YAY! ^____^ I got it installllled! I just need an Odin WP, and I'm set. :) *so happy* I almost hugged the Dell delivery man. God, this game is gorgeous. &_& I lurked on Fairy for a little while to see what it was like playing on my own instead of watching my friend play, but deleted my chara so I can wait to get on Odin.

I know what you meant. =P I just didn't know when you planned on doing the quest. I have no reason to kill it myself. I'm a WHM, and I don't plan on changing. :)

Uhm, if you need a WP to Odin, I could look into getting one. But uh, you could also just try rerolling characters until you got on the server. I went insane and started over, so I have a 10 warrior now. Granted, I didn't delete my other character, and probably won't for a long time to come. ;p

Everyone say hello to my sexy Hume, Rinlocke! XD
Currently lvl 4 WHM (I spend more time exploring than leveling ^^; ), resident of Bastok, having a great time on the Odin server. :P
I -adore- being WHM, I randomly heal warriors and they're super nice and bow. *_* Then again, I only cure the really sexy beginning warriors. *sweatdrops* I get stares when I blush around them. XD But I like randomly going out and helping people.. I prefer doing that then trying to be macho and strong. ;)

No no, I mean I'll help others kill it, but I have no reason to get the dragoon flag, so I'm not going to do the quest part. If they need help passing the mining part I'll help but I'm not gonna do the mining myself.
No reason for me to. =P Besides I like DRK better. If I ever switch classes for fun I'll go to that.

Windurst is adorable and gorgeous at the same time! Unfortune-wortunetly, you find yourself talking-walking like the cutaru Tarutaru. X_X

I hate Windurst so much. hehe
The layout is horrible, everything is so far apart, and I cannot stand the cutsey speech of tarus.
That place is almost hell to me.

One day I'm going to find the designer who's responisble for Tarutaru, and I'm going to tackle them and stab them in the face in an angry hate-filled rage of gore. It'll be sweet.
Oh, and I'm going to stab the people who made all the Christmas decorations... they're so freaking terrible looking.

I refer to them as demons, and it catches on quick. I had a large portion of bastok (minus the people who were playing tarus) calling them demons one day.

Butaru Tarutaru are cutaru! I really love them. :P They are so freaking adorable. I think the Bastok Fountain's Christmas decorations are nice. *_* Maybe I'm biased. Windurst's just look really tacky. And holy crap, WHM are amazingly hard to lvl up in the beginning. X_X Everything keeps chasing me.. and maiming me.. argh.

Hullo all......
You know I wanted to get FFXI for the PC but eh without buying a new one I'll have to pass......
But after keeping up with the game for a bit.....
I think I may pass on the PS2 version as well......
Do you think it will be mass chaos when the PS2 version drops? So many lvl 1s like me running around......
I would hate to get the game and get yelled at everyday because I am trying to learn the game and don't have the skills that some other uber player has.
PC gamers are ok I guess but there will be a mass exodus of peeps from EQOA to FFXI....a lot of good players, a lot of bad ones.
I dunno I guess I am afraid of not having fun with the game due to ill nOOb treatment from higher ups.
Well will it be like that or am I wrong?
cyber assassin
December 21st, 2003, 09:48 AM
yes you are wrong seeing as how there wasnt "mass chaos" when the american version came out for the pc so i dont think it would happen when the ps2 version comes out

I hate starting MMORPGs late lol....in most games people treat you like sh-t if you just ask them a question....
I dunno I think I am just making too much out of it

i joined late and nobody ever treated anyone bad...
if i called for help when things got bad someone usually came to help...
right now whenever someone ask for some help or i see someone being chased by an agro monster i pull it away from them...

Well thats going to be me. Is that ok? I mean I don't want to piss anyone off, but I really don't have any choice but to start at level 1, and I've been reading up on FFXI as much as I can to try and cut down my ignorance when I final do play, but there is only so much I can learn without just getting in there and playing.

Oh yeah man, it's totally okay. You have to be a newbie some time. Just don't be afraid to ask people questions. The more you learn the better of a player you become.
I did the same thing right before I began playing, and I'll be honest I did a lot of research into the things that weren't important. hehe.
Can't wait to meet up with ya in game. :)

edit:
More FFXI fun
Since the decoration of the three nations for the holiday season, the trees around town have attracted record crowds. Vana'diel appears to be shaded by the twin branches of peace and harmony...
However, according to the latest breaking news, the trees donated to each nation of Vana'diel last year by Windurst's Rhinostery are running amok and causing all sorts of havoc!
"Disposing of those trees should have been mere routine,
but they woke from their stasis, and boy, are they mean!
Talk to a moogle to lend us a hand,
and battle the menace that threatens the land.
More than ten of them are on the rampage, I fear!
These "Twinkling Treants" are ruining the New Year!"
says a representative of the Rhinostery.
Twinkling Treant sightings continue to pour in from all over the world. Find out more about the arboreal situation from your local Moogles and help cut down these bothersome botanical beasts!
[Participation Details:]
- The right to participate in this event can be acquired from Moogles dispatched to various areas throughout the nations.
- This right will become invalid after a certain amount of time.
It can also be forfeited by speaking to one of these Moogles again.
- A level restriction will be imposed while participating in the event. The level restriction differs between regions and, if you are equipped with items higher than the level restriction, they will automatically be unequipped.
- If you are defeated by a Twinkling Treant you will only lose experience points if you were not participating in the event. But be warned, experience points will be lost as usual if you are defeated by monsters unrelated to this event.
- Assuming they meet the necessary requirements, other players, parties, and alliances will be able to attack any Twinkling Treant you are engaging without being asked for help. These treants do not drop items.
- Defeat all the Twinkling Treants to receive a special surprise!
*This event is currently underway.

GimpyBoy
December 26th, 2003, 11:00 AM
They are unclaimable enemies, and you have to be in a quest to fight them. During the quest it automatically lowers your level to 20.
So you could have fought it. ;) Although it takes an ungodly number of people fighting it for many hours to kill it.

Anyway, I will also be picking up Call Of Duty to mess around with today.
When i get ff11 either tommarow/monday i will tell you guys... you gotta get me onto Leviathan... Not sure how this world pass thing works? eh whatever can;t wait to be an Elvaan Red Mage.

