The Million Dollar Prons
February 3rd, 2006, 10:42 PM
This quest seems like a lot of work just for a wand with 10 revives. I can see the use of 10 revives, but still, having to stand around like an idiot yelling "I need a female hume for the quest!" is just too much XD

Question.
So I got my chocobo license and took my Chocobo for a ride to Bastok(^_^ Chocobo), and I stopped at N. Gusta to set my homepoint for some reason. And when I got off...it ran away. Okay, I'd definitely expect that if I hadn't seen somebody standing next to their Chocobo in Valkrum before. So tell me, what's the deal? Is there anyway to temporarily dismount? If not: What was up with the guy and his Chocobo I saw in Valkrum?
Thanks if you respond.

The Chocobo system in FFXI sucks. They run away from you after a certain amount of time, and you can't dismount. I haven't played in a while, but I doubt that has changed.

Everything you need to know about Chocobos. (http://www.vgcats.com/comics/?strip_id=101)
I haven't played this game in fo' ever but I was bored and couldn't resist.
Danju-sama is pretty much right. I thought you could dismount though...... The higher your level the longer you can ride the Chocobo I think.

Congratulations on getting your chocobo liscense MC.
The rule with chocobo riding is that they will leave in about 30 minutes real life time - about 20 minutes if you're a level 18 and hop on a chocobo at the stables in Bastok, Windy, or Sandy. If you used a chocopass (not chocobo ticket) you get from doing one of the holiday events, that will only last for about 5 minutes (but no chocobo liscense required).
Once you dismount, you must go to a nearest town or crag to catch a chocobo again. So do not get off from your chocobo until you reach your destination.
And about the guy you saw in Valkurm Dunes: My guess is that it's a glitch of some sort. I am assuming that you are playing on Hydra, which is a beta server. If so, there are plenty of glitches that people need to report. I have heard of players being able to attack other players if both players target a mob simultaneously, and it auto-targets the other player. I have heard of players being able to cure Beastmasters pet. So, what you saw in Valkurm Dunes is possibly a glitch. Or someone was doing the invisible-spell-while-riding-a-chocobo trick. Have a friend or PT member cast invisible on you while riding a chocobo. This will make the player riding a chocobo, well, invisible. It will make it seem like there is a wild chocobo on the loose.

I don't even remember what level I was last time I posted on AN forums... haha ^_^;; Been awhile anyway. I think I was like a level 51 Samurai or something.
Anyway, I'm a 75 Samurai / 37 Thief now. I want to make Paladin my next main, it's level 39 right now. I just got my Shura Togi last week, along with my AF2 boots in my last run through Dynamis-Jeuno. It was my first piece of AF2.
I have a 2nd character, a Tarutaru named Megamanx who is a 25 White mage as well.
Amazing the longevity of this game.

I'm glad deflation is hitting right now. The previous inflation was absurd. Sure, most of my gear is r/ex since i'm a 71 BRD and 71 SMN, but still. Just looking at the prices of equipment really irked me. :|

Sometimes Greed also fuels Inflation.
Many people bought and sold items and made lots of gill.
I had items from my leveling that were drops that I saved and put on my Mule chars.
Things like a cassie and physical earings.
They were worth millions at one time.
I'm glad I saved them as I'm leveling one of my sister chars as war/monk atm.
Others were worth hanging on to like my Magicians earing. bout for like 2ok long ago but was worh 1-2 mil at one point.
Would you sell them and make money?
Lunay
February 20th, 2006, 05:47 PM
Sold most of my unused goods that are worth 1 million + before the deflation, and I am so glad. =P Most of my items are from like 2 years ago, so my profit is insane. Items like Corsairs Knife, which I have purchased for 200k about 2 years ago, and recently sold for 2 million, so it does pay to hold onto some commonly popular items like the Scorpion Harness, Leaping Boots, Emperors Hairpin, Cassie Earring, Astral Ring, etc. It's kinda like the stock market, buy low, sell high. Yes, it's greed, but a necessity to obtain gil.
Straying away from the topic of gil... I just finished doing the new avatar fights. We fought super-omega-whachmacalit Titan with his 4 Earth Elemental compadres. It was pretty rough, but managed to defeat them on the third try. Titan used a new ability called Geo-something (sorry I forgot) which did pretty high damage and it also stuns you. After we defeated him, we got a key item. I am assuming that we need to do the same with Ifrit, Shiva, Garuda, and Ramuh, and go to Full Moon Mountain. The match is 18 alliance maximum, so it's waaaay harder than your ordinary avatar fight. It will take some time to gather all of them. I am looking forward to what reward is waiting.

I was dumb and sold a bunch of gear before the inflation hit, thinking I could actually leave this game. But I was back after about 3 weeks. My biggest mistake was selling my RSE (female elvaan) gear, which rarely gets sold by anybody on my server. Took me several weeks to get the gloves with +3 dex and +24mp are highly valued by Elvaan (I had used them as Pld from lvl 27 to AF). I dinged 62 the other day, so slowly but surely i am getting closer to 75. Also sitting on ZM6, and COP mission after the Minotaur mission.

The new Puppetmaster job sounds interesting. Gonna have to experiment with that and Blue Mage or Summoner to see which job I should take as my 3rd. Got RNG to 66 with S-Bow and O-Bow, finally.

Yea, i am intrigued by the puppet master job. It kinda sounds like something that the BST/SMN would be doing, (but you control little puppets?). Being a Galka, the blue mage job is probably out for me, unless i get all my RSE pieces together. I'd like to try out the Corsair job, i wonder if i should start raising my marksmanship with my RNG to prepare.
Im glad that they announced that 360 characters will be carrying over. I just hope they dont stick us on servers with the PC/ps2 version, you guys have a really messed up economy because of the gil buyers.

Well, I'm back from the FFXI Festival. All I can say is, it's worth the $85 entrance fee. Tried ToAU several times and the new areas are amazing! ToAU will no doubt be the most exciting expansion.
As for the new jobs, I am looking forward to playing all 3 of them. But I am particularly interested in Puppetmaster and Blue Mage. I will do BLU/BST for soloing to learn new abilities. I'm not sure if PUP/BST will work since the rule is you can only have one pet (BST, SMN, DRG) at a time, but I will try that as well. I'm only 5k to raising my Bard to 75 so I am looking forward to these new jobs. Until then more merits.

quick question. what is their policy on sharing accounts. im going to start playing soon and my friend says he has some free character spaces i can use. would he get in trouble for that or is it ok?
Ketaru
March 20th, 2006, 06:50 PM
Their policy is that you should not share accounts. He won't get in trouble for it, though. It is mostly reserved for sharing account information with people you know online.
A lot of item "theft" happens in the game, and one of the main means by which to do it is to use account info somebody generously gave to you to log onto their account, send it all to your own character on another account, and basically Square Enix wouldn't really be able to do anything about it unless you can prove that they took your account info without your knowing somehow. (and sharing characters happens far more than you would think, especially at endgame when you need somebody with a specific job but they themselves cannot be there at the time so they just let somebody else man their character).
But one of the first things Square Enix tells you outright is NOT TO SHARE YOUR ACCOUNT INFORMATION WITH ANYONE.

Personally I've found the jobs of TOA to be a huge disappointment. The areas and new enemies are great, but the player side of it just seems like one big gimmick. Blue Mage makes sense to me, but I personally dislike playing mages, so no real interest. I wish they could have made a normal pirate, and not the gambler corsair pink frilly fruity french hexagun support role pirate. Puppetmaster leaves me speechless.
I just hope the overall content makes up for it. I'm not even sure if I'll bother with it though, depends on what's going on when it comes out.
It's fueling my desire for Vanguard: Saga of Heroes to deliver in a huge way, and I don't want to be disappointed. :(

Congratulations Gatomon! I've seen you in-game as "Brandychan" I believe. So you're in Fusion and HongKongSuperMarket I take it? AF2 drops sucks for RDM. Even though I lead my LS in attendance, I'm only 1/5 (hands). Recently, I just got the Aq.Abj. for Dalmatica but need to save up gil for the cursed item. So I took a break from RNG(70) and now leveling SMN(14) as my 3rd job. As for the new jobs, I'm going to try Blue Mage to see if it's worth taking past subjob level.

Not to mention i spent way too much time playing this game (600 hours in 2 months). Definately need to "kick the habit" maybe ill try out WOW now that you can get on public servers for free.

Saw the list of moves for BLU. Seems kinda fun but I'm not sold on it to take as a main. Too much dependancy on TP and most likely less MP than a RDM, which would make it an okay DD endgame (better than MNKs with 1000 Needles rotation). I'll still continue as SMN (19). It's nice to finally be able to quiver Holy and Acid Bolts for RNG too. That'll help me finish it to 75 much quicker now. Oh, and I finally got the Duelist's Tabard last weekend. All I'm missing now that I really like are the Duelist's Chappeau, Altruistic Cape and Nashira pants.

I hope they consider giving SAM that TP drain ability, considering my main job is SAM. An ability such as that could be pretty affective in large numbers of SAM, and if your using a Shinsoku. I'm pretty sure if they did consider giving SAM the ability it wouldn't drain too much TP. It would still be nice though.

