You don't really kill Maat, he stops the fight.
Warrior can literally kill Maat in two weaponskills, I don't see why a samurai couldn't do it in 4.

BRD can also beat Maat if they can hold out for a nice Spirits Within.

What is Maat? I was confused and even my brother didn't know what you meant and he's killed alot of stuff.

Maat is the old man who gives you the quests to boost your level cap. The final level cap boosting quest is to wipe the floor with him. He's as a level 70 of your class, but he uses H2H proficiently, up to and including using Asuran Fists, the second most powerful H2H WS.
...Also, drama sucks, I'm unhappy, and am seriously contemplating either quitting or soloing all the god damn way to 75.

^_^
Well, I finally beat Maat on my third try! Second time, he casted Paralyze at the start and it was over so it wasn't worth mentioning, hehe. Anyway, I feel so relieved now that it's over after all the preparation and discouraging stories from other RDMs. Boy, was I nervous for that last one! Unfortunately, I wasn't able to record my match since I left my PS2 in my brother's room for the larger television but no VCR. Below is what I can remember for any RDM interested. Note that I didn't have any elite or HQ gear:
Equipment:
Level: - 70, Enfeebling/Elemental magic maxed
Main: - Dark Staff - for Sleep, Sleep II and Dispel
- Wind Staff - for Aero III and Silence. I bought this soley for this fight.
- Ice Staff - for Bind and Paralyze. I borrowed this from my brother (60 BLM).
- Mythic Wand - for curing, Stoneskin and Blink (although unaffected, really)
- Fencing Degen - for Convert and start of the match (+10 MP).
Sub: - Numinous Shield - for Convert (+10 MP) and in conjunction with Mythic Wand/Fencing Degen
Ranged: - Morion Tanthlum - borrowed from my brother too
Head: - AF
Neck: - Spider Torque
Earring Left and Right: - Cunning Earring
Body: - AF
Hands: - AF
Ring 1 and 2: - Electrum Ring - for Convert and start of the match
- Aquamarine Ring - for curing, Paralyze, Silence, Stoneskin, Blink
- Zircon Ring - for Aero III, Sleep, Sleep II, Bind and Dispel
Back: - Red Cape - (outdated, hehe)
Waist - Royal Knight's Belt +1
Legs - AF
Feet - AF
Items - Pro-ether (47k), Yagudo Drink, Melon Pie, Hi-ether, Remedy (in case of Paralyze or Silence)
Fight:
All spells listed above were macroed including Cure 4, Cure 3 and Chainspell. Only items, Protect III (explained later) and Water III (backup nuke) weren't macroed. Anyway, I used a Melon Pie and then entered the BCNM on Windsday (not Darksday) with my +MP gear. I didn't bother doing that trick by entering gimped since I didn't want to give Maat too much time to buff. Upon entering, I manually casted Protect III. I did this just in case of Asuran Fists after my convert in case Blink doesn't absorb it. I hoped that and Stoneskin would be enough to survive. I didn't use Protect IV because my +MP gear wouldn't cover it and because I didn't have it, lol. Then, I took a Yagudo Drink (no Refresh) and casted Blink/Stoneskin with my macros. I immediately ran up and saw Maat buffing. Couldn't tell what it was, but it didn't matter. I casted Sleep II knowing full well it could be absorbed. It went through and landed! I then had to cast "minor" spells to get rid of Blink so I used Paralyze, which was absorbed (1 shadow down). I went for Dispel and got rid of En-water (useless, but had to be done). I then casted Bind which I believe landed. Next, I tried Silence and it was aborbed (2nd shadow gone). So finally, I casted Dispel until Shell was gone. It had no effect, so the beginning was over.
So now, I was ready to attack and began with Chainspell from a distance. Ignoring minor details, I did the RDM tanking technique by alternating Aero III with Blink/Stoneskin when they were down. I managed to land 3 nukes until my MP was under 126 (enough for Aero III, Sleep 1 and 1 MP for convert...don't want to convert with 0 MP). At this point, he had a little over half-life left...so I knew I may need to use the Pro-ether, thus needing a 3rd sleep to land. At around 90 MP, I threw a Sleep 1 (my 2nd sleep attempt) to save a little MP. Being in Chainspell mode, I would be able to spam Sleep 1 four times before Convert in case he resists. It landed and I immediately converted and healed with Cure 4, then Cure 3 to save MP again. I continued the tanking technique and then Maat also Chainspelled. I ignored it and continued to "race" with him. My Chainspell wore off during my 6th nuke of Aero III so I had to survive just enough to throw another Sleep II (the 3rd sleep attempt) without Chainspell. Luckily, it landed and I used my Pro-ether right away. The time it takes to use those potions is an eternity in this fight...especially since I cannot cast 5 seconds after I use it and I was Binded. Once I was able to cast, I had to re-apply Blink and thought I needed 2 more nukes, judging by his health. To my surprise, my 7th and final Aero III finished him off while he as still asleep with me standing right in front of him. Clear time: 3 min 45 sec
Anyway, that was my approach on the fight and everything went almost according to plan. A lot of luck is still involved as all my sleep attempts worked. Certainly not the only way to beat Maat, but Chainspelling from the start (after de-buffs) does minimize the need for sleeps, I figured. Good luck to all other RDMs out there who may need to face Maat eventually. Hope this provides at least some insight for this battle. I'm 71 now, and am looking forward to wearing some Errant gear at 72 (finally a change in armor).
BTW Guru, don't let drama get to you. Just take time off if you must. You have a genuine love for the game and gave me lots of advice.

Oh, nifty strategy, especially the precise MP timing. I wish I could comment more, but me and magery don't mix too well. Even if it is luck-based to a minor extent, that's still damn good planning. Also, thanks for reminding me how I can get it recorded.
Yeah, that's what I was planning. Play Growlanser III, which has been sitting on my shelf for too damn long, then go back to FFXI. Farm up my Scorp Harness/Flora Cote, And I believe Darksteel Dagger, and I'll be ready to tear up some more. I'll only be logging in for CoP Stuff before Growlanser III is done though, since a group of people I know may or may not be interested in doing it. It'll be just like before, only without a static. Or a linkshell.

RPGuru, if you're taking a leveling break from FFXI, you might as well invest in ore while you're away. :) I recently got a 5/10 crop of fire ore. Just under a million. <3 Takes 3-4 weeks real time for them to grow, but if you dont play as often, like me, gardening is a great hobby/gil-making thing. Just log in twice a day to check the sapplings. :)

I don't know how long the break is (Growlanser III is supposed to be short) but I DO have Tree Cuttings, which if memory serves are the baseline for Saplings. That's a good idea, thanks, Aelice. All I'll have to do is farm up enough for the pots, correct? I've never tried growing plants... I don't like the idea of making my money by literally farming, but at the moment, it sounds good.

Tree Cuttings grow into Tree Sapplings, yep! ^_^
Sadly, ore grow best in Porcelain pots, which cost like 6k each. X_X Good investment, though. :) The thing about ore/sappling gardening is patience. Sapplings take like 20 days to grow from cuttings (DONT feed cuttings any crystals, and they, by default, grow into sapplings).
I know people who have 2-3 mules, because of the 10 pot limit in each mog house. Even if you only get 1 ore from a stack of sapplings, you still earn profit. If you need more info, I can PM you some because I know I can trust you with whatever 'secrets' I have (Plus, you're on another server! XD).
So if you wanna do a good ore test run, get 5-10 sapplings for your mog house, and see if your ore recipe works, then tweak it as needed. I only needed to do slight tweaking myself, so I'm happy. ^^

Heh. I tend to be pretty close lipped about specifics, so no worries there. But yeah, a PM and some basics would be good. I seriously know zilch about gardening, except that I used to do it with Vegetable seeds I used to get through methods I don't remember. I think I'll just grow the cuttings I have for now into saplings; In theory, at least, my cuttings should come in at a steady enough rate (Given my farming) for me to be turning out Ore on a fairly regular basis. Thanks for the help, Aelice.
...And dood, stay with Spirit. I still consider those people family. Stay with said family.

I'll never get that god damned Temple of Uggly coffer. It just isn't going to happen. I don't understand how people get that thing. Sure I have the key now, but I was never worried about getting the key. Belle went and looked at every spot she could reach and it wasn't there. If she can't even find it, how in the hell am I supposed to find it?

That stupid coffer has 4 spawns behind some locked doors. 2 spawns are behind one of the doors that need a Ugglieph Key to open, the other 2 behind the door where you ahve to beat the Guardian Doll to open the door.

Thankfully Haubergeon is only 2 levels away. And yes, I consider earning the insane amount of gil it costs much much much much more possible than ever getting that god damned coffer.
But stats aren't really the issue. I want that armor to complete my AF set. I've wanted AF ever since I started playing and now I see that I may never get it all. Nothing less than an act of God will get me that coffer.

Maybe I haven't made it clear just exactly what it takes to find this particular coffer. If the coffer is not spawned miraculously in one of the very few accessable points, then the rest of them all take something major, and something completely different from the others, to get to. Having to open doors while also having to be invisable is the least of my worries in that place.
But anyway, I was promised today that I would get help finding to tomorrow. Natually, I'm skeptical, but the person seemed to think he had everything under control. We'll see how it goes, or even if it actually goes at all. I was give no details of who or how I'm and getting helped, only that I would get some tomorrow.

Aelice raises a fair point. People camped Castle Oz coffers for money before that update. Which is worse: Having a Coffer in a hellhole, or a relatively easy location that is camped to hell and back by loads of people? Imagine, if you will, camping Lizzy during NA Primetime on Saturday, only where you can't sub THF. That's roughly what trying to get a Castle Oz coffer was like.

