my time is limited). But I think if the leveling of a character is faster, then there wouldnt be much challenge anymore and more people would get burned out a lot faster. Achieving a high level status isnt such a big deal if that was the case., I'd rather work hard to get my character to a lv 30 character and switch out to a Samurai character (which is my goal since i saw the Japanese release of the rise of zilart expansion) and start all over again. Then again, thats just my opinion and I am sure a lot more others share this view.

Hiko,

Dont worry about being burned out bro. Trust me, there will be times where you dont want to play the game. But dont let that detract you from coming back. FFXI is also my first MMORPG game and I love it everytime I play it (probably because I rarely get to play it for longer hours). Everytime I get a chance to play this game, I try to make the best out of it.

Michael
February 1st, 2004, 04:59 AM
Nono, see, it's not just because I've been playing too much. Far from it. How else do you think I had an active EQ account for over 40 consecutive months? Why else would I own every single expansion up through Legacy of the Ykesha? (ie, missing one, soon to be two).

How did I manage to stay entertained with DAoC for over a year?

DAoC I always played a soloable class. I don't know, something about grouping in DAoC didn't do anything for me, so it was nice to dominate things on my own. Friar could combat style endlessly with endurance chant, and when need be, I could use my crappy 1 Rejuv skill heals on myself~. EverQuest was more or less of the same. I grouped all the time in EQ, but majority of my leveling on any character was solo. Even when I grouped, I had a number of places I could go to, aside from the typical places, and I could expect to find people already there. Back in the day when leveling my monk through the 30s, the Temple of Cazic-Thule was in it's original form. Most people hated it because it was very risky due to aggro and adds-- and the trains that followed... but I didn't. I loved Cazic oh-so-much. Same with the Castle of Mistmoore in the 20s. Honestly, my favorite leveling spots were always the dungeons everyone hated (I even loved killing in the Plane of Growth. But given I was an Iksar, it's not like any of the faction hits would ever matter to me anyway). I would gladly give up grouping in The Overthere to make a run to Cazic-Thule and find a group there. FFXI isn't like that. FFXI everyone meets up in one place. And then they pick one of maybe places to go to. The world is depressingly small. 1-10, you have your newbie area. 10-15, you have one zone outside your newbie area or Valkurm Dunes. 15-20, Valkurm Dunes. 20-25, Qufim Island. 25-32, Elshimo region. 32-34 zones right outside of Jeuno, Crawler's Nest or Garliage Citadel optional. 34-36 Citadel or Nest. 36-45 Gustav Tunnel (no one ever goes there, I had to coerce groups in the process of formation to go there [hate nest, creeps me out =p]) or Nest. Above that you get a couple more options for different locales, but 90% of the time, everyone follows the same path through their job's lifetime. EQ and DAoC wasn't like that. I could walk into a zone with my level range, and probably find a group. Sure, most people went to one location, but there were always enough rebels already somewhere else. Back in my main EQ leveling days, we didn't have fancy looking for group flags so you could find people. You went to the zone and you shouted. And it worked fine. The fact that if I wanted to, I could pick up and move to a different spot was nice. The fact that if I wanted to, I could just drop the whole group idea all together and do something totally on my own without any worries was nice. Even at 51 I could walk into an etheral plane, turn the then implemented LFG flag on, and get a group within 10-20 minutes. If not, I'd just go to a different plane. No luck there, move on. I could always just grit my teeth and head to Karnor's Castle or Sebilis. I could always have some more fun in Lower Guk. Options. Or I could hit up Solusek B/Nagafen's Lair. Maybe Charasis/Howling Stones. Point is, options.

The makeup of a group in FFXI is very unforgiving. Unless you have a certain formation, the group is either going to a) suck, b) be slow. No one wants those types of groups. Thus, even if there are enough people to make a group, unless the key jobs are there, no one's going to do it. You try on your own, someone is bound to be like 'omg two rdm healers? screw this, I'll keep looking.' EQ there were three healers that could, oh my god, all be main healers. Sure druids and shamans loved it when there was a cleric since they could focus on their buffs/offensive spells, but they could all easily be main healers. You had a choice of three tanks, (four if you wanted to kill a ranger ;p). Early on it was all about the warrior, but these days high end paladins and shadow knights take that position. EQ Bard > FFXI Bard. Support melee damage you had rangers, monks (also optimal pull whores in exp groups), rogues, both warriors and shadow knights could work well as support damage (regardless of whether they were good or not, I refuse to call a paladin a support melee. ;p), beastlords. For offensive spell casting you had druids, necromancers (though most solo'd), wizards, magicians. Debuffing went to both shamans and enchanters (for the most part). Bards and enchanters were effective for crowd control, and if need be, a necro could handle it too. Mana regen for the caster types out there had bards, enchanters, and necromancers (necro could transfer their mana to others, then use their skeleton/lich forms to regenerate their mana). Shaman had a spell similar to convert, Canabalize. Ate HP per cast and gave mana. Always humorous seeing a shaman eat himself to death. Magicians could also summon mod rods. One click of those ate some HP and gave you mana. Back in the day people would hand them to newbies and watch the newbies kill themselves when they clicked it. Weee. Point is, EQ you could throw a group together, and it could kick ***. FFXI isn't like that, it's very very demanding. This is why it can be hard to find a group sometimes. Sometimes right now translates to 'more often than not.' It's just depressing.

Regarding leveling speed, yes, that is your opinion. One of my personal all time favorite pass times of MMORPGs are raids. Getting together with your guild, your linkshell, whatever, and taking on some difficult stuff. As I mentioned before, etheral planes. The first two planes that were introduced to EverQuest, Hate and Fear, were restricted to level 45. You couldn't even enter them before then. Successfully raiding these planes took more than one group, and back then, you couldn't even alliance the groups. Even getting into the planes without being totally wiped out instantly took strategy. Eventually after pulling all of the normal mobs, all of which had supah drops given the time of the planes, and every class's unique armor, you had a number of named mobs to pull and each had some very nice drops. After those guys were down, it was time for the king of the zone. ie, actual EverQuest gods. Innoruuk himself, and Cazic-Thule himself. Seriously, what could be more fun than killing your own god? (Iksar all worshipped Cazic, two of my three mains were iksar. =p) And there were plenty of other places to raid, all were fun, and all had some very very nice drops you wouldn't think about replacing for a long time. Okay, so I could get an alliance of people level 20, and go raid... say... the first levels of Castle Oztroja. Wow, we could get us some level 12 monk armor! OH BOY. Sure, it's fun, I'll give you that, but there's no thrill of finding rare items. I mean, I don't know about you, but I'd definitely prefer getting leather armor drops from giants in Kael to turn in for unique graphic quest armor (pre-Luclin model screw ups) for my monk, rather than some standard armor drop ten levels below the armor I'm already wearing. Low level raids are nothing compared to what you can gain and/or accomplish in mass numbers at higher levels. Higher levels = more challenge. Let's switch over to FFXI high level encounters. King Behemoth. Okay, two members of my LS went with a full alliance of level 70-75 players knowing they'd die, just to see what it was like. This guy took some crazy strategy, and even after an hour, he wasn't even close to 75% life. Now take into consideration these people are at, if not close enough to the limit of the game in levels. These people are at the epitome of power, and it's that much of a challenge. This isn't like a retarded alliance of level 12s wanting to take on a wight (challenge = high risk high reward, not stupidity). There are a number of very high end boss mobs like this. You can't compare any rare spawn NM in any random zone to something like this. This is challenge. To me, this is fun. To even attempt, levels are needed. I don't grind levels to be generally big and bad. I grind levels because the higher I am, the more challenges that await me, the more places I can raid with my linkshell, and the more prestige items I can use to better my character, and overall, the more I can enjoy the game.