I haven't gotten around to playing it yet, but I seriously doubt that I'm going to want to as it is. Don't get me wrong, it looks like it could very well be the best MMORPG on the market, but... Me and my brother only get to play on certain days at certain times, and he can be a wicked brat about letting me play, even though, technically, It's my game and I'm 4 years older. Plus, my dad set up the account, meaning he chose the e-mail address name (a ghei one, I assure you), he made the first character and HE is going to impede on our playing time. Now, I used to own Anarchy Online, and I would've kept playing it if it wasn't for my damn brother. Now I have to deal with my dad AND him. I don't think I'm going to be playing it for very long-I can't really explain the vexxing frustration that I have to go through on a daily basis with these two. Plus, my mom makes all the rules, even thoughI bought the game and the money each month comes out of my pay. And yes, I'm paying for my character, my dad's AND my brother's!!! I'm so sick of this crap, but my computer is too slow to run any of these games, so I have to use the Dell in the living room. This whole situation is pissin' me off. Any suggestions...?:complain:

On a side note, I just have to say: Holy Christ, this game Is HUGE!! At about level 12 you should try to find a partner to go level in the PB mines with.
Or you can head to the dunes and try your luck there taking on the lizards with a group.

I'm only a Lv.2 thf, but then again I don't get much time to play. Meh. I normally play on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. I started in Bastok, and I've been hanging out around the drawbridge lately, waiting for other low-level players to team up with to show up. It gets boring killing hornets and worms by myself. -o-; One question: the airship that is constantly going through there-can you actually board that to get to different places?
GimpyBoy
December 29th, 2003, 07:07 AM
Yes, but not for a long time. You have to get to rank 5, or pay an insane amount of gil.
Also, know that you shouldn't party with anyone until around level 8-10. And at that low of a level it's best to only go out as partners.
You should be able to get to level 6 in a single night. :)

Don't go to the Pal mines, they suck for exp............
lv 12 go to the highlands, see how well you do against the lizards there, see if you can fiond a decent team(albiet as hard as that is these days) and even on that low of a level with a full group, you can safely hunt in the dunes, just don't wander in too far and stay by the entrance just in case you have to zone.
and I'm still on rank 3 as well...............I need to upgrade!
GimpyBoy

Pal Mines does not suck for exp if you only have two members. Add in a third and it sucks.
I levelled to 16 in the mines easily with my friend who was a war fighting the onyx and greater quads.

Actually I had to go to the Pal Mines anyway to do the last Rank 1 Mission, so I spent a lot of time in there fighting fairly weak Quadav's until I stopped to rest for a bit and some people who were a party stopped and asked me if I wanted to join. I accepted, and I was finaly in my first party. It was fun, but a lot different than soloing, I really need to get used to it, plus we didn't have a healer.

Wee. I should have Rank 5 within a couple of weeks. I would already have it if I didn't go do that 'real life' thing when my LS did the first run for it.
Aside from that, I took a two and a half week break. Came back, and have been somewhat productive in wasting time. If there is such a thing.
Got monk to 31 while helping friends get 30. Got Samurai to 28 doing the same (separate groups, heh). Leveled Dark Knight to 10 just because. Drain is fun. The Drain quest, however, was not. I turned in 94 bat wings before that punk would even give me the quest. I got ninja to 10. Dual wield is fun, even though nothing technically special (at base level, anyway). I unlocked Dragoon about half an hour ago, and made 4 in literally 15 minutes. Wee. The extra damage is sick for newbie levels. And everyone must love Cerulean, for he is cute and full of doom. Going to do Paladin Quest tomorrow afternoon. After Paladin, Beastmaster, Bard, and Summoner will be the only classes I haven't unlocked. I don't care about Summoner at all. I may eventually do the other two though, both should be easy, save the Kraken that likes to hang out at the bst flower.
Anyway, I need sleep now.

After the dunes go to Quifim till level 30.

December 31st, 2003, 01:31 AM
Booo, don't do 27+ in Qufim. Or in Batallia. Or anywhere around Jeuno for that matter. Get your Kazham Air Pass. a) you'll need it anyway if you want ninja or samurai b) the area seriously needs more people. It's awesome exp easily up through 32. Grouping from 26~29ish in Yuhtunga Jungle, and 29~32ish in Yhoator Jungle. Hard to find a group there sometimes, but when you do, weeeee.
To get the pass you have to travel to dungeons of each nation.
Windurst: Giddeus. Kill Yagudo Votary, Theogurists, Priests for a Giddeus Chest Key
Bastok: Palborough Mines. Kill Old, Brass, Copper Quadavs for a Palborough Mines Chest Key
San d'Oria: Yugrott Grotto/Fort Ghelsba. Kill Orcish Fighters, Cursemakers, Serjeants for a Fort Ghelsba Chest Key.
Take all three keys to the NPC in the Kazham Airship Port in Port Jeuno, and he'll give you the Kazham Airpass.
This airpass is not to be confused with the 500k/Rank 5 airpass. This pass only goes to Kazham and back. The two island continents are the Rise of the Zilart expansion areas (The other you run through Korroloka Tunnel to get to), so Elshimo got it's own airpass.
On a random note, yay for 11 dragoon. Jump + Dragoon Lv10 Attack Bonus + Wyvern = Oh my god I want to touch myself.

I'm assuming I should be fighting in groups all the time now, because at this point everything is either to weak to give me any exp, or way to strong for me to consistantly take down myself. I'm sick of dying and getting set back all the time while trying to fight in the stronger areas like the K-something Highlands... I just found out the hard way that the lizards there can turn you to stone. That really sucked.
So, with that being said, can some one give me a bit of advice on how exactly to go about getting in a group? I only know a few people from AN because I'm always solo in the game, and all those people are like way ahead of me and don't want to play with me ( :bawling: ). I turned my little seek party flag on, but no one seemed to care or notice.
I'm thinking about just switching to THF or MNK and starting to level that up for when I get to level 18 with my WAR, since I'm kinda tired of playing with my WAR at the moment.

December 31st, 2003, 04:25 AM
Well I'm biased Michael. I stay in that area because of the acrophies. =) I stilll need that ruby, so I'll be in Quif till I get it.
Also Hiko, tips for getting in groups.
1) Up to date armor. No one needs a tank that can't take damage.
2) Shout every once in a while. Level __ WAR looking for group. (Don't do this too much though, it'll make you look like a jerk. Just every once in a while)
3) Patience. Warriors aren't loved like the support classes or high damaging classes, but they are needed. So sit and wait, or try to form your own group with some of the other people around your level who are waiting. Those big groups you see will eventually need a warrior, especially if theirs is sucking, or has to log out.
4) Inititive. Don't be afraid to ask people if they want to group or if they are happy in their current group. I get tells like this all the time, and so long as the person sending me the tell is cordial about it, I'm nice back. I get warriors asking if I have an opening all the time, and I simply tell them that I'll alert them if I do.

I have a question regarding the Auction House. I'm really starting to get frustrated with it because anything that I have the requirements to use it won't let me bid on, and I can't figure out why. I'll look through the list of equipment and find something better then what I have, and that I can also use, and the item is highlighted in yellow and I can't select bid. But it's ONLY the items that I meet the reqirements to use. Does the game already hate me? First it won't let me find parties, now it won't let me bid on the stuff I want.
GimpyBoy
December 31st, 2003, 06:05 AM
When you look in the auction house you're going to see something like this.
Bone Armor 1
Lizard Jerkin
In this case even if you can use the Lizard Jerkin you cannot bid on it because there are none for sale.
It's yellow because you can use it, but that doesn't neccesarily mean someone is selling it.
Also I would suggest killing some goblins and getting conquest points, you can use those to buy level 10 armors and weapons off the guard. Legionaire stuff.