I went in there yesterday, and it's just about the same as the one near Zi'Tah, it's no worse or better. If it was this hard I don't think there would be any Samurai in Artifact gear, but that's not the case cause I was in a party last night where another party had a SAM in AF gear pulling for them.
Michael
March 9th, 2005, 11:09 AM
The Boyahda Tree (inside Zi'Tah) is a piece of cake coffer. All of the coffers are in the front of the tree , where people xp in the mid 50s. All you need is sneak, no invis. There are no doors, etc. I farmed Boyahda coffers. Much like I farmed Kuftal coffers. Those keys drop like crazy. Any time I was there and the group had some downtime, I would run off and find a coffer.
See, Uggalepih, you have doors. You can't interact with objects with invis on (though you can with sneak). So, to open a door, you need to drop invis, then quickly put it back up before something can see you. That something could be a bee, or a tonberry. In Uggalepih, this is insanely difficult. Then you have the dolls and the pots that around some doors. Meaning if you dont see it, and you cast invis, you're screwed.
The only "easy" way to get the Uggalipeh coffer is to have a friend that's level 72 or higher. At that point, they would no longer get aggro, and you could have him run you through, he opens the doors, you stay invis.
Or you could get to the grudge reset room, where there is one coffer spot. Just pray it spawns there, and not do anything except watch it for a couple days.

I've been studying the FFXI story and features today, still have alot to go. But I'm reading some Vanadiel Tribunes, and reading about features and new features of playonline, Tetra Master, FFXI etc. I also read the new version of the rules of FFXI. I'm on level 12 going on to level 13 *Which hopefully I will try and quickly get to level 14, because I don't like the 13 number*.

I have one HELL of a story to tell about my adventures in the Temple of Uggalepih today. First of all, I was in there for 7 hours today. Well, let me take that back, I had to homepoint back to Jeuno twice, so I wasn't in there for the 7 hours straight.
But anyway... I went in there with a 74 DRG, a 65 PLD, and a 59 BLM. We made it to the floor where the coffers spawn and the 74 DRG ran around to see if it was in any of the accessable spawns. Naturally it was not. This coffer hunt was very literally just beginning. Next thing we had to do was get a Uggalepih Key drop. After killing what seemed like way too many Tonberry (no one had THF subbed) we got one. The DRG used it to do something I didn't even know about, some kind of paintbrush key item. She got this paintbrush key item and with it she could open a hidden door by standing for 30 seconds painting a picture, natually, the coffer was not behind the door.
Next up was a door that required another one of those keys. The DRG said we didn't need one, there is a trick to opening the door. This trick got us killed every time we used it. But I'm getting ahead of myself.
The door was past the Temple Guardian. I lost count of how many times we killed that thing. Then in the next room was the NM Doll. The door was up the steps he patrols. The trick to opening it without a key is to have a mage stand as close to the door as possible, wait until the NM Doll is out of range, and cast any magic continuously until the Doll comes back. There is a Magic Pot on the other side that will, if it's close enough to the door, aggro the caster and open the door. Unfortuantly, behind that Magic pot is a group of high teir Tonberry, which checked Easy Prey even to our Dragoon. The Tonberries linked and we all died. The BLM had a reraise scroll he cast on him, and used it just as a Tonberry turned around. Dead again instantly. We were behind that locked door, a raise was impossible. We were forced to Home Point.
The PLD and the BLM left. (The PLD wasn't with us when we all died, he had to leave earlier) I had to ask my in game fience to come and help the DRG and I. She is a 57 WHM. We returned to the temple, and the DRG checked every accessable spot again. Still nothing. We checked the painting room again, nothing. We were sure it had to be in that locked door behind the NM doll. The NM Doll had actually despawned, so we thought we were in luck. It took forever for that Magic pot to come in range of the WHM spells, but as it did, It opened the door and stood in the way. The DRG and WHM were able to get in, but I could not pass through the Magic pot, and was shut out. The Magic pot was still inside the door, so I Provoked it, which made it open the door again. I went inside to find my 2 party members BOTH in the red from another Tonberry link. We all died once again. The WHM cast Reraise on herself before hand.
Now comes the worst part of the night.
The WHM waited until it was safe to reraise herself. She did, and raised the DRG after the magic pots left the area. The WHM and DRG used Prism Powders and rested until Weakness wore off and they were fully healed. This took a very very long time. The DRG was going to attempt to pull tonberries one by one until they could reach me to raise me. She linked them again. The fight was long and very intense. The DRG and WHM Mithra duo fought bravely and admirably, but were both defeated once again. The WHM did have reraise cast on her again. They repeat what they just did again. At this point, my death timer was at 18 minutes left until I was forced to home point. That's how long we were in that locked room completely surounded by upper tier Tonberry while I lay dead and my two mithra companions huddled in the hallway against the locked door resting. The DRG uses a Prism Powder and looks for the coffer first. Guess what is not in that room... They need to kill the Tonberry standing over my body to raise me. This time the DRG pulls one Tonberry, but another wanders over in mid fight and links anyway. THIS Tonberry uses Throat Stab on the DRG. Both of the mithra are defeated again. The WHM did not have reraise cast. We home point once again.
At this point the score is: Temple of Uggalepih: 4 -- Kyoudai and company: 0
The WHM had to leave, she had to work early in the morning, plus she lost even more exp than she gained today while we exp partied. She did not say much, and she did not say goodnight to me. I worried about her after she was gone.
The DRG is determined to get this coffer for me. So far, this level 74 DRG has died 4 times helping me look for this coffer. She is still with me becasue she is a wonderful person and a great friend. But at the moment there is no one she or I knows willing to help us. We both ask people we know and come up empty. She says that she is upset that so many people aren't willing to help and some of her friends were even just ignoring her request. She decides that we will go it alone. I say that is dangerous, we shouldn't. But she says we can handle it if we don't link anything. We board the Airship headed for the Elshimo Islands.
Round Five in the Temple of Uggalepih.
We know where the coffer is now. There is only one place left, and it's behind the OTHER door you need a uggalepih Key to open. The DRG and I try and solo the Tonberry Cutters to get another one to drop, but we somehow managed to link the entire room we were pulling from. She says to Zone. I do so, and I assume she is right behind me. Turns out there was a THF camping the Bees in there for a Hornetsneedle quest drop, and the train would have killed her. The DRG decided to take the fall... I have now caused a level 74 Dragoon 5 deaths in one night.
As I search for someone to raise the DRG, one of her friends who is a 66 WHM is finished partying and will come and raise her. Not only that, but he'll help us get that Uggalepih key for the last locked door and the only spot in the Temple we haven't checked yet. We link more Tonberry (the little bastards are IMPOSSIBLE to pull because they sit there and toss Shurikens at you, and will not follow you) But because we had the 66 WHM, we won. After a clearing a 2nd room of Tonberry, we get a key. The DRG leads us to the locked door and as she opens it, I see a room FULL of Tonberry all huddled closely together around something. Guess what that something was.
Yeah, the Treasure Coffer. Yay, you say? Just listen. The DRG says we need to clear the area so I can un-invis and open the coffer. She aggroed every Tonberry there at once. There were SO many in there I couldn't get through them all to get to the coffer. I dropped invis and opened the coffer just in time to see both the DRG and the WHM barely haning on in the red. The DRG drops and the WHM uses benediciton to late. He falls very shortly behind her. They tell me to get out fast... I couldn't run out, so I hit my Scroll of Instant Warp and left like a coward.
Yes, I did get my Temple of Uggalepih coffer... but let me tally the score for you:
Level 74 Dragoon: 6 Deaths, 3 of which were Home Points.
Level 66 White Mage: 1 death, which was a Home Point.
Level 59 Black Mage: 2 Deaths, one after a Scroll of Reraise, then a Home Point
Level 57 White Mage: 3 Deaths, 2 were Reraises, and one Home Point.
And last and certainly least...
Level 57 Samurai: 2 Deaths, both of which were Home Points.
But I really must say that the level 74 Dragoon who helped me is such an awesome person. She really really is amazing. She was with me from the start and stayed until the end. Even when no one else would help and it was just us two alone in the Temple, she was there wanting to help me. Even after she died repeatedly and had to homepoint, she got right back out there with me. Never at any point in the night was she upset either. I couldn't thank her enough, and in fact she was getting tired of me repeatedly thanking her, I think.

This should give you and Naka a idea too, it's just xp, Belle told me she just laughed after the 2nd HP, you will always be gaining xp, a few deaths now and then don't affect that, the game is about adventure and discovery not about how to get to 75.
I would've come, but I was...busy...with someone >_>;

Summoner AF body is sitting in an Uggalepih coffer too.
The exp lost per death caps off. It's not always 10% of the level, I want to say the max is around 1750.
At 74 you're already in the highest level groups, xping off of the highest xp-able mobs, etc. Doesn't really matter if you die a few times, because it's not like you're really progressing anywhere anymore. All you do xp wise at that point is a literal "xp farm" for merit points.

Summoners don't have it that bad. SMN was really designed to be a job you level AFTER leveling up other jobs pretty high. So peopel in this category enjoy a bit easier time at things.
The summons are expensive to aquire due to all the meds and such you need for the LVL 20 fights, or you need a higher job to get the Avatars (Really high if you want Fenrir).
They have a nice pair of rare/ex gloves at lvl 20 that require fighting a lvl 75 mob in temple of Ugglieph. Only after searching temple for the offering needed to spawn the mob.
The Astral Signa, the best single staff a SMN could have (Not quite as good as having every HQ elemental staff) can probably easily be classified as the rarest drop in the entire game.
SMN AF2 drops in dynamis are all but a myth you sometimes hear in stories.

Well, Dynamis is kinda a null on this point. I mean, really, if you're there, you have a higher level job anyway. That said, is that from a smaller relative percent of Summoners in Dynamis? Every summoner added is another chance something will go wrong and Astral Flow will wipe the floor with everyone in the area.

Yeah it was kind of a moot point. But I thought i'd throw it in anyways :P
I've never heard that the jobs brought to dynamis help with drops of certain AF's. Any mob in Dynamis can drop any job AF (assuming that AF drops in the paticular dynamis you're doing that is), it's not dependant on the mobs job. Just looking arround and in the Dynamis runs ive been on, you hardly ever see the SMN AF2, even SMN notice this.

Even on Hiatus, I learn something new. I don't really care about the gear, honestly, since of Thief gear only the Armlets and Boots are worth a hoot (Although those Armlets really do kick ***), but mostly, I just want to do it. Maybe get the Mandau completed, although it only leads Perseus' Harpe by a point of damage, and the Harpe is easier to get, despite being off a raid HNM and having an abysmal drop rate.