Anyway, point is, no, it's not my fault. It's not my fault the game has unrelenting design. I've played a number of MMOPRGs longer than three months consecutively (see above, over 40 months) and not burned out this hard~

And it's not so much that I'm 'salty,' I got over my initial rage pretty quickly, though I don't want to go back just yet. It's that I don't like people telling me how to have fun, and that I'm doing it all wrong. Fun is relative, chief.

Well said, Michael. X)

You guys keep telling us that we burned ourselfs out. Ha, far from it. I loved FFXI, I love my WHM, and I love the world of FFXI. The thing you guys arnt getting is that what we did in the game was fun for us, which happened to be just leveling. Michael is completly right about all that other stuff you can do, its simply boring and crappy. Honestly, I loved FFXI untill the day I hit level 40. When this happened, I really got annoy'd with the slow leveling, having to level in the same damn places for 10 levels, and the constant bikering of retarded people. I mean how ****ing stupid do you have to be, to be telling the WHM which is getting damn near'd kill every round, how to do his job. I did have a group to level with, yes I could have gone all the way with them, but I wasnt gonna let certain retards in that group tell me how to do my job, ESPECIALLY when they don't know how to do thiers.

1. The paladin that sucked. She was illiterate, told me what to do, argue'd all the time, pulled things she wasn't supposed to, and she was plainly and utterly, stupid.

2. The black mage that barely casted any spells. This guy was just... idiotic. Honestly, whenever something was dead, buddy had more than half of his mana left.

3. The samurai that used a weak weapon cause it looked cool. This guy was retarded... Nuff said.

4. The dragoon which he magically managed to be the god damned weakest dragoon ive ever seen. He would die in 2 hits. Worthless bastard.

5. Some red mage. He was cool tho, cause he didnt tell me what to do, didnt suck at his own job.

So basically, I was forced to level with these stooges for god knows how many levels. I think passed 36... It was nightmarish...

So you see! Not only does this RPG have limited leveling spots, impossible to find a group case senerio's after 40, AND nothing fun to do... It also has some of the stupidest players ever.

Let me remind you, that this is just our opinions, thats all. X)

Honestly, if FFXI wasn't a Final Fantasy game, I never even would have given it a second glance. I never really thought MMORPGs were my thing, plus I honestly can't stand PC RPGs. So I'm pretty sure if I ever do get tired of FFXI then that'll be the end of my MMORPG playing.

Besides, do any of those other MMORPGs have a Samurai class? That was, after all, the whole draw to FFXI for me. Now I've finaly reached that goal, and I'm really enjoying it. After 30 levels of Warrior this is SO much more fun.

Ok, does anyone know what it means when it keeps giving me a error that says "Transmission error with lobby server"? It keeps giving me that over and over and kicks me back to the PlayOnline browser each time. I checked my content ID and it says its still active and I didn't see anywhere where it said there was a problem.

I'm getting that error too. ^^; Some people in my brother's LS also had it. Try every hour or so.. for best bets, try again tomorrow. They're updating Content IDs or whatnot, there are likely to be some spazzes like this.

I quit early tonight bcause I got tired of standing around Qufim for an hour and a half with my seek party flag up shouting the same thing over and over. I was actually considering heading back to the dunes to level.... haha, now thats how bad it was.

I've never seen Qufim so dead during daylight. That little entryway is always packed full of people, and there was only like 2 groups there.

Hiko, a lil tactic I do is throw up a search and begin chatting with the leaders of different groups. You know ones that are about yer level or so, ask them if there are any spots open or soon to be filled spots. I dunno it works for me, and anyways people like to chat anyways. :p

I've tried the game out before at my cousin's house, and I think it's ok. He doesn't have too much patience and perseverance though, so he didn't even last a month :P. I don't have a savvy computer though, so there's no way I could play it myself.

I'll just stick to Ragnarok Online. Love them 2D sprites and cute headgear ^_^. There's enough classes to keep you preoccupied (well, soon there will be more with the addition of the 2-2 jobs), or if you're lazy just sit down with people and chat -o-;. i was hunting lizzy last night and i found a ranger hunting too. so i just stood next to him and whenever he moved i moved too. and he knew that i was mooching off him :P but then he logged off.

so there was a good number of people standing around waiting for lizzy to show up, and then a lvl 6 DRK runs by and stops for a second, and lizzy spawns infront of him! so he gets it first and starts geting beat pretty bad, so instead of dying and letting someone else get lizzy cuz there was no way he'd do it, he calls for help so no one gets anything! everyone was pissed. and i was standing there for 2 hours ;_;

All day today it was the same in Qufim as last night... Now I am sort of beginning to see what Michael was talking about. It really does make me want to do something else. But why am I having problems now when I never did before. Leveling in Qufim with my WAR was awesome, I always got a party within like 10 or 15 minutes and once I gained 4 and a half levels in one day. I went from 21 to 25, it was great. But now as a SAM (which are so much cooler than WARs) I have trouble getting a party. I'll try one more time, and maybe do what Scar said. If not, I will go back to the dunes and get to like level 21 or so there.

Man, good day today for the most part. I died once in a party that needed me to tank, the whm was talking to a friend and wasn't paying attention... But I did go from level 19 to only 400 till 22. Had a few really bad parties and a few really good ones. I switched parties like every 15 minutes it seemed.... They were always breaking up because the whm always had to leave... the dang whm is all that binds a party together, I swear.

Now its story time. Listen to this. We got aggroed by a Thunder Elemental that we didn't notice, so we zoned. everyone except the whm that aggroed it lived. She got raised, But that isn't the story. On our way back, the Dancing Weapons were back, and finaly a Uber 60 SAM/ 30 THF camed and killed them. I was in awe of the Samurai's awesomeness. AF armor and everything.... But then once we got back to fighting, I noticed the SAM came up to where we were fighting, aggroed a Greater Pugil, then just stood there and called for help. My party attacked it, and she did nothing but unequip all her armor, then stand there. We all stopped attacking once we realized that a) She didn't need help, it was missing and doing about 1 dmg when it did hit, and b) she was doing it on purpose to try and get us killed. So eventually she started walking in the middle of our party so the Pugil's AOE attacks would hit us, then she aggroed another Thunder Elemental too, then called for help instantly while still just standing there. We all just stood there and waited for her. She started typing "lol lol lol" while standing there. I suggested that we call a GM, because it was obvious that this Uber was trying to get us killed. She started running around aggroing everything around after that.

I was a little upset, because I had been previously admiring this level 60 Samurai in AF armor, because someday, thats exactly what I want to be. So it was a more personal insult to me, I lost all the respect I had when I first saw her help us through the tunnel. Except for that one instance, all my experiences with ubers have been pleasant. They are usually very nice.

for some reason i never had any bad pt experiences in qufim...

the only main one was the banshee at the lake experience...

but that was our fault for staying at the lake so long...

other than that i lvl'ed up quick in qufim...

all great pts...

as for the high lvl sam doing that...

that's just annoying when ppl do it on purpose...

just call a GM and they'll look into it and perhaps take some action hopefully...

happend to my brother yesterday...

high lvl drk was dragging trains of dancing weapons to the tower...

him and many other ppl called the GM right away...

that kind of stuff just annoys me...

oh yeah...i finished the drk quest...

very easy...

now im just lvl'ing in la thiene as a bst once again...

Yeah, that just wasn't cool. It saddens me to think people enjoy doing something like that.

I hope I can get to 24 soon so I get get some new freaking armor. I've been wearing this lizard jerkin ever since my WAR was level 17. I've never had the funds to upgrade him, so he wore it till level 30. Then I got my SAM up to level 17 and now he's wearing it. So when my SAM is level 24 I'm going to get the chain mail for him.

Michael
February 4th, 2004, 05:07 PM
Chainmail isn't really worth how expensive it is, heh. It looks sweet, but it's a total waste of money. =/

Seijuro_Hiko_IX
February 4th, 2004, 05:10 PM
Ok so then I should just take Lizard jerkin to level 30 again? If chain mail isn't worth it then what should I get?

