No, that's the problem, I did it all the ways the others said. Most of the time only one RNG and no SMNs. So yeah, never worked. And that number is accurate.

^ PK = Player Kill
Yes, it will take a long time... When you hit 18 you will get a sub so you will be required to level that as well. I would level warrior if I were you... since you will want to use Ninja as a sub... and when you level you Ninja you will be expected to use a war sub. It all depends on which job you want to raise as a main. So if you want to be a tank most likely a war sub. If a melee, most likely Thief or Ninja. If you have any other question post it here. Any of these people are willing to help you.
But am I "obligated" to actually use my other sub jobs? I mean being a thief is really cool, especially since I now got that "Sneak Attack".... :)
Well my only questions refer to abreviations such as DD (Damage dealer), and other abreviations like that. Each time I'm in a new party I always ask everybody (exemple) : "Hey, what does IT mean? What does that mean?"
So if you have any abreviations I might not heard yet, please post them, that would help! Thanks... ^_^

There might be a better thread of abbreviations, but here are some common ones:
IT - [Incredibly Tough] It's the highest difficulty that an experience mob can be when you "check" them. You probably do this often as a THF when you pull. IT++ means Incredibly Tough with high evasion and defense.
VT - [Very Tough] 1 step below IT
T - [Tough] 1 step below VT
EM - [Even Match] 1 step below T
DC - [Decent Challenge] 1 step below EM
or [Disconnected] when a player gets logged off randomly for whatever reason and disappears. For example: "PLD DCed"
EP - [Easy Prey] 1 step below DC
AFK - [Away from Keyboard] person is just not able to respond for a bit because he/she is doing something like eating or smoking, etc.
WC - [Water Closet] I think that's right...Japanese term for bathroom break. Kinda like AFK but more specific
MPK - [Mobile Player Kill] A method (illegal, actually) for killing other players by pulling mobs near them, intending to have them aggro the other players. This is usually done by zoning them, getting yourself killed near others, warping in mid-pull, or by BSTs with one of their Job Abilities.
NM - [Notorious Monster] Any mob that checks "Impossible to Gauge." They are usually tougher than the level they rate and usually drops rare items. Most require some prerequisites just to make them spawn.
HNM - [Hyper Notorious Monster] Same as above, but much tougher. Usually, mobs that require parties/alliances of 65+ people. Gods are also considered HNMs.
RMT - [Real Money Trade] Refers to players who earn gil (usually camping NMs 24/7) to sell to other players for real money. These players are also known as "gil-sellers" and the buyers are "gil-buyers."
SC - [Skillchain] Example: Power Slash >> Viper Bite is a skillchain because it produces a Magic Burst.
MB - [Magic Burst] Example: Power Slash >> Viper Bite = Distortion. "Distortion" is the MB.
WB - [Welcome Back] After a person goes AFK and returns, people greet them with WB.
SATA - [Sneak Attack Trick Attack] A THF's stacked job abililites which you will be doing often at 30+
There's more, but that's all I got for now.

I'm about 80% certain there's..
Oh, right, there's also Mob, or Mobile, which means Monster, and MB is, on Levi at least, parlance for the spell(s) that are fired off after the SC lands, since the SC is the effect from combining WS (I.E. Power Slash -> Viper Bite is the Distortion SC; If the BLM fires off Ice or Water spells after the SC lands, his spells will get boosted, and that's called a Magic Burst). WC is also British in origin, though I'm not sure why we picked it up.
I recommend you sub MNK from 1-30 on THF, personally. Use H2H, and just spam Boost whenever you can for a strong opening SATA. Make sure you keep Dagger capped though (The number should be blue in the skill box, and you'll have to do it again after every level)
30-33 is when a WAR sub is the flat out best, and you can use swords, or just H2H or daggers. Post 33, you can use a NIN sub, although NIN doesn't really come into its own until 50. You don't HAVE to change subs, though you'll have a hard time picking up invites if you're not /WAR or /NIN post 33, and you really should be using a Dagger by then. Viper Bite will be the WS you use exclusively while exping until 59 =D

But am I "obligated" to actually use my other sub jobs? I mean being a thief is really cool, especially since I now got that "Sneak Attack".... :) ^_^
Sub job will increase your potential. Once you hit 18, you can choose a sub so Thief/???. Let's say you sub Monk when you hit 18 with your thief. When you sub a job you are capable of using half of your main job's level. So 18 Thief devide that in half is lvl 9 sub. So if you raise your Monk to LVL 10 and sub it with Thief it will be 18 Thief / 9 Monk (even if it's a LVL 10 as a main, sub can only give you half the level of your main.) I apologize if I did not make any sense.

^Oooh cool, I thought that we had to start at 1 again by subbing...
That's cool, I just reached lvl 17...
I still have alot of questions, here's what I can remember:
-What does WS stand for? RPGuru1331 said "Viperbite" is the WS that I will use more often after lvl 30.
-How come sometimes, when I win a battle with a party, just above the number of xp gained, is written this: "#1 EXP Chain!" ?
-How do lots in parties work? You have to choose the highest number, or what?
-Someone in a party told me that THF is weak until lvl 30. Is that true? I thought THF was really lame and hard from lvl 1-15, but once I got that Sneak Attack, it made life easier.

Weapon Skill
-How come sometimes, when I win a battle with a party, just above the number of xp gained, is written this: "#1 EXP Chain!" ?
If you kill mobs within a short time period, you will gain extra exp and this is called a exp chain. I have seen it go up to chain 6, but this was long time ago before I semi-quit. And the most exp I have gotten from one mob kill is around 390 exp and it was only chain 3. We were fighting extra IT mobs and we had an uber PT so we were even chaining them. 300+ everytime. Leveled from 53 to 55 like in 2 hours I think, it was amazing. Coincidentally I was a Thief.
-How do lots in parties work? You have to choose the highest number, or what?
Treasure lot is usually used when multiple players in a PT needs a key or an item, or for valuable items. The highest lot wins that item.
-Someone in a party told me that THF is weak until lvl 30. Is that true? I thought THF was really lame and hard from lvl 1-15, but once I got that Sneak Attack, it made life easier.
What that person mean't is that full DMG potential of Thief is not reached until LVL 30. That is when you will get Trick Attack. And a few levels later you will get Viperbite. Sneak + Trick Attack + Viperbite is really awesome. Wait until you get Dancing Edge at 60 something. Thief is also a good sub for melee, since you can use Sneak and Trick. Hide and Flee is awesome too. And 'steal' for mythril coins and gold coins.

I assumed it has something to do with the Giraffe/Dhalmel DNA you guys had from the crossbreeding. It must be a pain finding turtlenecks that fit on you guys =D
Also, SE ended up answering my question at that Hawaii iGames expo.
(Allakhazam) How much of the game is affected by elemental direction? Does it affect synthing? Magic? skill-ups?
(Tanaka)
Yes, of course direction does take affect. There are two types of elemental effects, one being normal and the other being an extreme condition that will directly take affect on battles. As for synthsis, I have no comment. Try them out for yourselves and let's see what happens.
Alla had a thread up on what questions you'd like asked, and I popped that one there. It's not the one I cared about though (The effective difference between +Eva and +Eva Skill)

Well, I've gotten my 3rd sub ready for my RDM just last week. So far I have /WHM, /BLM and /DRK. Still need /NIN but I need to get an Emperor's Hairpin and save some gil for it. I'm almost ready to fight Kirin for the first time with my Sky LS and have gotten to fight most of the trigger NMs and Genbu twice. Question to those who fought Kirin or other HNMs that grant you a title:
Do you only receive the title if you:
A) are in the main alliance when you engage Kirin?
B) are in the main alliance when you defeat Kirin?
C) both B and C?
D) are in the main alliance at any time?
E) other?
Anyway, I'm finally getting ready to do more stuff endgame and I really want to try to get to Sea as well. I had a chance to see Divine Might when my brother (70 BLM) joined an alliance for it...BLM only, of course (lucky, hehe). They actually killed Ark Angel EV on the first round of casting with only GK left standing with 1/4 life. I'd like to complete that as well and get the NIN earring but I'd also like to try it with a "normal" alliance for the challenge. That'd be really cool to accomplish it that way.

Ok I got some other questions...
-If I type "/si" (not sit), what is suppose to happen? It was in the "Tab" list.
-What are the 3 items I need to get the sub-job ability....? I know I got 2 of them, the skull, the crab one, and I need one more, I dunno what it is...
-I think I'll sub a BST or a NIN once I reach LVL 30. Wich one is better? And how can we have NIN as a job?
-What am I suppose to type in Macro so that it can work?
-Is the expansion pack (Chains of Promathia) worth buying?

If I were to take a guess, it'd be /yes variant for EU players.
-What are the 3 items I need to get the sub-job ability....? I know I got 2 of them, the skull, the crab one, and I need one more, I dunno what it is...
Damselfly Worm. They usually drop in exp.
-I think I'll sub a BST or a NIN once I reach LVL 30. Wich one is better? And how can we have NIN as a job?
BST sub, if you don't have it higher up then your main, is completely and utterly useless. There's a curious phenomenon where if BST higher level then the level it's subbed at (Say, a 60 BST subbing it on 30 WHM/15 BST), you will charm either as a BST of your main's level, or as if you were on BST main, whichever is lower. For instance, I'm a 56 THF, with a 30 BST. If I subbed it, I'd charm as well as a 30 BST, even though my sub level is 28. If I were a 56 BST, I'd charm as well as a BST of my THF's level, CHR differences notwithstanding. Even then, there'd have to be nearly even level mobs in the zone I was going to exp in, which are fairly rare. In other words, don't sub BST. The best THF subs for standard exp are NIN and WAR. NIN for an offhand +stat dagger, WAR for Berserk.
-What am I suppose to type in Macro so that it can work?
You put in the text commands. /ma is the opening for magic, /ws for weapon skills, /ja for job abilities, then the name of the command in quotes, then the target (Either you, or a mob, in most cases).
EX: /ja "Perfect Dodge" <me>
-Is the expansion pack (Chains of Promathia) worth buying?
I'd wait until I play longer if I were you. You may not play much longer, you may play until SE puts FFXI to rest. But you can't tell now, so make sure you plan on using it.

As far as the /si thing, I bet it was at the bottom of the list. When you hit tab it always puts what you've already typed at the bottom.
The japanese version / commands are the same as na, so if jp don't have a /hai, why would eu have a /si? ;p

It's affected, trust me. First time I tried it as 40THF/19BST) on the Bats that are in the tunnel between Qufim and Jeuno. I kept getting mischarms. When I finally had the damn things though, it took them significantly longer to uncharm then EMs do on my BST.

Thieves also have the worst charisma shared with dark knights and ninja. ;p
I charmed kraken (ep) no problem with a level 1 bst sub. But I was a dragoon! For some reason dragoons have fairly high charisma.
Lunay
May 17th, 2005, 11:25 PM
I have tested the above situation. I have tried RDM54/BST27 and I equipped my RDM with CHR items such as Monster Signa, Hope Rings, and others. And I noticed my CHR was still low compared to BST as a main. I went into Sauromugue Champagne and tried to charm a bat. It worked easy. But the length of mob staying charmed is NOT affected by CHR. So the bat was uncharmed fairly quickly. So while you might be able to charm a mob equally compared to BST as a main, the duration of the charm is a different story.