First full set I saw someone have was a Summoner. An elvaan summoner at that.
Honestly I probably see more summoner AF2 than anything else.
But maybe summoner just has **** for gear options, while other jobs never really wear their AF2. I don't know, I can't stand playing casters in most games.

Heh. I would hope so. I'd assume it's the same as generic whm/blm/rdm gear that they'd wear for the most part, but for some reason I see a lot more summoners sporting their AF2 over other jobs. I know the other jobs have it, I think they just like showing off their god drops more than their dynamis drops.

I'd like to have the RDM AF2 set myself. The hands, feet and legs is clearly superior to the AF1 set for casting, without the penalties of Errant gear. And of course, you can swap the Duelist Hat and Tabard if you want +30 Enfeebling or Fast Cast V. I haven't joined an HNMLS as of yet, though it'd be so easy for me to do so on my server at least. Ideally, I'd like to wait till level 75 (73 atm) and have all 4 subs available (WHM, BLM, NIN, DRK) so I can be fully prepared and not feel like I'm leeching from the LS.

Well I got some bad news everyone. I canceled my Content IDs for Final Fantasy XI and Tetra Master. The reason? Because I can't play a long time, and have the urge to keep on playing. I can play a rpg that is 100 hours long. But FFXI is WAY too long and I'm getting nowhere in the game, even with help with people. I'm not anti FFXI or anything, its just that I can't keep playing it. Sorry. I can play other online games though like Doom 3 online or Quake 3, because those games aren't ultra long online. Sorry.

Now that I'm 58 I'm trying to start farming the gil for that ugly Haubergeon that I'll be required to wear -_-; I can't wait until I'm 70 and can get that new 70 SAM only gear. That stuff is awesome and well actually allow me to look like a Samurai rather than every other melee job 59 and beyond.
Square really REALLY needs to make a piece of head gear that can replace that god awful ugly *** stupid looking Optical Hat. I hate that thing with a passion, it's so freaking hidious looking and every melee is expected to wear it from 70 on.
But before all that... I need to somehow get 1.65 million gil for the Haubergeon.
JOJO
March 15th, 2005, 06:47 AM
Hehe, true Hiko...Although I don't think it looks hideous (Optical Hat), it is kinda goofy looking especially on SAMs or DRKs. Maybe some cool looking visors or shades would be better and make more sense, actually. Good luck farming for the Haubergeon. Great stats, but still overpriced considering that it's a "necessity." You could probably update to the Hauberk later as well. Anyway, I almost have access to Sky by joining pick-up parties, through shouts in Jeuno. Without spoiling anything major, I have ZM8 complete and really only need to set up another party for ZM12. 9-11 and 13 are trivial from what I found out. I love doing these missions I look forward to doing them again when my brother or other LS friends need Sky.
On another note, what do you guys think of the sudden influx of WAR/NINs? Personally, I think these guys are great cuz they're so versatile. They can be melee, tank (especially at 74), backup-tank, pull, SC Light easily, fight bones and make great SATA partners. Though they don't really peak until their 60s, they get lots of invites afterwards.
RPGuru1331
March 15th, 2005, 08:57 AM
Eh, if I want a DD WAR, I'd honestly rather take a WAR/THF. I never realized their power til I saw SA Sturmwind, then realized "Holy hell, that IS a rocking DD combo". It only ever gets better, as they have good SA'able WS. Shield Break is also one of the single most useful debuffs I've ever seen (Although if that's what you plan to do, /MNK ranks about even in usefulness, til 60 and /SAM). The Eva Down almost reminds of a Bard and Madrigal. Only real advantage on /NIN is as you said, opening Light chains, in terms of DD. SATA partner's, heh, not an issue if you have a WAR in the party; I mean, they've got Voke, and better defense then any other SATA buddy.
Granted, a GOOD WAR/NIN also makes a good tank. But there are too few of them on Leviathan >_<
Michael
March 15th, 2005, 09:14 PM
Warrior is versitle at every level. I'm leveling warrior on my hume female right now.
There are too many simple "look at me I'm a war ninja" though. war/nin does not make a warrior versitle. What makes a warrior versitle is the fact that they can sub anything they want as a damage class, and they don't give up any important abilities. Afterall, it's their main class that gives them double attack, berserk, and provoke.
war/nin unless tanking, isn't too special until 55. There's nothing worth it along the way, honestly. Before 55 as a dd for the group you sub thf and as already mentioned, Sneak Sturmwind for absolute craziness. On top of that you have the break abilities, which can really help the party in certain areas.
From 55-60 ninja is great because of rampage. You finally get a 1h axe skill that's really really worth using. Offhanding something like the windurst cp +12 attack sword is especially nice for that.
60 you get raging rush, and it's back to thief, or at this point, samurai. Warrior is the only job that can really get away with subbing samurai. Samurai has two uses, depending on the party. You can either use meditate to open the fight with a break and still skillchain regularly, or, if you have an insane tp class like ranger, you can just pure raging rush > sidewinder/slug shot ~50% (including a blm for burst) every single fight. =p
65 it branches off. Warriors compliment dark knights really well at 65 because they can open light with mystral axe so the drk can close with spinning slash. That's another ninja moment. 65 is pretty much the level where you'll want to have all three subs readily available given the party setup.
Steel Cyclone is sex.
74 you get gimped utsu2, as it only gives 3 shadows subbed. But it's still pretty damn good, and a warrior can take the hits a little better than a ninja. They can hold hate much better because they actually do damage, but they're going to take a lot more hits too. Even having both utsusemi, they don't have the evasion of a ninja, and they're missing that extra shadow. But I guess so long as the hate is in one place it doesn't really matter if they take more damage than a ninja.

ZM 12 is simple. It's a magic pot NM fight in QUicksand caves. I've heard some jobs can solo. ZM8 was "the hard one" . ZM8 is usually really hard or really simple depending on set up. Other than the magic pot, everything between the Fight in Delkfutts Tower and finaly getting sky access is nothing but running arround for cut scenes. None of teh Zm fights are to hard. I onyl have the last one to do, but I hear he's not to hard with the right set up. Only really hard fight is the ZM14 fight. And then it's only hard if you opt to do the Divine Might quest, rather than the Arc Angels mission. In Arc Angels you have to fight each of the crystal warriors, in any order with a 6 person party. Divine Might is an optional quest you can do instead. In it you get to do an 18 person alliance fight in a BC. You have to fight all 5 crystal warriors at once. It's a very hard fight, but it's challenging, it's the only 18 person BCNM that I know of, and you get to chose from 5 very nice rare/ex earrings when you're done.

About ZM14, can you complete the mission as normal (one at time) and then do Divine Might as much as you want for the earrings? I assume you can and actually only want to do Divine Might for the challenge. Of course, it would be a normal alliance with a lot of kiting and stuff.
Anyway, looks like I'll finally be starting those Promyvians that I've been pushing aside for so long. I'd probably have to go as WHM for the 30 capped ones unless I finish off leveling my BLM sub. But first, I might as well cap my RDM at 75 since I'm already close.

As for ZM 14 and divine might, im not to sure about that. I dont know if you can do 14 and then do divine might later. Im almost positive you can only get one of the earrings no matter how many times you do it, so chose wisely (If they're useful for you). 7 mil for me. Now I'm going to do you a favor, DRL, and list all the uber items every class needs, as far as I know, and the relevant location. You'll get to see some comparison on how lucky you are.
Haubergeon:
Usable by: Most heavy melee
Purpose: Acc and STR boost.
Cost: Roughly 1.8-2 mil.
Relevant Drop: Damascus Ingot
Common Sources: Aquarius, the HNM Leaders of the Beastmen.
Peacock Charm:
Usable by: Every melee
Purpose: Acc Boost
Cost: 10 mil
Relevant Drop: Itself
Source: Argus, the NM that says "Hahaha... I'm just going to pop once every 3 days. Maybe. Sometimes I let my drinking buddy the Leech King go in my place."
Ochiudo's Kote
Usable by: MNKs, SAM, some Ninja
Cost: 1 Mil
Relevant Drop: Itself
Source: Mee Deggi the Punisher. One of the few NMs actually camped by Gilsellers.
Scorp Harness:
Usable by: Ninja, Thief, and Dragoon
Purpose: Acc boost, Eva Boost
Cost: 5 mil
Relevant Drop: Venemous Claw
Source: KSNMs, HNMs
Astral Ring:
Usable by: Every mage
Purpose: MP Boost
Cost: .8 Mil
Relevant Drop: Astral Ring
Source: The BCNM We've been screwing up, among other BCNM 20s.
Former Source: The dreaded Castle Oz coffers. Ever camped an NM? That's sorta what it was like, except for the part where you were at a huge disadvantage to start with, and where you have to do legwork just to get the thing to pop (I.E. to get your key).
Snipper Ring:
Usable by: Every melee
Purpose: Acc Boost
Cost: .6 Mil
Relevant Drop: Archer's Ring
Source: One of the only mobs ACTUALLY camped by gilsellers, Stroper Chyme.
Emp Hairpin:
Usable by: Thief, Ranger, Ninja
Purpose: Dex boost, Agi boost, Eva Boost
Cost: .9 Mil
Relevant Drop: Itself
Source: Valkurm Emperor
Leaping Boots
Usable by: Thief, Ranger
Purpose: Dex Boost, Agi Boost
Cost: .9 Mil
Relevant Drop: Itself
Source: Leaping Lizzy.
Monster Signa
Usable by: Bard, Beastmaster
Purpose: Chr. Boost
Cost: .7 Mil
Relevant Drop: Itself
Source: Hoo Mjuu the Torrent.
Gluttony Sword
Usable by: Paladin
Purpose: Vit. boost
Cost: roughly .8 mil
Relevant Drop: Itself
Source: Skull of Gluttony, a difficult NM that requires a very rare item to pop.
All of these are "required" items for their classes. There are certainly others that I'm forgetting. You have two options:
A: Pick up Electrum rings. Lose a friggin' 10 MP.
B: Shut up, stop whining, and get your 1.6 mil
We're friends, but that doesn't mean I'm not going to be honest here. If you're going to quit because you're unwilling to pay 2 Mil for a LUXURY, you've got issues. You have a VERY viable substitute. Shut up, buy it. Be happy that
A: You HAVE a substitute
B: You had so much as the opportunity to get the drop from the source.
If only every class could be so lucky as to have those options.