Michael
February 4th, 2004, 10:57 PM
Beetle can get you to 27, and you can get brass scalemail.

Honestly, it's up to you. Brass Scalemail is equivalent to chainmail, but it's level 27. Then at 30 you have Centurion's Mail. The problem being that just the body piece for chainmail on Odin was anywhere from 13,000 to 17,000G. It looks cool, but if you don't have the money to waste on looking cool for six levels, just get some beetle.

Seijuro_Hiko_IX
February 5th, 2004, 12:12 AM
Wait, so brass scailmail is the same def as Chain, but its higher level, and costs less? Sounds odd... is the chain just more expensive because its high def at a lower level? Kinda like how a sword can be 500 gil, but that same sword +1 is 4000 gil? If beetle is fairly cheap I can do that... But if it isn't, looks like I'm Lizard Jerkin until 27... I've taken Lizard Jerkin all the way to level 30 before... Just ask Scarface.

how was the nin quest?

Michael
February 5th, 2004, 03:11 PM
Beetle is/was anywhere between 2000-3000 per piece. Chain body was 13000-17000 for just that, then 2000-5000ish for each of the other pieces.

I always thought of the price being high simply because it's a high demand armor. It's probably the coolest looking armor up until at least 40. I mean, when I leveled samurai to 28, I picked some up as soon as I could, and it was 13,000 then. When I started to get frustrated with leveling dragoon I considered doing some samurai levels to pass the time, when I looked at the chain prices again, it had shot up to 17,000.

We October release players are screwing up the game economy so bad it's not even funny. I'm afraid of what's going to happen when PS2 version comes out.

Scarface
February 5th, 2004, 04:56 PM
yeah........when I started playing Jumping boots went for 18-20k....now...........................300 k. >_<

and as to the ninja quest

I did it along with the samurai quest so it wasn't that hard. Just had to get an uber rdm to lead us to the 3 leeches.

Michael
February 5th, 2004, 06:05 PM
Er... Leaping boots?

Leaping boots when I started were 250,000 to 300,000. Now they're like 175,000-200,000 because stupid bastards trying to undercut other players so theirs sell faster.

When I did the nin quest I was with a 70 nin (who is now like 75 nin 72 rdm amoung other 70+ jobs I can't remember specifically), and my 30 war friend. She decided to click the coral and of course all three of the leeches instantly agro her. But instead of letting Light heal her she sort of runs off and dies... haha. Light had subbed whm, so he killed the leeches then raised her and all was well.

Honestly, now that there are a lot of NA players 30+, none of the quests are necessarily 'hard' anymore. Any organised group ~35-40 can complete any of the quests.

I hate how you can't do anything on your own in this game anymore. No one I know is really around my level. I am still Rank 2 and probably will be forever. Rank 5 seems SO damn far away and hard to reach that I don't even want to bother trying to get it. The SAM quest was so frustrating to complete that I don't ever want to try doing anymore job quests. And I hate doing all those stupid annoying quests for fame, because the ones I can do on my own don't ammount to anything, and the hard ones are like, hard, and I can't do them on my own. I'll never get any fame, I'll never get a high rank, I'll never be anything after Samurai... Oh well, at least I got my Samurai. I'll be a 75 SAM someday at Rank 2 with like 9 quests completed amounting to like zero fame.

I was joking around. I doubt I'll even reach Scarface's level at the rate I'm going now. Every goal there is to achieve is too far away and to difficult to accomplish to me at this point. It's probably just a matter of time before I give up. I feel alone while playing the game because I don't know anyone my level. I never have the same people in my party from day to day. I doubt anyone really remembers me, I don't think I leave much of an imprssion on people, good or bad. Now the constant trouble of getting a decent party I'm having leaves me with a lot of time to think about what else I could be doing.

Michael
February 6th, 2004, 08:07 PM
I rarely grouped with the same people until I was in the upper 30s. Then I had to catch thief up to sub it and not be gimped (very important in my opinion), and they all either quit or passed me. Oh well.

Honestly, I don't think about the people I group with. I'll recognise their name if I group with them again, but for the most part, but rarely do I care. No offense to it, just that I'm not the type to add 320984204304 people to my friends list daily. My LS is/was the only thing that meant something more to me.

Seijuro_Hiko_IX
February 7th, 2004, 02:10 AM
Well yeah, I think I have 6 or 7 names on my friends list. And I would love to group with the people on my linkshell. But like I said they are all increadibly beyond me. Catching up is not really a realistic possibility.

But I mean, as long as I get a good party going for a better part of the time I play, I love this game. Its when I don't that I start doubting it.

You pretty much HAVE to solo whm to 10, unless you know people.

I finally logged back in, and found 20,000G in sales waiting in mine and my mule's delivery boxes. That was nice. In theory, a 60+ dragoon has some soloing options, given the leet AF helm, which you'd hopefully have by 60. Anyway, with a whm sub, and the AF helm, your pet will use Healing Breath on you when you cast a spell. I went to test it out with my level 4 whm sub of doom, and found even pre-af helm, it's rather nice. The sub's level doesn't matter, so even with level 4 sub Kagero used Healing Breath III on me, and healed for 160. The downside being since I have no helm, I have to wait until I'm down to 1/3rd, and I don't think I'd want my life riding on 1/3rd hp, if I were grinding good exp. But at least I know I can mess around and solo from time to time if I level a healing class. Originally I was just going to go for it and level whm, but I've been thinking twice about it. I mean, rdm gives the exact same effects through your wyvern. All he does is Healing Breath and attack things. By 60 I'd still have spells like Cure III, Blink, Protect II, Shell (not II ; ;). On top of these though, I'd have access to the elemental weapon buffs... most of them by 60/30. Given, whm would be more practical, because I'd have a level 30 whm leveled, and I'd be able to raise friends in need and the like (rdm raise is at 38). But I'd rather focus on making my solo experience that much better, and I have a high opinion of the elemental buffs. From what I understand, dragoon can solo grind like crazy full AF 60-63 in Kuftal killing crabs. Sure, more mana might be nice, but added guaranteed damage might be even better... I mean, for 7mp (dia) and a fast cast, I could get a 500hp heal (Healing Breath with AF focuses, and I'd only have to be at 50%, not 33%). I need to test this further, which I'll probably do when I get rdm to 14 for Cure II. I'm wondering if I were to get to 33/50% hp, and then cure myself, if my wyvern's breath would still hit me. Figure Cure III + Healing Breath at 60 would probably be a full heal from 50%, heh. Oh, and I'd also have a damage shield, even more damage~ :D I'll get back to you guys on that.. ;p

It's been 3 days now since I've played. I'm not tired of it or anything, I just really wanted to do something else. Plus I'm back at the jungles of Kazham, and I hate that place, so I didn't feel like dealing with it at the time... Everyone always wants to go out to that freaking second jungle then the whm suddenly has to leave, and the party splits up and I'm left stranded out there. It happened to me twice in the same day once. I have to spend either 500+ exp, or 750 Conquest points to get out of that damned god-forsaken second jungle. Oh, how I loathe that place.

Michael
February 12th, 2004, 12:02 AM
Meh, you can make the conquest back in a single group there.

Ever since Lv28 on Dragoon I've made it a point to have a warp scroll on me, regardless of where I'm going or what I'm doing. Honestly, it's the best idea one could ever have. ;p

woohoo!

other than that still farming for some extra gil...

and slacking off...

I replaced my whm sub for my mnk because people were questioning me on why i had whm subbed for a thief, and my best answers were "uh...so i can um heal poision n stuff". i have no idea why i subbed whm. i think it was because i was so tired of being stuck in the dunes when no one wanted a thief an everyone wanted a whm, so i thought i'd lvl whm...but that dididnt work in the long run so now im a THF/MNK in quif. yay

AND i tried to get my kazam keys. i've spent a total of 6 hours in Giddeus and not one drop. killing the right monsters and all, but no drop. its not looking good >.< and i did activate the quest too.