My NIN = BST, so I can just head out to K. Tunnel to get an immediate comparison. Hell, I can check it on any job, but I won't get accurate Charm% rates on anything else.

If you were 54...11,000+12,800+5000(9k remaining)=28800 ~3.2k/hr. Wouldn't necessarily say "gorgeous," but it's not bad either for pickups.

2k/hour, partying, is bad no matter who you are. It's one thing for DRG or THF to get that soloing, but if you're partying for that much, you need to stop and examine what your party is doing wrong.

Yes, you have to do a quest for each corresponding job. With DRG ou have to start the quest in Sando once you hit 30, and go to Maze Of Shakrami with an pickaxe and dig yourself a DRG egg, and go back to Sando I believe, and you will have to fight a huge Dragon - which I easily crushed with my 71 Ranger, than you get to pick a name for your DRG pet. I forgot where the SMN's quest is started but you will need a Carbuncle's Ruby, an ex item which will drop from Leechs in Qufim (not recommended, the drop is slim here), Maze Of Shakarami (drops alot here with my 70 Thief while camping Argus/Leech King), or you can go kill the leechs at one of the two beachs. And you must expose the Ruby to 7 weather conditions. And bring it to the Carbuncle circle. Ninja flag quest is started in Port Bastok. You must kill 3 NM leechs simultaneously - another easy kill. With the key item in your hand go back to Bastok and he will ask you to deliver the key item to Norg. And that's it.

Alright, this'll be a dangerous trip alone.. so do it that way =D Running to Jeuno is a rite of passage, after all.
Now, there are 3 routes you can pick. Most people go the way of their home nation, though in all fairness, Bastok's is easier, since there are no high-speed monsters on the way there.
Bastok: Konschtat Highlands, NE exit -> Pashow Marshlands, follow the path, Rolanberry Fields, follow the path, but be EXTREMELY careful.
Quadav are sound aggroing, so stay completely away from them. Goobbue are as well, but they don't spawn too close to the roads in Rolanberry, where they'll probably OHKO you.
San d'Oria: La Theine Plateau, East exit -> Jugner Forest, follow the path, stay far away from Tigers, as they're faster then you and sight aggro from farther then most mobs -> Battallia Downs, SE exit, again with the Tigers
Windurst: Tahrongi Canyon, North Exit -> Meriphataud Mountains, NW exit, follow the roads, as I don't think anything aggros in this zone near the roads -> Sauromugue Champaign, NW exit, Raptors and Coeurls are both faster then you, and will kill you if you're aggro'd. Raptors are sound, so just stay far away, Coeurls are sight, so keep away from the front.
Good luck, and set your home point in Jeuno right after you get there. In Qufim, be very careful moving at night. Undead will aggro you if your HP is below 75%, or rather, is yellow, so you'll die if you try moving at night under those conditions. Gigas on Qufim are sight aggro, but they're very slow so you can zone them without putting people in too much danger. Also, maybe it's just me, but I find exping on Gigas to be very entertaining.

^ I just wanted to add to RPGuru's awesome guide. Always watch out for the 'Weapon' (it's a type of mob if you haven't seen one.) They will sometimes be luring around on the way to the outside part of Qufim.
And since you are a lvl 20 now, I suggest that you go get your chocobo license. Go buy 4 gausebit grass and head to the chocobo stable in Upper Jeuno. And after you get your license, I would go work on having some sort of a sub. I know you don't have any advance job yet so, I suggest using MNK or WAR. Go raise monk or war to lvl 15 (that way you can sub it until LVL 30) and go back to your Thief again. That way people will know that you are serious, since you have a sub, etc. Just a tip so it's not really necessary. Have fun. :)

I know that you don't have any 'advanced job' unlocked. Advanced job meaning PAL, NIN, DRG, SAM, BST, SMN, DRK, etc. That's why I suggested that you level your War or Monk. But I recommend leveling War because you will level Ninja and War as a sub will be required. Rather then trying to hit 30 with an under-leveled sub, I'm just suggesting that you go level War to level 15, that way you can use the War as a sub for Thief to get to level 30. And when you unlock Ninja, the War sub is already leveled to 15 so you can focus on leveling Ninja to 30. Or you can try to aim for 30 with your Thief without a 'properly leveled' sub job. Either way, you will be forced to level your War in the future.
I have never heard the term OHKO before.

OHKO means One Hit Knock Out.
NIN and WAR are probably the best exp subs for Thief. NIN's actually not that good until level 50, but it is the standard sub. WAR will lead for overall damage, from 1-75, but /NIN gives you more leeway on your pulls (Anyone who wants to put up a bravado show and say they never have to worry about it can stop; There will always be times, particularly on long pulls, where something will get in your way and you'll have to stop and go around/wait for it to get out of your way), prevents some damaging AoE (Gigas, Bunnies, Orcs, and Weapons being the notable exp mob types that statement applies to), and returns better TP. TP's actually a pretty moot point until you start using Dancing Edge.
Outside of Exp, /NIN is superior for almost anything you need done, except for hunting select NMs. You can (If necessary) tank an add (It's usually not), or solo Even Matches, with /NIN. Additionally, one trick you'll learn to use while pulling is disengaging and bringing the next mob early. This is really only doable in good parties, but it really helps chains, and only THF can do it, since our DoT is nothing to write home about. /WAR, however, is better damage, 30-75. That all said, I wouldn't expect someone to level WAR to 16, when their highest level is 29-30, for the sole purpose of subbing for 3 levels (33 is when it's easy to justify NIN sub; Garlaige is the first serious pulling zone, coupled with getting Viper Bite).
To get to Qufim, just keep going down the stairs. The exit at the bottom leads to Qufim Island.

I would just like to add that nin is a tank class job and pretty much nothing else.. after 12, and you have utsusemi: ichi, you'll be tanking. not so much in dunes from what I understand, but later... oh, tanking is what a nin does best, and a good one is just beauty in motion....
^ Fell in love with nin's over the last 5 lvl's... don't get me wrong, still love Pld's more myself.. more hate control.. but couple a NIN with a THF and a SATA buddy...
Edit: BTW, all you others (Guru, Michael, Aelice, etc.) if you see me say something wrong... slap me and set me straight lol
Edit2 (because I'm a 'tard): Hit 59 today, wearing my hauby, and am itching to get 60.... {Guillotine}? {Yes, please} ^_^ ((only 3.9ktnl... ooh, and once I hit 60 I get to go lvl sam to 37 to sub...yum))

Hehehe.. you're going to want THF up, actually. SA Spinning Slash + Level 3 Light = Dead. Spinning Slash is highly innaccurate, so it needs SA. Spamming WS doesn't really work in most parties. SAM shouldn't need to be past 33.
I actually don't approve of THF sub on DRK pre-66. No truly useful 1-hit WS, and it's not worth giving up 'Zerk and 2A for. But Spinning Slash changes that 'un.
Gawd, I need to log back into FFXI. Curse you, Sony, fix my PS2 faster!
Edit: For reference, NIN can theoretically do DD; Shuriken and :Ni ninjutsu. The first is honestly only mentioned for ***** and giggles. Spamming Shuriken would cost so much money that it's completely impractical. :Ni Ninjutsu doesn't work until 40+, and involves subbing RDM or BLM (BLM ONRY post 60) and just spamming the elemental wheel. That's expensive and inventory intensive, but not like Shuriken Spam. Tanking is cheapest, and a lot harder/more fun then mashing a few macros for the rest of eternity.

Ok thanks...btw I really don't have much more gil (something like 200-300 gil)...all the other stuff I selled is in Bastok's AH and I have nothing to sell in Jeuno and I need Qufim's map (3000 gil)... so what should I do?
Ok, now I am REALLY getting annoying, but what does DoT stand for? -_-;
RPGuru1331
May 22nd, 2005, 11:12 AM
DoT = Damage over Time. It's what describes a class that uses lots of quick, decent hits for damage. Thieves are burst damage; A lot of our damage is focused on SATA. Not as much as people want to believe, but enough.
As to money, you'll probably have to farm now, which is bad because it means that you'll need to go back to a newbie zone. Farming is usually killing lots of peons and selling the drops. There are a few easy ways to do this; For you, I suggest heading to San d'Oria, and levelling your sub; Do it on Orcs, orcs, and more orcs, for as long as you can, with Signet on. Sell the fire crystals. I know a friend who had 50k by the time he got his sub, just from selling crystals. That should fund you until you hit 30, at which point I know for a fact you can farm well by then. I suggest heading to Bastok, either North or South Gustaberg, and heading to the hills there (preferably North). Kill Bees, Bats, Goblins, the Black Wolf (If it spawns on you), and Stinging Sophie (In North only). I made 10k an hour back then, when Fire Crystals were only 1k, so you'll probably pull in decent amounts.
Oh, and that's the only farming advice I ever give, so you'll have to find your own after that =D

Stinging Sophie is a NM that spawns in North Gustaberg and it drops the Beestinger (an excellent THF only dagger that will give you dex and agi - not only that it has a low delay.) I think you made a good choice of going with THF since you have Treasure Hunter now. Before you ask I will tell you that Treasurer Hunter will increase your drop rate. So have fun farming. You can also try farming Silk Thread, but I have no idea what the price for a stack is nowdays since I haven't logged on for a while now.

I warned you... When you level anything past LVL 20, you are expected to be in shape - proper sub, no under-leveled sub, decent equipment, etc. It's sad to say but people will look down on you for that. That's why I highly suggested that you go level War or Monk to lvl 15. That way, you can concentrate on hitting LVL 30 with some sort of a sub. I recommended WAR because, once you hit LVL 30 with your THF and unlock NINJA, you will level NINJA and you will have your WAR sub ready. I was just thinking ahead. And you can't focus on trying to get to a high level as soon as possible. You have to farm, raise skill, raise craft (it will come in handy later trust me), etc. If you have the right equipment and right sub, people will want to invite you. Oh, and don't forget to get your chocobo license, get all the gate crystals, and raise your rank. Everything you do will be judged.
As for Stinging Sophie, I think he spawns on the little mountain in North Gustaberg.
RPGuru1331
May 22nd, 2005, 11:10 PM
Beestinger isn't THF onry. It's how I tested Subtle Blow with BST. I wanted to know how much Hornet Needle was giving. It's not a bad dagger, but Small Sword is better +Stat (Considerring you don't have Trick Attack), better DPS, and a fun little quest series for a newbie (Hint: Guess what was my first one =D). Sophie spawns on Zegham Hill (It's labelled on your map) in North Gustaberg.
Lunay, uh, heh, you're being a bit harsh. He really should get his chocobo license ASAP, but uh, only so much can be expected of a level 20 o.o; I mean, there's only so much they can do.

Oh, I agree that he should hit 15/16 on either WAR or MNK, and I should have said so. Subs are very important, and you should have them maxxed out very, very quickly after you get them. WAR makes sense given that he'll be subbing NIN, but it's just so hard to tell a pre-30 THF to sub anything but MNK; It honestly is king for that level range.
If I'm harsh, most people in-game will seem like satan, though. Since they will speak up and critisize you for every little thing. Might as well break him in.
I wish I could confirm, and while I'm a nazi to non-newbies in game, I've seen people slip by with REDICULOUSLY bad equipment; My favorite was the Samurai who didn't farm because it wasn't challenging; His only halfway decent item was his Katana, and the rest was utter, and complete, garbage. People like that make me cry, but I digress.