Reached level 17. I'm looking forward to 18 so that I can begin to level another job to use as my subjob. The 2 issues I'm having are deciding which job to sub for my WAR, and how to get ahold of the last item I need for the subjob quest.
I know I will use either a Monk or a Thief, just not sure which would be the most useful to me.
Oh, and while I'm at it, I'm wondering, if I ever manage to get that skull for the subjob quest... um, where exactly do I take them? What do I do with them exactly?
Michael
January 2nd, 2004, 01:31 AM
thief is generally useful for anyone who cares to camp/farm items. It's a great class to have access to.
However, for a base class level grind (ie, before you get any character to 30) the best warrior sub is monk. You'll get massive HP, as well as bonus str and vit, mainly. Also, once you switch back to warrior (I'd say get monk to 15, then switch to war/mnk), you'll also have counter at your disposal. Beyond level 25 with this, you'll have both double attack and counter attack, which is great for damage doom.
Seems most who stick with warrior end up subbing ninja or samurai for the most part. Samurai for supah TP and WS, Ninja for dual wield and/or Utsusemi/Blink. Very effective tanks, if you have the money.
15 drg~ I switched to sam/drg just to see what Jump would look like with a great katana. It was so worth killing that tiny mandragora, haha. Theoretically Korroloka Tunnel is a good place to level 15~20 when you don't have to worry about subjob and the like, so I ran there. At 5am no one was there, maybe when I wake up (given my completely screwed up sleep schedule now) I'll find people there. If not, I guess I could hit up Valkurm. Bleh. Whatever it takes to get the exp, I guess.
Going to have to finish leveling Samurai to 37 at same point. And warrior right now is only 10, when I get ~29ish with drg I'll probably do a five level grind with war, leave it at 15 until near 50, then level it hardcore to 25. Somewhere near 60 finish it off at 30. I can grind 30~37 whenever. 35 is War Cry, which would be worth it, but I'm not thinking I'll be hardcore grinding through the 70s very often/quickly. I definitely want to eventually have both at 37, and I want to maintain the option to sub either of them beyond 60. Sort of debated amoung NA players whether to do war or sam, most seem to think sam is the only way to go, but I'm thinking it looks good on paper, and applied, it's not so good. I mean, think about it, /sea all 60-75 drg, majority of them are warrior. Honestly, I think this is because of the warrior bonuses, as well as the fact that spamming penta thrust like crazy is sure to generate an insane amount of hate. Okay, yeah, you could do a ton of damage, but if the tank can't keep it off you, you're going to be taking a ton of damage too... and you're not a tank. Hyper Jump is only usable once every five minutes. With war sub, you get double attack, another passive damage bonus, as well as stuff like Berserk, Defensive (just in case, I guess), and War Cry. I'm not seeing myself using sam sub too often in normal exp group situations.
Anyway, sleep time!

Not an issue of timing. You can't use elemental damage weapon skills after Sneak Attack. That's why thieves switch out sword and dagger. Dagger is kinda suck until level 33 when you get Viper Bite.
I just did 15~19 today in Valkurm. I hate it so much, but I figured what the hell. It worked out well this time, not a single death, which is amazing. The first group I got when I was there sucked, but it lasted about 5 minutes before the rdm (only healer at the time, not a full group) started whining that we weren't pulling, then when we did, he went AFK unannounced. I just left and put Seek back up. I'm not going to waste my time with idiots. Probably just going to grind 20 tomorrow to finish of Valkurm, then go level my war to 15. Then it's back to drg to 30 in Qufim > Yuhtunga Jungle > Yhoator Jungle.

stick to chaining worms in Quifm at a level like 19, a party of 6 can collect tons of xp from them.
I know, finding a good party is hard though. I always get in good parties but then parents force me off... :(

I make Kain proud, and yet there are still Dragoons who just annoy me.........seems when you obtain that class people get the tendancy to become totals ***** and concieted pricks who think they are better than you or something. Makes no sense, seems certain people like to single themselves out.
lo, well next time I play I am off to hunt some leping lizzy's so I can get a pair of Leaping boots!

I made 23 today with dragoon, woo or something. I opted to start buying ahead for mah gear so I don't have to screw with it later. And that's when I realised my level 30 armor is going to cost me ~40k total. Woo. That's on top of what I just spent when I started dragoon. 10k for each of my rings, 10k for my necklace, 4k for my earrings. None of this I'll be selling anytime soon. Unless Deft Rings sort of fall in my lap before I can get Snipper Rings, my balance rings remain. My Spike Necklace shall remain as well, unless I can get my hands on a Peacock Charm. I'll replace my Beetle Earrings with Tortise Earrings at 45, if they don't cost too much. ...at least I never have to buy gloves until post-AF armor. Battle Glove doom. (And if you couldn't tell, I'm an Accuracy > Dexterity > Attack > Stength fiend-- with good reason).
Currently camping leeches in Pashhow for Beastman Blood. A full stack goes for 24,000 on Odin, and I still have ~30k worth of my Lv 30 armor to buy. I did get the body piece though, woo.
One of these days I need to camp Lizzy, but I'm sort of lazy. That and it'd be nice to have both Wide Scan and Treasure Hunter, but my thief is only 17 and my ranger only 8... so it'd probably be better to level one of those. I figure I'll have AF boots by the time I care enough to get Leaping Boots anyway. I'll surive without the extra 1.5 accuracy. ;p

It seemed like a good idea to me at the time, but for lv 30 I just am using my conquest points to suit up my lv 30 drg. I plan to spend any excess money on rings and earrings that boost dex.
Michael
January 5th, 2004, 11:45 PM
Heh, Rank 3/Lv 30 armor is what, 4000CP a pop? ;p That's a lot of CP~. I'd rather just use money, it's a hell of a lot easier to farm money than it is Conquest. I got my 12 beastman bloods in a few hours, and in a few more hours, they sold for 24,000G. However, I've made sure to have signet as much as possible, and in leveling dark knight 1~10, ninja 5~0, warrior 10~12, and dragoon from 1~24, I've only gotten ~8000CP. And there are some insanely elite items later on. The only level 30 conquest I plan on getting is the belt, which is +1 to almost all stats.
dex = crap. Well, comparitively. Focus on accuracy. Get Battle Gloves, if you don't have them already. Never take them off until AF gear. +3 accuracy is worth the difference in defense. 1 point of accuracy is equal to 2 points of dex. Just as 1 point of attack is equal to 2 points of str. You should go for the raw increases over the stat increases. Sadly there isn't much of an option for +acc and/or +dex gear, at least not until the extreme high end stuff. You won't actually find any dex/acc earrings, so you may as well just go for the +atk/-evd earrings. The level 21 ones are Beetle (2) , then there are Tortise at 45 (3) and Fang at 55 (4). Best rings, until Sniper would be Balance 2dex each. Sniper are a major upgrade. Go from 1acc on each ring to 5 on each. Or 7 if you're lucky enough to get the +1 rings. But I dunno, haha, if I got the +1s, it'd be hard not to sell them. I mean, It just seems so worth it to sell it off. Sure, I'd lose 2acc, but they sell for ~2,000,000G... regular Sniper Rings sell for 240,000. Wee.