Nono, the whm teleport spells. Mea sells for like ~40k. I just guessed that all of them overall would be ~70,000G total if you were to quest all of them and sell them.

Though, you can buy Re-raisers. Don't ever waste conquest on a Scroll of Instant Re-raise if you ever plan on risking something that might need one. You can buy a Reraiser potion for 800G in AH. =p

Nope. No MMORPG ever "ends." There's always plenty of things to do at max level, and given the way this game works (being able to switch jobs on a whm) one character could do anything he wanted without any sacrifice. Unlike other MMORPGs like EQ and DAoC where you have to start completely over on a new character, and unlike SWG where you have to sacrifice skills you've learned to learn new ones if you wanted to change professions.

Decided I'm going to try to get to at LEAST 46 before I grind RDM any higher than 8. That'd enable me to wear my bridagine, and I'd have blink~. But I'd honestly rather get to 50, and try my hardest to get my AF as soon as possible for each level. Given, if I were exp soloing, the Helmet is the only piece of AF I'd wear. Dragoon AF has terrible defense, and honestly, I don't care if my wyvern is more accurate with it's attacks, or if it regens (I'm going to be tanking anyway >_>) AF=group def=solo. I can't wait until I get to try out the drg/rdm soloing though. I'd gladly shell out ~225,000G for Phalanx just to enjoy me some drg/rdm doom at 66. Throw stoneskin in at 68. And before those I'd have Blink at 46. Camping anything at that point should be cake. The downside to rdm instead of whm is the fact I wouldn't get any mana regen until 62/31... =p

No one replies much anymore! Even I kept coming back during my breaks!

Anyway, I decided to swap some files around out of boredom. You can find information on it both at my LS's forums (http://www.vot-linkshell.com/forum) under general and "Change your moogle" topic. It was also thieved from our forms and posted on killing ifrit. I'm sure it's been crossposted in a bunch of other places too. But anyway~ I changed my wyvern, Kagero, into a tonberry. For once, naming your wyvern something retarded like "George" would make sense, for it'd be George the Tonberry~

Observe (rather large, 1280x1024 resolution ;p):

I took a little 6 day vacation from FFXI. No real reason other than I had some new games to play. But I came back today and managed to gain 2 levels before finaly logging off for the night. Everyone in my LS is so increadily higher level than I am... It's kind of intimidating to talk sometimes, I feel so weak and pathetic.

I guess I'll have to head to the second jungle tomorrow.... *sigh* I can't get there myself, so I hope I can find a party in town, then follow someone who knows the way out to that God-forsaken place. I do have a scroll of instant warp on hand, though. And I'm not leaving the place until I'm level... well, actually, what level should I be when I can say I'm finished with Kazham? I've heard 35. PLease tell me I don't have to stay there for 7 more levels???

Michael
February 17th, 2004, 08:14 AM
No, do not stay until 35. Leave by 32. Honestly, once you're 31, try to make it a point to stay bound in Jeuno, and just seek party while sitting in Jeuno. You might get an Evil Weapon / Garliage Bat group, or you might get a jungle group.

I'm 4100 into 49. Only 3600 until Level 50, then I have to do Genkai 1 quest. >_< Penta Thrust is sweet. It's a shame I was sort of missing a lot on the stuff we were fighting. I got four of the hits in once, the rest of the time I got two, maybe three. Oh well. When I get nice combat rounds off, I can actually refresh 100% TP before Sneak Attack recycles. I feel supah.

I also broke 100,000G for the first time. Yaaay.

Farming is so easy.

Michael
February 18th, 2004, 02:43 AM
Haha, awesome. Mercenary is on my server.

And for a drg that doesn't have aoe, doesn't farm, doesn't camp, breaking 100,000 is something to be proud of. This has all been gained through leveling. I'm sorry, but farming cash is boring as freaking christ, and I don't technically need money until throughout the 50s. In fact, after I buy a few select items, I'll never have to spend money again until over 70, and it's not like any of the 70+ equipment is expensive.

I'll be farming ~1,000,000G come level 60. I need two sniper rings, an assault earring, and a merman's gorget. I may also try camping Argus for a Peacock Charm, but there's no way in christ I'm saving to buy one (4,500,000G). Aside from those items I will be wearing full AF, and I already have a Life Belt. Level 60 yields a ~60,000-80,000G lance with +7 accuracy, I might not upgrade that for awhile given the +7 accuracy.

I don't do any trade skills. I don't fish. Both are just tediusly boring. Farming is not what gets me excited about the game. It's high level raids taking on some very high ends stuff. I don't measure a character by how much money they have, but what they've accomplished. I'm in a love to hate linkshell on my server, due to the fact we get things done. We're well organized, multiple raids per week to get everyone's AF armor and genkai quests done, as well as general raids for the proverbial "phat lewt." We have a level 40 minimum for recruitment, which will soon be raised to 50. I'm one of the very few still under 50 (~4000 to 50, genkai almost done, need Exoray Mold), and we have multiple 60+ members. This is all NA, too, we have only one "honorary" JP member~ We're very strict on recruitment too. Our LS is essentially played like a high end EQ guild. You're recruited as an applicant, you stay an applicant for two weeks, then we vote on you. Yes, No, or Continue. To become a full member, you need 85% of the vote to be for Yes. Otherwise you are continued, unless you have a significant No. Another reason people tend not to like us, we're full of ourselves, and if you can't function in a high end raid/goal oriented guild, we aren't for you, you aren't going to make the cut. We've turned a number of people away.

Anyway, to each their own sense of accomplishment. Breaking 100,000 without doing any real money work is an accomplishment for me. I just spent 15,000 on my next lance and loaned 40,000 to a friend. My primary goal right now is Lv60 and full AF armor. Then level whm to 30, sam to 37, grind to 75, then catch up with war thf and whm. All to 37. After that, I'll play monk to 75. =p

Geez, the more I listen to high level people talk about the game and all the stuff they've done and have yet to do the more and more intimidated I feel. My linkshell is way ahead of me in every respect. I think I'm the only one (including Overbite) who is still at rank 2. They are all nearing level 50 and talking about stuff I don't even understand. I'm at level 28 now with my Samurai and have been deciding to play other games. FFXI takes so much time, and most of it is spent doing nothing but waiting. I had a good day today. No... I had a GREAT day today. I started playing at 2:30 AM this morning (yes, AM), and I was level 28. And By the time I quit playing at 1:15 AM the next morning, I was level 33. I used my scoll and got the hell out of Kazham and had just enough gil to buy the entire Centurion armor set.

Only problem is now I'm not sure what to do. Head to the Crawlers Nest, is what I've heard. Only I'm not exactly sure where that is, precicely.

Michael
February 23rd, 2004, 11:53 PM
Crawler's Nest is in Rolanberry Fields. You could also chain grind Evil Weapons in all three zones just outside of Jeuno in groups. I hate Crawler's Nest, and I'm still there at 52.

Grouping thing isn't getting better, but I've been playing Tactics and other games on the side not even focusing on FFXI itself. I fell asleep wating tv earlier while seeking and missed a party, haha. Oh well. I'm not going to take the whole grind as seriously as I did before. I want 60, and the only thing I'll yield seeking for is a LS raid or my AF quests, but I'll get to 60 eventually. As for my quests, I missed the part of DRG AF2 that tells you to wait for an entire real-time day, so I didn't start it early. >_< My AF gloves are sitting in a coffer in Quicksand Caves, so with some supah stealth ninjah skillz (silent oils) I'll be getting those as soon as I get to 54. Another drg in my LS has died trying to find a coffer three times... but I don't have much faith in his skills. Well see how I do, but I've potion sneaked through a dungeon before with no problems.