Well this week I'm getting FFXI. I've always wanted it since it came out for the PS2 but at $100 it was a big no. Now since its on the 360 I have my chance.
So as a newbie to the game is there anything I need to know?
Is playing as a white mage a bad move?

There are many advice I would like to give you, but the first thing that came to mind is "save your beastmen's seals." You will thank me later.
Is playing as a white mage a bad move?
I don't see why playing white mage is a bad move. A white mage will get invited right away and level fast. It's magic scrolls and equipments are pretty affordable (with a few exception like Erase and Astral Ring). As a white mage, you get to watch other jobs perform, and hopefully learn a few things. So, there are many good reasons why you should level white mage.
But if I were to start all over again, I would definitely raise Thief first. The reason is simple, treasure hunter (a job trait which increases item drops). Gil is very important in the world of Vana' diel, and having a Thief will help you earn some of your gil. Of course, Thief isn't the only way to make gil. You can raise your white mage to level 42 and become a tele-*****. =P
PS - Raised PUP to 60 like I said i would before ToAU came out. I will continue when AF is released. Now raising COR, currently at 25. And today I earned enough points to get my Walahra Turban.

I got suckered in to starting my account up when the walahra turban was mentioned. I grinded 25 merits in four days. I got my turban and haven't logged in since. :(
I dunno, I feel like my time is better than FFXI these days. Even with me being up at 4:30 am and posting on a forum. :p
I just can't justify setting seek and then doing something completely unrelated to FFXI for a few hours until something happens. Or try to make my own party and still not accomplish anything unless I'm lucky enough to have friends with key jobs in the level range.
I can't really get anything done without a static, and all my friends are already taken. So my only option is to pay to sit in a corner all day trying to make something happen. I'm finally realising it's just not worth it. The game is just far too slow for me now. :(
This game used to be amazing for me-- I take breaks from every game just because I have MMO ADHD... that's nothing new for me. But it saddens me it's taken just over 2 years to reach the point it ultimately took me 5 years to reach in EQ. Though I guess during EQ there wasn't anything else to play really. :p
Right now I'm just jumping between games every month... WoW, FFXI, CoV are the main three right now. :/
God I hope Vanguard can get me out of this MMO slump for at least a year. :p

It's hard to solo as a WHM, but try to solo to at least lvl10 and start seeking. You can continue seeking while soloing, preferrably in Konschat Highlands or La Theine Plateau since it's close to Valkurm Dunes. You should get a PT in no time.
Try to reach level 18 and finish the sub-job quest as soon as possible. After that, it is up to you wether you want to raise BLM a little, so that you can sub it for your WHM, OR continue leveling WHM without a sub.
As far as missions.. that's also totally up to you when you want to do it. If you can get help, then go for it. Mission 2-3 for every nation is a dragon BC with a level cap of 25. But if you get a MNK and 3 RNGs to help you, it will be a piece of cake.
Rank is really not important in my opinion, but your sub-job is. There is no particular order you should do things. Just decide for yourself.
Bezerker
May 23rd, 2006, 09:22 PM
Theres a couple perks to rank, at Rank 4 (lvl 30) you get the NPC buddy quest, and at 5 you get the Airship pass
But yea, try to get to 10, then go to Valkurm til 18, up to you whether you want to get a subjob (either raise a BLM to 15 or select BLM as your new main). Qufim from 20-25, Kazham to 25-30. Shouldnt take long as a WHM, assuming the server your on isnt chock full of newb tanks. From there, you can choose a advanced job (BRD seems to be a popular one, BST if you want to do some melee). I've never gotten past 33, so i have no idea from there. Check out http://ffxi.allakhazam.com/ for all the information you could need.

Well, I finally got my RNG to 75 and now working on my 30SMN as my 3rd job. Although boring at times, it's so effortless to level SMN lol. I like how they are reliable, constant DDs endgame and I already have alot of the equipment for it. Hopefully soon, our LS can take on Jormungand again as we failed due to lack of people and inexperience. I'm pretty sure we'll win on our next try.
Getting really tired of Dynamis but I can't quit now being really close to the Deulist's Chapeau. Ironically, I'm 4/5 on RNG AF2 including both Snow pieces even though RDM is my main (2/5, hands and body). That's what happens when they nerfed the job. I just still enjoy RNG regardless and they do have their moments still.
I haven't tried any of the new jobs although it seems BLU and COR are really thriving. Looks like they screwed up with PUP but I'd expect a boost to them anyway.
Lunay
June 17th, 2006, 05:10 AM
<Congratulations> on your RNG 75. RNG is still one of the most powerful DDs, imo. And I have more respect for the people that are raising RNG after the nerf. Before the nerf, RNG was probably the most sought after DD (instant invite), and it took no skill whatsoever to play one (stand point blank). =P
My COR is currently lvl70. And it's like playing RNG and BRD all over again in one package. I love it. I mainly use /RNG sub for Barrage, acc bonus and sharpshoot, but I am forced to sub /NIN when: 1) the tank can't keep hate for ****. 2) when I'm the puller and and the mob is too fast (Puk, Colibi, etc). I haven't subbed /WHM yet, but I'm sure it will happen when I get closer to 75. Good thing about COR is that it almost has the same reputation as a BRD now. I can join manaburn, arrowburn, axeburn, you name it. I just wish that we have a better gun and ammo selection. I have been using a Matchlock Gun ever since lvl56 for crying out loud! But that's ok because I have a Coffinmaker waiting for me in 2 levels.
My BLU is lvl1. =P But from what I have seen, they are the most powerful out of the 3 new jobs. BLU/THF seems like a weird combination, but it works quite well when trying to do damage. I have seen this JP do 1300+DMG with sneak+Death Scissors. Amazing stuff.
My PUP is 62 and I will not touch it again til' AF is released and more attachments and gear become available. It's truly a fun job to play but its clearly incomplete. And the reputation of a PUP is too horrible.
PS - Sorry i just logged out of FFXI and I am bored so i wanted to post something. ^^;

Yea, gil selling sites have ruined the game IMO. I remember you could get 12 Mithkabobs for 1k gil, now its something like 15k. Things that sold for 30k are now in the 4 million range. Pretty much all the NM drops are constantly over-crowded so you obviously have little choice between paying the AH prices or camping for 6-7 hours.

PS - 1000 Moat Carps is very impressive. Only 9000 to go! =P

Vanguard: Developed by Ex SOE members
Being published by SOE.
BEWARE!
I haven't checked this thread since my last post.
I hate the whole OHNOES NOT SOE crowd b.s. On top of that, you obviously don't have the slightest clue of what you're talking about. You're just a blind follower. Or maybe you just played StarWars: Galaxies.
Here's a little history lesson.
EverQuest was developed by a company called Verant Interactive. They had the same deal with SOE as Sigil has with Vanguard right now. Verant made the game, SOE published and provided the servers.
However, the original EQ Dev team, young and naive, accepted SOE's buyout offer having seen the success of EverQuest. Brad McQuaid (creator of EverQuest) was given the head position over SOE's MMO department. He didn't like it there, and soon departed. Brad likes to make games, not watch them be made. He formed Sigil. He stole most of his original Verant team back. Yes, at a time, they were SOE members. But that's not where they started, and that's not where EverQuest started.
I have faith that he learned his lesson--that running his own company is better than running someone else's. He could sell Vanguard out, but only if it goes the way of Matrix Online and just doesn't sell at all, which I highly doubt.
Now, I started playing EQ in 1999, when it first came out. To this day, I still firmly believe the golden age of EverQuest was The Ruins of Kunark. Scars of Velious wasn't too bad, but around this time is when the transition was made from Verant to SOE.
Vanguard is not being developed by the people who ruined EQ. The game may or may not deliver, however, SOE has ZERO hold over it's outcome. Sigil has COMPLETE creative control, exactly the way Verant had it until they sold out.
I've NEVER once had a problem with SOE. I even worked as a Guide for a few months, though it was at the end of my EQ days, post Shadows of Luclin, and I ultimately lost interest in the game altogether.
The only MMO company I've ever firmly disliked has been PlayOnline. And I've delt with majority of the companies. Ever since that day I picked up EverQuest on a whim, MMOs have dominated my gaming play time.
Even still though, the only game to enthrall me to the same extent that EverQuest did in it's golden age, was FFXI.

I took it out for a walk to raise its stamina, and its health bar dropped to almost 60%. I plan on feeding Carrot paste to raise its strength also. I am being very cautious not to get it sick since the items are overpriced right now.

^ The chocobo does not seem to die.. At least from my experience.
Even a busy person like yourself can start raising one, since there is a feature which allows you to set weeks worth of schedule for your chocobo ahead of time. I'm not exactly sure how you will feed it, though.