I'm dying for gil at this point.
Giddeus is a good money maker true, but it's not enough for the level I'm at, I can't make as much as I should be making. Pashow seems to be everyone's choice, but that's just it, EVERYONE farms there, and I can't get any drops worth a damn. I'm 59 Red Mage right now (I've tried Qufim Island too) and I need a good spot to farm some good money otherwise I'm going to be farming for over 7 months just to get to 61.

If you guys farm Giddeus, bring sickles!!! If you find harvesting points along the way, grab them while you're farming mobs.
Seeds are like 5-8k a stack.
Cotton is 6k a stack in Windy and sells fairly quick.
Mugwort is 120k a stack and sells pretty quick in Windy too, even as singles.
Flax is what, almost 4k a stack?
Crawler coccoons are 500 each but not worth the invt. space.
Toss out winruit, tea leaves, marjoram.
I was helping a friend with yagudo necklaces, and made like casually 60k in an hour, where half the time was spend running around killing yags, and 20 min was actual harvesting time.

For the past few weeks I've been sitting at 60 WHM and haven't budged one bit. I've mostly been helping LS members with missions/quests as they come along. Other than that it's been striclty gil-making. If you're looking for a way to make some good gil I'd suggest giving a try to mining. I'm not sure about your server but on mine the best place for this is Oldtown Molvapolos. There's usually very little competition there since it's a high aggro area. However around 60 (I think as low as 58) you can run around without any worries.
Some good ores that can be found there are zinc, platinum, silver, iron, darksteel, and gold. Also, many moblin items can be mined there such as Moblin mails, armor, and helms. If you have a craftskill like goldsmithing the mails can be worth ~45k if you desynth and HQ a gold ignot. If you have alchemy (like I do) you can desynth the masks you can get glass fibers and either sell them or make prism powders which sell quickly and for good gil. Even without a craft skill the moblin items generally sell very quickly.
Using mining and various other methods I've managed to make over a million gil in the past 2 weeks. If you're dedicated enough and do the right research it really isn't that hard to make gil.

Well, that's what I was planning on starting after I finish messing around on BST (Note: I don't know when that is). On top of the mining, a Thief can take a minute or so out of the mining and steal from the higher level Moblins for a Mith, then Hide and return to his business. I'm just high enough to avoid aggro out there, so it seems like a decent way to make cash; Based on the people I've asked, Molvalpalos is roughly 10k/Hour more profitable then what I make, with minimal investment.
Also, level 24 is suck, on so many levels, with BST. That is all.

Yeah, I held off for a while, since you'd started to get some steam judging from your profile.
Partially following Lynx's advice, and partially from common sense (Dumping Ore because it took up space was getting REALLY old, if you understand), I'm levelling Smithing and GS, and Alchemy because money's actually starting to come in. A long time ago, I read that investing money into a craft was the best way to make cash in FFXI, and it's always seemed true, so now, I'm doing it...
Goals are GS to 20, for Silver Ingots, and Smithing to 15, for Tin Ingots, for now.
Alchey's ultimate goal is, eventually, 100... as DRL has been saying whenever I mention it, "Equivalent Exchange, bitch" So far, I'm at 1/5th Metal Alchemist

Another good way to making GIL. Though, this method is getting trendy, it is still effective since we are dealing with regular spawns.
Raise goldsmithing and farm Gold Orcmask. Which can be desynthed into Gold Ingot. I recommend being goldsmithing 60 though. You can ATTEMPT to do this at goldsmithing 49, but with lots of failure. Skill 55 you can desynth these pretty well.. but I recommend going to the GS guild for advance synthesis support. At 60+ you can desynth the masks pretty easy. If I commit a whole day to farming these masks, I can probably make a million easy... I have gotten 33 masks once.. and probaly lost 4 or 5.. so you do the math 28 or 29 gold ingot times the cost of gold ingot. I also have desynth mog house support. Oh, and Orcish Trooper drop these masks in Davoi & Castle Zhval, but Davoi has much more Trooper spawns. You can also steal mythril from these orcs. Not a bad way to make GIL, especially if you have a Thief 75.

Eurytos Bow is definetly worth 3 million. This bow is useable up to lvl 70, possibly up to 75; it's a very powerful long bow. Or you can use the cheap bow that drop too often in BCNM 60 (bah, I forgot the name.. it has been a while since I played seriously. Anyway, it has too long of a delay.) or you can use the Power Bow +1. It's really not necessary to have the Eurytos Bow but it would be nice. Another reason it's worth 3 million (people are paying 10+ million now) is because it drops from a HNM. And there are 4 different HNM that spawn around that area I believe; Northern Shadow; Eastern Shadow; Southern Shadow; Western Shadow. Each of them drop a different item. One item that drop is Cross-Counter for MNKs, and 2 others not including Eurytos. The reason for the price increasing might be because of the drop rate. The drop rate was really terrible and it might be even worse now. Also I wouldn't doubt it if it's still over camped. I personally love using my Othinus Bow which you can get for free from Wyvernpoacher Something in Gustav Tunnel. Crossbow is way better anyway.

Just because it's rare doesn't make it worth the price. :(
At 64 my nin/war gets near +70 attack from berserk. Do I notice a hugely significant increase in damage? Nope. :( Ebow adds 23 ranged attack. Okay, maybe 1, 2, perhaps 5 points to your minimum damage? OH BOY. That's not worth 3 million to me, especially when you've already got the alternative. Othinus Bow is hot. ebow for a few levels sporting a (previously) 3 million price tag for a class that's already cost you more than a million in unrecoverable arrows is just a "look at how much money I have" item. Unless you got the drop, then you wield it all you want, because you deserve it.
ebow is eastern~
Something like scorpion harness is worth 3 million to me (not 6..but 3). For certain classes, there are no true alternatives. For the chain classes, well, they're set.

Ebow on odin is 8.5 million.
It has 5 more damage on top of a 70,000G war bow +1.
Don't get me wrong, it's a nice bow, but the price is entirely based on it's drop rate, and spending 8.5 million on a tool to shoot off another million that I'll never see again just isn't worth it to me. Figure how unstable the economy is, by the time you get a new bow, it'd also suck real hard to lose half your money.
Enter: Othinus Bow. Crazy damage for a marksman weapon, though it uses bolts instead of bullets.
Figure Othinus Bow = free (with time investment)... xbow + darksteel bolt = 104 dmg. +18 ranged attack.
Ebow = 8.5 million... bow + bodkin arrow = 99 dmg. +23 ranged attack, +7 ranged accuracy, 3str 3dex.
Don't forget that ranged accuracy is like candy. Friend counting his job abilities I think he said something like +88 accuracy. Rangers don't really miss enough that 7 accuracy would be noticable over what they already have.
Sure the ebow has the potential to increase the max and raises the min damage on a sidewinder, but the slug shot is already 5 base damage points ahead!

Yes, I agree completly. Your point is common sense. But I have always been fond of uber equipment in FFXI. Juggernaut, Hauberk +1, Spectacles for my BST; Scorp +1, Winged Boots +1, Peacock, Thiefs Knife, etc. I say if you can afford it get it. These things will sell, so it's almost like renting it. And when I raise a job to 75, I sale these items and buy the items that I need for my next job to get to lvl 75. I still can't find a Speed Belt for sale. -_-; I want to raise my Ninja to 75 and I would love the haste +6%.

I'd normally agree, not necessarily on the +1 (too little of a difference to warrant the insane price variance), but yeah, it's nice having the "uber" items.
The problem is with scorp harness, peacock, thief's knife, juggernaut, hauberk, etc, there's really no alternative that can get the job done better. =p Ebow is indeed a status item, but it's a status item that can also easily be skipped without "gimping" your character.

Yes, I agree. It's not a necessity.
About the +1 items. I got most of them through my LS mates except for scorps +1 which I took a risk and let a stranger craft it for me. I bought the venomous claw for like 2 million (at the time of purchase). And me and the crafter agreed that if he synthed the +1 I would give him a million GIL, if he synthed the regular, no charge. And if he broke it... well I am out of luck. Anyway, he got his bonecraft spectacles and apron, went to Windurst.. and I crossed my fingers... then I was sooo happy when he synthed the +1. :) I gave him the mil + a 500k tip I was so happy. But if you are gonna buy something that can be synth.. try to obtain the +1 through a help of high level crafter. I know a guy who can synth Amemit Mantle +1 alot... I'm not sure what his trick is but he will synth it for you if you give him the Amemit skin plus a small fee. Another way to make GIL... take advantage of other high level crafters.

This question goes to anyone who's played Ballista: Have you consistently seen any one Beastmaster familiar that either annoyed the hell out of you, or that you considerred dangerous? I'm torn between the Mandragora for it's Monkness and Sleepga, the Hare Familiar due to Whirl Claws, and the Sheep Familiar for it's Sleepga >.>
Oh, and good luck on Worm's Turn. That thing looks plain evil to me.

Definetly the mandragora. But I would like to see someone use Amigo Sabotender in ballista. Last time I checked 40k for a single jug though. -_-; And can only be used in the no level cap ballista since it's a lvl 75 jug.