Oh, and just some random advice, do whatever floats your boat, but ninja are not a damage/attack class. There's no use in nin/drk, it's a waste of leveling, and you probably won't get groups at later levels unless you make them yourself. Even then, I wouldn't want to be in one, personally-- you can't do anything. Ninja are a very expensive tanking class. You can't hurt what you can't hit, you don't have to heal what doesn't get hit. Ninja tank PTs when properly played will roll exp in very fast. A ninja can't provoke and tank without a warrior sub.

Let's put it this way: ninja katana are about the same damage and delay as daggers. Ninja dual wield isn't like other MMORPGs-- until 45, your weapon's two delays are added together. A thief's source of damage is not regular attacks... my wyvern could probably compete a thief given only base attacks. However, a thf has abilities like sneak and trick attack. Stacked together at my current level a sneak/trick attack stacked on a basic attack can do over 300dmg easily, and they can use them once a minute. As a ninja, you have nothing like this. The ninjitsu damage/debuff powders do minimal damage, and are only really used to help a black mage, if even used at all. Basically, you'll get an attack bonus at 20 and again at 60, you'll get Last Resort at 30, and Soul Eater at 60. All of these enhance damage, but aren't going to help a class that isn't focused on damage. It's the same premise of how a pld/drk (or drk/pld) looks great on paper because of high attack and high defense, but it doesn't work when put together, it's just a waste of skills.

Maybe you've seen the video of the drk/nin with a Kraken Club and made this decision. If so, he was just playing around, and he used his Blood Weapon two hour to counter the damage he was doing to himself with Soul Eater. Kraken Club is a drop from the Lord of Onzozo, it can hit four times in a single attack, so he just went crazy with them after hitting last resort, soul eater, and blood weapon. It was made to just show off and have fun, he wouldn't seriously play like that.

February 24th, 2004, 09:46 PM
what about Thief/ninja? thats what im going for a the moment.

Michael
February 25th, 2004, 03:07 AM
Ultimately people choose thf/war over thf/nin. Though, up through 50 it's a very popular combination. A thf/nin with ninja properly leveled and with the scrolls can make a great puller. Utsusemi: Ichi absorbs 3 melee attacks, so hit that, run out find a mob, shoot it with gun/bow/throw things at it, then run back, assist tank taunts, and you've taken no damage which helps the healers. Thief also makes a lot of money, which will counter the cost of shihei powders you need for utsusemi. I subbed thf on drg for awhile before I got Penta Thrust, and I could steal a stack of mythril beastcoins in the duration of a single PT. Sometimes I'd only get half a stack, other times an extra coin or two. Always helped when there wasn't a real thf in the group either. Mythril beastcoins sell for 17,000G a stack, Shihei are about 5,000G a stack of 99, so you'll more than make up for the costs, you aren't tanking, so I doubt you'd end up using all 99 very quickly. thf/nin will also have both invis and hide, which will help you out a bit, spend some money on silent oils (or level whm/rdm to 25) and you'll be able to solo every single one of your AF armor coffers. Thieves don't even need keys to get their AF, they just pick the locks. The problem with thf/nin is the whole thing about dual wield being slightly over-rated. It's great for a ninja over 45, because there is no extra delay, but from 20-50 your thief's daggers would add together, say you had two 11/190 daggers, that's essentially a 22/380 weapon. At 25 there's a delay reduction, but at 50/25, you'd also be able to have Double Attack from a warrior sub. Around that time a thief gets Triple Attack. That's why people prefer warrior, you get both double and triple attack, as well as things like berserk to help your damage output overall. Having ninja leveled to at least 25 for a thief to me sounds like a good idea for general reasons, but while leveling, warrior has more value. Ninjutsu just doesn't really do anything worthwhile, you shouldn't ever get hit more than once or twice during a pull, and you don't really need to be debuffing or anything like that-- your base damage output is a series of scratches from a very fast dagger, usually very accurate and just to build TP quickly.

and remember this...........

dex adds to sneak attack damage

agi adds to trick attack damage

do find equipment that allows these abilities to shine.

Michael
February 25th, 2004, 09:49 AM
Indeed. Fairly common optimal thief gear (only listing dex and agi):
Emperor's Hairpin (3dex/agi)
Spike Necklace(3dex)
Drone Earrings (2x3agi)
Brigadine (2dex)
Rogue's Armlets (3dex, AF)
Deft Rings (2x3dex)
Republican Army Mantle (2dex, Bastok Conquest) or Federation Army Mantle (2agi, Windurst Conquest)
Mercenary Captain's Belt (1dex/agi Windurst Conquest)
Rogue's Culotte (4agi, AF)
Leaping Boots/Winged Boots [crafted from Leaping Boots] (3dex/agi)

Overall: +21(23) dex, +17(19) agi

Shield is your choice, the only I can find with dex/agi aren't usable by thief.
Daggers you might keep upgrading regardless. But for the sake of listing:
40 Marauder's Dagger (AF1) 15dmg 195dly 2dex 2agi
56 Beetle Knife 20dmg 195dly 1agi
56 Beetle Knife +1 21dmg 190dly 2agi
That's about it. There's a rare/ex dagger that's 16/150 for level 48, only 1dex/agi, so I seriously doubt it's worth the effort of getting, low damage, minimal bonuses. Also, if you were to fight Garuda and choose loot over obtaining the summon, you get Garuda's Dagger Lv65 19dmg 183dly 3agi 7attack Effect: Silence

looks like finally I will be able to play this game. New computer came by Fedex today. The game itself should come in the mail on monday.

Btw what is the busiest server on FFXI? I was thinking about going to Leviathan since a lot of people I know are playing there but then I heard there aren't that many people at all over there. I want to join the server with most people since I would be more fun and easier to find others to help me out.

Not sure how the servers compare in population, but you don't get a server select screen.

Either you keep recreating your character until you get to the server you want to go to, or you find someone to buy you a world pass. =p

It's 10,000 for a pass right? Is that expensive? I have no idea how the in game enonomy is doing right now. I heard prices are starting to go up higher, especially with the coming of the PS2 people.

World passes aren't that much. ~1,500, which isn't much.

I doubt prices are going to go up, if anywhere down. Few will go up, but majority will plummet, unless the supply is low. Newbie items/armor aren't usually is low supply. Probably the best money making item will be the bronze harness in Windurst, as usual. People STILL don't realise there's a merchant that sells them for ~240 in Port Windurst, and will pay well over 500G for one. When I first started they paid over 1,000G for one, so I'd stock up and sell them all. I rarely had a money problem at the beginning of the game, thanks to people wasting theirs~

I started leveling warrior, because uhm. I don't know, I want to level dragoon, but I hate having to choose between samurai and monk to sub. Samurai subbed is so over-rated it's not even funny. It's a good sub, but it's no where near the end all be all of subs. Warrior and thief subs perform better. So uhm, yeah, I'm leveling warrior because the allure of sneak/trick isn't enough for me yet. I'd rather have double attack, berserk, and eventually war cry.

Seijuro_Hiko_IX
February 28th, 2004, 10:03 PM
Samurai is the best ever! Well actually I am not subbing it because I always want it to be my main. I probably wouldn't sub it anyway... Seems like its much better as a main job anyway.

Oh yeah, my guide says that I'm supposed to get an additional Store TP at level 30. I'm 33 and I only have 1 Store TP.

Michael
February 29th, 2004, 04:21 AM
You don't more than one level of it, it stacks on top of itself. Store TP at 10 = +1%, Store TP at 30 = +2% (if I'm not mistaken, each level is +1%), 50 = +3%.

Just like how I had three Martial Arts skills by level 30 on my monk, but there's only one listed. It's annoying, and I wish they'd put somewhere off to the side something like "Lv. 2" so you could tell without a guide, but they're there. =p

Well I hope thats true. That would certainly be useful.

But I'm loving SAM more and more. I'm at the point where I can skill chain with two different players in the same battle one right after another and possibly even a 3rd time on my own. And its actually a lot of fun. Much more fun than just Provoking and watching my life go down and hopfully up all battle.