The "shadiness" of POL is mostly the fact that billing is not flexible. Everyone is charged at the beginning of each month, period. It has nothing to do with when you activate, when you cancel, etc. They also do not prorate, outside of your first paid month of the game.
In other words, if you take a break, and decide to come back, and do it on, say, the 29th of any given month, you will be charged the full 12.95+extra content IDs for 2-3 days of play.
Also, you always have to make sure when you do want to leave, you do it before the end of a month.
Oh, and only cancel your Content IDs. Never cancel your actual POL account. POL is pretty good about purging data every six months (I think it's six, anyway). FFXI was the first game I ever saw a character get purged because I didn't have his ID active. To this day I can still log into EverQuest, after it's been canceled for periods close to a year, and still see my first enchanter I rolled in the first month of the game. He's only level 14, but he's still there.
Anyway, if you cancel your entire POL account, at the purge date, it purges all your account data-- including your cd-keys.

I'm a little confused, so if I cancel on the same day they'd charge me I'd still get charged? Like if I registered on the 15th of December, and tried to cancel on the 15th of Janaury, they'd still charge me for the next month?

It doesn't matter at all what date you register. Their bill date is the 1st-2nd of the month, period. Only your first paid month off of the trial is prorated.
So yeah, if you cancelled on the 15th of January, you would have already been charged for the month of January 14 days ago. :p

@Prons - If you are tired of waiting for an invite, I highly recommend creating your own PT. My other tip is to be descriptive in your search comment. Put things like @tnl, sub-jobs available, etc. I used to play during JP prime time so I put "Nihongo mo wakarimasu" in my comment and it worked like a charm. Im glad it worked out because being a leader is always frustrating for me, especially if you recruit people that are unprofessional. ;p
To add a search comment, menu > search > Edit comment and select from various colored dot; exp party green, mission is red, quest purple, etc. It makes it easier for people to narrow their search.

I went from 1 to 73 solo, then I hit a dead end trying to find a camp at level 74. So I looked for a BST and found one to party with in Bibiki Bay from 74-75. I can't really join a "party"-party because I don't have NIN or WAR levelled.

I know how it feels to finally reach 75 with BST, especially when done by mostly solo. You must feel really good. Now you can go celebrate by calling Amigo Sabotender!
You are right, 73~74 is kinda rough. I leveled in My. Zhaylom, Bibiki Bay and Aydeewa Subterrane. I just wish I had a Adaman Hauberk.. or Ridill (which I will never get).

Ah, I did find a camp in Mt. Zhayolm eventually, but by then, I had already been partying with that other BST and the EXP was really good. I only went there when he wasn't online. And yeah, reaching 75 BST did feel really good. 75 RDM felt good too, but only cause it was my very first job. If I was like one of those people that jumped on the bandwagon, it probably wouldn't have felt as much of an "accomplishment" ("accomplishment" being used loosely since arguably doing anything in a video game is never a real accomplishment)
Actually though, to be honest, I don't want to degrade how much "work" is put into levelling BST, but I would never call it the hardest job to level in the game. It's not hard to play really, it's just hard to learn how to play (and that never really lowers the risk of dying later on). It was 3K an hour on good days soloing...but at least I didn't have to seek for parties (loldrg....sorry, I just had to say it).
Lunay
January 23rd, 2007, 11:36 PM
Im not sure if its the hardest or not, but it certainly can be challenging. Since BST is a one man PT most of the time, you are responsible for hate control, mp, watching aggro, taking care of link, etc. I can say, at least for myself, that BST is the most exciting to raise (although, sometimes lonely ;p). And I also think by playing BST you discorver some sort of self-realization and you learn patience, something many players, including the veterans, lack. I may sound crazy to you by taking this 'game' way too seriously, but I say anything you put your effort into and if you work hard for what you love , whether its a video game or not, its an accomplishment. So I am proud to have raised BST and feel the same for anyone else who have.
Edit: I have ate dirt many times as BST.. lol

A lot of people would die for your brothers account.. lol. As far as taking his BST all the way, I say go for it. Thanks to Aht Urhgan, raising BST has never been easier.
At 66, you can try Waoja-whatchamacallit Woodlands: decent~even Spiders Vs. Puks. Great exp there. Once you hit 67, you can move to Bhaf-Thicket(ugh, I can't spell the name of the new areas correctly) and camp at the Colibi camp near a pond (where you do your BLU AF?) where the 3 leechs are. At 67, most leechs still con tough but they should be able to stay charmed long enough for you to take on a VT Colibi; or charm the Tigers near by which can con even (but they are hard to charm and hit hard). This camp is good to 71 or 72, but expect competition. With ring on you can easily get up to 6k/hour, without the ring probably up to 5k, still awesome. Anything beyond 73+, it does get a little bit trickier because there aren' any perfect spot and you might be forced to slowly grind. Or find a partner like Ketaru and head to Bibiki Bay.
And grats to your Duelist's Chapeau +1. Its hard enough getting the NQ to drop from Xarcabard, and here you have the HQ.. lol.

Ru'Aun Gardens is actually pretty good for 72, nice drops as well. Only thing that is annoying there is there is also the possibility a bored Sky LS will come along and start killing all the pots (even worse, killing all the Flamingoes. At least if they just fight the pots, you can still go Flamingo vs. Flamingo for EXP. You can't charm pots), but there are two possible camps. One at the entrance, and possibly two on the sides of the zone to the Shrine of Ru'Avitau.
Lunay
January 25th, 2007, 07:37 PM
Yeah Sky is good at 72, too. But I just hate fighting pots, mainly because of their -ga and gravity move. But it is indeed a good camp if don't mind fighting pots and if there aren't people skilling up there. At 72, I have tried Aydeewa Subterranne charming Ooze Vs. a VT ranger Qiqirn. Great exp but a little risky since Ooze is hard to charm. At least the camp is near the zone if something were to happen.

So, I meant to ask. Is Final Fantasy XII any good? (yes, I know this is the XI thread, but bear with me) I mean to ask that, "from a Final Fantasy XI perspective".
I'm afraid to chalk up 50 dollars for an MMORPG stype game that lacks the MMO that makes XI interesting. And I've seen videos of the gameplay and it looks like a lot of pausing and frustration trying to control 3 characters at once.

That's what the Gambits system is for. it basically controls your team (Even the Lead) with orders. It's good at first, But gets really dull later in the game. But you can control your full team manually, But I wouldn't recommend it honestly.

Speaking from a FFXI perspective, it's an easy recommendation from me. FFXII felt so much like FFXI, I was ecstatic: huge "zones" divided into several parts; no random encounter, visible mobs roaming around in these "zones"; Notorious Monsters a.k.a. Rare Game, each with a special spawning condition and timer; Exp chain; gambit system a.k.a macro; and more.
Like Ryushe already said, you can either choose to control your characters manually via real-time or wait mode... OR choose to use the Gambit System, which is basically your "macros". The Gambit System is not necessary early in the game, but is highly recommended towards the end, especially when facing tougher mobs like Yiamat (50 million HP) and Behemoth King, since you have too many spells to cast (Reverse, Bubble, Haste, Decoy, Cure, etc). You have so much customization feature to make it more difficult on yourself.
FFXII has so much freedom and definitely has the MMORPG feel. The only thing missing are real people, of course. ;p The story and characters are just "meh". But if you like FFXI, I am pretty confident you will dig FFXII. That is just my 2 cents.

Well, I'm not trying to sell or convert anybody. It's just my 2 cents and only that. So, don't blame me if you hate the game. ;p
Just for the sake of getting back on topic, I did the following in FFXI today (although, nothing spectacular):
Helped kill Roc and Healing Staff dropped, which went to a lucky White Mage.
Helped kill Tzee Xicu the Manifest. He dropped Damasene Cloth, Daylight Dagger and some other junk. I wanted the dagger, but got out-lotted.
Did a few Assault runs for Mamool Ja. I am currently going for Pahluwan Seraweels for my Ranger, Beast and Corsair. Sadly, I'm only at 8000 points - the pants 20,000 points.
Joined a merit PT with my Bard. Got about 30k (3 merit points) in 2 hours. Our camp was through Nyzhal Isle, the "Greater Colibi" camp.
So, I had a pretty fun day!

Grats.. =) The new "no exp loss during CoP" is nice.
Todays update was nothing short of shocking. As if making Sozu, Ulli, Alkyneous, and Pallas a popped NM wasn't shocking enough, they dramatically increased the drop rate of a Thief's Knife close to 100%. Me and my friends headed straight to Temple of Uggaleiph to get our Knife. We got the pop item, "Flickering Lantern" off of Tonberry Persuers very easily. After we all got one we headed to Sozu and popped it. We went 3/3 on the Knife. We are soooo happy!
I was invited to try out the new Nyzhal Isle assault, but I didn't have any tag, so I couldn't go. I might wait a while since Im currently at 18500/20000 for Pahluwan Seraweels - Mamool Ja.
Other welcome change in this update:
Making Ochiudo's Kote, Fuma Kyahan, Strider Boots, Speed Belt, Cassie Earring, Juggernaut, and Serket Ring a rare/ex. I would like to know where the non-rare/ex ones drop from now. Because I certainly would like a few of those items. =p
So far, I am loving this latest update. I can't wait to try to pop Alkyneous and Pallas tomorrow.