Unfortunately, I fell a sleep during one of these exp up moments, and when I woke up about 15 minutes later, I saw my character lying dead in Crawler's Nest. This game is addicting... you are next bachaka! You will play 36 ~48 hours straight at some point. :) PS If you decide to come to Alexander, I can help you out a bit. And yes, I'll give you some money for free since I have like 10+ million G with my account. I like Alexander, even if I'm not playing this game much as I used to. It's not as hard to hit 75 as you might think it is.
... especially not with the new level caps. It takes half the time now. :\
Hell, a brd can go from 60 to 75 in about 2 weeks. I saw it happen, and I don't doubt for a second that anyone else can. Now; BRD is a highly-wanted job, so it makes sense. This was about a year ago, on the old EXP cap.

Hitting LVL 75 in all of your jobs is very impressive. I don't know much about the new cap since I am not fully dedicated to FFXI anymore. But I knew people that had 6 LVL 75 jobs or more before this new cap took effect. While it's not impossible to do, it's alot of dedication. PS What lvl is your SMN now? Long time no see btw. The new cap's overall effect is that level 75 now is what used to be level 73. What it did that I actually consider useful is that it put the tnls on an actual curve, not that X Cubed nonsense it used to be on.
Midpoint is 67-isk now, I think.
JOJO
May 26th, 2005, 07:21 AM
I thought mid-point is now at about 60 instead of 63. Overall, I think it's about 180k experience less to max out...kinda like reaching level 71 before the update. There was a nice curve showing the differences and now it's a more linear progression 55+ which really affects a lot of people's mentally. For instance when you hit 55, you used to go from 14k tnl up to 20k tnl until you hit 60. Combined with AF hunts and Genkai, it seemed so repetative for a lot of people. When you hit 60 (and probably have your AF), you suddenly see 30k tnl, which takes out a lot of motivation to continue leveling that job consistently. Now, I don't think you see 30k tnl until around level 68 or something. I hit 75 shortly after this update so it didn't help me, but at least it'll help my RNG (my 2nd main) once I get there.
For now, I'm working on my 4th and final sub for my RDM, which is NIN. Only then will I start leveling RNG again. My brother is finally almost to the point where we can actually party again as his BLM is now 71. Oh yeah, I finally got to you Chainspell+Stun for the first time last week on none other than Suzaku. It was a little messy and I was nervous, but it was enough to keep us alive.

Just the other day a 65 WHM and myself ( 65 SAM) took down the Sea Horror on the Selbina-Mhuara boat by ourselves. It was by no means a clear cut victory and I nearly died every 3 seconds once it used Hundred Fists, but we did take it down by ourselves and neither of us died. It's something both of us have wanted to do for a long while now. I surprised even myself with the damage I did when I used Meikyo Shisui on it. And as a side note, the WHM did not even use Benediction.
Then we went to do it again the next day. First of all I forgot my Kabobs this time. I decided to wanted to try a massive skill chain rather than just use Tachi: Yukikaze and Tachi: Gekko over and over. That was a mistake. The damage from Tachi: Koki and Tachi: Jinpu, even with the Skillchain, was nothing compared to Tachi: Yukikaze and Tachi: Gekko's stand alone damage. Plus, this time around I used Haubergeon rather than my AF body because I thought I could kill it faster with the added attack and STR. That was apparently another mistake. We did not do nearly as well, and by the time I got it down to 2/3 life and it used Hundred Fists, the WHM could barely keep up with the damage I was taking, I thought for sure I was dead, when Hundred Fists wore off the WHM had no MP left and the Sea Horror was at 1/8 life. I had 300 HP and was getting hit for about 60-80 each time. When my HP as at 70 in the red, I saw my life bar shoot up to almost full suddenly. The PLD and WHM that were camping it on the other side of the boat healed me. I thought they wouldn't since we got the claim on the Sea Horror before them, but they healed me anyway. So I took the Sea Horror down shortly after that and thanked them.
The WHM and I will be returning to that boat for Round 3, since for all intents and purposes the Sea Horror won Round 2, or it would have, if not for the help of others that were there with us. This time I won't forget my kabobs, I won't mess around with crappy weapon skills, and I won't wear the Haubergeon with that nasty -20 Evasion -5 AGI. I already get -10 Evasion from my earrings.

Haha, summoning magic is lame to raise anyway, and just going outside of Jeuno you see plenty of people who either hate themselves, or are summon botting.
I personally don't care about something like that, simply because it's not really affecting anyone else. Well, except maybe the poor little PS2 players.
It's like the original EverQuest. Taunt/Provoke in EverQuest was something like 2 second refresh timer. It was like a monk's boost in terms of hate. So basically, for 50 (then 60, then 65, then 70!) levels any tanks of the game were expected to be hitting taunt every 2 seconds. Enter macro program that would repeat key presses. I'm not against doing something to get around horrible design flaws. For some reason I doubt even a full time avatar battle/pact summoner could keep their skill consistantly capped.
Of course I'll admit I used the EQ macro program to repeat my monk's flying kicks (mm, 10-20 second reuse maybe?). Monks couldn't taunt though. :( I'm also guilty of setting multiple macros up so that it'd repeat an /assist (maintanksnamehere) and my flying kick macros so I could go make a sandwich without slowing down the group (and not telling them), haha.

I mentioned it in my LS the other day that I was using one, they all did lol and that was all.
I mentioned it again yesterday, and 3 people got very upset over it. I told them to get over it. They said they'd train on me, and then I said "You must be some kinda great hacker to spawn an enemy in the Cloister of Tremors!"
I thought it was kinda funny when they said they'd MPK me. I'm now adding it to my bazaar comment. I summon bot, and go /away. SE won't do anything and you all know it... so just stop. lol
I start the bot, and then go out for a while. Come back and it's raised 5-10 levels! woohoo!

I remember I used to make the campers mad by camping Stroper and I would walk away with at least one ring everytime, or two at times, heck I even got 3 one time but that took me the whole day (about 14 hours play time) Anyway, those GIL sellers would work together with 6 people.. they pretty much dominated the room near the exit, but when it came to the stairs, I dominated. And I have never used any kind of bot by the way. I beat a few bots for Argus too. I'm 1/3 against Argus, and 2/7 for Leech King. With a lot of other HNM, NM's on my list. I loved hunting NM's, not because of the drop, but because of the competition and the satisfaction of saying "I beat you, you are too slow." LOL
RPGuru1331

Stroper's Gilsellers on Levi suck. I know a Monk who could beat them just using Chi Blast, no bots, and almost 80% of the time. Argus is way too risky for me to try on. The fight would be fun as hell, but getting the claim over bots/getting the drop would be... rediculous. Not to mention the spawn rate.
It's pretty brazen of you to put it in your bazaar comment; If you come back in Mordion Gaol, don't be surprised. Like I said, I don't think a SMN bot is harmful, because it's not. Every other Bot negatively affects others.

1) @800 is hell in Valkurm.
2) I hate the Dunes also.
3) Chocobos are overrated. Seen the prices at the Crag in Tahrongi? Yeah.
4) Bots are everywhere, normal players just can't tell. When someone ignores them they assume the person is a bot. We call these people who jump to conclusions dumbasses. I turn my filters on and go /away when I fish. I don't bot b/c with the new mini-game, it's fun. :)
5) ToS = Terms of Service. Whiners and children; when they can't convince you that your botting is a bad thing; and secondary to when their flames don't work, they use the ToS and quote it page for page. When you still say "so", they threaten to call a GM.
The ToS is just the poor-mans way out of a long debate on ethics, and right and wrong.
Notice that the people who bring up the ToS and call GM's are the poor people who can't afford to buy gil. ;)
...that, or they take the game too seriously. The drama that unfolds in Jeuno when Gilsellers want a simple Teleport... oh it feels like General Hospital meets One Life to Live. -.-

Now that is cavalier and wrong. The ToS is not a "poor man's way out of an ethical argument". Before we even discuss the ramifications of bottingl you are, and I will bold this, Breaking a contract you have signed if you do so. Period. This is wrong, no matter how much you can get away with it, and no matter how little people will care. No, most people are not running bots, no, most people don't buy gil.

I suggest you research a little game we call Asheron's Call 2. That game was flat out ruined by RMT. Anyone saying it's right, or isn't wrong, at least, doesn't know their history.
Do I condone gilseller/buyer witch hunts? No. Do I think you should go around screaming about everyone who's packet-sniffing on the Land Kings? No. But that doesn't make it right.
Oh, and since the most common retort is "Oh yeah!? Well.. uh.. windowers and parsers are illegal! So hah!" the ToS specifies cheat devices now, thus validifying that sort of thing.

Right or wrong, SE hardly does anything about it. Tell me how something not enforced can even be argued? It can't. Whether it is in the ToS or not is irrelevant unless SE does a crackdown and actually enforces them. Until they enforce the ToS, then it doesn't exist. Period. :)
And when I say enforced, I mean enforced by SE. Not by little boyscouts whose best method to drill an idea into your head is to spam:

Wrong; It is still there, regardless of it's enforcement. Like I said, even before we bring in the ramifications of what you do, you're still breaking a contract you've signed, and of your own free will; Like I said, Summon Bots are one thing, but when you get to gilbuying, you're treading on *MY* toes.

No, actually, I wouldn't do that, but either way.

ugh, sometimes I wonder about people in this game. I am at lvl 54 and was partying in the Tree, fighting Robber crabs (should be the same lvl as in Kufkal Tunnel that I have been fighting, and exping successfully for the previous few lvls), but this party couldn't seem to get it done right. Party was Pld (me), Thf, Sam, Blm and 2X RDM. One RDM was main healer, and the other, well I don't know exactly what he was doing, but he certainly wasn't helping with the healing. The Blm, Sam, and Thf, never could get the timing down for the SC+Freeze MB, and I was pulling complete hate to the point we called for help on one crab, and everyone that helped (including a 72+ Nin couldn't pull the crab off of me) So after the fight where we called for help because 2 people DC in middle of fight, the one RDM can't keep up with heals, and I die, he tries to convert, dies, other RDM warps out, thf dies, and BLM escapes with SAM. Party disbands, and I am left to fend for myself in a nowhere land with no map.

^ LOL! I truly hate Boyada. It is always smart to bring a warp scroll, especially when you are stranded and don't have sneak oil or spell.
I hate Red Mage who doesn't not like to support heal. Instead, they go into offense mode and use spells just once in a while. You think that people would know better by the time you reach LVL 55, but some people never learn.
And ancient burst is too easy to do. Just make sure that the Black Mage has a good macro so that the melees can synchronize. You really had a good setup for to level up on the robber crabs, so there sholdn't have been any problems at all. I would have chosen a Ranger over a Samurai, but it should have worked nicely as long as everyone played there role.

Ordinarily, I'd add in the possibility that you're in some form of high-paying job, but then, you haven't really proven you have the mental capacity for them.