Michael
March 3rd, 2004, 07:05 PM
Yeah, I can imagine sam being a lot of fun, but taking a bit of focus.

Lately I've been catching my warrior up and screwing around. Did Rank 4 for a friend, gotta take Merc on Rank 4 here soon too. Got Merc Dragoon flag, personally killing that dragon this time rather than watching a level 70 do it ruled.

20/10 war/nin right now, fooling around with dual wield and carrying my shihei's in preparations for the moment I ding 24. It shall be glorious. Problem is, my friend wants me to wait for her, not sure if I have the patience to just yet. ;p

Seijuro_Hiko_IX
March 3rd, 2004, 09:43 PM
That is the thing about SAM. With War, I just hit auto attack and watched until the monster decided it didn't hate me anymore, then I would provoke. Soloing was even more boring. I just hit auto attack and watch until one of us was dead. Maybe a defender or berserk was thrown in there, but other than that, thats all I ever did as a WAR. I never said I was a great WAR, but I never had any complaints and I got parties really easily when I was a WAR. But I grew very sick of it.

But with SAM I have to pay constant attention. I know other jobs have to pay even more attention, like WHM for example, but it was a slight change from what I was used to with playing WAR, and a little of THF and MNK. I'm always watching time cooldown timers on 3 different abilities (Third Eye, Berserk, Meditate), I'm always watching my TP, reporting my TP, and watching the log window (which gets very hard in a busy place) for updates from other player's TP and such, and when ready I skill chain with them, then go back to checking my cool down timers. All while doing the regular monitering of the enemy, party, and personal status. Also, being a SAM, everyone asks me to come up with the skill chains, so I've been learning my way around the SC chart too. Not that hard to read, I just never had to pay much attention to it before since someone else always had a chain ready.

But doing all of this makes the battles interesting, and most importantly of all, I finaly have a sense of purpose. As a WAR, it wasn't rare at all for there to be more than one of us in the party, and it seemed I was always the back up tank, or not even that when there were 3 or even 4 of us. So I would kind of feel like I wasn't really doing anything, I mean WAR aren't exactly heavy hitters or anything. But thats not the case anymore. I want to feel like I contribute to my parties, and with SAM I do.

Michael
March 4th, 2004, 11:11 AM
Yeah, war is boring unless you sub ninja at 24. After that, the class takes a lot of focus, you'll always be the main tank, and you'll have plenty of things to play with.

As for watching to battle window, you might want to mess with the chat filter settings. Personally, I have all abilities, spells, and damage turned off for anyone not in my party or alliance. I couldn't care less if a thief in a different group ten feet away scratched a mob for 10 damage. Like wise, I couldn't care if he dodged, parried, or had a bomb thrown at him. Even with the filters off, things can get sort of hectic. The fix for this though, set your party chat filter to "hold." When text scrolls too fast, your text window will split into two, and party chat will be held on the screen a little longer. It's quite nice. Beats me hitting R>Enter everytime someone says something, just to make sure I don't miss it.

I just got samurai to 30. I didn't get to mess with Meditate because I was the last to level, and everyone wanted to stop at about ~400xp before I leveled. Managed to get them to stay to level me, hit every ability I could and left.

I'm supposed to be leveling warrior with my friend, so I'm going to try and wait for her. In the mean time, I'm leveling thief to 30 now, unless I can get a group for dragoon through friends. ;p

Well, I've been out of the loop for a while now. Being in Kuwait doesnt help much. I plugged my Laptop at an internet cafe and downloaded the latest ver of POL, however the update for FFXI was estimating at a whooping 3 hrs. I think it may be the connection, but this net cafe is using high speed access. So I am kinda assed out right now when it comes to playing it. I am trying to find an alternative: I've been talking to the people that I work with, especially the ones that owns a laptop. We were thinking about getting Satt DSL and just share the cost (Dinars). I have yet to find a provider in Kuwait. I am hoping to find one and get a price on it so we can get it started. So whats new in this thread? I see that its still going strong.

Hiko,
I am glad that you're making a lot of progress with your character. You started right after I did and you've already reached a better status than I have, congrats. I wish I was somewhat closer to a Samurai. But being away from home kinda deters me from doing so. Good luck!

Michael,

Last time I read, it seemed that you didnt want to play for a while? Change your mind? Well either way this thread needs a few expert to get the ones who are just starting to get some knowledge from this board.

Scarface,

You a$$wipe! you're the jacka$$ that hell didnt want to spawn. I hope you've suffered many deaths from Orcs and whatnot! go to hell. HAHAHAHAAA! Just kidding! Suikoden IV is gonna rock and its gonna take you away from FFXI for a while..well who knows.

Anyway, even though I already got the game on my laptop, I was wondering if I should still get the HDD. Its coming out late this month correct? I should order it and get it sent here.

So for all you lucky folks who gets to play this game remember; those always a poor schmoe (me) who cant play it. So enjoy every bit moment of it, otay?

Heh. Since the game's been out I've taken two "extended breaks," one for two weeks, another for two and a half weeks. Even during my breaks I actively posted here. Each time I've come back and tried taking the game a little less hardcore to maintain interest. It's starting to fade out again, and I haven't even been hardcore. I actually found the patience to level a tradeskill (cooking) to 20. I have so much Selbina Butter right now I want to cry. Earlier today I got half way through 21 on warrior, and just totally lost interest-- been watching TV since, haha. Though I'd say this current "burnout" isn't necessarily the game, I have some things in real live that need resolved.

I need to get dragoon to at least 60 and full AF, that's a primary goal, but I dunno, I want to level warrior to at least 25 before I do. Would be nice to get 30. I've been having ideas of leveling another job, not sure what though. I loved monk, but I've also considered dark knight. The conflict comes in I think my character would make a terrible looking monk, especially considering I hate the original Monk AF (look at me, I've dedicated my life to body and spirit, but I'm not above parading around in GOLD EMBROIDERED SILK~!!1), and I have an obsession with how absolutely freaking awesome Darksteel Armor looks. Shame Darksteel is 65, that would take a loooong time.

Another thing is elvaan is starting to piss me off. Anything that requires two hands, they hold the exact same way (except samurai). I sort of want to level staff just to do it once I get to 60 and can use a Battle Staff. But of course, elvaan hold that the same way they hold a lance... and a scythe... and a great axe. kthx squenix. I love how elvaan hold heavy weapons all the same, but other races actually have different stances for great axe, polearm, and scythe.

I love the elvaan hand to hand and great katana-- that's about it. The sword(club/axe) stance only works for a red mage with a rapier. Great sword is just generally terrible, same with polearm, scythe, and great axe. Though male scythe is a hell of a lot better than female. Dual wield is so-so. It depends on the weapons you're using. It's not like the other races are much better, though, haha.

And I'm also going to recommend playing anything other than a tarutaru. I hate tarutaru so much it hurts. I'm trying to save the world, and here I have to babysit a two year old child. Cute? No. Aesthetically annoying enough to shoot devs in the head? Yes.

Level 22 Fishing here. :) The only real way to make extra gil through fishing is to raise Cooking at the same time. I'd do that, but I supply fish to the cooks in my Linkshell, who in turn supply me with pies and drinks.

I absolutely LOVE being a white mage. ^^ I plan to go BRD/WHM eventually (still tied down with class deadlines), but being a WHM is still incredibly fun. Probably for the same reason as Hiko; I'm always doing something. I can -not- look away for a second.. mages in my current area seem to be rare because they level so quickly as demand for them is high. I get like 5 PT invites once I raise my flag. O_O And in the actual groups, I have to adapt different tactics for different jobs. I try not to get into a PT without a Paladin. They are gorgeous at defense and controlling hate. I adore Bards because downtimes goes pppft!. Cast debuffs if we don't have a RDM, make sure to keep Regen on the PLD/Tanker, NEVER heal other mages unless they fall really low
(most prefer to Cure themselves, and they're going to rest to restore MP either way. On a side note: I currently hate Taru mages. One hit, and they're in the orange. 2 hits, and it's dead, X___X I hate abusive nuking Taru BLM with a passion, especially.), watch out for status effects, heal those ASAP without losing track of the meleers health.. ^_^ I simply love it. With Bard, I'll be able to take care of meleers and mage separately.