Just bought the 360 version (figured $9.99 was a decent price). Unfortunately it seems my 360 beta character was thrown into the void. Which really sucks because my character that i have now is nothing compared to it (only 33 DRK & 30 WAR - beta had 35 on NIN, 30 on MNK, & BST) not to mention lvl 40ish smithing, tons of money, eq, etc. 650 hours i put into that beta character (all in a span of 3 months) gone, I'm a bit discouraged...
Anyone have a high lvl account they no longer want? lol.

It was more than a middle finger... more like a forced butt secks. =p
They will probably increase their fish botters for the time being. And pretty soon, they will be forced to raise crafting and make their gil the legit way, which is a scary thought.

My job levels are: SAM57 WAR40 THF40 MNK30 DRK22 DRG21 BLM20 NIN20 WHM20 RDM10 PLD10 RNG10 BRD10 BST10 SMN02. My aspirations are to get a few select jobs to level 75, complete all of the missions for my nation and each expanion pack, unlock the rest of the jobs, level all other crafting skills to 60 after raising cooking to 100, defeat and obtain each summon, and level the jobs to 40 that I have decided not to level all the way to 75. I enjoy the game very much and am eagerly awaiting returning to it at a soon date, I quit roughly a year ago. If anyone is on Valefor and interested in staticing a lv 56-58 job with a bard and samurai, my friend and I will hapily let you join us after I return. We are also looking for a new linkshell with good people to hang out with, primarily a social linkshell rather than an event or HNM oriented linkshell. However, if the social shell happens to do events often, that would be nice and enjoyable for us.

The server transfer service isn't live just yet, but they have announced for awhile they are working on it. I remember reading about it over a year ago, and the latest update also mentions that they're still trying to finalize it.
I seriously doubt it will be free-- only planned designated server migrations will still be free (if even needed). Like any other MMO with a transfer service, I'm sure it will be a paid service. WoW's open transfer service costs $25 per character. If I remember correctly, EverQuest's cost around $100 when it first opened.

Hmmm, just finished Spring Break so I won't be able to play FFXI until May again. I just have to say, the story of Treasures of Fan'Service...er...Aht Urhgan is actually rather interesting (if you've finished all the way until the latest mission).
Oh, and somebody hosted a level 60 Ballista "tournament" and I won the solo matches and the group matches. Got a Chivalrous Chain, 15K, and 10 Silver Empire Coins for my wins. Yeah, not major, and was probably hopeleslly onesided since Phalanc and Stoneskin are so powerful in 60 cap. But was still fun to win that one.

I have no need to switch servers since I would miss my friends so much. Although, the cheaper price for Strider Boots in Hades and Gilgamesh is tempting - 4 million on their server, 7 million on mine. =P
Random FFXI thoughts:
Thief's Knife is now around 150,000G~200,000G on my server. I am truly surprised it's even worth that much, considering how easy it is to get one. On the first day of the latest update, while everybody else was having trouble logging on, me and my friends each got one within 3 hours or so. I put mine in bazaar for 5 million just for fun, not expecting anyone to actually buy it for that price, and someone bought it the following day. Hehe. I do have sympathy for Thiefs who have earned (not with bought gil =P) theirs pre-update.
There is a massive amount of Venomous Claw circulating now, thanks to everyone (including myself) hording KS30 Operation Desert Storm for Serket Ring. Venomous Claw is down to around 600k on my server. Thankfully, I'm a bonecrafter and Scorpion Harness +1 is still around 2 million. I have done around 3 runs post update, and I have yet to see a Serket Ring. But I am noticing more Venomous Claw now. I guess they increased the drop rate.
The new Nyzahl Isle assault is fun. There are up to 99 floors in this assault, each floor with a specific objective. You try to clear as many floors as you can within a time limit, and after each floor, you have the option to successfully quit and receive tokens. With these tokens, you can continue from the highest floor you have completed. Each floor has familiar NMs and HNMs you see around Vana'diel: Jaggedy, Argus, Leaping Lizzy, etc. These NMs can drop their normal drops. There are reported sightings of Fafnir on floor 20. O.o That would be sooo amazing if Ridill can be gotten from assault, but I highly doubt it.
And I finally got my Pahluwan Seraweels. My Ranger and Beastmaster is lookin' sexy now!

I'm gonna start doing assaults pretty soon. I want that body piece that makes the SH look like a joke.
=)
Lunay
March 26th, 2007, 05:03 AM
That body piece is called Pahluwan Khazagand and I wouldn't be so quick to say it is better than Scorpion Harness, except for Thief, Corsair, and Ranger for its Ranged Accuracy +10. The only difference between the Scorpion Harness and Pahluwan Khazagand is the +2 HP recovery while healing, 5 HP, and evasion or ranged accuracy. The critical hit bonus isn't active unless you have the whole set equipped, which I highly don't recommend doing since there are better gears available for other slots.
Now let's look at the jobs which can equip Pahluwan Khazagand: BST, COR, DRG, MNK, NIN, PUP, RDM, RNG, and THF. 3 jobs that use Ranged Attack often are: THF, RNG, and COR. NIN and RDM might also used Ranged but rarely. Other jobs, not so much.
Jobs which can use Scorpion Harness: BRD, BLU, BST, COR, DRK, DRG, MNK, NIN, PLD, PAL, SAM, THF, and WAR.
Most of these job would benefit from Evasion +10 rather than Ranged Accuracy +10 - except for Samurai, which cannot equip Pahluwan, anyway.
The only jobs that would benefit from Pahluwan over Scorpion are: Corsair, Thief and Ranger. Pahluwan is also a good choice for Puppetmaster since they cannot equip Scorpion Harness. For Thief, I thin Pahluwan for PT and Scorpion Harness outside of PT, since they can equip both.
Michael
March 26th, 2007, 11:35 AM
Er, the set bonus for Pahluwan is Subtle Blow effect. Crit is part of the base bonuses.
I think you're giving evasion entirely too much credit. Same with the R.acc. You don't have to justify every item with it's classes over one single statistic.
My ninja wore his Haubergeon far more than his Harness, once I got it. I kept the Harness around for very specific situations, but more often than not I would just use my Hauby. If you're not supposed to be tanking, then 10eva is just as worthless to you as 10racc. Even if you are tanking, unless it's IT+/++, I found it pretty easy to get away with 30 less eva. And my increased DOT held hate better.
But, not all the jobs with access to both the Harness and the Khazagand also have access to the Haubergeon. I'd say for any class not fully intending to be getting swung at, the Khazagand is a great "free" chest. Free as in you don't pay for it with gil directly. Some people value the fact that they aren't paying for it directly.
Also, it's not like it's a drop, you're not "stealing" it from the couple classes that would make better use of the item as a whole. So meh, why not get it unless you have something better than both?
Oh, and it's much, much prettier. :P
Lunay
March 26th, 2007, 02:03 PM
Oh, wow. I feel really embarrassed about my last post. Michael is absolutely right, I forgot that Subtle Blow is the extra effect, and the Critical Hit rate is part of Khazagand itself. I hardly use my Khazagand since I mainly use Kirin's Osode for my Ranger and Beastmaster (BST can wear Haubergeon, so there's another debate), so, I forgot. Plus, I was intoxicated when I made my last post. I stand corrected. =(
I mainly got Khazagand for my Corsair, which is a job I rarely use anymore since Bard is obviously better and more popular for merit, in my opinion.
Now that I am sober, I can easily see why Khazagand might get used more than Scorpion Harness most of the time, but like Michael said, I think every gear is totally situational and its usage varies with what you are doing; farming, HNM, Gods, merit, etc.
Khazagand is certainly prettier and you can't beat the fact that it's free. It's also quite easy to get since the Assault area with Khazagand is probably the easiest of them all: I spammed Lamia No.13, which is too easy with any form of dispellers.
It is too bad most DD jobs cannot use Khazagand, but they have Amir Korazin instead (ACC+12 EVA+12 Increases Zanshin effect). And the critical hit bonus from Khazagand is nice but it's hard to judge how much nicer it is compared to other body gear because it doesn't say what percetange. Oh, well.. I think, any of the body gear we have mentioned is a good choice.
cris
March 26th, 2007, 02:53 PM
Most evasion gear sucks because it's not SKILL+ (not saying useless). Also after shadow hate update, I find it easier to tank (on exp pts) with attack eqp on a ninja than evasion gear.
FYI: I remember reading on 2ch that Critical Hit % on that armor is 3%, but doesn't affect ranged attacks
Lunay
April 1st, 2007, 11:49 PM
Critical Hit +3% is really wonderful, especially with capped merit and critical hit weapon you get from several KS fights. And yes, I am aware of the difference between Eva and Eva Skill, but I feel the need to defend Scorpion Harness because I'm a bonecrafter. ;p SH is down close to 400k on my server, by the way. Amazing!

And also, I have always wondered if earring like Moldavite (rare/ex earring with magic attack +5, right?) increase elemental ninjutsu magic. Its probably safe to guess, it does.
Also, does anyone know anything about the new event called Celestial Nights? I heard that there won't be any event until each server has enough haiku written. I wonder what this event is and if there are any new prizes.