Our Pld (who was a very good and close friend of mine, who decided to quit the game last night as well) didn't have an orb so was just along for the ride to help and didn't want a cut of course. Consequently, we only did 5 runs and came ou 4/5.
second to last run or last run was the funnest imo. one of the rng's died 3 times in the one battle lol, and was rambling that being creamed by the worms so severly was the most awesome thing that had ever happened to him in the game lol. After that, our PLD went in and beat down for a bit but slowly died and d-lvld.. no big thing since he was quitting, but no AF boots for after =/. anyway, this entire fight I'm keeping track of time and by this pint we have about... 7 minutes, and 6 worms left.... we beat that run with 26 seconds left to spare... it was so damn fun lol

Anyway, sorry to see ya go, Lynx, but no one can play forever, methinks.
Also, although hollow to hear from me, grats on 75, JOJO. It's still an accomplishment, I think, although I've seen a bunch lately >_<. Seems like everyone and his uncle is winning the "race to 75" but me.
Also, heh.. I ended up using the bunny familiar as I was only level 27 for the matches. After my first target ran away, I realized why people use Tigers, and it chagrined me a bit that the thought hadn't occurred to me sooner. It was fun though; BLM in the first match /cheered when he saw he was on my team for the second. Minor notes:
You can't do self-targetted things while Voked. It's really, really, really annoying to not be allowed to Utsu or Heel my pet just because I have to focus on Guy X. Jug Pets, at least, remained in a "Ready: Fight" state for the duration of the match though; That is, they didn't lose TP for just standing around. You can bring local fauna into the match, but it could get grizzly; If you try and bring local mobs into the fight, they'll uncharm when the level-cap is placed on you, and attack. However, you can still recharm them and bring them into the fight. Naturally, this is only useful at level 30, but the Raptors and Couerls in Meriphataud, at least, are roughly low-high EP at 30, and it's seemed like a Jug Pet is only as good as an EP (If I'm wrong, please correct me, Lunay). On a pseudo bright side, pets follow the rules of aggro during Ballista. I thought this would hinder me a bunch, until I realized that the Diaga from the RDM meant that after my first target was beaten, George the Rabbit would go after the RDM. Never got to see what happens with, say, Firaga, but then, I want anything that can -ga dead anyway, so there's no problem with that. No one ever melees the pets, so I don't think that'll be an issue.
I wanted to use the Mandy pets, but I looked up how to get them. As the kids say, "LOL no". One Elm Log = 1 Flowerpot Bill. If you HQ, he's Flowerpot Ben instead, and seeing as how that's level 41, that's about as useful as a poopie flavored lolipop to me right now. Homonculus (Uncapped Black Mandy) uses a Philosopher's Stone as it's active ingredient, and is a level 86 Alchemy recipe, so although it's yield is either 4 or 6, it's still a bit low for the costs. Factor in that they don't outrun players, and it's just not worth it for Ballista. Yeah, I could farm humus, but in the time that'd take, I could easily farm for 12 Elm Logs.
God yes, get to 75 and run around with an angry cactuar in ballista.
While the prospect is amusing, there'd be too many people for 1000 Needles to do much on ;_;

I have seen the Flowerpot Bill jugs in the AH for about 50G each. So, yeah it's better to just buy it then synthing it. Homuluncus is a little pricey 4k~6k per jug, but I like to splurge at times. I love showing off my unique pet. And yeah, your pet is usually EP to you, but if I think some mobs that are harder to charm like Ooze, Opo-Opo, and Leeches are tougher due it's traits. Too bad none of these mobs are available during ballista. What do you sub with your BST during ballista? Nin, or whm?
RPGuru1331
March 30th, 2005, 05:57 PM
I subbed Nin, but at 30, you can't really tear off shadows unless you're a main mage. I plan on swapping to a Cent. Sword offhand when I actually get to 30; I'm not a huge fan of the swords in this game, but the lower delay helps take shadows off, especially since you fight EMs instead of IT; My damage seemed to be a bit lower as well, but, I'm comparing against mostly hume/Elvaan Warriors, possibly with Berserk up, whom had 3 levels on me, as well as access to better armor, namely, Centurion's Gear and the Eisen set. Not sure how different it'd be at higher levels. I honestly can't see subbing WHM outside of soloing/BST-only party, and the latter isn't likely to happen pre-35. Anyhoo, I'd love to AH Flowerpot Bill Jugs, but there isn't a big stock of them in the AH. Even if I could get a few, I wouldn't, for a few reasons; First, I go through almost a stack a game (partially has to do with my suck), and the small supply isn't going to handle it. Second, runners. Tiger pets make running very, very hard, Petras or no. And after seeing Roar a few more times in exp (Mostly on the receiving end), I think I'd be better off with Roar over Dream Flower. Sure, a few people would use Remedies/Catholicones. Not everyone will have one though.
Minor note: I've not given up Thief. But for the duration of the event, HELM is basically useless; It turns up eggs too often, and I can't leave my PS2 logged in long enough to properly get rid of them. Therefore, I'm levelling BST to pass the time. Once the event is done, back to the salt mines.
(Plus, this gives me a great time to get seals I'll never get to use; Go me!)

SMn makes a great sub for a WHM. Gives you more MP and you get a few nice status blood pacts like blinkga.
As for sub for SMN. BLM is a great choice if you hate being invited to parties. Seriously though, BLM is a lousy sub for SMN. Any exp party you go to will expect a SMN to be backup or even main healer. None of the avatars make very good attackers except for fenrir, and only a very very small percentage of summoners will have access to him at early SMN levels. The Bloodpacts can take a minute or more to recharge sometimes, so in many cases, keeping the avatar out just isnt worth it.

I hate summoners that think they are contributing greatly to offence by keeping their avatar out and going into "attack mode." I love summoners BUT I hate summoners that like to show-off during PT time. Summoners avatars are indeed powerful, but no need to try to show off during PT time. Thank God I have only met a few horrible summoners. Most of the summoners I know, know their place and job when it comes to leveling. They will help PT by giving us stoneskin (so useful in Crawlers Nest against Darters AoE), Fenrir's +stats, and help heal, etc. And I hate summoners who don't have their summoning skill maxed. :)

saying you hate summoners that don't have the skill capped seems a little harsh.
I mean, seriously, would really like to stand outside a city casting summon after summon after summon, spending hours on end to raise the skill after a good pt run? I wouldn't, I'd be bored out of my mind and want to go pt some more.
I have friends in my LS who do smn, and from what I understand it can take nigh 3-4 hrs to cap that skill it lvl's so slowly.
That's just a really harsh and uncaring thing to say to sumn'ers.

I bet you hate ninja that don't hold hate or utsusemi.
I bet you hate rangers that don't use bow or crossbow.
You do realise that both of these jobs spend just as much time as it'd take a summoner to keep their skill up to be able to perform their job as well?
What makes summoner so special that they don't need to take the time to perform their job to the best of their ability? I find farming boring as hell, but I have to do it. This is an MMORPG. It's a time investment. The time you spend in game is not only your time, but the time of others. This is why I'm gear oriented. This is why I'm an "elitist." To me, it's not about having the best gear on myself, it's knowing that I'm giving every pt the best product I possibly can.

It is a shame summoners are not built to use their summons for battling but just built to use them for the bloodpacts.
But still, I hope someday they implement a battle mage. What redmage should have been. Having spells to increase you physical abilities, and the ability to cast it on others. Stuff like En-Fire that the redmage has is a start. That would be my dream job, shame I doubt they would ever put it in. Probably be considered too powerful or something. :|

It is a shame summoners are not built to use their summons for battling but just built to use them for the bloodpacts.
I had one party setup where that was actually preferable. THF, SAM, PLD, RDM, BLM, and SMN, at Revelation Rock in Altepa. The SAM would open Distortion for me or the Paladin, and the mages each Bursted their biggest stuff; Blizzard II from the SMN (Shiva), Blizzard from the RDM, and I forget what the BLM cast. The SMN left his avatar out to get TP to boost his Blizzard II, for the most part. However, this is abnormal. Moreover, a SMN needs his Summoning Skill capped for his Avatars to have a decent chance to build TP anyway. The ones who don't cap their skill are the one's who's Earthen Ward drops in 1 hit, or who's Rolling Thunder deals 1-2 points of damage on non-lightning resistant mobs.
...I partied with a SMN 3 nights ago, if you couldn't tell.
Edit: One note; Raising summoning skill sucks, massively. That was the last thing I needed to mention.

I don't much care for summoner, but I'm not opposed to them. So long as their summoning is leveled, the stoneskin is nice when I'm on Kanzen. I don't mind them fighting with avatars so long as they keep the right buffs up. I guess that's just because they have so much mp, and with a ninja tank, they aren't doing anything better with all their mp.

Only avatar that has any right being kept out is Fenrir and Carbunkle. Carbunkle only if the SMN has carby mitts and is equiped to allow no MP loss. If Carby isnt taking any MP, i figure, why not leave him out. he wont do much, but he will do a bit. Fenrir isnt bad to keep out, only if the SMN is not the main healer. Other avatars, even with SMN skill maxed, have very very lousy accuracy. Fenrir does not, and also Fenrir can hit as hard as most melee on exp mobs.
SMN used to be a very rare job before Square gave into whiners and put in those lvl 20 solo fights. If not for those fights there would not be many SMN out there, certanly not as many gimp summoners. Most SMN had another high level job that allowed them to ge the avatars before they started. Other than the lvl 20 fights, SMN is still designed to be leveled after leveling another job. First 20 levels, you cant do much healing becasue you'll only have cure I and a lower healing skill. Having carbunkle only is just silly. The rare/ex carbunkle gloves for SMN are level 20, but require fighting a lvl 75 mob. When Square releases Diabolos and Phoenix as avatars it will likely require you to have access to area's you only get by doing Promathia missions. Phoenix will probably require having access yo Al'Tau, which means people can't leech it (have to go though a tough, uncapped BCNM by that point).

592 on the dire bats out in Delkfutt's and KRT. Closer then I like for comfort, especially given that level gap, but if you wanna play burst damage, I'll play. We'll see how you like SATASEDE, with Yellow Curry for food.
...Soon as I have all that crud I want. The 9 Mil of it. Not really a fair comparison, I'll grant, but I'm not going to get high enough to do SATASEDE without it.
.Question though; Did you have Mighty Strikes up for that? If so, the damage seems low. Last I saw an SA Sturmwind was for 483 on the beetles out there, so given that I don't understand how Mighty Strikes works, I would naturally assume double damage. However, a 100 point difference strikes me as equally odd
Michael
April 4th, 2005, 12:00 PM
No Mighty Strikes, I wasn't even eating food. Just sneak + zerk. Of course, double attack fired... so with sneak up, it was in essense a four hit sturmwind...
When I'm in the 60s, we'll play this game more seriously. Especially knowing a taru friend of mine pulled off a 1152 Raging Rush as war/nin. =p
Sadly I never get any good sturmwinds with Mighty Strikes up. I always do 300% with aggressor and berserk up when I do it, and while it's higher than normal, I never get that extra hit in... and that's where all the damage is. A typical sneak/sturmwind is anywhere between 250-400 damage, usually in the mid-upper 300s.
Hopefully my lifebelt will help misses when it comes to sans-thf weaponskills. For some reason I've only once missed the second hit of sturmwind after a sneak attack, but I do it all the time with regular sturmwinds. Hell, I even had a 2% return sturmwind while tanking yesterday. :(
If I had Mighty Strikes up for that though. Oh my god. Probably would have been more like 800 damage.