*happy*

Any of you mages too? I'm feeling left out. XD I dont know why people dont choose mages.. they're so much fun.

About the different stances: I agree, some look damn cool. But because I pay attention mainly to casters.. though Elvaan BLM isn't the wisest choice, I LOVE how they cast! ^^

Could always do the more than typical silk thread farming. On Odin a stack of silk thread = 9,000G.

I've moved up to Black Tiger Fangs myself. Only 8400G/stack, but it's a quest, so I get fame, and I cut out the whole Auction House thing.

A 45 friend has problems farming tigers though, so uh, don't think about doing them. Just go farm Canyon Crawlers in Tahrongi.

For the first time since I hit level 30 with my Warrior I almost feel like I'm getting somewhere. I finaly hit level 40 tonight with my Samurai. I didn't get any abilities or anything, it really isn't a big landmark or anything, I just feel like maybe I can actually press on an get somewhere now. I'm trying to stay focused and gain at least one level everyday. But that really isn't up to me... I need to find a great party that actually lasts... And with that obsticle, lets see how long my focus lasts.

I had a really interesting party tonight. I was in a party with a whm and a pld finaly for the first time during the night. It was nice, and we had little trouble killing the Nest Beetles. But then they both had to leave at the same time. So our party was without the 2 most important jobs in the game. We then got a replacement for both, and guess what they were.... 2 thieves. Yup, instead of a whm and a pld, we got 2 thievs. But... You know what? That party owned more than any party I've had in the Crawler's Nest so far. Our healing had to be done by a RDM and a BLM with WHM sub, but it was fine because we slaughtered those beetles before they could do much damage. We were chaining Nest beetles with a party of 37-40 with no whm or tank of any kind. And I'd like to think that it was because of my ability to accumulate TP at a awesome rate.

What we did was wait until a thf had enough TP for a weapon skill, then I would Provoke and do Tachi:Enpi, then they would Sneak+Trick+Viper Bite and the BLM and RDM would both Burst. Then I would Meditate and the other theif would do the same thing. The beetles would then be either dead, or have a shred of life left. And there was hardly any downtime since not much MP was used. Our total damage output for each skill chain+magic burst was averaging at about 700-800. Doing that twice each battle made for very quick fights. It was awesome.

Michael
March 9th, 2004, 08:52 AM
That is how the samurai shines, but not necessarily you as the backbone. It helped, with the extra bursts, and your own damage, however, the thieves were the backbone of that. The thieves alone with fuidama viper bite more than likely accounted for 50% of the damage alone, no skillchain damage, no magic bursts. It's still too early for the samurai's abilities to form a backbone like this. I'm not trying to get you down, I'm being realistic here. It's simply your level-- wait. Wait until ancient magics. You think enpi > fuidama viper bite with some mediocre spells were tossed in was great-- just wait until you can TP on demand for a burst with Freeze. This is where you'll start to shine. 800 dmg total? Freeze does 1000 on it's own. Not including your enpi, not including the fuidama viper bite. When I've seen Freeze land without a burst, even on beetles, it did so-so damage, but bursted, it is a power house. Now, if you could keep that up so a freeze burst was every fight, even every other fight, you would be loved for what you can do.

It's just that as a dragoon, I have my own tricks for TP. I essentially have the power of meditate. Penta returns 60%. Then I jump twice, 84%, I hit two more times, I've got full TP again. In a typical fight, even without meditate, I can ws 3 times, sometimes more. This is the "flaw" in the samurai job. It's performance is based entirely off of a party's formation. While a party could succeed with a samurai as a standard damage source (think dark knight, dragoon, great axe warrior), you have much more potential taking a true damage class. Given, yeah, a samurai can penta spam too, but they fall short of dragoon due to weaponry. I have a 74dmg lance at my level, the best you'd more than likely have would be 58dmg. Thus, you take a samurai in a less physical group formation, such as when fighting highly resistant mobs. The problem is, NA don't see this game as a teamwork help eachother out a safe party is a good party-- NA see this as they see everything else, kick the crap out of things, hit hard. Samurai is overlooked for this reason. This is also why if you do any /sea all <damage melee class here> they rarely have samurai sub. The trade for one extra WS in a fight isn't worth the security in knowing you just might save your black mage's life. Besides, double attack can make up for meditate in a penta thrust or a guillotine pretty quickly. Double Attack can fire off in a ws, so you might get 6 hits from a penta~.

Honestly it's depressing. Samurai has a lot of potential in groups, but it's rarely exploited, because people want a pure source of damage. Dark Knights and Dragoons can bring that damage on their own-- a samurai is a team player, he relies on his team-- people don't like that.

<<<<<<<<<< Lv 3 fishing right now

Bamboo will break easily, but it's still alright for leveling. For leveling easiest early, I totally recommend worms in freshwater and a composite rod until you're around lvl 5. Then you can start using a Mithran rod and insect balls. Both rods are a little pricey, but they don't break and are worth the investment. (You will also occasionally lose fish because of their smaller size, but I personally find it not as bad as breaking a 3-4k Glass or Carbon rod for catching larger items that break those rods) Power level on insect balls and catching moat carp until you hit level 11 fishing. Then, power level to lvl 20 in East Ronfaure on the Fly Lure and Mithran rod for Cheval Salmon. Cheval Salmon don't sell very well, but it's the easiest way to level to 20. You stop leveling your fishing skill with moat carp at lvl 11, stupid cap. X_X After that I went to various fishing areas and somehow got to 22 by experimenting. O_o Also, invest in a Sabiki rig.. when you're out in salt water, you can easily get several stacks of 'cheap' fish like sardines (good for Windurst fame) and Quus, which sell quickly at 1k a stack. Might not sound that good early on, but considering you can catch up to 3 fish each time, pretty easily.. the gil adds up. I haven't really fished more after that.. I want to work on BRD soon, so leveling my WHM to 30 is occupying me :P

Once you're a higher lvl, you will catch stacks of moat carp (4k each) easily. ^^ I just relax in San and do this for fast gil. Later, fish like eel will get you more gil.

For cooking.. fish can be used for small meals. Mainly melee stuff. I'm not personally familiar, because like I said, I dont' cook. :P My friend sells what he cooks from my fish in the AH, and it goes quickly. Like I said, if you catch your own fish, you already own the supplies for cooking and don't need to spend too much extra gil getting cooking supplies from the AH.

I wasn't trying to say I was doing the most damage, my damage was usually pretty bad for some reason. Tachi: Enpi must not hurt beetles very much or something. I was just saying that my ability to start two seperate Skill chains + sneak and trick + Magic burst made all that damage possible twice each battle. With out the skill chain, the sneak + tricks were doing about 250-300. With my Enpi to start the chain we did my initial 100, then Sneak+trick's 300, the skill chain's 200, then both the RDM and BLM's bursts for 50 and 200+ repectively.

Granted it is totally possible to do that anyway, we did have a DRK who was just doing his own thing, but twice each battle would be more difficult. With me there all I had to do was let a thf tell me when he was ready, then go, then meditate and do it again when the other thf was ready.

However things like that rarely happen. As you said, most of the English speaking people I party with don't try to set things like that up. Actually, I rarely even see any thievs at this level. Most of the people I see now are ALL Dark Knights. I had a party in the Nest that had 3 DRK's in it, and there were 2 other DRKs LFG at the time too. I have to always get people to chain with me. And then the other people who aren't chaining always decide to throw their weapon skill in the middle of our chain. I always have to explain to most people that I can chain with 2 of them each fight, so we need to do that. It's surprising that at this level people still don't get that FFXI is all about teamwork.