The best you can afford really. Like I said, I'm decking myself out in Centurion Mail. but that's 10~12k per piece. You could try Brass Scale Mail, though it's level 27 armor, comparable to Chainmail, and looks like the level 10 armor. ;p

Yeah, I really hate being a Warrior..... You die and people are like "Heh, he died..." But the White Mage dies and everyone yells at me, the Warrior, who is ALREADY DEAD......
I'm thinking about taking my Monk to level 30 instead of my Warrior because I'm really getting sick of pulling and tanking, which usually leads to me dying because we never have a real white mage, usually just 2 red mages.
As you can tell today was a really sh*tty day for me. I quit playing because if I died one more time I would have leveled down. Everyone always wants to fight freaking Pugils because they know THEY aren't the ones who are going to be taking all it's attacks. Now I know why I never see any Paladins around... who the heck wants to be a tank forever? Level 30 can't come soon enough.

This just must not be AN's day............
I've been riding around on chocobos alot so my 2hr has been quite used up(used it like 3 times today) when I get my wyvern back in jueno the team that invites me(odd I never have trouble getting into parties) says they want to go after goblins......fine. I get to them they starting aggroing to gobs say it will be easy.
.............4 Bomb Tosses means one thing to Dragoons......death to their pets. So yeah I just used my 2hr because of the damn chocobo so now I have no pet. The n00bs start complaining about bad xp (mind you I like 50 to whatever in xp) so I leave them. Join another team finally get my 2hr back, and we go to the tower to kill Giants have 2 wars and one thf who can voke. They start fighting a giant...fine. Another spawn, so I take on that one(with the thfs help) kill it a bat spawns I start attacking it the thief is still with me watching my life drain away. Manage to almost kill the bastard before he uses jet stream on me......dead. The thief then says........
"Oh yeah I should have provoke it off of you, I really need to learn how provoke."
It was then which I left, for the night.
Seijuro_Hiko_IX
January 7th, 2004, 11:31 AM
And one more thing... I'm tired of being in a party where the only other non-casters are all thieves and they constantly bitch at me to provoke when I JUST FREAKING DID IT. They don't seem to understand that I have to wait 30 seconds between provokes. They just keep bitching at me because they are all totally useless when they enemy is actually paying attention to them.
Hmph, I never got yelled at when I was a Monk. You know I was really having some fun with my Monk, plus he looked so much cooler than the warrior does, especially in the new "Fine Jerkin" armor I just got. That stuff is so ugly.
But ANYWAY, I'm going to try this again, if things stay like this I am definatly going to quit using a Warrior.

I have to level warrior. And I hate it oh-so-much.
I spent half my time today getting from 12~14 on warrior. At 15 I can stop for a while and focus on Dragoon. I just want berserk. The other half of my time was a linkshell event. We went to Castle Oztroja to see how far we could get. We have a few high-50s, one 60, and the rest of us were 30~49. Full alliance of eighteen members. We made it to the top floor, but then had to evac out because our 60 drk was forced to be the tank for us (all of hour 50+ members are either drk or whm, ironic how that works out), and we ended up with two spawn adds, no way we could have taken them, as those birds on the top floor are VT+ to a 60...and drk can't really tank. So yeah, that ended abruptly. Apparently they had a depressing run for Rank 5 as well when they did it last month, so we didn't try it again.. >_<

I can't express the joy I feel at this game enough when I lose 880 exp. points and go back down to level f*cking 19. I'm so damn pissed off right now that I'm probably going to punch someone at work today... probably several times. Everything I spent the last 2 days doing is gone, wasted, and will take me forever to get back. I was on my way to Jeuno, and some goddamn gob beastmaster or something was sicking flys on me or something, I got right in front of the gates of Jeuno and I f*cking died. And would anyone raise me? F*ck no. I haven't had gamer rage this bad since the Atari days. This game is so damn frustrating, I can't do anything with out dying anymore.
Now I have to go back to the god-forsaken dunes and level back up until I'm freaking 20 again, and last time I tried that I died even more than I did today.

In everyone's opinion, what's the best solo class or class combo? I know the strategy guide says beastmaster, but I'd like to hear what other people think. Even though parties are necessary later on, I'm a bit of a solo player especially after hearing as many people as I do complain about retarded experiences with parties.

I have ninja for that! Even though I can't do that anymore with dragoon, since 2hr is wyvern. >_>
And yeah, the lance is high delay. But it's also 51 damage. You'll go from a 34/396 to a 51/492. That's better than a scythe. Dark Knights won't get a comparable scythe until 37, which is 53/480. Given, they have two damage bonuses compared to our one. But I'd rather have the level 30 accuracy bonus over the damage bonus.

Honestly I'd like to try pretty much all of the classes, except maybe Bard. As useful as they can be I just don't know if its my thing. I don't really think I like the idea of Beastmaster either. I'm afraid my charm will wear off of the monster right when I'm fighting something hard and then they will both start attacking me.
But I'll be taking a Samurai as far as it can go before I ever do anything else. But if I ever hit level cap with my Samurai then I think I'd like to try Dragoon next.

Then about when I'm a level 18 WHM, then i will get the subjob quest and start leveling a BM for a sub-job. Then when my WHM gets to level 30, I will do the SMN quest and become a SMN. The easiest way to get to Bastok or San from Win is taking the ferry at Mhaura to Selbina. That takes you to the outskirts of the dunes where you can go two paths.
To go to Bastok from there follow the Highlands, head south to N. Gusta, from there S. Gusta and you should see Bastok from S. Gusta.
From the dunes head North to La Thiene Plains, keeping north and travel in the area of W. Ronfaure, then San is just a stones throw away.