Let's say i'm more than comfortable with what I do.
And if you base how a person acts or their mental capability over how they seem over the internet, then just GTFO the internet. That's called "Taking it too seriously". Step outside sometimes and just stop caring about others and when your spirits are higher, you'll see things like I do. If you don't do it, someone else will. Better to beat the person to it and then laugh at them for being too slow at it, than to be the one being laughed at.
Sure having kids would be nice, but I have no intention of going into a committed relationship with a woman unless she's as cutthroat as me. I have no need for someone that just begs for love and whines when the world doesn't spin for her; but rather someone that does something for herself and doesn't rely on favors on others like a hobo, but rather uses them like a drug.
This is probably why i'll never marry. All the women I meet only want to talk about how "That guy over there had an attitude with me. Like, all I did was ask if he needed assistance!". mmmhm, sometimes I wanna just *****-slap every one of them, but then I realize: Jail for these idiots isn't worth it.
But yeah, if buying gil gets me higher and farther than most others, so be it. I want only the best. And it's my game, so I will do as I please. :)

I know someone who has probably bought 30 million gil+ so they could have items such as E-Bow and striders... (items that no rangers must have...) What sucks is how there are always ******* gilsellers at every single NM camp spot anymore. They will attempt to mpk you and if they cant do that they will try to lag you out by bring tons of low level mobs around you. Then they always try to steal the mob itself from you. I cant think of a single NM that is worth camping that is NEVER not being camped by a gilseller. So in the end, I just don't like people giving these *******s their paycheck pretty much... Gilsellers do make game less fun for many people.

You think I base this on how you act? You only further prove it then. I base it on the arguments you've made in various threads, which can almost universally be called weak. It's the only fair basis I've ever seen, and it's the one I take.

Don't take it personally. I don't think it's particularly wrong, but living costs are lower when you're alone, so you'll have more disposable income.
But yeah, if buying gil gets me higher and farther than most others, so be it. I want only the best. And it's my game, so I will do as I please. :)
It ain't your game there, skippy. This ain't a single player game. I don't really care who or what cheats in those, because, get this, you're not interfering with my game when you do so. My copy of Star Ocean 3 isn't going to turn around and start sending 4th Dimension enemies at me because you cheated, or delete my Fol count and laugh. However, you cheating in an MMO actually causes problems for people on your server; Go camp Mee Deggi the Punisher, or Stroper Chyme, or farm Tree Cuttings in Zi'Tah if you'd like to see how they affect people's gameplay. I've had one of their paladins train almost the zone's worth of undead... it didn't work, since I Fleed out of aggro range the second he died, but he tried it.. Additionally, it doesn't get you higher and further then people who work. It gets you what they get, but faster. Yes, with equal playtime, you'll be farther, but you'll be out in the wallet. And no, I'm not some poor kid on a 56k. I *COULD* buy gil, but in the end, I didn't earn this money to blow it on **** I can get myself.
You say it's your game also? Do you want a medal for pointing this out? Or maybe a new scout badge? I know it's your game also. Do I care that I affect you negatively? Nope, not at all. Live with it, or find a new game to play.
Good. I suppose I won't care if and when a THF 45 you've never met before gets you killed repeatedly. Oh, wait, I'm not that petty, nor do I have that much free time. After all, I'm too busy on FFXI for that; I'm actually earning my ****. I told you already, gilsellers realistically only help me. But I, unlike you, recognize and understand that there are shmoes out there who you know, *AREN'T* helped, and I'm not so much of an asshat as to discount 6000+ people just 'cause they're not me or my friends.

I was camping Serket with a LS of mine, and we saw as gilsellers converged in the zone within minutes before he spawned. They got to the exact spot, and just huddled around it. Another LS beat them to it, but that wasn't the end of it. They trained everything you can think of on them, and eventually got the claim from making them cure themselves and sleep things, and by spamming Cures themselves. Another time they simply paraded Serket around the area letting him kill each and every single exp party in the area. For Roc, they simply steal him from you with cures.
What do you expect people to do? Fight for a claim that you will end up losing either to being MPK'd or having it stolen from you by them spamming spells on you? What is the point in wasting several hours camping these things with a LS, to maybe, MAYBE get luck so when they attempt to MPK you, they die before they get close to you. What is the point in bringing out a couple parties and waiting so long, only to have the claim lost?
Nobody on the Bismarck server is "nice" anymore. Everyone is greedy. One person; the entire 3 hours we where camping it, kept asking why our 75 NIN was garaunteed the Claw, and he(60 mnk) was not. He was questioning the rules we had in place before he joined the LS, and was saying "Well, I think it should be sold and we all benefit for camping it." Our NIN has that vishnu thing; that worthless +3 evasion. If he had Scorpion Harness, it would just mean we could get alot more things for our LS. But his greed for gil quicked got everyone in the LS upset when we lost the claim to gil sellers.
The price on the claw hasn't changed much from its 6mil recently, nor do I think it shall. From being attainable from a KSNM, and various other methods now, the price shouldn't be so high, and you know it.
So tell me... what's a person to do while SE just allows them to do as they please, when they KNOW they are selling gil; which as the boy scouts like to point out, "Is against the ToS"? Try to farm? Haha, you'd be surprised what a WHM can farm. Nothing worth value. Craft? The new tax stystem is a ***** for any synth you make now. You either bazaar the item and hope someone checks you, or you find a way to pay the insane tax. KSNM/BCNM? You'd be surprised how many idiots are allowed into bcnm40 these days. I've given up hope on that one. I have yet to try a KSNM b/c of the nightmares i've had from bcnm40 on my brd, but I do want a Gleemans Belt for free... <.<
Tell me how to advance myself in a quick manner gil wise, when all of the things that used to be good, are now less-than-spectacular thanks to Gil Sellers, and SE's nerfs. I'm open to suggestions. :)

Hah. If you're letting them steal it via cure, you deserve it. Gravity/Bind go a long way to stopping that.

Seriously, if gilsellers are MPKing you outside of someplace like Kuftal, you deserve it. Garlaige's highest level mobs are roughly level 60. There are enough different melee that can tank/take EP/DC that if it's happening to you, it's your fault.

It's the same 6 mil, but everything else went up in price... cry me a river. You should have seen the old prices on Levi. 8 Mil for the Harness, 6 for the claw. Not sure on the Claw's price now, but the harness is 5 Mil.
So tell me... what's a person to do while SE just allows them to do as they please, when they KNOW they are selling gil; which as the boy scouts like to point out, "Is against the ToS"? Try to farm? Wait, you're going to have clarify what you mean by the new craft system.. if you mean the way new JSE's base components are obtained, then yes, I agree. If you mean that the taxes are actually bad, I laugh at you, long loud and repeatedly. It affects the farmers/HELMERs/Gardenners more then the crafters, dimwit, and that ground floor is where gilfarmers are. You're too low for a KSNM (Unless you're at ~70) so don't worry about it. And if you think I mean Steamed Sprouts.. well, you get what you deserve for following the idiots' BCNM. Micheal has mentioned, many many times, a good one on this board. It's called Undying Promise. Look into it yourself. There are a LOT of BCNMs, and for pure profit, you can oftentimes get equal profit from other BCNMs. The only real exception to this is the KSNM 30 whose name escapes me with the Platoon Scorps.
Tell me how to advance myself in a quick manner gil wise, when all of the things that used to be good, are now less-than-spectacular thanks to Gil Sellers, and SE's nerfs. I'm open to suggestions. :)
When did I say it'd be fast? I'm going to try and drill this into you: Being uber in an MMO is not supposed to be instantaneous. They're the biggest time sink genre in existence. If you want fast (Note, I didn't say Easy like most FFXI players) advancement, play WoW. SE's nerfs haven't really hurt legit players.
Oh, and people like you are the whole reason gilsellers are targetting HNMs now =D
If they never got the required support to make it profitable, they would have upped prices.. thus driving people away faster. They wouldn't have gotten up the ladder. So really.. go cry me a river about how gilsellers are hitting your friends. You're really only helping them, as is anyone trying to buy gil.

Eh, I imagine if we were both on the same server, we'd be on each others' blacklists and that'd be the end of that on that front. I've withstood greater temptations to use Hide for MPK, this is nothing, relatively. The argument essentially started since he took an arrogant, invincible attitude about gilbuying in another thread, to which I responded. There;s just no point in continuing this conversation any longer Guru. You're wrong on many levels. Serket MPKing is VERY easy to do, you obviously are nowhere near levels to camp him so you have no idea. But hey, w/e. You're right b/c you don't support gil selling! Everyone is right who doesn't support gil selling! omg why didn't I see it sooner?! /bow /kneel Guru lol
Seriously, level past 50 and tell me how "if you die being MPK'd on Serket, you deserve it." lol... so ignorant... kekeke
Maybe it's that being a Thief has me in the mentality that everything that isn't drawing me in is easy to kite, I'm not sure. Highest levels down there are Thunder Elementals (I've seen maybe one, after all my time there, so I'm not worried), the Doomed, and the Magic Pots. Kiting a BLM (or 5) is tricky under normal circumstances, but if you know the citadel well enough, it's not difficult. You just have to get out of the basement. 'course, I'm not expecting playing smart from you. Seriously, anything that can -ga can kite a train in Garlaige.. If they know the layout. Hint: if sight is blocked, spells are. I used this quite extensively pulling in KRT.
And Guru, even if you where on my server, there's no way in hell a level 45 thf can train anything i'm leveling off of ATM on my parties. You would die within seconds. But hey, get a server migration and you can try I guess... haha I would love, LOVE to see you train a Raptor.
Oh darn, a high speed mob. Help me save me.
*Hits Flee, when that wears and they catch up, Perfect Dodge*
Wait, what the hell was I saying?
I was *ALMOST* hoping you'd say you were levelling in someplace weird. But not expecting it. Oh, and don't forget Bibiki Bay in 3-4 levels, long as we're going by standard exp spots. Goblin city. Oh, and Jackie, one more thing! Perytons are behind the Raptors, while we're on the subject... Hell, I don't even need level 45 if I'm not planning on getting out alive.
Shoddy defense? I'm not going to explain what I do on a level only rocket scientist majors can understand. It's a very simple thing, therefore I use only the simplest ways to "Argue".
This isn't about big words.. this is about simply tying up holes in your arguments. Which you don't really do. I've seen people present much better points in favor of gilselling.
But hey, you know what they sya about people who argue over the internet.
I do. Personally, I consider that phrase the creation of someone who couldn't debate to save their soul, but you go with what works, and if you fall into this category, I don't blame you for taking it.
I'm curious, do you think you're arguing with a starry-eyed nublet who hasn't been out of the jungles yet? Because you're dead wrong if you do. That I know for a fact you shouldn't be tangoing with HNMs (Unless, heh, you get an alliance up after War-Axe Beak, or the Jeuno HNMs, since God knows you won't claim KA; Party after the Rams should be alright though) ought to tell you something. I have played this game longer then you, and while I can't argue too many points on SMN with you... Well, let's just say I can talk about general game knowledge with some measure of authority.