I lied, I ended up doing Mamool ja Training Grounds quite often. In fact, I'm forming a "static" of sorts to do Mamool ja Training Grounds T5 over and over (it's ridiculously easy, you just talk to NPCs) to get Pahluwan Seraweels now.
I also beat The Celestial Nexus yesterday, which means I'm done with RotZ unless you count Apocalypse Nigh...which...I probably won't do until next summer since I'm being so lax about CoP. Grats to your Yigit Gages and Seraweels. Wow! Is FFXI going for a Super Robot theme now? J/K. ^^; Is that a boss from the ToAU ending? That is wicked looking! Somewhat resembles Tower from FFXII or Iron Giant.
I am overwhelmed from this version update.
New item "soultrapper 2000" which is used for capturing monsters for The Pit.
Grips, which can be used by all jobs.
The new beastmen headgears, which is worthless as expected
I really want a Moogle/Nomad Cap!
Equipment wise, it is kind of disappointing.. except some of the rings and earrings such as Harmonius Earring (HP+25/2STR), Ulthalam's Ring (Acc+4/Attk+4 Assault: STR+4/DEX+4 adds "regen" effect), Harmonius Ring (HP+20/STR+5), Star/Celestial Earring and Ring.
Complete list of items and equipment (http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/2007_-_%2808/27/2007%29_New_Items)
But what made me truly happy is this:
The following adjustments have been made to the beastmaster job:
- Pets summoned with the “Call Beast” ability will now remain for a longer period of time.
*Duration varies for each type of pet.
- Pets not in combat will now gradually regain HP.
It is possible for a beastmaster to increase the rate at which a pet regains HP by using the “Stay” command.
- Beastmasters will no longer be subject to an experience point penalty while using a charmed monster.
O_____O!! I will bet many people will level Beastmaster now and many places will be overcrowded with them. What I am wondering is if this is still relevant when the Beastmaster in a regular PT. Finally, SE gives us Beastmasters some love. Although, it would have been better if they allowed our jug-pet to zone.. oh, well. Edit: I just thought about it and it will no longer be necessary to use Leave before the final blow, making our strategy somewhat different than before. Interesting.
Off to get my version update!

"Balrahn's Ring (Magic Accuracy +4 Assault: INT +4 MND +4 CHR +4 Adds "Refresh" effect)
Ulthalam's Ring (Accuracy +4 Attack +4 Assault: STR +4 DEX +4 Adds "Regen" effect)
Jalzahn's Ring (Ranged Accuracy +6 Ranged Attack +6 Assault: AGI +6 Enhances "Snapshot" effect)"
Are these the mission rings you are talking about Cris? Balrahn's Ring is surely useless outside of Assault, but I don't think the other two is not that bad even outside of Assault. Ulthalam's Ring looks similar to Sniper Ring except you are sacrificing 1 ACC for 4 ATTK, which is a good trade off in my opinion; but everyone seems to be on the 2H weapon bandwagon, so there might be other better rings now for them (possibly DEX? STR? I need to do some research.) I would also use Jalzahn's Ring outside of Assault, too, maybe for BCNM and other events which don't require uber items. For Assault, they are beautiful though!
I'm only on ToAU30 or so.. I'm not even close to the end but I will try to work on that. I did read some spoilers for the ending and it does sound like there is more since that Crown will probably used as a trading item. Same thing with the new Beastmen headgears with horrible stats, which will be used as a spawn item to convert into rare/ex beastmen headgears with Feral Drain effect. Got my Qiqirn Hood btw. :laugh: Really cheap materials (under 15k or so) and it only requires adept clothcraft. I just need a Manta Leather and A.U.Brass Ingot to craft a Lamia Hat, which requires bonecraft with goldsmith and leather sub. Speaking of craft, not many new bone recipes. ^^;
I have read a thread on Alla about someone seeing a Silver Yagudo NM in Castle Otrozja, I wonder what that is about.
As far as the update on BST, I think that is more for allowing people to use BST as a sub. I think, more people will use BST as a sub now and possibly with the new jobs in WoG. I think I will try leveling my Paladin a little bit with BST as a sub. It should work because Paladin can cure themselves. Blue Mage, too!

When you capture a mob it has a level, right? So, higher the level, stronger it is?
Any word on how to obtain the rare/ex beastmen hats? And what is Feral Drain?
Is there a limit to how many capture plates you can carry at once? And is it free?
I am heading to town now and hopefully I will figure this out.
Aern should be insane!
I am thinking Corse or Korrigan for my pet and just add abilities to that. Korrigan with ninja trait! Too bad you can't register an HNM.. or can you?
cris

I don't know how many FP takes or anything since there is no info on it and I didn't log on FFXI yet.
I'm hoping to get the AOE stun from Behemoth
I'm hoping to get the shield from Soulflayer
I'm hoping to get the haste move from Aern
Not sure if those are what you get though.
They all have random levels when you capture them but yeah, just using an example but a Level 20 Tiny Mandagora can kick a level 15 King Behemoth's *** (though you can't get KB, used it as an example)
Any word on how to obtain the rare/ex beastmen hats? And what is Feral Drain?
-don't know
Is there a limit to how many capture plates you can carry at once? And is it free?
-I think you can only capture one mob, but you can capture many traits until you reach max FP
It also seems like you can only capture mobs that BST can Charm

Danju, if you decide to come to Alexander, I can help you with whatever you might need. One thing I am tight about is loaning gil and some of my precious armor/weapon. I don't play much anymore but I can help you with mission, quest, obtaining certain NMs, etc, any time I am on and if I am not busy. Oh, one other thing is I hate anything that has to do with PL (power level), so I will not give nor receive.
I'm not a beggar and I don't agree with power leveling myself. All I'm really looking for are a bunch of connections so I can more easily find a party and complete missions. The last three times I tried playing FFXI it would take hours to find a party only to have the party disband or suck. I don't know if it's my bad luck in finding such parties or what, but I want it to stop.
I'll probably roll a Mithra WHM or WAR on Alexander later tonight, then. In the end I'm planning on being a PLD/WAR. I look forward to playing if you if ever given the chance.

Yeah. War is good to level first in my opinion, especially if you want to become a tank or DD. What I would do is try to solo Monk, Thief, and War to 15 or so, that way you can mix and match these jobs for your sub-job. Finding a PT is always hard depending on the time and situation, but as said in FF Retrospective, I believe that is what makes it more rewarding in the end. If you are sick of waiting for a PT, it is always best to create one of your own, but that can be frustrating as well; I remember back in the day when I was a hardcore leveler, constantly spamming /sea all "level" every second trying to create a PT. Anyway, send a tell to Chobits (Mithra) or Lunay (Tarutaru) any time you find me online (whichever is on)!
Edit:
Jetton (The Pit currency)
1 bronze piece = 1 Jetton
1 silver piece = 10 jettons
1 mythril piece = 30 jettons
1 gold piece = 200 jettons
Im tempted to turn in 25 gold pieces just to see what items are available.
Edit2: Ok, so I turned in 26 gold pieces and these are the items available:
2 Jettons: A Soultrapper or 12 Black Soul Plates
500 Jettons: A Soultrapper 2000 or 12 Blank high-speed Soul Plates
5000 Jettons: A Zoraal Ja's Helm (Vs. Lizards: Increases Feral Drain success), Dartorgor's Coif (Vs Vermins: increases Feral Drain), Lamia No.3's Garland (Vs. Undead: same), or Cacaroon's hood (Vs. Beasts). So, I was wrong about having to trade the craftable beastmen gear into these ones.
Undead and Beast helm may come in handy.. but I'm hesitating to get one because I'm not sure how much it helps... I will have to think about it.

Atomos was also present in the trailer

If it is Dancer, and based on previous FF titles, it will most likely support? I won't speculate any further without any information; nor make lame Dance jokes like everybody else seems to be doing on Alla and KI. ^^;
Cris, which trailer do you speak of? I heard that there is a newer trailer of WoG from the Tokyo Game Show which showed a small small clip of Dance in action. I looked for this trailer but with no luck.
I would really like to see a new tank job or soloist. (The latter probably highly unlikely but still..)

Dancer was hardly a support char, it was melee with enfeebs

Like I said, it is very hard to speculate whether it will be a mix of DD/enfeebles like in the past FF games, but again, if it is Dancer, I am assuming the role it will play in FFXI will be support/back-line job. DD who can enfeeble will be interesting but knowing Square-Enix, I highly doubt they will create a job who will excel at both, hence, if this is the case, it will be like COR (B or C+ rating in marksmanship?). COR is certainly not bad in the DD department, but I still see it as support.
Where can I check out this trailer that you saw?