Most people gung ho either white mage or black mage for a reason. All of the avatar encounters are 60+, to actually contribute to the battle. Thus, it's sort of a waste to spend sixty levels with only Carbuncle. Okay, sure, you could sit around and beg people to help you with the fights so you can get them. Or you could actually build a very rewarding class into the 60s, get higher ranks which will help much in your summoner levels, getting the level cap quests out of the way while your at it so you don't have to slow down while leveling, and you'll have all of the summons from the start... not 6/7ths of the way through the game.
I hardcored a like 12~14 hour long group last night. Three of us stayed that entire time, and we had to replace the others once along the way. I went from 26 to more than halfway through 30 in that time. Awesome. Sort of. I got all my sleep, woke up, had seek on for about an hour and no groups, so uh, here I am, for now.
Only classes I plan to ever actually care about are dragoon, thief, sam, war. dragoon and thief leveled until it hurts, sam and war to 37.

Yes, you can obtain the summons without being a summoner. That's what I was saying. That's why people don't switch to summoner at 30, if they plan on leveling the class seriously. You can't actually HELP a group defeat the avatars until you're level 60. You don't have to be a summoner. Thus, people take them on for sport in the 60s, they get the summons, and if they want to, they level a summoner. 60 levels with Carbuncle alone would not only be terrible, but people would a) dislike you for being foolish/lazy and/or b) mock you constantly. The other summons offer great group benefit, as well as elemental options to take maximum advantage of each encounter.
Besides, who wouldn't want Garuda's group Blink? Blink = next attack does no damage... the spell activates on all players in the group with Garuda. Thus, everyone is essentially an utsusemi ninja~.

Uh. Haha. Don't know how much bullets are on your server, but you need them to use the gun. The low level bullets (Bronze) are terrible, and cost 5~6k a stack on Odin. I'm sure they aren't too much different on other servers. Also, I can tell you from personal experience, thieves are terrible with guns. Even at level 15 with 10 marksmanship, I couldn't hit anything my level, always missed. And even still, if I used Sharpshoot first then used Hot Shot WS (was Thief/Ranger) I still only did like 10dmg, if I hit. Heh. I seriously don't think marksmanship is worth raising as anything but a ranger, unless you've been keeping up with it with crossbows.
I know guns are badass, but throwing weapons are a better investment. Stuff like boomerangs and chakram.
But it's your character/money/choice. ;p

I keep hearing about these Kazahm keys and whatnot, but no one seems to want to tell me the details. What are they? Why do I want them? Where and how can I get them?
But anyway, I had a hella good session today. I leveled my WAR from 21 to 25 and I'm only 2k till 26. Of course I was out in Qufim from 10 AM till 3AM, but hey.... -o-;

You forgot, for some people, $500 for a new computer...
DAMMIT!
If you want the PS2 version, I haven't decided whether its worth it or not.
$50 for game (And Hard Drive, I believe)
$20 or so for a Network adapter (If you don't already have one)
I assume it's the same price, $12.95 per month.
Then of course you have to pay for internet access, but I heard it works okay on 56k... So, eh, I guess it's worth it on PS2.

yeah bullets are expensive like crazy...
i'm probably just gonna use crossbow for low lvl's as a ranger...
build up my skill and start buying them when the bullets are worth it...
as for the kazaam keys...
i got my first one yesterday...
at the grotto at fort ghelsba...
you need 3 keys...
one at giddeus, ghelsba, and polborough*sp?* mines...
when you get the 3 keys...
you get a pass to go to kazaam...
a place where you can lvl up really fast to 30...
right now im going for the giddeus key...

I know about the summons, isn't there spirits the summoner can use, like the ice spirit and dark spirit and such. I read something about them in the strategy guide. I want to know if you can get the spirits while not being a SMN

^_^ Summoners can summon spirits. Ice, Fire, Water, Earth, etc. I'm almost lvl 18.. got my subjob items, a nice person from Shadow Dragons Forum helped me. :P Unfortunately, traveling as a WHM is tough. I get a million invites to PTs, which is nice, but I'm TOO nice and cant turn down an invite (without my seek thing on). ^^; I try to go on anon, but they assume I'm a high lvl and I get bothered for Raise. i think you can purchase the spirits at the ah...
i think they'll be weaker though...
as for pt'ing in dunes...
i suggest keep trying...
eventually you'll find a great group and you'll lvl a ton...
then just try and pt with them when you can...
for some reason when i was in valk or qufim i got a bad pt rarely...
there was more good pts than bad ones...

Just dinged 37, and my group fell apart shortly after. Ahh well.
I started subbing sam, regardless that I still stand by the fact war is a better sub until 60. But I'm thinking I'll stick with sam sub until 50. Mostly because I'm sick of people trying to make me tank. I know I can tank, if absolutely positively need be, but it's just too much of a freaking hassle. Seriously, if I wanted to be a tank, I'd be a warrior or a paladin. Or a ninja with supah monies and utsusemi. But people will still see me as drg/war and be like 'omg he has provoke, he can tank for us, we don't need a pld or a war, none are lfg right now, so let's just get the dragoon!' Bah.
I need to level ninja to 12 at some point. Then I can go back to leveling war some too. Need to get him to 25, at least. Two levels of war/nin utsusemi tanking will be fun though, when I get around to it. Right now I'm trying to gungho it to 42 for AF1.

...no, the fee is to fund keeping the servers up and running. I hate Square-Enix for some of the decisions they make and some of the game mechanics that don't make any sense to me, but I do have to give them the fact that their downtimes aren't bad at all. People will come around, I have the same problem. But for you, war is even more elite than it is for me. Forget provoke. At 50+ you will have not only triple attack, but double attack as well. That's a possible six attacks per round. With a dagger, that's like ~12 attacks to a Lance/Scythe/Great Axe/etc's one.
Dagger I'm pretty sure gets 6% tp/hit. I get 13% with sam sub. So in the time I get say 26%, you could have gotten over 100% and have done sneak/trick/viper bite already. ;p

It's a shame too, I could've sold these both in the AH for ~120,000G, as opposed to spending 6,000 on Silent Oils to get them both, then 4,900 on shihei powders, and 5,000 on Shinobi Tabi. I made a post a few pages back about how I wasn't sure if I should get it or not for the PS2......I was worried about jerks telling off all the PS2 noobs that will be popping up.
But I guess it was the same for all you PC guys so I made up in my mind to give it a shot in March.
The prob is I started doing some research on this game and man does it seem hard to get into. Is that the case?
How was it starting for all you guys? Did you do tons of research and such to get the character you have now? Or did you just jump straight in?
Of course my research is ongoing but man it seems so difficult. Seems much harder than the ol' EQ junk I'm used to. I don't even have a clue as to what class I wanna be. On the EQ side of things I've been an enchanter and a rogue...more recently on the PS2 I've become an alchemist.
I'm still researching but I dunno I may go thief and something lol....the subjob business and such sounds cool but it's rather hard to understand so far.
Anyways I wish I was there! Damn you shiny new notebook for work related purposes only!!!! Ah well see ya in March I guess...
Oh edit!!!
BTW I always have been a fan of being characters that don't get used much....for whatever reasons. Any jobs or whatever that you rarely see on your server etc?
Thanks in advance!