It's actually more like 970,000, but I get sell my brigandine and my viking axe along the way. Other than that, there's not much else.
I was planning on getting to 60 then doing sam and nin to 37, but it's looking real tempting to do that stuff now. If I get that stuff leveled, skill up my axe and sword, etc, I can sell my emp pin for 700,000G, and do BC40s like whoa. 3 people... at least 6 runs because I know my friend has a bunch of seals. Hopefully the rdm we find will have enough for 3 orbs too... 9 runs! that's like, potentially 1.2 million per person, if we get either erase or utsu2 on every run.
Of course, thinking about it this way, that puts me at a total of 1.9 million, just enough for haubergeon.. ugh. HELM again is inevitable. :(
...maybe I should just helm ~800,000 again this week and see what happens.

300% TP? Oh, that's how you did that, you little ***** =D
Ah well, you'll probably be able to eclipse my single WS damage at 300% til Endgame. DE gains acc, not damage, and Shark Bite is only 2 hits, so I can't sink SE into it nearly as well (On DE: 20% of my current HP converted straight into damage, assuming all 4 hits land; They might too, since SE has a built in like +30 Acc. Add regular SATA damage to this, and then something another.. 3-4 hits. One thief on Alla, Ixaera (Same nickname as me -_-) posted a screenshot of nearly breaking 1k on Torama (Like, 957). Which isn't bad on a level 61 character.
Edit: Also, Ballista with Tiger = Fun. I had a couple of people in the first match get soloed by George just because they ran away, and didn't ever stop running. Razor Fang was more damage then Raging Axe at equal TP (Which surprised me on a roughly EP pet), and Claw Cyclone was nifty shadow stripping AoE. Let's not even discuss Roar. People weren't voking though, at all. I figured the Pallies who had /WAR would, but no, they just kept attacking and curing themselves. It's kind of sad when you can get a Pallie in the middle own team with no backup because the other Pallie can't be botherred to cure him. We even got out alive, which was just an insult. Plus, Mithra BST with Tiger pet. How's that not fitting?

Only problem is that these jobs get expensive real fast. Ive tried to camp some NM's but so far I am 1/2 on Spipi, 1/1 on Hoo Mjuu, 1/1 on ashmaker, 1/1 for whatever drops lantern shield. But money goes quick and I need to replenish my gil because silk stacks and beehive stacks can only do so much.
if anyone here is up for anything either leveling or money making (which basically makes of the whole game) don't be afraid to drop me a line.
Main is called Cleese and my mule is Oorgle.
good bye. take care.

First day of farming turned into "Let's spend a few hours looking for two paparii." Man, that crap was so much smoother on Kanzen. I wasted my whole day on genkai. :(
But I got axe up to 106, I can skill up on the easier keys now (like Eldieme, which I need).

ahh... I believe that would be me and me alone on that one >>
I'll be sure to see if I can catch ya on sometime, for some farming... as it's considerably funner when doing it in groups. you'll have to catch me on a really good day if you want me to camp any NM's with you tho... I hate camping those buggers /sigh

Well finally got to lvl 51 on my Pld on Titan. Got G1 done, and got quests for AF hands, and feet, and G2. Mostly I have just been spending my time in Quifim killing things because its sort of therapy/revenge thing

I hit lvl 75 back in November of 2004, and I had no disire to go through all that crap again.
lvl75 rdm 37blm 37thf 22nin 20war 7smn
I've barely played it in the last 2 months, I got bored of seeing my camps being camped, nm's being taken, and overall just wasting my life playing ffxi.
I still play, just about 1/10 as much as I used to. Only thing I still plan to do is get drk to 37 for chainspell+stun, nin up to 37, get my joyeuse that seems elusive but I probably won't cause I do'nt care that much about it.
Relic armor would be nice, so far I only have my relic gloves. Dynamis trip starts in about 6 hrs from the time as I type this messege.
I only keep playing ffxi cuase I have made good friends and like to stay in contact with them. If they all left, I would leave in a heartbeat, but nuuuu they stayed, so I'm still on :P

Yeah, that is the hardest part of leaving any mmorpg... when you meet some cool people and have to say goodbye. I have not "logged in" FFXI for about 2 months now and I don't miss the game, but I miss some of these people. I still write them e-mails and stuff to see how they are doing. I used to be an FFXI otaku... but I needed to focus on my real life. My account is still active and I am not sure what to do... I have like 15 million GIL, my thief is 69, Ranger 71, Beastmaster 65, Dark Knight is 60, Red Mage is 54, and others below 50. It's a good character and if i continue I can easily hit 75 on three or 4 jobs. But things are different in Vanadiel now and I have other important things to focus on so... I am leaving my account active until I decide what to do. But for now I am on a vacation. -_-; Good game though, but need true commitment to be on top.

true commitment or a real disregard for RL, I'd say...
I've looked at quests and gil needed for top armor and what not, and it, really, just makes me sick. I keep playing myself because, well, I have nothing else to do and I've a god group of friends and don't really want to leave them. I may have no real choice in a few weeks tho. ^^;;

I play a Mithra SMN by the name of 'Uragirimono' on the Bismarck server and am currently lvl 48, with 1k tnl. I expect to at least hit fifty tomorrow.
My gil count is roughly 1.2mil on a mule, and about 300k on my main character. I have Genkai 1+2 done as well.
I have several questions:
1) Approaching 50, I was asked if I wanted/needed Mission 5-1, and 5-2. I said yes, and am now scheduled to do them on April 22nd in a LS on Bismarck. My question/s/ on this are: What use will I have as a smn in these missions? I know I'll probably need some sort of food((never needed any before; but this is a boss, so I expect to buy something)) so what kind? Yag drinks? Would I do more for the PT going as my brd, which is currently level 53? Keep in mind I sold everything on my brd, and it's a pain in the *** to set the macros again, then test them to see them work. Know i'll have to practice also because i've been gone for half a year in the game.
2) Approaching 51, I am a loss for what to buy. I have my Liliths Rod for when I want to farm things((there is aways a mage-type mob in the zones I farm, and usually one of my targets; so this was a good 20k purchase before I left. It's now 70k... glad I kept it)). I've heard the staffs aren't necessary right away, unless you get the +1 versions? It's doubtful i'll get more than 4. Dark Staff of course; Light Staff... I dunno. I'm looking more in the direction of The Fire Staff because I love the way Ifrit looks, and the Water Staff because Leviathan is always, ALWAYS faithful in his Tail Whip. Good damage on everything. I love him. What should my staffs; minus Dark, be?
3) Close to 50 also, and my AF set, i've heard the arguement that the Austere vs AF is purely whether you like looking like a hobo... i've heard both arguements, and that's what i've gotten out of them. They both are nice; and I don't want my Mithra looking like a hobo; Keep in mind, I can't afford the Austere((more than 2 pieces on my server...)) and the staffs. Please keep that in mind when you answer this one.
Note: I absolutely love seeing the Evokers Horn on Mithra... and I love the AF set and how it looks on them.
4) At what level can I solo my AF1? No one wants to do any AF with me because they are terrified of the "Cloister" areas. I walked to the Cloister of Tremors myself; and it's not hard. It's TOO EASY... why do people complain about getting to THAT one, of all of them?
5) Can you invite me? Invites are ****ing slow as a smn... ;-;

^ Hi Alexei
1) 5-1 is the skeletons NMs I believe. 5~6 skeletons at once but if you beat the main one, mission complete. This is easy if people know what they are doing. If your BRD's song skill is maxed than you might successfully pull off your horde lullaby. But the best way might be to let the Paladin get hate from all the enemy first, and take it from there. Paladin with Invincible will help alot. If you go as a SMN, I think you should eat some MP+ pies, or some other food. As a BRD you probably might want to do the same since you might be expected to help heal. 5-2 is easier than 5-1 IMO. I have seen a group of 3 or 4 people take on the Shadow Lord. Since there is no level cap bring high levels and it will be a sinch. Remember the Shadow Lord was the last boss before the expansion; meaning the highest level was 50. So if yo bring 3+ lvl 60's it should be no problem.
2) The most useful is the Dark Staff ofcourse, +10 MP while resting is simply amazing. As a mage it's good to have all the elemental staves but not a necessity. If I remember correctly there is a new summoners staff LVL 50 or 51 for sale in the AH. I forget what the stats are but it's a SMN only and gives very good stats.
3) Most SMN I know have used the AF for LVL 50~60 with one or two Austeure equipment. I tend to lean towards stats more than appearance when it comes to PT. When farming I care about my appearancem though. I hate wearing subligar but some of them are too awesome to pass. Mithra don't look too bad in anything so that shouldn't be a problem.
4) Yes, it is easy to get there. I think they are too lazy...
5) I would invite a SMN, especially a BRD in a heartbeat. Too bad I am not in Bismark. :(

Well i'll prolly go all out on the +1 food items anyway. I dun wanna be the reason we die... haha

You don't mean the Himmel Stock at 41 do you? +63 MP, and +3 seconds to the BP timer? I have that, and I love it. :D

I was thinking getting the piece with the -1 perpetuation cost... but for 500k, I don't keep my smns out long enough yet to care about that extra mp every second... I might pass on the hobo gear; for now at least.
4) Yes, it is easy to get there. I think they are too lazy...
This is from some of the same people whom I helped get their AF1 btw. No names going out, but if you're here you know who you are. <_<

Not to mention we chained alot... we had a BLM 47 too, but we chained ALOT faster and killed everything faster without the BLM for some reason.
Rumble Crawlers, Helm Beetles, Mushushus.... we killed everything so fast, and never came close to death; as opposed to with 6 people including a BLM and coming close to death sometimes with long battles.
How odd... I love, love, LOVE Rolling Thunder. :D
The two PT's I was in today, where killings things too fast for me to use Earthen Ward often with others. I had to pick: Buff Defense, or Buff Offense.
Since Earthen Ward didn't do anything for anyone because the tanks knew how to keep the hate((rare...)) I just went with offensive BP's and helped cure.
Only had 3 deaths today:
1 was because of a dropped bomb doing 454 damage to our RDM Taru. God knows they don't have much HP; he had about 500 btw. So it was overkill...
2 Was because the PLDs sneak dropped just as he got to the Rumble Crawlers and two aggroed onto him. The WHM died, and then the PLD died literally 1 second before the final Crawler died... ;-;
Note: Since the BLM was gone, I was working overtime... haha, and I think I know how SMNs do their job on the way of the offensive SMN now. However; God knows even with a WHM, 4 of my Cure III's in a row saved our PLD a couple times. I would definately NOT go /blm at any point in my smn career. Especially not now that I'll be getting Raise in just one level. If I can use my sub to further my parties advance, while doing my main well; then so help me god I will use it to the fullest possible extent.