We play on Asura if you're interested. I'm actually gonna be getting my Samurai class soon so I'd be able to party the low levels with you. if you want to raise melee or tank, raise WAR first for subjob. Depending on the party and your melee profession, you want to consider THF as well
if you want to do a mage, WHM and BLM then RDM later on for subjob
FYI, these are for exp pt setups. Once you do end-game stuff, subjobs can vary a lot depending on what your LS wants (i.e. PLD/NIN, MNK/SAM, THF/SAM, WAR/DRG, etc)

If anyone is ever on Alexander please feel free to send a /tell to Chobits or Lunay. I will be more than happy to assist you with what I can. You want Bounding Boots from Mr. Lizzy? You got it! Empress Hairpin? No problem! Need your sub-job items? Easy. Also, I'm leveling my final 3 jobs (drg, mnk, and blu) just to have all jobs to at least lvl37, preparing for the upcoming expansion, so we may possibly PT together as well.
Speaking of leveling, one simple suggestion which will help greatly is to always get a signet since it gives you bonuses now:
Healing HP+ (while resting)
Bonus EXP in smaller PT
Increased DEF and EVA against attacks from auto-target. (I heard that this will only apply to "even match" or below monsters)
No TP loss while resting (this one is especially great for PLD)
What I would do is once you have accumulated 1000 conquest points, go ahead and purchase an Empress Band. This ring will grant you bonus to your EXP earned by 50%. The ring has 7 charges and you you can use it every 16 hours, which can be recharged with more conquest points once per conquest tally. With this ring, it will make leveling a little bit more faster.

Monk is really awesome! But like Cris said, I think you should raise WAR first to 18 at least, that way you have access to your support-job and you can use it for your Monk later, or you can just raise Monk to 18 and then get a sub-job but I would imagine getting a PT will be hard as a sub-less Monk because most people want provoke at least. It is always harder at the beginning, especially, since you have to worry about so many things, but once you start to accomplish those things little by little, you will start enjoying the game more. And I hope to help you with a few of those things.
Anyway, since you are raising Monk, I can craft you a nice Hand-to-Hand weapon and possibly some armors for you to get you started in the right direction!
Yeah, you can't send a tell to someone who is offline. You can leave a message, but that is only if you are in someones friends list. I will log on in a few, ok?

As a former paladin, I have to say that is crazy. Being able to start a fight with a WS would make tanking so much easier in the beginning. I was a bit too strong, due to my equipment, drinks, and potions, so monsters had trouble doing damage to me, and I rarely needed to heal as a result(WHM's got a free ride when I was around), which left me with provoke and my sword to hold aggro early on. That was more than doable, so with this change I imagine tanking got a lot easier.
Anyway, I've been following this thread for a while, but I've recently seen a few things that interested me. I may be misunderstanding this, but it looks like FFXI got a lot easier for soloing in the beginning. Is that correct? Those Signet changes you listed look incredible, and I guess conquest points are actually useful now? I never had anything good to buy with them back when I played a few years ago. Perhaps the most important question I can ask is, do moat carp still sell for 4000 a stack the second you put them on the AH?
I loved FFXI so much. Everything about it, the playonline browser itself, the in-game message/mail system, the community, the crafting based economy...yeah, everything. But, I eventually quit because my friends were gone, and no one wanted a warrior/thf combo. Whenever I did actually get a group, I was able to prove myself, but unfortunately people saw "war/thf" as my job and wanted Dark Knights, Thieves, and Rangers for that position so I rarely got a party.
As I loved playing my warrior/thf more than any other class, this was a huge problem. I had such a fantastic ride playing FFXI that I didn't want my last memories of the game to be so unpleasant. I decided that I had a great experience from beginning to end, and it was time to move on. I deleted my character and then I walked away for a few years. I tried getting back into it a while ago, but I noticed that getting into a group was even worse than it was back in the day, especially for a new player. However, with those signet changes, I can see myself soloing(I used to solo to about 15 anyway) to get my sub-job no problem, and then I can just jump back in from there.
So, is it easier to start off now? Sorry for all of the questions, but FFXI has never been forgiving to new characters, and that is what has kept me from playing all this time, so if the situation is different now, I want to play again.

Faster healing sounds like less downtime, although I don't know how much. No loss of TP means being able to save it up between battles, which sounds like more Weapon Skills or bigger Weapon Skills when you need them. I'm not quite sure what that auto-target thing is supposed to mean, but if it means that you have higher DEF and EVA to monsters that are even or lower to you, that sure sounds like a nice boost.
Edit- Not to mention that ring sounds really nice.
I'm not planning on soloing past 15 or so(so I can avoid the lizard groups), and from what I know of the pre-15 game, those things sound like it would make it a lot easier, if I'm understanding them correctly. The TP thing alone would make a huge impact if you're fighting some weak monster where a Weapon Skill would take a large percent of its health.
FYI, WAR/THF is actually useful now because of the new Two-Handed Weapon update along with "Grips"
I don't suppose you could elaborate on what both of those are? The update and the grips, please.
Second Edit- I'm going through the FFXI site, looking at the updates since I've stopped playing, and all I have to say is:
This will take more time than I thought it would, as I don't even know what most of these things are, but I found the two-handed weapon thing:
The following adjustments have been made to two-handed weapons:
- Two-handed weapons will now receive larger benefits from a character’s attributes, and will also inflict more damage when facing higher-level opponents or enemies with high defense.
I get the more damage part, and I can see what grips are, but I don't get the "Two-handed weapons will now receive larger benefits from a character’s attributes" part. Does that mean something like 1 point of STR gives more of a benefit?

Play-online pretty much explains the details (as you pasted) but
Signet healing,
It doesn't really speed things up too much because hHP works like the hMP, which gains for every tick of healing you get while /heal. Basically, you can only see a big jump of healing when you /heal for a long time (i.e. when a BLM hMP for 5minutes during weakened, hMP heals like 100mp).
The two handed weapon is very recent. It basically has use now unlike before the up-date and you can actually notice the damage difference on high level mobs and high defense like wamourachampola (or however you spell it) Kindred whatever in Dynamis - Xarcarbard and so on. I mean it's really noticeable.
Grips = basically you can stats on two hands now even if you're using two handed weapon. Which was one of the big disadvantages of two-handed weapons, up until now. Although they do need more variations, but I'm sure that'll happen.

I've got a question for anyone who still seriously plays the game. Is it still worth starting out as a new player? I'm far more interested in this than I am WoW, but I wouldn't want to start out playing a game which puts such a heavy emphasis on being in a party if the population has declined to the point where that is becoming difficult.
If I were to start playing now, would I still get the full experience? Is this game likely to remain viable for years to come, or are they gonna start winding it up at some point soon? I'm really tempted to try it out, but... I'm still not sure.
cris

It's an MMO game so eventually the game will only end up being fun if you have friends to play with and also being able to do end-game stuff.
Which basically means if you have a crappy communist linkshell (guild), you're most likely not going to enjoy it but if you can find a great linkshell you'll have loads of fun. Same goes for WoW and any other MMO's. Only difference between WoW and FFXI is that WoW is heavily emphasized on Solo play (which I don't like) and FFXI is heavily emphasized on group tactics. About being able to play...that would depend on server and time you can play imo. Sometimes it's hard to get a PT going for exp so you want to be able to farm guild, craft, etc while you seek for a party or make your own. If you're out of town, just make sure you are able to warp back to the homepoint/town

As for Two-handed weapon changes, isn't it 1 DEX = 1 ACC & 1 STR = 1 ATTK, Cris? I don't know what the latest two-handed update that "fixed something" was all about, but two-handed weapon should still be powerful, and the addition of Grips was a treat even to mages who usually are seen wielding elemental staves (level 51+, though).
I say it's never too late to start as a new player, since many new people join everyday. Although, it seems finding a party below level 20 might take some time due to lack of low level jobs, but I guess it is all situational-- like which server and which time of day you play (JP, EU, NA, etc).* But soloing to level 15 is not that hard at all once you get the hang of it. And with the upcoming expansion, Wings of the Goddess, there will be many parties even for the lower levels; and there is no sign of FFXI fading any time soon. Difficulty of finding a party is not due to the lack of population, but I think, it has more to do with which job(s) the players are leveling and what is available.
Speaking of experiencing the game to the fullest, FFXI has too many things to do - now more than ever - and I can see how it can be frustratingly overwhelming to most of the new players. To top it off, FFXI is not user-friendly to begin with. But like I said previously, if you set one goal at a time and start accomplishing those things little by little, you will slowly start experiencing the beauty of FFXI. It's literally a test of your dedication and patience.
Edit: * I didn't mean to repeat this comment, as I was also typing at the same time, it seems. Sorry!

I'm not expecting any of those individual things to have a significant impact, but they still contribute something. Even if it is only +1 to your starting hHP, it still has an effect. Of course, I hope it isn't actually +1, because that...wouldn't be all that good. -_-;

Did something happen to two handed weapons to make them unpopular? I haven't played in a very long time, but I don't remember there ever being a problem with them, so it seems odd that you would say "basically has use now unlike before the up-date." Did they ever nerf two handed weapons or something?

Well buy nerf I meant that compared to single handed weapons, they were hardly use if the job had the option for it (Basically WAR/NIN). If anything at end game, it was used as WAR/THF while building TP and SAing Tiamat from the back or something of that nature.
Now you can use it in various situations and also, the damage difference between duel wielding and double holding is very noticeable on high defense mobs. In fact yesterday, we took down PLD NM in Dynamis - Xarcarbard 50% to 15% in a single WS and about the same on few other mobs.