Yah since I typed the first message I've been checking some sites....for about the last 3 hrs actually....
Goodness all this jazz about combos and grouping seem so...intimidating. It seems like you have to get really good with your character really fast or you won't get groups. And hey what's this I hear about the Japanese and American players avoiding each other...why is that? My guess would be the lanquage barrier I suppose or is it more of a skill issue as the game hasnt been around for too long here.
And yah like you said I am getting hyped up.....but I still have no clue. Unless if I was wrong the game drops around the 24th of March...I hope I am ready.
Monk eh? Hmmm I will have to check on that. As for a class I still think I will go as a thief but man.....the subjob thingie as well as advanced jobs seem sooooo difficult lol. I also read on a post that you should pick a character depending on what you like to do in MMORPGs.
Well I hate to heal so that's out of the question. And being a pally as well as a warrior isnt too fun either. So tanks and healers are out.
In most games I prefer to be a caster type. But being an enchanter on EQ took approximately 8 billion hours and while it was fun to charm animals and such it seems that beastmasters won't land me into too many groups on FFXI.....
Pure magic peeps like BLM don't really intrest me either unless the casting dynamic is different....something other than nuke...wait....nuke....
Red mage looks good too but being the jack of all trades, master of none tag......hmmm I dunno.
So the only thing that looks good atm (til I check out the monk) is thief for me. Maybe a Hume thief cause I don't want to be all big and bulky.....maybe a ninja after that.
Oh one thing that I didn't notice anywhere that I wish I could get an awnser to:
Are ninjas the only dual wield class?
Well anyways I don't wanna spam up your thread but eh there's doesn't seem to be another thread about it. But if you want me to stop posting here just say so...it's no prob.
Thanks for the help !n.....I'd type more of your name but I can't find the third character lol...it's an L though I am not sure...
So thanks in advance should anyone wish to shed more light!

ya i have to agree warriors do get boring. Belive me...plz. Anyway...the whole monk thing...it seems to me that people dont like them too much because they realize, if they use hand to hand combat, that their weapons make their delays slower. My brother started out as a monk but after a week really hated the delay time in battles. But thats from his perspective. Some people may think they benefit from the wait because of the double hit. I persoanlly have fallen in love with my thief now...though i havent played for a while. I guess i just needed to take a break......we'll im hoping to lvl him up a whole bunch tommorow...no school, and God bless Martin Luther King Jr. So i will hopefully be able to reach 15 which im goin for.
So my thief...ya...i started out with dagger and then got to lvl 6 and decided to go with swords instead. Dagger was at lvl 15 so ill have to work my way back up. Only thing is, I have no weapon abilities at the moment. I hope i get some more. thats the update for now...thnx to all for listening....lol...

Not really, you can level at your own pace and be just fine. The problem is meeting people and making friends. If you don't all level at the same rate, you'll have to make new friends.
And hey what's this I hear about the Japanese and American players avoiding each other...why is that? My guess would be the lanquage barrier I suppose or is it more of a skill issue as the game hasnt been around for too long here.
First of all, don't give the japanese player base undue credit. They aren't gods of gaming, they aren't the best players in FFXI ever, they don't know everything there is to know. In general, yes, they do have a greater understanding for game mechanics, and more experience with the game. But there are constantly new japanese players picking up the game, and even those jp players that are high level aren't the best players. There are plenty of retarded ones out there, regardless of how long they've played. Basically, if you've played MMORPGs before, you should know very well that someone being a high level doesn't necessarily mean they are a good player. Of course, there are racist/elitist japanese players that do think they're better than all of us, and will refuse to invite you if you don't have the japanese client. It also works the other way around. However, the primary barrier is language. People refuse to use or can't use autotranslate correctly. They've added a TON of things to autotranslate, people need to take advantage of it if they can't speak japanese.
Monk eh? Hmmm I will have to check on that. As for a class I still think I will go as a thief but man.....the subjob thingie as well as advanced jobs seem sooooo difficult lol. I also read on a post that you should pick a character depending on what you like to do in MMORPGs.
There aren't many monks due to the fact they have nothing to offer. They're a generic damage output class. They're very very well loved for encoutners, especially for things like BCNM, due to Hundred Fists, but that's all they really have. The only thing they make a good sub for are warriors, and that just until 30 when you can get something better. Well, they're still good subs for warrior, but most will take something like ninja, or samurai eventually. Monks do start getting better at higher levels, especially with stuff like Raging Fists. However, since monk damage is between two fists, a single hit is only ~6TP, Raging Fists is a five hit ws, so you'll get 30TP... so you can't really spam that for damage. A Dark Knight has Guillotine, a four hit WS, but scythe gains ~12TP/hit, so you'll get 48, more TP to spam with. Penta Thrust is a five hit polearm ws, pole gives 12% as well, so that's 60%. Then there are bonuses for having a samurai sub to all this TP gain, so a dragoon could effectively spam Penta Thrust with a dragoon exclusive high damage lance for very high damage output. A drk/sam could do the same with guillotine, though they wouldn't want to, because they can even get more damage out of it with Soul Eater, and Last Resort, and that'd get some insane aggro. A dark knight doesn't want agro. And until they get Spiral Hell, they cannot manage their own aggro, unless they sub thief for Trick Attack. A dragoon as Super Jump which is essentially a Ranger's Jolt. I probably just confused you more if anything. Meh, if you want to know about subjobs, I could explain the benefits of each in another post.
Beastmasters aren't really casters. They just charm things. And give them treats to heal them. And they can summon familiars. They're pretty much the solo class of the game, the only class that can do it effectively. As for black mages, they definitely do more than just nuke wait nuke. Granted, that's their generic role, and you'll do it a lot. But there's more to it. With the weapon skillchains, each creates a different elemental effect, some more than one. With offensive magic you can take advantage of this with magic bursts, time your spells correctly do to bonus damage. Heh, a friend was getting over 1000 damage doing a magic burst with Freeze. Normally it does ~800dmg, so an extra 200 is definitely well worth it. Majority of the time, you'd have a white mage sub, so you'd be expected to back up the healer. As a caster you really only have a choice of three subs. You're two of four: black mage, white mage, red mage, summoner.
Red mage looks good too but being the jack of all trades, master of none tag......hmmm I dunno.
Lies. Red Mage by definition is a 'jack of all trades' because they can use decent swords, wear decent armor, and cast both black and white magic, however, they are masters. They are the masters of enhancing and enfeebling magic. Also, you say you played an enchanter-- Red Mages get Refresh, which is essentially Clarity. They get self only weapon enhancement spells, which give your weapon a 100% process of elemental damage. But Red Mages become enfeeblers and healers. They debuff the crap out of the mob, and then to go into heal mode. And of course, they get to cast refresh on everyone with mana, just like a 'chanter. Once you get to 42, you never have to sit down, if that's any concellation. You cast refresh on yourself, you stand there, when you run out of mana, you use your rdm Convert ability, which will trade your MP and HP, then you divine seal + Cure III yourself, you get a bunch of mana back, you spend a little to get full health back, and refresh finishes the rest.
So the only thing that looks good atm (til I check out the monk) is thief for me. Maybe a Hume thief cause I don't want to be all big and bulky.....maybe a ninja after that.
Hume works. But incase you're a 'must be totally awesome' type of player, Mithra make the best thieves.
Are ninjas the only dual wield class?
Yep. Unless you use ninja as a subclass, then you can dual wield. Dual wielding for damage is overrated. It doesn't work like it does in EQ. In FFXI, dual wield takes the delays of both of your weapons, and adds them together. So as a ninja, you'll have two 200 delay katana, but you'll have a 400 delay. So rather than having a 13/200, you have a 26/400. And half of that could miss. Given, ninja eventually overcome this, by level 45, there is no penalty for dual wielding, so they are fast attackers. But as a sub job, it won't get to that point. You'll only get the ability, and the first bonus. The main reason for subbing ninja is for Utsusemi. Utsusemi = blink = automatic dodge of attacks. Utsusemi: Ichi will absorb three attacks, three attacks won't even hit you. With the new level cap of 75, subs reach level 37, which is just enough for Utsusemi: Ni, which will absorb five attacks, and takes less than half the time to cast. So basically you tank as a war/nin by never taking damage. Also, you can use ninja dual wield for bonuses. A ranger subbing ninja could wield two Archer's Daggers, each give a bonus to ranged accuracy. Two bonuses is better than one. ;p