You're not really ahead. Your stance on this whole issue is "I'm too lazy to do it myself, and because I got MPKed by gilsellers at ONE HNM, I'm going to encourage them by buying their gil." Your argument is nothing more than "other people do it, why shouldn't I?"
Want to know why the rest of us are against it and don't do it? It's not hard cash that's the problem.
It's the knowledge that this is more than a single player game. You are not the only player on the server, yet you speak of greedy people. You are the epitome of greed as a gilbuyer. You do nothing more than fuel more chinese asshats that can't play for crap that steal all the camps, mpk the legit players that get claims-- and all just because you're too ****ing lazy to do it yourself. There's nothing respectable about that.
This game is more than your time, it's the time of thousands of others around the world. You need to acknowledge this and accept it, instead of being a close-minded, selfish, greedy asshat about it. You sit there and FLAUNT that you're all of these things, and then try to defend it as if you're doing nothing wrong. That's why you're in an argument over the internet. The easiest way out here, and the only respectable way out would be to admit you know you're a *******, that you're in the wrong. Doesn't matter if you keep doing it, but you do nothing more than dig yourself a deeper hole trying to justify it.
I farmed about 1 million gil in 24 hours of /playtime without HNMs, without NMs, without crafting. There are literally tons of things I could camp, but I dislike competition, so I take the easy ways out. A 66 ninja running around in places like Old Town Movalpolos and Giddeus making 40k/hr BEFORE they added highly sought after things like red moko (why everyone wants it is beyond me, that entire set is just stupid, but what can I complain, it funds my characters). Red Moko alone now brings me ~40k/hr, on top of the (now)25-30k/hr I make from harvesting. Red Moko did bring out more harvesters, so the prices dropped, but not too badly to hurt an overall profit.
But I guess you haven't even considered anything like that, because "ohnoes I'm a mage that can't farm, I better buy my gilz, and lie about it!."
I haven't even gotten a chance to do Undying Promise since Utsusemi2 has hit 400k on my server. I did 9 runs back when it was new and Utsu2 was only 100k while Erase was 400k. Nine runs we made ~800k each, for maybe 2-3 hours worth of work. IT'S SO HARD TO MAKE GIL :(((((((((((((((

I meant by personal/2nd hand experience, but if you want research too, we're going to be at least evenly matched, likely to swing in my favor. I'll believe what's convenient, as will you, evidenced by the next quote:
Why? He's a worthless THF who has no idea what he's talking about.
I'm a nice guy, so I'll tell you exactly how to stop the MPKs. I'll give you a hint: You'll need more then just the Serket killer team. Not much more, maybe 3-4 people, tops, and if your kiters are wusses. I'm going to assume that your main team is high enough to dodge aggro from the Beetles, for reference, since that's the general guideline for level there. The gilsellers will start making their train by grabbing as much aggro as they can from the nearby mobs. I'll use a THF for the example, since I know how I'd do this. The Weapons, WAR Skellies, Doomed, and Ghosts will be meleeing the gilseller, the BLM skellies and Magic Pots will be at distance. They're the main problem. Have the THF build TP before the fact, and Cyclone the meleeing enemies as soon as the GSer dies. The mobs will, presuming your party hasn't healed the GSer for whatever reason, return to a neutral state for the next 5 seconds. Cyclone and run; You'll have every meleeing enemy on you. As a THF, I can guarantee you that a THF with good +Eva gear and capped Eva hits the ~80% Evasion cap on EM-Ts, so he'll be fine. Flee out, and up into the Citadel itself. There is at least one hole to the Basement that is relatively deep in, and doesn't require a Banishing Gate, but I don't recall the directions to it exactly. Learn them, and have your THF make his way to it. You'll need someone else, preferably who's subbing WHM, to pick the mages up. That person will follow the Thief. As long as they keep out of LoS (I.E. a wall intervening, not models) they will not be successfully casted on by the horde of BLMs. The only problem is a possible Bind, and that's why your other man is subbing WHM; Erase. When your horde catches up on you, drop down the hole. I'm a bit hazy on whether this resets hate in Garlaige(It seems random between zones, honestly). At this point, they'll wander down back to the basement, and you can start again. If hate isn't dropped, they'll follow you, and you continue this cycle of running until your main party has Serket dead. There are a few concerns, like keeping your kiters out of Serket's AoE range, and the possible death of a horde of 33-5s at the gate (An evil, but true way of interpreting the latter is that they're buying you time against their will). Personally, that wouldn't be a problem to me, simply because the real reason they're dying is the original MPK attempt, but meh.
If I can kite BLMs in a wide open area, you can find someone who can do it in a dungeon.

*YOU'RE* friends are the ones being MPKed. If you know so much, help them, don't use their MPK as an excuse to say the Gilsellers will always win. Especially when, you know, they don't.
Fun fact: Asked my LS aboot it, in this exact wording, while gilsellers mpked each other only at Serket (Claim was never lost by the legit LS).
Me: "So uh, outta curiosity, how easy would it be to MPK someone at Serket who's smart?"
LS Leader (3 jobs at 75 now, PC Release, actively reads KI, Alla, Mysterytour, and Somepage... he's going to know more then you, research be damned. You might nail him on one subject, like I have with Promyvion, but he'll slam you back on 5 more. Figuratively, since he's a good guy about it.): Yeah, it'd be pretty easy to MPK someone soloing it.
Others: Yeah, pretty much.
Me: Oh. How's that possible? I mean, the highest mobs are like, 65, right? No mixing weaknesses to Light or Dark make Horde Lullaby a pretty easy crowd control, doesn't it?
Me: Not to mention an independent kiter like a DRK/THF or THF/??? AoEing in and fleeing out.
LS Leader: Well, yeah, a non-noob LS shouldn't have a problem with it. But uh, you did ask about one person, I figure you're asking for yourself later.
Me: Oh, uh, right. Yeah, that's it.
You ***** about how they always win. I give you a strategy, the best you come up with is a poorly photoshopped retort. See why I say you put up shoddy defenses?
Oh, and Mike, got a solo challenge for ya; Go to the entrance of Pso'Xja that's just next to the entrance to Beaucedine Glacier, via Ranguemont Pass. Nothing will aggro you for as far as the first challenge, by the way =D. The second.. I'm relatively sure it's all TW to you. The highest mobs were DC to me until the elevator, which is outside the challenge.
Anyway, keep exploring until you find a ???, and be ready for a fight if/when you examine it. It's against two Dolls. Have fun, you should be able to decimate the first two if you have tools. I tanked one for the duration of the fight, while occasionally tanking the other, no problems, so you should be able to drop them both. The second pair is tougher; They AoE slow (Ignores shadows like a Bomb), Warcry (I.E. no def loss), and cast Silence. Bring Echo drops. That's all the help you get =D
You should be able to blow through the first one. The second pair is much tougher though, so solo it if you wish. I'm pretty sure you can, it'd just be a big challenge.
Re-Edit: This is a dungeon crawl, pure and simple. Getting to the second pair of statues is part of the fun.

Shoddy defense? I say what is needed, blunt and to the point. I don't care to explain anything, but rather just to place my opinion forth. Haven't figured that out yet? GTFO the internet. I you'd see any of my posts elsewhere I don't explain anything. I just say something, and then people go into a long essay trying to debate. I don't debate, when my opinion is out, I usually don't post again. So maybe you should stop already. It's one-sided now. :)

but aside from that, I got a plan worked out. when I start playing again I'm going to lvl thf to 37 for subbing and farming sake, after which I'll be selling a few of my DRK's equips and working on my PLD again... NEW JOBS TO BE UNVELIED WHEN THE XBOX 360 LAUNCHES!!
...and new spells, abilities, and possibly new summons.
I hope that interview wasn't fake... I could use a little change from the ease and grace of being a majestic BRD. I hope they upgrade BRD into a Dancer... or maybe upgrade other jobs to something at certain levels... that'd be nice. Maybe "Job Mastery" quests...
Well, I hope it's true. T.T
I can somehow see how it could possibly be true; CoP officially ended with the update yesterday. Or rather, the final elements have been unlocked for players to do. The odds of a new expainsion to launch with the 360 and boxes for the PC and PS2 are high. What better way to make the xbox newbies feel even more intimidated by the complexity of FFXI: Online, than by givine them RotZ, CoP and the new expansion to work on when it launches? ha. ha. ha.

When a new expansion pack is released, will there be a PS2 version of the expansion pack, or will it be only for the Xbox360 and PC now on? I know that FFXI will out live PS2, and go into the next gen era with Xbox360. I'm kinda worried that PS2 support will be disapear altogether.

New Jobs? Interesting. The only canon jobs they haven't tossed in are Blue Mage, Geomancer, and Chemist, given that RDM stole the Mystic Knight's only claim to fame, whereas WHM and RDM have the Time Mage's (I'm not even going to touch Demi as a spell).
Blue Mage would be fun, not sure if I'd take it up. Geomancer would definitely be an awesome diversion, and if Chemist were introduced, I'd start powerlevelling Alchemy from 35.X.

I don't think so, but that's just based on the Tuning In/Out quests, and those weren't anything SE couldn't god-mod past anyway. Only real problem I can see with that is that the other avatars are asleep and you call up a projection of them; Diablos is not, which seems like it'd stop players, but then..

Well, it turned into a 3 month hiatus but I'm back in FFXI. When I got on everyone was rallying for an AF/BCNM/avatar run and I got thrown into the mix. All it took was one shiva prime battle and I'm addicted again.
Luckily for me I didn't throw everything away when I left. The only thing I got rid of before leaving was a pair of leaping boots (which I kind of regret now seeing as they're going for a premium at the AH). I still have all my WHM gear and 800k between my main and mules so I think I'm set for a little while.
Now I have to play catch up. Most of the old-timers on my LS are now in their 70s with rank 10 and Zilart/Promathia missions done.

Better level up your Ranger or any other class that can equip a bow on the worms while you can. :P I wonder how different the DMG will be from long distance. Interesting update. I think the Ranger class will still be valuable in a PT, but when you pull, it's just less DMG.

I love being a Ranger. Yes, the ammo can get expensive, especially if you can't synth them yourself. Leveling woodworking is highly recommended. Alchemy & Smithing to make bullets. I wub using guns and crossbows. I've PTed with a poor Ranger before, and it was annoying because he wanted us to find a replacement soon after he had leveled. We asked him "why?," and he replied "because I can't afford anymore ammo." Being the kind person that I am, I gave him some GIL so that he can buy some. Moral of this story? It's probably smart to raise some other class (THF) high enough, so that you can farm. ^_^
BTW..Mithra....best race ever
They are cute. ^_^ But so are female tarus.
I have 4 characters. Purple haired Mithra, strawberry blonde female Taru, blond female Elvaan with her left bangs braided, and a gray haired male Taru with his haired tied to the back. I'm still waiting for Square-Enix to releae a TaruTaru plushie!

Blasphemy. Mithra can't even hold a candle to the greatness of Verant's original Iksar.