Scholar is going to be sweet!
Scholar
Scholars have knowledge of both White and Black magic, as well their own exclusive set of spells. They are not exceptional mages, but rather combine abilities from various schools. Scholars also appear to have some use as a support job to other magic-using classes.
By the way, Scholars will not be hitting anything with books. Their basic abilities are “White Grimoire” and “Black Grimoire.” They function similar to a Samurai’s Hasso and Seigan, in that the Scholar chooses between wielding White Magic and Black Magic, but not both at once. There is no time limit on this ability, so technically you could remain on one set of magic forever.
“White Grimoire” lets one specialize in White Magic by lowering cast times and reducing MP cost. In addition, Healing, Divine, and Enhancing skills are all raised, and unique abilities are unlocked. Conversely, Black Magic spells have their MP cost increased and casting time lengthened. However, you are free to switch back and forth at any time.
With Scholar as a support job, using the Black Grimoire will boost those respective skills, perhaps allowing White Mages to net better results with Drain and Aspir, or land the oft-resisted Paralyze on an enemy.
Scholar brings with it a number of abilities to help one skillfully manipulate magic. There are a set of abilities that can only be used with either the White or Black Grimoire. Similar to a Summoner's Blood Pacts, these abilities are tied to the same recast timer. However, a Scholar has the ability to store up uses of these abilities. For example, say you have an ability with a recast timer of 4 minutes. Normally you would activate it and then have to wait 4 minutes to use it once again. However, a Scholar is able to store up these recasts to a maximum of 3 consecutive activations.
There are also various spells that come unique to Scholar. One allows you to change the designated weather for a target party member. Another causes a great amount of DoT damage. Weather changing magic may not seem like much, but it is great for accommodating preferred spells in battle. Not only does it enhance magic accuracy and damage, but can activate certain pieces of armor.

I would've never guessed Scholar as one of the new jobs since I just couldn't see how Square-Enix would incorporate its abilities into FFXI- since we already know the enemy's HP and weakness. But from reading what little details that are available, I can say that I'm already taking a liking to Scholar. I am curious about its weather changing magic since I have some 'weather only' gears which may actually be useful now.
Source: FFXI Creator Blog
Further details has arrived about the Dancer job. We've got them below for you:
Dancer
Dancers have three basic types of moves:
"Dances" are used to heal party members.
"Steps" are used to enfeeble targets.
"Flourishes" are used in conjunction with Steps to deal various special effects.
Since these abilities all require TP, dancers will be required to move to the front lines and engage in melee battle with enemies.
There are also dances which put enemies into a "daze", allowing other party members enganged with the target to drain its HP, etc.
I really think Dancer is also looking good. Now, all we need is a tank job! Other than the new jobs, I am looking forward to more macro palettes and more inventory space. They really need to do something about inventory space since there are just too many rare/ex items. ^^;
About two more weeks to go until the expansion! And about 10 days until the FFXI Festival in Anaheim. {Excitement}

Dancer will be powerful as THFs, but with support abilities i guess

Well, since the trailer showed Dancer using Evisceration, we already know they will at least have a C+ rating (230) in dagger.
Just for comparison, Corsair ranks second in Dagger skill with a rating of B+ (256), followed by Red Mage with a rating of B (250). Bard, Ranger and Warrior are tied in third place with a rating of B- (240).
But even if Dancer does rank up high in Dagger skill, will it actually be useful as a DD? I bring this question up because Dancing Edge and Shark Bite, as we all know, is exclusive to Thief. So, which other WS will Dancer use? Viper Bite? Ok, fine use Viper Bite, but how will it fair without Sneak Attack? Even so, they will be forced to use Viper Bite until Evisceration which isn't available until level 67(?) for Thiefs, and that is IF you have previously unlocked it with other jobs. At this point, the only way I can see Dancer being effective as a DD is if they have their own new exclusive dagger WS or have some other new (or old) high ranked skill. Not to mention their TP going towards their other abilities.
cris
November 5th, 2007, 03:09 PM
Well the TP drain isn't much, it's like 20TP..but in return it does benenfits that works with party members (acc down/up, cure, atk up etc).
Also, each job has new WS, just don't know if it's high level, low level or even both. As for the WS itself, I don't think WSing is really something to be concerened for Dancer, it will be more on part level with Cor's WS.
Scholar subjob rapes it seems according to SE. i.e. being ableto paralyze as a WHM/SCH on a NM
Lunay
November 5th, 2007, 07:33 PM
So they will get a new WS then? That is good to hear because I am really liking the two newly announced jobs. Instead of relying on refresh and sitting on your lazy *** trying to get mp, you can have fun while engaged in combat working for TP. I think Square-Enix really thought things out this time, but we will see when the expansion is out.
And I can already see it now, /SCH for all mage jobs.
cris
November 6th, 2007, 02:07 PM
It really depends on how much you can benefit from Scholar as a sub job. They only gave WHM example with it being to enfeeble some higher level mobs, but didn't say anything like a HNM level.
Also for solo on a BLM, BLM/RDM can't be beat and that's a guarantee.
My guesses = Dancers will rely on mostly AGI seconded by CHR and Scholars are both INT and MND equally. My guess is that SCH will be very similiar to RDM in both Main Job and Sub Job, while Dancers will be THF like damage, but plays like COR and BLU combined (minus the actual BLUE MAGIC physics)

I was making my judgment based on the information Ketaru had posted about Scholar- increased potency of spells. Also, I don't know where I have read this information, and I don't know how much of it is true or maybe I misread it, but I've read that at the Osaka Festival, Scholar was seen casting Stoneskin in just a fraction of a time. Could it be that it can also shorten recast times of certain spells? If that is true indeed, along with its weather changing spell and increased potency, I can see /SCH replacing the trend of merit BLM/RDM with a few people. But like you said, I guess it will depend on how much they will actually benefit from Scholar as a sub-job.
As for Dancer, I have some doubts as to whether it can be fully effective as a DD. Maybe that is because we just don't have enough information to verify it. I do however feel that Dancer might play like Cor, but lighter on the DD side (except for when trying to accumulate TP, of course). I say this because I feel that Dancer will be too powerful if it were given both excellent melee skills and excellent support abilities. I'm not saying it can't and won't DD. I just think it will focus more on support. I guess we will find out soon enough. {Excitement}

Scholar was seen casting Stoneskin in just a fraction of a time
It finished stoneskin @ 60% but question now is how strong is it =-P
Also without a duobt Dancer's DD = THF or around there. It's more of a THF + COR if you want to put it that way.

Ok, since you are so confident, I will take your word for now. The only comparison I can make between Dancer and Thief at this moment is that they both seem to use dagger, and I can see majority of the population subbing Ninja 20+. Defintely /SAM at 60 though. But my doubt for how effective Dancer can be as a DD still remain at this point. How would you incorporate Dancer into your, let's say, EXP PT? I still think most people will still prefer other DD's.
cris
November 7th, 2007, 04:26 PM
Dancer DD is as good as THF DD is what I'm saying minus the heavy blow damage of SA or TA, but they have things that THFs can't do which can also benefit the party in a different way.
It also stacks with BLM/WHM magics, like how songs stacks on top of them.
As their quality in a EXP PT, I'm sure having them will slow down the exp to vs. something like a WAR NIN MNK RNG RDM BRD pt, but hey...pretty much all other job fits into that specification.

Hey folks, I tried playing FFXI last year, but the problem was there wasn't enough people on the server I was on (leviathan,) for example I'd at best be able to make a party of four tanks my level. Is it my problem alone, or do others have this problem? Am I doing something wrong? I figured it must be a only-prons problem because they're releasing a new Expansion...

A lot of people have been complaining about the situation where a lot of older players take jobs up to higher levels then just stick with those jobs. That means there isn't a constant supplies of people at lower levels to party with.
It also doesn't help that, combining the fact that there are more information about jobs available (as opposed to everybody being new to the game and not knowing the particular limits of their jobs) and just being more powerful by virtue of new gear and updates to abilities, people are soloing longer and more often. I started the game fairly early and was completely caught by surprise to find out that people actually solo well into the Qufim levels (20-25s) these days.