Michael......
Thanks for the long list of info.....still seems like I got a lot more investigating to do on this game. Still though I cannot wait....after reading that and doing more research on my own the wait is starting to get bad lol.....really bad.
Hmm a good red mage sounds like a desired party member....if I can compare it to eq for a bit they seem like the bard class of that game.
Also to you or whoever else wishes to awnser how about the sub and advanced jobs. I'm guessing it's like the old FF style of things but is there a gigantic difference between the more advanced jobs after you lvl a bit?
And also while I've seen a few screenshots and such from being in the world a bit how do you guys feel about character customization in FF? It doesn't seem like a lot of choices when setting up your character and in a way thats ok but....
How about when u start to lvl a bit? I mean does everyone look the same or tend to seek the same types of items?
I would hate to walk 5 ft and see 4 people with the same type of uber sword as me....or all the people of a certain class looking exactly the same for 20 lvls.....
And one last thing....since you brought up that the 'dual wield' thing wasnt the same as EQ thats' cool...but exactly how is weapon damage in this game? Are there penalties for say an axe as opposed to a dagger? Like the axe would do more damage but swings slower and maybe has a lower accuracy rate, thus making it harder to use? Or the dagger would be quicker and more accurate, but do less damage?
Or are the weapons acc, dam etc based on stats or class structure or something lol?
Again thanks for the hand and whoever else wishes to pitch in.

5 days PLAY TIME.
He made hsi char when i did. and i only got 2 days on. (more like 49 or 50 hours to be exact)
I can understand how it could be boring.
Being a redmage was boring up untill about lvl 12, then you start getting in a big ole 6 people groups and really have a place. Where depend on you. its great.