I truly hate Crawler's Nest. It's crowded, everything aggro and link. At 47~50 I prefer going to Quicksand Caves since it's safer, but again, always crowded but at least finding a camp is easier and safer too since you can zone.
I'm glad that you found some good PT's today. :) I might log in to play with craft maybe. Or kill a few NM's just for fun.

I probably won't be so lucky next time... haha
Maybe 500-1k XP an hour... stupid pts...
Well, we had a debate on going to Quicksand Caves but everyone settled on: "I'm lazy so let's just go to the Nest... haha"
We where all in Lower Jeuno, so yeah. I think I remember hearing someone say they didn't have the Altep Gate crystal, but I might be mistaken.
These parties I found while tyring to get a Cathedral Tapestry; Both parties asked me to join just before I entered Yughott Grotto to molest the Orcs until they gave one up. Strange because both /tells hit me right as I passed the same tree in Ghelsba... oO;
-----
On a lighter note: I have 2 Coffer Keys I do not need, and wonder if they are worth trying for the coffers: Crawlers Nest, and Boyadha Tree.
Dare I camp the coffers for what awaits me inside, or just toss them now since SMN doesn't need them?

Both Crawler's and Boyada hold the map for the first timer, I think.. I know it's a map for Boyada if it's your first time.. and cash after 8k~10k. The map for Crawler's is obtained by the Clay Stone quest in Selbina but I think you can also get it by opening the coffer. The only key worth holding now is for the treasure chest in... oh crap it has been too long.... Fei' Yin? It gives you the Life belt. Castle Oztroja coffer used to have the astral ring but you know what happened. I used to make so much cash doing that with my thief. I would just take a quick look at both of those places to see if the coffer's up. Boyada is too easy to find the chest. But Crawler's is a little tricky since it can pop towards the end of the nest. So I guess if you are bored I would keep the key for cash/map.

Nest map is only through the clay quest. :(
I hate nest just because it's ugly, and usually crowded. I'm not really worried about links (I fear an ant link more than I fear a crawler or fly link). Ants are just a pain because it's hard to find a pick up mage who is intelligent enough to stay out of aoe silence range. Or a whm that actually has silena and is on top of using it on the utsusemi tank. Bastards.
I finally got whm to 25 after getting war to 50. I farmed up all my gear, so Miyuki is fairly well equipped for her level. Now I just need to finish AF2, start working on keys, AF3, level to 55, and get axe skill up for Rampage!

I actually finished that Selbina Clay quest a few weeks ago, lol. But anyway, I'm now leveling my subs for my RDM now that I've maxed out experience points +3k limit points. Current subs include 38WHM, 25BLM, 1DRK, 1NIN...still got quite a bit to go. BTW, soloing really is fun for RDM endgame even though I don't have NIN leveled yet. I can easily skillup my parrying/shield skills by soloing the coffer mobs in Castle Oztroja (Yagudo Flagellents usually).

^3+2+1 I know all of the good leveling spots by heart, so I don't see myself finishing that Selbina Clay quest anytime soon...
Stupid server maintenence. I'm still 48 because people on Bismark are morons who don't know the greatness that is SMN at my level. I watched the same WHM48/BST4 get THREE parties before I even got a single invite. I also saw a Galka MNK48/WAR24 get a PT before me. Pissed me off so much I just had to call it quits.
I'll try tomorrow in the afternoon. If I don't ta least; at LEAST hit 50; i'm shattering my FFXI disc into a million pieces and being done with it. I'll then actually put some play time in WOW and EQ2 like I should've done today. I mean, I bought them and haven't played them much.
FFXI gets one more chance to please me. My goal is 50 by the 22nd; but I want 50 by tomorrow afternoon. If I don't get it... i'm going to burn a hole in everything I have with the FF name on it with my soldering iron.
BTW, I have 1k tnl to 49, so one level in one party at these levels isn't much to ask is it? No? Good. Let's see whether or not the incompetant people invite me or not. I guess i'll just have to make those terrible parties something special... I don't want to quit this game until I obtain Fenrir with my SMN. I stopped with Bar when I thought to myself: "This is no different than leeching it off of a higher level. Regardless of if I can get to 70 in the next two months or not, it wouldn't be my actual SMN that does it. It would be my bard; Fenrir would just be handed over to me in the blink of an eye."
I don't want that. I want to get Fenrir with my SMN, which means enduring everything from now at 48, to 65-70ish when I can start to ask around for assistance on that fight. I want to see the damage output a SMN is capable of in my own eyes; I want to see why we can do well in SMNx5+RDMx1 parties once we start to get our elemental staffs and some decent damage BP's. I want to see all of the new zones including promyvion with my SMN. ((Haven't done them yet. I want to at least step into one of the new zones on my smn in AF.))
Maybe I DO role play... I feel like i'm on a "pilgrimage" to become a true summoner; as opposed to taking BRD to 75 and getting everything with it; except of course for the AF pieces in the coffers which need SMN main. I want to do it all AS SMN. Read the end for my final, true goal as SMN.
--------------------
I bought the Light and Dark Staffs for 170k, and 180k on Bismark. I don't see myself purchasing the Austere Robe anytime soon... even though I wanted it.
Maybe instead i'll just use my couple million gil to pay some LS to get me Carby Mitts. I don't care if it's leeching, I want SOMETHING to call my own in this world. Something that only SMNs can use... somehting r/ex... I look like a friggin WHM atm with my equips:
Weapon: Warp Cudgel and Trick Staff II; for the Warps in case I forget my Insta Warp.
Range: No Morion Tahtlum. I have 746 MP... like 3 more is going to help me? :P
Body: Seers Tunic
Hands: Savage Gauntlets
Earring1: That RARE earring with +5 mp. Forgot the name.
Earring2: I think a Black Earring with +4 mp.
Ring1: Electrum Ring
Ring2: Electrum Ring
Back: Auora Mantle
Legs: Savage Seperates
Feet: Seers Pumps
Waist: Adepts Rope; ((Soon to be Powerful Rope whenever I decide to buy it; with +20 hp/mp))
^I look like a friggin WHM with those equips in person. At 52... i'll get my Evokers Pigaches... and... and... oh god I can't tell you how happy that will make me feel when I get them.
The only thing that distinguishes me as a SMN is the /sea all Uragirimono tag, /c Uragirimono tag while i'm not /anon, or actually seeing that yes in fact that IS a Himmel Stock, and not a gimpy Holly Staff. <_<;
Soon i'll have my SMN's pants((52))... and that alone will make me so happy... i'll actually be distinguishable as a SMN and not a whm or blm. ;-;
--------------------
I want to fight valiantly against every HNM in the game solo and then die fighting side-by-side Fenrir in literally seconds. My goal is to suicide on every monster that requires a Full Alliance; where applicapable.
I know it sounds retarded... but i've had this goal when I first started FFXI. I am now safely half-way to this goal now. ((although, I changed it from dying with Carbuncle to with Fenrir, because i'd want to do this task at lvl 70ish, and in style to the parties that are upset b/c I claimed something first...))

Poor Alexei..
I found it better to create my own PT instead of waiting. It truly does help if you speak and know Japanese. I invite a SMN but it really depends on which jobs are available when I create a PT. I definetly prefer NIN, THF, RNG, WHM, BRD, BLM, at 49~51ish. If a BRD is not available a SMN or a RDM wil do fine. Unfortunately sometimes not many people are unavailable.
You shouldn't have to pay to receive help.... especially from your own LS. -_-; Geez, you should move to Alexander... I will invite you to a LS where everybody will help each other for free. I know a bunch of cool people who will help no charge... Getting help to get Fenrir is a different story since everybody has to have access to fight Fenrir, plus, you need 70+. And also getting help for Hakutaku and such will take time but for Carby Mitts it shouldn't be too hard.
Any MMORPG is about patience... a lot of patience... And you will get to 70+ one day but don't worry too much about how fast you get there.
Alexei
April 14th, 2005, 03:26 PM
^Well, in my absence my LS has pretty much sky rocketed into Dynamis-faring realms, with me being only 53brd, and 48smn... heh. I can't, and will not ask them for the help. It's just a matter of pride... i'm pretty sure I could've done something to help make their time more enjoyable a little had I not left for so long, but oh well. I Can't ask them. It's not my character to do such a thing.
I'd like to hit 70 before I turn 90 though... ;-;
At this point, i'm even considering paying to have Carby Mitts, the Primes, and Fenrir given to me.
How can I enjoy this job if no one wants me without Fenrir? And I kid you not; people ask. People who usually are party leaders; or in a party already. I'm sick of it... It wouldn't be a problem either; I have fame for the Primes and can easily afford the 1-2 million a party of 75ish SMNs to take down Fenrir with Spinning Dive for me. The only problem is... finding them on at the same time I am on; which is another problem for me.
Who the hell is on in the morning times? No one. That's who!
I wouldn't care about any rumors behind my back for leeching... I really wouldn't... I just want to ****ing catch up to some people who seemingly blow by me in level! ARGH!
NOTE: I thought people talked about their better team members? I always thought: "If you leave a lasting impression and really impress people, you'll get the fame among the player community to be taken up quickly."
I carry a note better than Elvaan and Tarutaru BRDs.
I cure a helluva lot better than Hume WHMs.
I hardly ever got resisted on my nukes while leveling BLM.
I never refused to pull, and almost always got hate as a THF/RNG.
I made every DD around my PT in Valkurm look bad as a DRK/SMN; not lacking provoke wasn't a problem. I hardly ever relinquished hate with my damage... lol
I'm pretty sure I would make a better RDM than most rdm's i've seen out here also. So... with all the props i've gotten; with all the cheers and comments I get from random passer-bys; with all the parties I, and I alone am responsible for keeping alive((back up healers... bah)); and all of the times i've taken the deaths for the PT to keep them all alive... is it all for nothing?
Does nothing matter in this game anymore unless you put a Gil amount payable onto it, or have the final Summon in the game?! Do I try too hard while i'm in a PT to make it the bets it can? What am I doing wrong? There has to be something I don't have... what is it? I'd really like to know. Is it gil? I can get more. Is it +1 Items? Despite the fact i've tried some and didn't see much of a difference, I can buy an entire +1 set of equips again. Is it not having the Purple Puppy?
By god if this is the case, then I will leech everything REQUIRED for a SMN to get invites; Carbuncle Mittens, Fenrir, +1 Staffs((technically camping NM's is leeching...)), and the +1 Penance Armor. If that is what it will take for me to enjoy my character, and my game, then so be it.
...the only problem is finding people to be on when I am. <_<