Good think i'm more fond of BLM members for +1 manaburns with no tank, and PLD tanks for regular -1 EXP parties. :D

I seriously doubt the patch will affect people who know what they're doing. I'm a ninja, and I'm not worried at all. I'm not going to jump on the "ohshit" bandwagon, because I know where the line is when it comes to ****** ninja tanks, and a real ninja tank. Hell, I'm a ninja tank that hates working with thieves, and I still have no problems holding hate in majority of party settings. If anything, this patch will weed out the bandwagon ninja players that simply suck at their job.
Of course, you're also missing a major point. Who are the most likely to pull hate from a ninja (or at least, a good ninja tank)? Rangers and Warriors. Hey, what's the most common ranger and warrior sub? Oh, that's right ninja. So again, we have a situation of simply weeding out terrible players. A good player can easily blink through 5 - 6 attacks (5 happens when there's a parry, evade, or miss while re-casting.) So guess what, that's 5-6 enmity cuts, making that person lose hate even faster so that the ninja can get it back.
I over compensate for enmity, I always have. I use all three of my debuffs every fight. I double burst every skillchain I get a chance to. I'll even pre-emptively debuff the mob to the element the mage is using for a fight I know they'll be sc'ing on. I carry all my tools, and I use them. Ninja is an expensive job, and I don't try to pretend otherwise.
If anything, I might have to buddy up with thieves more, and they'll love that, because thieves are almost worthless in xp post 60.
I will admit that ninja up until completing the GOOD ni spells will blow. But that's why I'm leveling my hume's ninja sub before the update hits.
As for rangers, how are they getting screwed? The only problem they have now is that they'll have to stand a little further back. Oh no?
Here's a new ranger:
without bard:
1) pull mob through the melee for the tank/secondary tank to voke
2) stay with the mages.
with bard:
1) pull mob TO the melee for the tank/secondary tank to voke
2) get attack/accuracy songs
3) fall back with the mages.
Rangers will simply become more mobile, and actually look more fitting to be a ranged fighter. The point blank stuff has always been retarded in my opinion anyway, and even moreso the fact that you have to be within melee engagement range to use ranged wses. Personally, I think they should be usable anywhere within ranged attack range.
By the way, rangers hardly miss at high levels. Look at standard ranger gear. They have so much +ranged accuracy available to them, on top of food, on top of their job passives. It's all going to come down to the ranger just standing further back to maintain his power, instead of being right on top of the mob.

I wonder about this game sometimes, I really do lol. At somepoint I'll finally get fed up and actually quit, but for now... I'll have fun skilling my Woodworking and trying to make some money. At some point, I may actually try RNG some more and see how I do- course, that means I'd almost have to lvl nin for sub, and I'm pretty sure I'd be in that group on bandwagon ppl that get's weeded out ^^;;
Michael
July 3rd, 2005, 09:18 PM
Well, maxing out a nin sub is before getting any ni (aside from tonko and utsusemi) spells, meaning you're kinda screwed either way. Nin can't easily DD for hate before getting the ni elemental wheel rolling, nor do they have the fast debuffs that stack some nice hate early in the fight. Again, that's why I'm leveling ninja sub now. Post update I'm sensing it'll be absolutely necessary to have 2 blink tanks.
Most ninja don't realise that a lot of holding stable hate is rolling the elemental wheel. Hence the bandwagon ninja that refuse to PT without thieves, complain about the costs, and can never really hold hate. D:

In terms of Ninja, I DEFINITELY agree. Ranger is different, but that's another point entirely =D
So guess what, that's 5-6 enmity cuts, making that person lose hate even faster so that the ninja can get it back.
That presupposes the enmity loss is major. I think what it'll do is lower your plateau of hate, so to speak. It'll make a Black Mage's life harder, and probably make them MUCH less apt to go into parties with Ninja though.
I'm thinking that once you start getting the +enmity gear, the updates effect will lessen vastly, if you even notice them after spamming Ninjutsu.
If anything, I might have to buddy up with thieves more, and they'll love that, because thieves are almost worthless in xp post 60.
You may go to Hell =D

Now we discussed this on AIM, but I still think it'd be interesting to see some other opinions here. No one here, unless they've spontaneously become Nostradamus' heir, knows precisely what the update will do. The two theories that I've seen the most are:
Long Range = +R. Atk, - R. Acc
and
Long Range = + R. Atk, +R. Acc, Short Range is negs to both.
If it's the former, either A: The per step changes will be REDICULOUS, to keep up with the.. what, +90 R. Acc they have at endgame? Or it'll be percent based, in which case it won't matter what level they are, 10 steps back is still -20% R. Acc or whatever. Bear in mind, these changes will likely take into account their current R. Acc. Personally, I want it to be the former, so that my soloing gets even easier. Atk doesn't affect Add: Effect damage, so Bloodies will steal deal relatively rediculous DoT.
As another note, if long range is better for them (A fair assumption no matter what), their lives will get a lot more interesting in exp then people want to admit. For instance, the KRT Bat/Hecteyes camp has NO room in it. If I needed to be far away to deal damage, I would be screwed, because I would be raped by aggroing mobs if I tried. Some camps will be affected, some won't.

These updates come at an interesting time for me. For one, I'm almost done with my NIN sub (35 now), so I might as well complete it before the update while I'm stuck with the Ichi spells. Once I have that done, I'm going to finally level RNG (level 17) as my 2nd main. So basically, I'd be learning RNG only with the new updates. Might be better for me in the long run as I won't really have to adjust to anything.
BTW, although real NIN tanking doesn't really begin until the Ni spells as Micheal mentioned, I have even more respect for them. They do require hitting macros even moreso than RDMs (at least how I play it)...I am constantly hitting my recast macro and placing my marker (PS2 user) on the next action whether it be Utsusemi, Provoke, WS, enfeeble, "Ready to start skillchain," etc. They also require just as much eye coordination as RDMs such as counting shadows (and those of other blink tanks), recast timers, TP warnings. I also hear that there are many approaches to playing NIN pre-Utsusemi Ni. Even as a Mithra, I tried focusing on +EVA gear. I was even told by a 75 NIN that it's not always best to concentrate on EVA since it's not as a reliable early on after I ate a Jack-o-lantern. Stuff like +VIT or +STR would be better for more hate control. Since I don't have an Emperor's Hairpin, I can't really boost my EVA as much as possible anyway, so would it be just better to concentrate on something else? It wouldn't really matter much since I only got 2 levels to go, but just wondering.
RPGuru1331
July 5th, 2005, 07:58 AM
The three basic setups are +Eva, +Att/STR, and +Haste%. What I do is I have a set of higher def/Vit gear and a set of Eva gear, and macro in most of the Def gear when my shadows drop. I only keep the Hairpin and Dodge Earrings in because there's no real replacement. 'Course.. you can also swap tank with another NIN or /NIN, so I would focus on +Eva in those situations.
Personally, I use a hybrid setup, but only because I can't just go +Eva on every slot yet. A few pieces of +Att are very nice, particularly the Bastokan/Republic subligar, and the Legionairre's Mittens (Macro in Def hands when my shadows drop.) Courage Rings and the +Vit ones are swapped out on the same basis. If/when I take it up further, I'll probably end up prioritizing a few verra nice +Haste% items as well (Fumas)

I like how you plan to have all these equip switch macros on a ninja. D:
I don't have time to be pressing other macros. Rarely a time when I get a break from hitting something, be it utsusemi, provoke, recast macro, debuffs, elemental wheel, timing a double burst, berserk, and sometimes tp report and ws. And that's all on top of counting your shadows in your head and figuring out if you're going to have time to go into a ni or an ichi. :(
Well I guess if you're only going to 37 it won't be bad. Leveling ninja to 37 on my hume is so lame. Not because I'm doing it again per se, but because I already have all the leet ninja stuff, and I'm constantly occupied, but on my hume there's pretty much nothing worth casting.

I'm used to macro spam during incredibly nasty situations on BST and solo THF, trust me. I can't say it's as busy as Ninja tanking of course, but bear in mind, I'm still pre-Ichi. I have plenty of time to hit macros.
Besides, I live and die by gear swaps mid combat at this point. Seriously, I find it hard to believe NIN is immune to them.

Lines shmines... I just ran past everyone and clicked on the ???, then tried to do the same for the last battle, but it didn't work very well, I wasn't fast enough to hit the quest choice in the menu first, I had to sit there and spam the Hut Door and try to choose the quest first for about 2 hours before I finally got it. The battle was so easy though.
Square-Enix needs to tweek something about these NPCs. A 20 hour recast timer on them is very harsh. If you die or it dies it's obviously gone, but even if you just zone out its gone too. It's pretty cool having a NPC parter though, you just have to be REALLY careful or that's it for the rest of the day.

I've done one of the hat quests so far. The Yag one apparently requires fully leveld bone and goldsmith subs in addition to very high cloth craft. Finaly got mine crafted.
On a much happier note, me and some friend became the first people on our server to beat the last CoP BCNM. Won't go much into the fight, but it is very very fun. It's not nearly as hard as other CoP BCNM fights. This one almost seemed to be made just to entertain the people in it. It's also the greatest BCNM arena they've made so far. Will go back and rewatch the cut scenes for pictures, but I did snap this one of the BC area as it pans back at the end. Was very nice, stars above the fight, the world circling below (That's quifim at the bottom of the picture).

Hey, I'm back after ages to come and pay a little visit to AN...
This really sucks. I can't play FFXI anymore, because I had to study all Summer long, and now College is starting next week... So I had to disactivate my Content ID, just did last night...
Bachaka, my character, finished with lvl 31 THF & lvl 20 WAR. I wanted to get NIN too, but because of school, I never had time to play. Plus, when I had time to play, I used to wait for a party invite when I was a lvl 31 THF and it took like 3 hours each time to get in a party, or start my own, and each time the party sucked or one player ruined it all. Basically it seemed I was going to be stuck at 31 forever.
Still, I have good memories of this game, I made alot of friends, my LS was awesome... Yesterday I told farewell to my LS and they could'nt believe it... I could'nt believe it too, these guys almost became real friends to me, all this time I played with them... lol I even had a tear in my eye, it's kinda weird though, because I knew I was'nt going to be able to play with them for the rest of my life, and they were really cool...
It's a weird feeling, quitting FFXI after playing for a long time... You'll see when you do... I already miss that game, lol...

Been catching up on FFXI lately.
Today was the beginning of "Buffalo Blitz". Hunted Toro all day and nobody knew how to obtain the HQ version of Red Sash (aka Dash Sash) until a minute ago.. when a bigger version of Toro named Miura spawned. Pretty fun event.
Dash Sash (LVL1/Def:1/Enmity +2) will come in handy when leveling NIN.
There are a bunch of new NM's so being the NM hunter that I am, I decided to camp Noble Mold. Information on this NM is either a hoax or he has a extremely severe pop time/requirement because I have been camping Noble Mold (Sanctuary of Zitah btw) for 4 days now (14 hours straight per day), and no sight of it whatsoever. I would stop camping this NM, but this location (E-8~E-10) is a great leveling spot for my Fellowship NPC.
Speaking of Fellowship NPC, she leveled to level 32 today. I decided to give her a Uchigatana great katana and make her an attacker. It will be interesting when I level her tomorrow.
Also got a Yagudo Headgear but I haven't gotten a PT together to fight the Yagudo NMs. I'm just wearing it for looks as of now.
My next goal is to try to get a Selene's Bow from White/Black Coney in Ulegurand Range if I remembered correctly. They only spawn during new moon/full moon and you have to trade a carrot to ???. The bow is a great alternative to Euryto's Bow.
A quick rant. I hate the fact that items I used to make money from is now rare/ex such as Leaping Boots (now known as Bounding Boots), Archer's Ring (Shakiree Ring now), and although the Peacock Charm (now known as Peacock Amulet) never dropped for me, I liked camping it, but now I'm not so sure.

I've had fun with the new NM's that require special pop items. My LS has tried some of the alliance sized fights. My favorite was the new NM in attowah chasm. The pop NM is an antlion and can spawn other antlions, and one of the ones he spawns will drop the boots. Nice boots too, the boots even have added bonus of pissing off RDM becasue they can't use them.
LVL 75 BRD BLM SMN WHM
-30 HP +30 MP
+3 MND +3 INT
Enhances Fastcast (Or gives fastcast if you're not /rdm)
Next I want to fight the new NM for the new WHM heavy armor (Looks like Hauby). LS did it a few weeks agi but I didn't have pop item ready.