I couldn't solo jack after level 13 when I played (I was a THF). So the game is pretty much for poeple who've been playing the game since the old days when there was a real population? :(

Er, some people same to make do and find parties (complete with power levellers...).
I think it's a little harder for new people to solo. Most of them probably use /NIN subjob, which cannot be opened until level 30 on a basic job. Some use /BST which...also cannot be opened until level 30.
In conclusion, yeah. At this point of the game, new players tend to have it tough without help from on high. :(

As for lack of players to make a PT, I think, this has something to do with the fact that many people can - and will - level up faster compared to the 'old days'. Therefore, if you don't go with the right flow of players around your level, you might get left behind. But finding people to level up with is situational, like which server time and who is leveling a certain job, as we previously mentioned in our past post.
As for soloing, it is harder for new players, especially if you don't have the right sub-job available (as Ketaru mentioned), and possibly lack of funding. I am currently raising Blue Mage at the moment (at 65 currently) and I was forced to solo most of the levels due to lack of players to make a PT at certain levels; but again, I do it with /BST. Sometimes, you just don't have the required job - such as a tank *cough* - available to make a PT and it can be very frustrating. (Picture me doing a /sea all "level" literally every second, while pulling my hair out to create an awesome PT). But on my server, I see that the best time to make a PT at my current level of 65 is during JP prime time (approximately 2 AM PST and beyond). During NA morning and early evening time, it is dead. So, what I woud do is solo during NA time, and make a PT when the JP players log-on. So, what I am trying to say is you will have to make sacrifices (like sleep and social life ;p ) and work with certain server time if you are truly serious about this game.
As for new players relying on a high level for help, I think this game has always been like that, so nothing has really changed. You will always need the help from others regardless of whether you are a new player or not.

SCH has tier IV spells.... probably doesn't have good skills though. I'm going to guess C area in the skills, at least for Elemental
******SCH magic skills are "D". If you have a book open, that specific category will boost to "B"
2hr (For the duration, both White and Black magic is enhanced. Also allow use of War Scrolls without using charge)
White Grimoire (1min recast - Gives skill boost to Divine/Healing/Enhancing skills)
Black Grimoire (Most likely 1min recast - Gives skill boost to Enfeebling/Elemental/Dark skills)
??? (Ability increases any DoT damage on target while halving effect time)
War Scrolls (Ability to use magic effectively during corresponding Grimoire)
- ??? - (Allows use of next WHM magic at half MP cost)
- ??? - (Allows use of next WHM magic at half cast/recast time)
- ??? - (Allows increased effectiveness of next WHM magic)
- Divine ??? - (Allows Curing or Enhancing single-target spell to become AoE spells. Most likely MP cost 3x, Spell Recast 2x)
- ??? - (Allows use of next BLM magic at half MP cost)
- ??? - (Allows use of next BLM magic at half cast/recast time)
- ??? - (Allows increased effectiveness of next BLM magic)
- Elemental ??? - (Allows Enfeebling or Dark-based single-target spell to become AoE spells. MP cost 3x, Spell Recast 2x)
By default Scholar main has 3 charges at 4:00 recast. You can mix-and-match War Scrolls, ie. you can use 2 charges, one half-cast one AOE-cast, on the same spell, but you'd be left with 1 charge left and have to wait 4:00 before you regain a charge.
Half-cast spells fire at 37.5% or so. Stoneskin casted at roughly 3.5 sec or so in the demo.
Weather-changing spells are considered Black Magic. Scholar will also get access to new DoT spells that are supposedly more powerful than existing ones.
-------
Spell list active during White Grimoire
Cure I (7MP)-IV
Raise I-II
Poisona
Paralyna
Blindna
Silena
Stona
Viruna
Cursna (27MP)
Dia I-II
Diaga
Protect I-IV
Shell I-IV
Blink (18MP)
Stoneskin (27MP)
Aquaveil
Paralyze
Silence
Barfire/bliz/aero/stone/thunder/water
(and about 24 more spells that aren't shown)
So it seems White Grimoire has an effect of -10% MP spell use for WHM spells. Since I didn't see Curaga, it's a good indication that Osaka (demo char) wasn't /WHM.
For Black Grimoire
Fire I (22MP)-IV
Blizzard I-IV
Aero I-IV
Stone I (9MP)-IV
Thunder I-IV
Water I-IV
Gravity (72MP)
Poison
Bio I-II
Drain
Aspir
Blaze Spikes
Sleep
Bind
Dispel
Stone Weather Spell?
(and maybe another 7 spells)
The reason Gravity is 72MP is because the Elemental ??? ability was active. Apparently it requires use of 3x MP and recast is 2x. Since Osaka did not have access to -ga either, that means that she wasn't /BLM (but still got access to Drain and Aspir).
And unfortunately, it does seem that the charges are going to work like Assult tags. Max of 3 up, 4:00 to recharge one, as I distinctly heard the person say "it's going to require 4 min recast times 3" when describing it.
--------------------------------------------------------------
DANCER:
This info is what I've been able to glean so far from the Osaka event.
Dancer JA
Trance (probable 2hr)
Samba Mode (Self-buff move)
- Drain Samba (10TP)
- Drain Samba II
- Drain Samba III
- Aspir Samba
- Aspir Samba II
- Haste Samba
Waltz Mode (Heals PT member)
Gigue Mode (Gives special status to self)
Step (required to use Flourish)
- Quick Step (10TP (Lv.1 Step) - Evasion Down effect)
- Box Step (10TP - Defense Down effect)
- Stutter Step (10TP - Magic Evasion Down effect)
Flourish
- A.Flourish (1 Step - Provoke Effect)
- D.Flourish
- R.Flourish
- V.Flourish
- B.Flourish
- W.Flourish
They said that various Flourish may require more than one level of step, and that some of the effect was to enhance WSes, convert the steps into TP, or open a particular SC. Some of the stuff I could not see because portions of the screen were obscured.

I'm at the FFXI Festival in Anaheim right now and these are the names of Scholar's abilities (I didn't include Dancer's because that information is already widely available):
Penury - Reduces magic cost by 50%
Celerity - reduce casting time by 50%
Rapture - Potency for WHM spells
Accession - Extend something of white mage spells (I didn't get too detailed while taking notes) but MP is tripled and the casting (or recast) time is doubled.
Same as the above for BLM spells, but different names:
Pasimony - cost reduced 50%
Alacrity - ""
Ebullience - ""
Manifestation - ""
Tabula Rasa - WHM & BLM capabilities, charge free (again, i was taking quick notes so some of it may not make sense)
Light Arts - duh.
Dark Arts - again, duh
Stragems - *there are many sub menus and I forgot which goes where.. ^^;; Therefore, some of these may be out of order.*
The Wings of the Goddess tour I've played had 20 new book macros. I have also tried Dancer, and the Animated Flourish (provoke) missed quit often. I was shocked to find out that provoke can miss! The Dancer I have played was using a Ninja sub, with heavy ACC gears such as Peacock Charm and Sniper's Ring +1. Scholar only had Dark Staff equipped as a weapon. Both of these had a promotional armor with defense only. As for Dancer, it also requires something called "finishing moves". I loved the fact that it also had Chocobo Jig (movement speed + just like Chocobo Mazurka).
Also took a look at the new Wings of the Goddess map. It is very similar to Conquest but it has its own nation tally system called Campaign. The map is almost exactly the same as Conquest, but with new area points called Ronfaure Front, Gusraberg (not a mispelling), and one for Windy (front?). There were also Beastmen area points named Orcish Hosts, Quadav Shieldwarriors, and Yagudo Theomilitary - one for each nation.
I fought new mobs such as Rafflesia and other ones I can't remember at this moment.
Now I am off to participate in the "Atomos Challenge". The new festival location is quite nice since its held inside a Hilton hotel. Will post later if I find out any new information.
In the end, I feel that there were too many abilities for both of these jobs and I feel like Dancer is a bit overpowered with so many capabilities. I did not see any new WS for Dancer, but it was only a lvl.60 Dancer; all the WS minus Dancing Edge, Shark Bite, and Evisceration.

You'd probably have to put in a credit card info, but whether it has to be legit info, i'm not sure. You can buy the 30 day trials at EB/Gamestop for $1.99 if you really want to try it out.
I've started back up playing the game. Unfortunately my main character (in which i put 700 hours on in two months) has been deleted. So im stuck with my rank 2 lvl 35 DRK/War with no synth skills. At least its got some good equipment and over a million in gil, so it shouldn't be too hard to get back on my feet.

I'm going to go hunt for my copy of Wings of the Goddess later today. Too bad we don't actually get to explore the content until Wednesday, though. For those who are starting now or returning, now is definitely a good time to do so since people will be all over the new jobs. I myself will probably level Dancer, but I am undecided because I want to take BLU to 75 first; 69 now and I didn't make it in time for the expansion. But new monsters mean new BLU spells and I am excited. New moonster to Charm as well!
I was browsing the AH to see what weapons are available for Dancer. To my surprise, Dancer cannot equip most of the low level daggers, but instead, there are many H2H available for them. From my quick browsing, I also saw that Dancer can equip bilbo and degen swords. This doesn't make sense since Dancer's strongest melee skill is dagger, which is a B-something; along with parrying and evasion.
I have to thank SQEX for adding giving new abilities to two of my favorite jobs, BST and RNG. I tested Snarl for BST and it can be useful, especially for those who love subbing ninja. The pet HP recovery rate for Stay has been greatly increased and I can now see myself using it more often. It would have been even nicer if it wasn't exclusive to jug pet, but I can see how it might get abused otherwise.
I haven't tested Velocity Shot, yet, but I heard that the effect lasts longer than the recast time and that is good news.
Allowing players to invite friends into your mog house is just too funny. What is awesome is that no more switching your mog house residential area.
These are some of the things I am excited over so far. What are you guys currently excited about and what are you looking forward to?