Well... there is a bard job. Red Mages end up being more like your druid/shaman with a couple extra tricks. They've got the beneficial magic, but they have some offensive too. Of course, they're far far more desirable than either a druid or a shaman was in EQ. This is because they're essentially part enchanter too, since they have refresh. Refresh > Mage's Ballad (bard mp regen). Also Red Mages can take over healing, and can also debuff mobs (slow, paralyze, etc-- shaman; gravity[snare]-- druid).
Also to you or whoever else wishes to awnser how about the sub and advanced jobs. I'm guessing it's like the old FF style of things but is there a gigantic difference between the more advanced jobs after you lvl a bit?
Well, it's by the support job's active and passive abilities.
Warrior - support class good for any melee fighter. Grants the ability to Provoke (taunt), provides a passive defensive bonus, and later on Double Attack and a damage bonus. Also gives active abilities, such as Berserk (+damage -defense), Defender (+defense -damage), and War Cry (+damage for whole party)
Monk - Provides an innate haste with hand to hand weapons, as well as massive health. Active abilites such as boost (click it a bunch of times and do one massive double damage strike at the beginning of a fight), Dodge (evasion bonus), Focus (accuracy bonus), and eventually Chakra (heal self).
White Mage - Subbed for a mana increase and basic healing ability as a black mage. For a red mage, same reasons, but also to gain access to group spells. On it's own, a red mage can only cast Protect on a single member at a time, while white mages have a spell to hit the entire party for the same amount of mana as one cast of single person. This is also good for gaining Curaga (group heal). White mages also gain HP Regen, Mana Regen (of course) and magic defense bonuses. They have Divine Seal, which when activated will make your next heal spell twice as effective. At the end game, if you have whm maxed at level 37, and you're level 75, you could use the sub to teleport yourself around the world.
Black Mage - Subbed more commonly to simply increase one's mana pool. Given, you get black magic spells, but a rdm ro whm subbing black mage is more often than not doing it for more mana. A bonus of having Black Mage for a melee is that if he's out questing, he'll have access to Warp (Gate). Provides passive abilities like mana regen, magic damage bonuses, and mana conservation.
Red Mage - If taken, more because it will give more mnd to a whm than blm sub, and more int to a blm than whm sub. Also gives Fast Cast, both magic damage bonus and defense bonus, and eventually, their own mana regen.
Thief - A fairly popular sub for anyone who likes to camp spawns and/or looking for a quick buck. Thief has passive abilities that will increase drop rates, as well as how much gil you'll find on a corpse. They also get a bunch of evasion bonuses. As for active abilities, you'll get Sneak Attack (backstab), Steal, Flee, and eventually Trick Attack and Mug. Of course, in this game, the difference between Steal and Mug is Steal takes an item, Mug takes money. Trick Attack is a very cool skill. Instead of in EQ where you hide mid combat to get rid of agro, with Trick Attack, you stand behind a party member, when you hit with Trick Attack, the mob will think the person infront of you hit them. You can transfer agro around the party with it, and it does a bonus to damage. In well organized groups, you can have a guinnea pig stand behind the mob, and do both Sneak Attack + Trick Attack at once, getting a massive damage bonus. Even worse, add a weapon skill to it, such as Viper Bite, which on it's own deals double damage. I've seen thieves in the 30s do 400dmg with Sneak+Trick+Viper Bite.
Paladin - Terrible, terrible sub. Some white mages like to take it, because they think "oh wow, I get defense bonuses, some mind, and some mana, joy of joys~." I hate them. They also get stuff like Resist Sleep (I guess it doesn't hurt to have, rarely ever even see a paladin resist sleep, though). They intimidate undead just by standing there, and have a group vs. undead buff.
Dark Knight - Also a terrible sub. Melee will take it for the many attack bonuses, a couple spells, and for abilities like Last Resort (+damage -defense, massive bonus/penalty respectively, only lasts 30 seconds), and Soul Eater (bonus in damage, the bonus damage is dealt to you too, though). They have a natural resistance to Paralyze, and intimidate arcana (stuff like bombs), and have a group vs. arcana buff.
Beastmaster - Again, terrible sub. It's fun to mess with, if you're raiding with your ls and just having fun (ie, not an important raid needing you to be at maximum effectiveness). You can charm things to fight for you and stuff. But uh, unless you're just screwing around, don't even sub it. They get track... but it's horribly limited.
Ranger - Popular sub for farming. But if you're not farming, leave it alone. Will give you track, ranged accuracy, natural defense to poison, rapid shot for ranged weapons. Active abilities include a click ranged accuracy bonus, scavenge (forage), Camouflage (invis), and Barage (damage x random number of shots, ranged attack ability).
Bard - Terrible sub, unless, again, you're just fooling around. Instruments are bard primary only, and they give bonuses to your songs. Also, as a primary bard you can play two songs at once, with sub you can only sing one song at a time. They have a natural resistance to silence. That's all. ;p
Summoner - Subbed for the fact they have the largest mana pools, and int/mnd bonuses of all the classes. However, summons drain mana like crazy, and you can't use the avatar's most powerful abilities as a subbed summoner. It's taken by people who think they are a pure mage. Honestly though, a blm/whm is going to get more groups than a blm/smn. They get both Clear Mind and Auto Refresh (two separate mana regen abilites that are always active), and are resistant to slow, oh boy!
Samurai - VERY popular support job for just about any melee. They have bonuses to TP gain, which is +1 TP per hit per level of Store TP (levels at 10, 30, and 50). Also has the skill Meditate, gives an instant boost to your TP, usable once a minute. They intimidate Demons, and have a group vs. demon buff.
Ninja - Subbed mostly for dual wield and/or utsusemi. A ranger would use ninja sub to dual wield Archer's Daggers, which give a bonus to ranged accuracy. A warrior would use ninja sub to option dual wield, but primarily for utsusemi. You also get stealth, which lowers the aggro radius of mobs.
Dragoon - Terrible sub. You can.. uh. Jump. You get an attack and accuracy bonus. You intimidate dragons (yeah like all six of them) and have a group vs. dragons buff. You can't summon a pet wyvern as a dragoon sub, however.
Pretty much everyone wears the same thing. Around the 30s you start seeing some rogue players. Most people my level seem to enjoy their Centurion's armor, I'm now sporting Iron Scale Mail. I also have one piece of the Race Specific Armor, which give me +2 dex. It depends on the player. Some actually care to max things out, so you'll see some casters in full RSE armor for all of the +mana bonuses. Other casters might just continue on their grind. Some dark knights might consider they still tank from time to time, and wear heavier armor. Others will wear full RSE for the mana bonuses and consider themselves a damage support class. Once you get to the AF armor levels, pretty much everyone looks exaclty the same as anyone else in their class. Some might get their high level Job Specific Armor. (think ToV vs. Kael armor in the Velious days) And now with 70-75, there's some nice gear that people are banking their AF armor for.
There's nothing like accuracy penalties. But as a given, a dagger would be something like 5dmg/170dly while an axe might be 12dmg/400dly. Also, each job has a set proficiency with certain weapons. This affects generic damage as well as how high the weapon's skill level caps off at each level. For instance, a warrior has a B- proficiency with Polearm weapons. A Dragoon has an A+. So, a dragoon will get weapon skills at earlier levels than a warrior, and will aso do more damage. Penta Thrust is learned at level 49 for a dragoon, but 51 for a warrior or a samurai. And if a paladin felt so inclined to take up polearm for any reason, they'd learn it at 56.

And on my own personal notes:
I've accomplished a lot in the last few days. Expanded my mog safe to 60 slots. My inventory to 35 slots. I got the Tonko: Ichi and Utsusemi: Ichi ninjutsu scrolls. I won a BCNM50 in Giddeus (three chests, one randomly has loot, the other two turn into mimics. Choose wisely. ;p) I got Rank 5 and my Airpass. And I set up a livecam site which is in my signature. Whenever I'm playing it'll update every five minutes with a new picture of whatever I see. Also added a tag board, so people could comment, seeing as I'm sort of curious what people end up seeing.
And I have at least 31 days of /playtime now. ;p

well thanks for the info dee.
this is how it went down last night. I was out training with my thief and got really tired. So with this happening I thought i might try magic for a little. So i took up the red mage job and got to lvl 3 in 5 minutes. I actually like it more than the thief. But thats just the first 3 lvl's. The whole magic bit sounds pretty fun, so what the heck, might as well give that a spin. I'll always have the thief to turn to f in need.

I managed to join two worthless parties last night and died both times. That certainly didn't help my xp, so I'm still stuck at 15 WAR. A nice dhalmel hunting party would be nice tonight. Less chance of running into a ghoul that way. :scared:
EDIT:
Thanks for all the info, Michael. You just changed my decision on a sub-class when I get there.

Heh, you guys think it's bad at your levels. Try when you get into the upper 30s. I just spent four hours with seek party on, and didn't get a group.
And it only gets worse.

It keeps getting better, up untill about 12 i suggest getting all the spells you can, Armor, and best weapons etc. Since your gonna melee alot untill about lvl 12-13.
After that the real fun begins. As you enter into large groups, You melee / Cast status magic, or like me i do both. Then when the WHM is Out of mana you support/backup heal. You have no idea how many group members i saved healing.
Spells like Bio, Paralyze, Bind, Blind, Become very very useful in a full group. Your basically turning your target into a sack of meat that cant do anything, As it takes Bio damage every few seconds (or however long it is exactly) It really begins to get extremely fun. I can't wait to keep getting spells and doing stuff of the such... I rock.

Well, now I feel bad. After bitching about dying in my groups yesterday, I managed to be the only one that lived out of a great group tonight (It feels wrong being a WAR and outliving everyone else in your group). I witnessed my first crazy glitch when all of this happened. It seemed to be a lot of lag catching up at once, but there wasn't even a little bit of lag before it happened. I ended up taking about 150 damage more than I should have been able to. My health just stopped going down no matter what. Lasted about a minute and by then I was safe. Weird stuff.

Heh. In a couple more levels though, rdm stops melee. You don't want to melee. Too much of a risk. That and your mana is much much more important than your DPS. Seriously, I hate grouping with rdm that refuse to sit the christ down. All it does is generate more unneeded downtime, risk the rdm getting agro, and delay the effectiveness of spells be they heals or debuffs.