Another thing I wonder is how they will abreviate it, like RDM, WHM, BLM. I'm guessing something like BMG. Even though thats a picture format. <_<

People are under the impression that they HAVE to name it xxM, because that's the current pattern. And they also seem convinced that it'll end up being BUM. I can only hope POL won't be so retarded as to call them BUMs.
The Geomancer thing had me excited, even though it was hard to tell if it was true or not. I'm almost done leveling Ninja and I'd love another "alternative" type tank. White magic is for sissies! Oh well, we'll see what happens. God I hope Blue Mage isn't the only job they add.

We (me and two other players) have been monopolizing Argus/Leech for the past week now; 1/6 on Leech King 0/1 on Argus. But now we have to start all over due to back to back maintenance... Damn you SE!
Good news is that I am looking forward to the update. New Antlion and Intulo Beastmaster jugs (how fun!), fellowship NPC level cap quest (my NPC is currently lvl 47), Limbus and more.
Tried White Coney (Ulegurand Range) to try our luck with Selene's Bow. This NM is ridiculously easy. All it does is HP regen once it has TP, which can be prevented easily by stun or sleep. No drop though. And it only appears during 100% Full Moon by trading a SanDorian Carrot to a rabbit footprint. Maybe next time.

Well, Last week I fianlly Said goodbye to all my friends and dished out Gil and item presents to a bunch of friends, and deleted my characters.... Pretty sad ocassion. I... might be back after I'm done with basic training and am settled wherever it is I go for my Tech school, but I'll probably be on a PC... or at least on the XBOX 360.
Also, barring that I'm done with XI for now, I'm pretty much done with Animenation... Place kinda did a downward spiral a long time ago, but whatever. Nice knowing all of you.

All this is from my point of view. With that said,
FFXI Pros:
Co-existence of Japanese and North American players. Since I know some Japanese, I get the best of both worlds (I can create PT pretty fast depending on job and level).
The option to level multiple jobs. While some (or most) people cannot stand the amount of time and patience it takes to level multiple jobs to 75, I love the challenge. And the sub-job system is also unique.
Wonderful stories available for completing missions and quests.
Multiple crafting. Raising a craft to 100 is no easy task and I love the challenge. It's really fun.
Beautiful graphics on the PC. I feel sorry for PS2 players who are missing the potential graphic beauty capable on the PC.
Infectious BGM. Some of my personal favorite BGM: Sanctuary of Zi'tah, Hall of Gods, avatar battle fight, Windurst BGM, Pso'xa (sp?), Oldton/Newton Movalpolis, and more.
Cons:
Lack of soloing, excluding Beastmaster (I hate SE for nerfing BST!). While people can solo, the main purpose is to create a party to level. This factor has forced some (or most. I don't know the statistic) to quit even before they have reached level 65~75. If you don't have patience and dedication, FFXI is not for you.
Rude players that exist in both JP and NA. This is very common in most MMPROG, but from my experience FFXI has more.
Valkurm Dunes. =P
Aggressive monsters can be a problem at times, especially in places like Garlaige Citadel and Crawler's Nest, where I have seen people train aggressive monsters to zone, causing a huge mess for others. But the source of the problem isn't the monsters being aggressive, but how certain players handle this type of situation.
MPK.
That's all I can think of now.

MPK.
which reminds me. Here is a favorite picture of mine...the people still living are the gilsellers, except for Enwen...who probably died soon after this screenshot anyway.
http://xs42.xs.to/pics/05331/picture008.png
This was taken after the patch that makes monsters stronger the longer they've been claimed. Of course, with the gilsellers resorting to their shady methods, it made it very hard to both fight and keep away from them at the same time, so Serket eventually lived for too longer and killed everybody it attacked in one hit (I think I took roughly 1200 damage in one hit, that's how I got knocked out).
And for anybody that doesn't know, the way they do it is drag monsters that have area-of-effect abilities that hit anybody in the area over the people that claimed Serket so that they also take damage and die while trying to fight. Then the gilsellers take Serket and finish it off.

The infamous MPK scene around Serket is far too familiar. ; ; It really is frustrating when you claim Serket and lose claim due to MPK. And the GM will either do nothing, punish the wrong people, or answer your call late. I hope you got those gil sellers back somehow.
Was the 1200dmg you took a normal hit? And is that with stoneskin and phalanx? 1200 dmg normal hit is really insane. Even if it was a TP move, 1200 is unusual from Serket. ~_~

Heh, the same thing happen when I was trying to kill Amikiri with my 3 friends. The 4 of us got it to haft health, and my brother who was the NIN died, so it got unclaimed, then some LS came and took it. The whole LS died to it, then another LS showed up and died. It was pathetic. Then the 4 of us just killed it in front of a bunch of people. Then I finaly got my Kamewari. ^_^

; ; well...he had been claimed for about 45 minutes at that point (originally, only one person was fighting it from another linkshell, NIN trying to keep it claimed) then gilsellers started to try to MPK him so he had to run away while fighting it. Then other linkshells showed up and he eventually really got killed so other linkshells (like my own) tried to take it. Of course, gilsellers tried to MPK everyone else too, though in our case, Serket had been under claim status so long, that the new patch buffed him up.
I'm pretty sure I did not have Stoneskin or Phalanx (I mean, I went as a RDM/WHM. I don't anticipate getting hate). But hate I got. And I did it only casting Bio II, for whatever reason. And yes, 1200 damage normally. It was not like I was wearing Errant or anything that lowers -VIT or -def either.
The point is, if it weren't for the gilsellers, one of the legitimate group of players there would've beaten it.

OK, I did some looking up and know how to get Diablos. The problem is, do I have all the fights lined up?
(Already have Promy-Dem from a year ago 'fore my abscense)
Do Mea
Do Holla
Minotaur
Mammet-19 Epsilon
Overgrown Rose
Diremites (I have a fear of Lizzies thanks to Tormentors, and everyone hates Mimics)
Diablos(40 cap)
Diablos(uncap)
Those are the only Promy missions with fights up until Diablos, correct? Did I miss any? The rest are just cutscenes, right? Perhaps I skipped a fight or two from skimming over allakazhams reviews. It seems easy enough. Especially since These fights are capped. Well, some are. SMN is supposed to be very good for these missions too, so that's a plus. I've got a party to take on Diablos 3-5 and then again uncapped with my BRD to summon him. The problem is, the promies. They don't want to do the promies with me because they said it was a headache they could live without. I don't blame them. Hahahaha
And to be honest, I doubt i'll ask them for the Diablos run. I've just finally come back to the game without so much as a 'bye' since when I left only to return now for BLU and the 'new summon'.
Oh well, are those the only fights lined up?
Fenrir was easy, and I got him with the group who wants to help me get Diablos. We did it so easy with such an unconventional party that it shocked us when we actually did it. Their confident they can do it just as easy with Diablos. Why are they so confident? This is from people who have fought both him and Bahamut, and do Sea raids regularly. I trust them.

I think you have the fights correct. Of course, there are a lot of CSs, traveling and farming for items along the way. As for the uncapped Diabolos fight, he can be defeated easily with a manaburn party and a RDM/DRK for Stuns. Basically 4BLM + RDM/DRK + anyone will easily win as long as Nitemare doesn't break through Chainspell. I went as the RDM/DRK with only 2 BLMs and no tank and still won. Not saying that's the only way to beat him, but you do need at least a few stunners if you're going with a "normal" party.

Heres a little thread about Diabolos and how easy it is to beat him. The first poster has included a nice video of the fight. In that video notice how the tank was NOT in the PT before the battle. I haven't tried this trick yet, but it seems the people on top of the platfoorm was never drawn-in. They killed him in about 30 seconds or less. Anyway, check the video out.

Key to diablos (Avatar fight), least for my group was Black Mages. We were one of the first few groups to arrive at the BC after the initial update, and on our second try, were the first to win. We had a BLM BLM BLM RDM WHM PLD set up. Our first try we noticed that one the PLD died, and the mages went all ouy, Diabolos' HP went down fast. So on the 2nd go, we just had the PLD provoke and invincable. We also had the PLD not draw his weapon, so as not to give Diabolos any more TP and cut down a bit on his skills. The BLM's and RDM proceeded to nuke all they could and it was fine. We didn't try any trick with not being pulled down, becasue we've found it doesnt always work (Least that was our experience with the Promathia mission fight).
Overall the fight wasn't bad. I'd definatly say the Fenrir fight is more of a challenge. Though, overall, none of the fights are to tough. Fenrir's 2 hour can wreak havok, but that's about it.
Far as when you can fight, your list looks about right. SImple answer is you need to reach Chapter 4 of the Promathia storyline.

So I was considering getting this game and making a Red Mage character. I understand later in the game there are some advanced classes you can get. From what I read Ranger excites me the most. Anybody here have any Red Mage/Ranger characters that can offer some tips? Domo Arigatou Mr. Roboto.

My Red Mage is only 52, but from my experience, it will be a chore to level it's sub-jobs; it's not necessary to do so, but it will be nice to have access to Black Mage, White Mage, Summoner, and Dark Knight. You won't have to worry about Dark Knight til' lvl 74, though. Certainly have Black Mage and White Mage available. Some people like to use a Summoner sub-job for MP boost and auto-MP regen, but I think it's better to have access to certain spells like paralyna, erase, and escape -- a BLM/WHM specialty. So, instead of leveling Red Mage first, think ahead and level White Mage and Black Mage to 37. I just recently leveled my Bard from lvl1 to lvl42 in about one and a half weeks (in that time period, I farmed myself a Mary's Horn, did the Siren Flute Quest, and AF1 Paper Knife Quest), so, it really shouldn't take that long (depending on how much you play, of course =P). Red Mage don't have many expensive spells, so that's a plus. Red Mage is a really powerful job once it reaches 75, especially with a Ninja sub-job. Uber.
My Ranger is LVL 75. And I personally wouldn't recommend leveling Ranger as a newcomer. The reason is because it can get expensive. You have to pay for your ammos (costs tons, especially if you don't have woodworking leveled. And those bullets.) and Utsusemi (if you sub Ninja. and you most likely will). And you will also have to raise Ninja (again, Utsusemi), which means you'll need to raise your Warrior. Otherwise, it's a really fun job to play, and very powerful.
If I were to start all over again, I would raise Thief first. Why? Because it can help you bring in gil. Once a thief reaches lvl15, it has an ability called Treasure Hunter. It improves drop rates. So you can make faster gil by farming. We all know how important gil is in FFXI. =P Crafting is also an option.
Or you can ignore my precaution and go with the flow and have fun. But just be ready for some elitism.
JOJO
January 17th, 2006, 10:58 AM
Coincidently, Red Mage & Ranger are my 2 main jobs as of now (75RDM and 61RNG). Everything Lunay mentioned is correct. You might want to consider leveling up a subjob first. Most people opt to use BLM as the most poplular choice, then WHM 2nd (my preferrence). In either case, you're usually expected to sub WHM for BLM or BLM for WHM anyway. Once you have chosen your subjob(s) and ready to proceed with RDM, you're expected to act like a backup healer and enfeeble for your early levels (1-40). You can melee with your sword for these levels but if you just concentrate on casting with wands, you'll do just fine. Once you hit 41+, you'll act as a full support member with "Refresh" among other things. The nice thing about RDM is their versatility in party situations and unmatched solo ability at the higher levels. At level 74, you can sub Dark Knight for Stun and Ninja for Utsusemi Ni. For experience parties, I stuck with WHM all the way to 75 because I liked having the status ailment spells, Curaga, Divine Seal and extra Mind. Eventually, I ended up with BLM, DRK and NIN subs as well...also working on SMN and SAM sub too.
As for RNG, yeah, it's going to be expensive especially if you're starting out. Most people already have a higher-level job before taking up RNG or NIN which is what you'll have to do since you will have to have NIN as one of your primary subjobs. Up to level 24, you'll probably end up subbing Warrior since Ninja won't give you Utsusemi Ichi until then. Then, you'll be expected to sub Ninja as you can protect yourself with shadows and dual-wield the Archer's/Hawker's Knives. If you want to lessen the cost of RNG, you can level Woodworking a bit just enough to make Holy Bolts, which is an acceptable source of ammo all the way to 75. Of course, that means you're only using Marksmenship and by endgame, it's nice to have Archery leveled as well. Speaking of endgame, you might also want to have Warrior subjob available for the extra damage (but less accuracy), but that's far into the future. As mentioned, having THF leveled to 15 (to sub for RDM or RNG) is good for farming.
MagicianCamille
January 19th, 2006, 10:56 PM
Yeah so I read up some FAQs on GameFaqs and decided to go with White Mage as my first sub-job, then later, Black Mage.