Oh, and regarding polearm... I just don't like it! I've been keeping it capped every level, and I hate every second it takes to do so. It's usually only about 4 levels lower than my katana, but I miss so much, it does weak damage, and the weapon skills usually hit for much less than my katana ones. Plus I can't even get Penta Thrust until I am level 51, so I can't even use it until I do this level 50 cap quest thing I've heard about. In a party last night, when I got invited I was leveling my polearm. Once it capped, and I switched back to katana, everyone in my party commented on how much of a difference I was making then. Its level 117 now, but I'm thinking of just not using it anymore.

Michael

Uhm, Penta Thrust is the sole reason for using polearm in the first place, heh. You may not be able to use it until 51, but it's worth it if you want to output a ton of damage.

At 50 you'll get another Store TP, a five hit penta would yield more than 70%, even without meditating, you're well on your way to hitting it again-- and again-- and again. ;p Your polearm damage base might be a little lower, but you'll make up for it. Problem is, you're going to start missing, regardless of weapon, a lot. Given I'm an elvaan, but I also have +13 dex, +10 accuracy, and my dragoon Lv30 Accuracy Bonus trait, and I still miss a lot. From what I understand, by 60 without around a 25 point bonus to accuracy (as a two handed damage output job), you're just going to miss way too much. Once I get to 60 that won't be too hard to come up with. ~200,000G for merman's gorget and my Lv60 lance would bring me up to 22. I figure with my Dragoon accuracy, I can get by without the other 3 points. However, I still do intend to get dual sniper rings and an assault earring, which would push my accuracy up to 34 plus my bonus.

Warrior 26 /cheer. Almost done. And dual wield + double attack is so much fun. It's like a flurry of firey fire sword fury! Fear my alliteration, like whoa.

Okay, I hate to ask, but can someone give me a rundown on gameplay? I've heard plenty of good things here, but the guy at EB Games said it was a piece of fetid crap, in terms of gameplay. Now, I trust his opinion to a good extent, but I trust you guys' too, so please, be objective and explain the battle system...
I also need to know more about this worldpass system. I'm struggling between upgrading my video card and getting the PS2 version, so I need information.

Well, I needed cash fast, so I had to sell my polearm. It got me 16k in a few minutes so I wasn't upset about it. Now I have a totally kick *** Jujitsu Gi instead. +4 to accuracy for only 60k at level 40 isn't too shabby. It was the only one in the AH too. The AH is all out of Jujitsu Sitabakis though, which give +1 to dex. I need one of those too, becuase I look silly with my awesome looking gi and Centurian pants and boots. I'd like something to replace that Visor too.... but what?

Gameplay.. I'm not the best at describing this >_>; You select the monster, and begin attacking. Melee characters can chain their weapon skills to do extra damage. Different jobs have to work together, just like in a normal FFXI game. I think the gameplay is fine.. the dependency of working with characters is a pain to some, until they get Beastmaster and can solo.

How the Worldpass Works:

Your friend has to be in the server you want to be in. They go to an NPC, and buy the Wordpass, and are given a code. Your friend writes down the code, gives it to you, and when you're creating your shiny new character, type in the name of the server and the Worldpass code to get it. :) It's that easy.

Well I bought the composite rod right afer by bamboo broke. ^_^

But it's still pretty hard to catch fish. Keep losing my catch. -o-;

There is about 700 posts and i didn't feel like looking threw them. So I'm going to ask a question that must have been asked already. Do they charge you per month to play or a flat fee to play?

Fukki, what level, and WHAT are you trying to catch? O_O Mithra doesn't break at all on lower level fish or rusted gear, which is why I recommended.. which larger fish are you trying to catch? Which bait are you using??

Haha actually I have no idea what or where I'm supposed to be fishing =P I carry a fishing rod around with me for those times when I'm near water and feel like fishing for a few rounds. Maybe that's why I broke so many ^^;;; I remember I broke 2 of those rods in Sando haha (fish too big maybe -o-; ). Fishing bait, um, I think I used insect balls.

All jokes aside there is something that has been bugging me.....

What kind of special server/game events does ffxi have? Or do they have any at all? But if they do what where some of the more recent ones and can you give a brief description?

ahhhh can't wait....but what's worse I still can't decide what class I should start with.....oh well.

The events thus far have been so-so.

When the game first came out there was a Halloween event where certain NPCs in cities were turned into undead type mobs, and other non-aggressive undead would wander around the towns saying "Trick or Treat." If you gave them items they'd give you items, sometimes a jack-o-lantern helmet and a bat staff.

For Christmas they had terrible looking decorations all over the trees in the major cities. New Years had trees in various zones, it took A LOT of fire power to take them down, but after clearing all of the trees a teleport system was unlocked on the server through outposts. Chinese New Year had a bunch of monkeys running around named Mama Monkey Papa Monkey, See-no-Evil, Speak-no-Evil, and Hear-no-Evil. You could give them items and they'd give you a random 30 second buff.

Most "events" are just decor, the monkeys, the christmas decorations. NPCs turning into undead, for Hina Matsuri flowers were all over the towns and like, picnic blankets and food standish things and stuff.

I've yet to run into a "active" event of sorts. I dunno, even though the EverQuest events were very few and far between, they were a lot of fun when they were up-- there was just that much more to them.

Yaay. 3800 from 55 and I got my AF Boots.

So easy too, the very first coffer spawn I checked was up... I bought two stacks of silent oils in preparation, I used three. I have plenty for when I have to open my other coffers at least, yaay.

I think tomorrow I'm going to try and open my Ifrit's Cauldron coffer for my AF Body. Might not be equipable until 58, but it'll be nice to have just waiting for me. I still need to get my The Boyohada Tree key, but after that, it's just a matter of openning coffer, killing Dark Spark, finishing quest, then accepting AF3 helm quest, openning coffer in Kuftal (got key today) finishing quest, bam-- full AF. :D

[no new posts, so I'll just edit this one]
I painlessly grabbed my AF body today before maintainence. In and out, no deaths, didn't even have to make more than one sweep to the coffer areas. The last couple days have been quite lucky for me, heh. Had 7 chest keys drop in a two hour period or so in Shakhrami during Mithra week, got a key drop for Ordelle's for my own RSE on the second kill (none of this with thief sub, drg/war all the way). If I wasn't so tired I would have gone for the other two pieces last night. Both my AF boots and Body have been totally painless. I'm only missing one AF key now for my Lv56 Gloves. As soon as my Leaping Boots sell I'll have my first Sniper's Ring, then I'll grind to ~58 and farm gil in between groups. As soon as I can I'll be grabbing a second Sniper's Ring, a Merman's Gorget, and a Valkyrie Mask (given AF helm won't help me much without whm sub...+7atk is hard to pass up ;p). Beyond those items, at 60 my +7accuracy lance, an Amemit Mantle for some more +attack, and an Assault Earring to reinforce my accuracy (36total plus dragoon bonus should be enough >_>)

Um... Well I got Rank 4 and I hit 42 last night. Other than that, nothing new to report. I did some reading on a few of my AF quests and they sound difficult. Except my AF2 which sounds totally freaking impossible. I bought a Jujitsu Gi, and since it gives me +4 to accuracy, I don't think I want to give it up anytime soon. Honestly, I believe that that boost to accuracy is far more useful than any amount of defense. Until I get into one of those parties that make me tank since no one else is available, that is...

Yes, have fun going to Labyrinth of Onzozo to fight that NM. But I dunno, most samurai get it done, I'm sure you could find the help or find another samurai that could find help.

And accuracy is king. Especially for a slow two handed weapon class. As I (should have) stated before, a minimum bonus of 25 raw accuracy is a very very good goal to have by 60. Life belt, Sniper's rings, and a Merman's gorget will have you covered (if SAM can wear the gorget. ;p)