Jae:
You've probably done a lot of research so may have heard that this game takes a lot of dedication and time...And if you end up liking it, you'll get addicted fast. Anyway, with that said, FFXI is a very team-oriented game. To get far, you'll need to be able to party with other people in both experience parties and missions/quests. By the time you get to a higher level (60+), you're reputation matters alot in order to do end-game things. So at the very least, play your job(s) well and keep your gear/spells updated as much as possible.
As for Whitemage, it's a very good job to start with even if it doesn't end up being your main. As you know, you won't start with a subjob, but you'll be very much needed for your first few levels of partying (level 10+). In the meantime, you will have to solo your way (or maybe duo with a few friends) around the area of your beginning city: Either Saruatabaruta, Ronfare, or Gustaberg. Whitemage, until you reach 70+, is very easy to afford. You'll more likely need to focus on MP+ gear since you're mainly healing/buffing constantly. Mind gear would be 2nd priority since it increases the strength of your "Whitemage" spells. Also, the "Club" will be your main weapon of choice. Use whatever you want solo but when you start partying, use the Willow Wand +1 if you can get it since it gives you +Mind. Once you hit level 10, you'll more than likely starting partying for the first time with 6 people in "Valkrum Dunes." At level 18, complete the subjob quest (ask around for help) and start leveling Blackmage as your subjob. This will eventually provide you with Aspir, Drain, Sleep and Warp spells as well as more MP.
Aside from partying, you'll need to farm in the meantime to make money which can later be invested into crafting. Farming is basically killing weak monsters for their drops and selling them via the "Auction House." Use the Auction House wisely. Items only sell in either singles, stacks of 12, or stacks of 99. Always check the "Price History" to see how much whatever items you want to sell actually sell for as prices fluctauate. Put up your items to "compete" with that price. Keep in mind that you'll be charged a small tax just for putting it up and that if it doesn't sell after 3 days, they will automatically be sent back to you. Some items can't be sold at the Auction House but you can always sell to other people individually or to NPCs. Never sell to NPCs if you can do so at the Auction House since they usually provide next to nothing. Another tip on making money is always keeping "Signet" on. Just ask any guard at the exit of your city. Having signet (lasts 1-3 hours at first) allows you to get crystal drops off monsters which can, yes, be sold at the action house in stacks of 12.
Lastly, get used to using the Auto-Translate function. Basically, it's shortcuts for several terms/names/places in the game which is automatically translated into Japanese for the actual Japanese players. For instance, type w-h-i then hit Tab. You'll see a list of terms, one of which is probably Whitemage. Anyway, get to know alot of people and either be yourself or role-play if that's what you want. Here's a list of useful links:
http://ffxi.allakhazam.com/ - General info on everything and alot of Server-specific discussion.
http://ffxi.somepage.com/ - Useful lists of items/quests with no forum discussion.
http://www.theorderls.com/phpBB2/ - Endgame forum discussion. This is where the "elitists" go to. Think of it as the SRK of NA FFXI.
Just curious, what server are you on and what's your race/nation?
MagicianCamille:
Some of what applies to Jae about farming may help you. It's been a while since I farmed back in those areas, but I personally like killing Crawlers and Bees in West Sarutabaruta, though I think you probably should be level 10+ first. Silk Threads go for about 60k-70k per stack on Sylph server. Cyrstals alone will give you 1k-6k per stack. The birds there also drop fire crystals which are usually the most expensive.
MagicianCamille
January 23rd, 2006, 08:12 PM
Actually I'm playing the 360 beta, so the economy is normal.
A stack of fire crystals gives me 450, stack of Earth, Wind, or Water gives less than what you'd get in a shop. I do believe the rarer crystals such as Ice/Darkness give about 1k or so though.

Holy cow! Inflamation up the wazoo now!
I have not played for about a year and a half, so now I am suprised to hear from a friend of the recent prices in the auction house...
I was in Bastok, I usually sold Fire crystals for abut 1K for 12. Now my friend says that you can get a good 5-8K for 12. Just about everything raised price. Everything from scrolls to armour... Hmm.
But I'm thinking about buying this game again. I played WoW, Lineage 2 and Guild wars since I quit FF11, but I might just crawl back to it.

I still have the standard gear minus a robe increase I got for a mission. Now I have to try to give these fliers that no one wants out. How do I start farming?
tenshi_a
January 24th, 2006, 03:48 AM
Sounds like you're in San D'Oria... the flier mission is an evil waste of time; my fellow linkshell members have informed me...
I'd suggest if you want to start farming, as a whm, party up with someone and heal them as they attack things, split the goods you receive, and sell them in the auction house... either that, or switch to a melee type class (war or mnk) and go out and kill things. I don't know what sells well in Sandy; probably dark crystals from fungi? I dunno...
Compare prices between the AH and shops when it comes to buying; the shops may be cheaper.

I salivate at the thought of being in a completely "fresh" server. No high level crafters, no high level jobs, no gil sellers(?), etc. It's hard to give farming advice to people in a fresh server since the economy is totally different.
But here are a few things you can farm as a low level:
Sandy area - In Ronfaure, you can farm sheepskin and turn them into sheep leather (receipe: 1 dark crystal, sheepskin, windurstian tea leaves, and distilled water) yourself. Buy the windurstian tea leaves and distilled water from a vendor (NPC). A stack of sheep leather in my server went for around 30,000G last time I checked. Or you can use them yourself to raise leathercraft.
Jaggedy-Earred Jack. This rabbit NM (notorious monster) is a lottery spawn in East Ronfaure. From my experience, Jaggey spawns anywhere from 50 minutes to 4 hours -- but it's possible he can spawn earlier or later than my estimated time. He drops a Rabbit Charm (LVL7 Neck piece Def: 1 Agi+1 Dex+1 Steal+1). But be warned, his drop is extremely low. I have gotten the drop 2 times out of 50+ times I have killed him. Treasure Hunter is highly recommended.
Windurst area - In both West and East Sarutabarta, there are tons of Crawlers. They drop an item called Silk Thread. A stack of these are selling for around 70~80k on my server, but that may be different in a fresh server since I am assuming there is no high level crafter, YET. So, check your Auction House.
In East Sarutabarta, there is a NM named Spiny Spipi. He drops an item called Mist Silk Cape (Def:3 MND +3 Light+1(?)). It's a level 10 Back piece for mages, so, for those raising mages might want to keep it. This cape is going for around 200k on my server.
Bastok area - Compared to Windurst and Sandy there is not much to be farmed here from Quadavs (turtle looking monsters). But there are some sheeps in South Gustaberg for sheep leather. I guess, you can farm for Bee Hive Chips on top of a small mountain in N. Gustaberg. Also, there's a NM called Stinging Sophie that may spawn in place of a regular Bees. Drops a Beestinger (LVL 7? Dex+1 Agi+1 and a very low delay of 150). Goes for around 20,000gil, not much, but it's something at leeast. Or once you are high enough, go to Koschat Highlands for faster Bee Hive Chips and Sheepskin farming.
In South Gustaberg, there is a NM called Leaping Lizzy. She was very famous for her drop called Leaping Boots. But due to certain issues, Square-Enix had to make her drop to an Rare/Ex (the "Rare" tag means you can only carry one of that item, no duplicate. The "Ex" tag means you cannot trade to other PC, or sell it in the Auction House.) drop called Bounding Boots (Def: 3 DEX+3 AGI +3). So, you won't make any gil from Leaping Lizzy. But it's a very nice boots to own.
There's also a NM in Koschat Highlands named Stray Mary. She drops an item called Mary's Horn (Lullaby +1). This horn is almost a must have for Bards. Selling for around 800~900K on my server. But it's hard to camp her without Widescan (an ability of Ranger and Beastmaster which can scan the area to find the monster you are looking for. Ranger's Widescan has a bigger radius compared to a Beastmasters.)
Last but not least. Always cast signet (a conquest point system that allows your nation to dominate a certain area by killing easy prey or above monsters) on yourself. This allows crystals to drop from easy prey or above monsters. Which crystal type you get varies with its monster type. Get a stack of crystals and sell it at the Auction House.
Have fun and work the AH. =P

Stupid question, but there's still a monthly fee for this game right?

Yep. I dont know if they downed the price yet, though.

12.95/mo +$1/mo for every extra character you own.
I've never seen an MMORPG price go down. Only up. And I believe they will only continue to go up if anywhere. They are getting bigger, more costly to develop and maintain. Out dated box prices will go down, but the fees will stay strong, or raise.

Speaking of, MMO games in general, do they usaully charge more depending on your characters? I know L2 has a two dollar per character free, and apparently FFXI does too.

I hate to double post, but did anyone SEE the event that's happening on Febuary?!
Like, if you talk to a moogle in town, they will seriously try and hook you up, romantically, with someone from one of the other continents.

This year's Valentines day event will give players a Dream Wand. Dream Wand will let players cast reraise on other players, but supposedly not on yourself. The wand looks like something from Sailor Moon or any magical girl anime. =P

When I had FF11, it charged me 13 a month, plus 1 dollar(I think, maybe a buck fifty, or 2. But nothing more then that.)Per extra character.
But WoW and ShadowBane do not charge per character.
And I love the FF11 events. My favourites are still the Halloween and Christmas ones, but those were years ago. They may be different.

I think the whole thing is hilarious. I especially can't wait to get a good laugh out of the people moving in on chicks.

What do you mean it moves slow?
It does on the 360, everyone huddles around the auction house and tries to sucker people.

That's odd, it never lags\slows for me around there, and I play it on the 360.
Edit: Oh wait, I'm in Bastok, that's probably why

You must find the perfect chocolate pieces that match their race and personality. You can obtain a NQ Charm Wand just by matching the race. I'm not quite sure how to obtain a HQ Charm Wand, yet. This event is pretty diffecult, especially since there is no auto-translation for the words describing their personalities.