^ yeah, playing at the right time is very important. I noticed that when I would play in the morning... there is not many people on. But when I play from 9pm PST to 7am PST.. alot of JP is on, which I think is a positive thing for me. I hate to say it but the JP PT is more likely to stick longer and get better exp compared to NA players. It all depends on how everyones performance though.
Yeah, I hate asking for help due to my pride but FFXI relies heavily on getting help. So it's a I'll scratch your back, you scratch mine thing.
Just hang in there. FFXI is an awesome game that will test your patience. Geez, I really feel like going back to this game...

I've always had longer NA parties than JP parties. But that's because NA won't think twice to replace someone. JP generally find it rude to replace people, so if one person decides to leave, everyone treks back to Jeuno and starts over again.
Also have a pretty even split on party origin and performance. It seems more reliant on the party leader and the jobs available than it does anything else.
As for summoner, as a player, you might be good, but a summoner hardly offers anything to a pt. A summoner is a last ditch effort for a mage. You don't offer the same security of a white mage (ie no raise yet, and when you finally get it, whms soon get raise2), you don't offer the utility of a red mage or bard, and you don't offer the full damage potential of a black mage. You have a ton of MP, and can get the job done, but it's not "summoner is amazing at x task," it's, "summoner is okay at doing anything we can't find someone better for." But then you throw in Fenrir, and all of a sudden melee and ninja love you for Ecliptic Howl and Lunar Cry.
Unfortunately, you picked a job that's overlooked because it's shining points have little actual group utility.
The only other truely useful ability I'll give you outside of Fenrir(coming from a ninja) is stoneskin, but unless all the summoners I've grouped with since ~55 have terrible summoning skill, even stoneskin becomes obsolete. One hit will take all of stoneskin away and still damage me. Arial Armor isn't anything spectacular, even when I've been leveling other jobs. The only real utility that it has is if your group sucks at hate management.
Not to say that summoner is a bad job... it's just the dragoon of mages. There are better options. I played dragoon to 60, and I'm playing warrior now. It's a matter of determination to succeed at what you enjoy. You'll get there.

Yeah, Fenrir is important but I have PTed with a bunch of good SMN out there without. And personally their skill contribute more than a WHM who does not have any skill (you would think that playing a WHM is simple... but people actually suck at it.) A good SMN will back up heal, stoneskin, aerial armor (nice, if your tank is a PAL), protectra, etc. SMN is as good as a WHM during 59~61 when chaining the hell out of the raptors/bird. Yeah, I was one of those people who used to say "get Fenrir you are a SMN..." but I gave people a chance anyway. And one day I invited the same SMN I used to know without Fenrir and he goes "guess what? ... " and he summons Fenrir! I was so proud of him. But the point is I invited that SMN because he was a good player, he helped so much and proved himself that he is worthy without Fenrir. I prefer players with skill rather than players without skill and with Fenrir. You just never know until you give people a chance. But I would invite Alexei in a heartbeat. Though, I think the BRD is the better choice. ;)

Wow Alexei! It's nice to see someone who loves their job. I hope you do get the purple puppy and all the equipment you need. Just hang in there because SMNs truly shine endgame where they have the most versatility and have their most powerful spells. Not to mention, they also become one of the best soloers in the game. They could replace more than just the WHM, especially the BLM and even a melee slot. You really only lose Raise 2/3 and Regen III, but then you are adding great damage in addition to your avatar buffs. Protect IV/Shell IV can be given by the RDM or PLD unless you're in a NIN+BRD setup.
One of the best parties I've ever had was a 71-73 party in Ro-Maeve with following setup: NIN/RNG/RNG/BLM/SMN (leader)/RDM (me). The SMN and I took care of the healing and at the same time, the SMN was able to use his buffs and Blood pacts often to do damage rivaling the BLM. He was amazing and was just as busy casting as a RDM. We constantly got chain 5 with a few 6's in there. It was clear that if we had a "typical" setup with a WHM replacing him, we wouldn't have been nearly as fast. This is situational, of course, but I was impressed with the SMN job at that point on.
Michael
April 15th, 2005, 07:08 AM
The reason smn don't get invited much for healing though is while they could do just as well if not better than a whm, they don't offer the same security if someone happens to die. Most people would like to play it safe and still build a party that pulls amazing experience than build a party that does slightly better at the risk of losing more xp.
SMN does get impressive after 70 when attack blood pacts are actually worth using... but then that's the last stretch of the game, you still have to make it to 70 playing healer. =p
When I was leveling ninja ~40-55 or so, I had a smn from my linkshell I always picked up, just because he was a friend and I knew he could do the job. That's the problem with summoner though, pick ups aren't going to work as well as any other mage class, unless you know someone who can get you in. I hated leveling ninja up until around 40, because people were stupid enough to invite me to a party where there was already a paladin, or invite a summoner when we already had a white mage, or vice-versa.

Anyway, I've been having fun on BST, and soloing THF to cap Marksmanship. BST hit 30, MM is at 130ish now. I've also farmed/mined off and on to hit .5 Mil, and since I don't want to risk delevelling BST til after this next LS run at Promys, I'm just gonna hardcore craft, mine, and quest. Figure I can finish my first mil in cold hard cash over this weekend, and buy my rings. Farm some over the next week, all that jazz.

My SMN skill isn't capped by any means, and my stoneskin takes about 3 hits to die down. ((depending on those criticals and double hits))
...although, it was last capped at 44. So it's pretty freakng close... haha
I concede defeat: I used a bot overnight to raise my SMN skill((before I took my leave of absence from the game)) because I was not allowed to summon in my parties at that time. Sue me. It's not affecting me much now anyway... I still get interupted when I get hit. <_<
^1 Well... tell me the same thing when you are a level 40 SMN, and a friend of yours starts a completely new job. She hits 30 before you even get half-way to 42. She then hits 50 before you're 43. She's now level 71 in yet another job now... /sigh
Mocking me? Yes indeed. Although I still say she wouldn't have gotten past me so fast if she didn't have that Static party of hers. .v.

I repeat; In less then the time that it took me to go 33% through the ENTIRE standard exp curve, people on this board went through the whole thing. Granted, I do a hella more then exp in this game, but I'm pretty sure JOJO has as well. A few exceptional people I partied with in the dunes on Thief hit 75 when I hit 50. Probably two active posters here deserve the title Cantakerous Curmudgeon more then me; Lunay and Micheal. Whoever doesn't get Cantankerous Curmudgeon gets Crazy old Coot. I've honestly never maxed out in an mmorg, so uh, it's not something I've ever worried about. I'm always trying new classes and new ways of playing, I tend to forget that I'm so close to getting there on another job.
I've been waiting for a person in my linkshell to catch up so he can xp with my ninja. It's been tempting to level it some more, I just needed money. Warrior is taking a break until this new experience thing is implimented. No point in finishing my level to 51 when they're about to make it easier. Especially when I've got subs I could be leveling that won't be affected at all.
Alexei, your stoneskin might be working now, but it does taper off. Lv64 nin and stoneskin lasts one single hit from a squishy crawler. :( With their double attack rate, I could use that stoneskin here and there. Still, it's just a matter of playing what you enjoy. I mean christ, I was once a dragoon. :(

Dispel is a LUXURY, not a need. For example, I was in a PT with 5 people levels 49-53, and we where chaining Robber Crabs easily w/o Dispel. Easily.
Dispel wasn't needed b/c Ramuh's Rolling Thunder was adding 5-10 damage on every hit by each member, whether they hit for 0 or a number. Not no mention Ramuh was meleeing pretty well... he seemed to be immune to the Crabs' high defense.
Oh well, finally hit 53, so /hooray
If not for a level 75/37 DRK/NIN zoning Guivre onto my PT, then I coulda probably been half way to 54 too, instead of 300 on the level. lol
That was funny though... Guivre came back and singled out our Dragoon to attack.
...then some THF zoned EVERYTHING in Kuftal Tunnel. Cactuars, Spiders, Crabs, and i'm pretty sure if Worms could chase you she'd have trained them also. oO
But Guivre was the biggest problem... heh
For the record, our party ended as:
rdm50(hume)
drg52(elvaan)
thf52(hume)
blm50(taru)
smn53(me)
nin52(taru)

Alexei, you're taking this as a personal offense. Don't. Short of specific counters to specific forms of self buffs, Dispel is not a luxury. Robber Crabs I can see beating without Dispel; Acid Bolts can counter the Def Boost well enough, so your BLM is just going to have to put up with lowerred numbers. Rolling Thunder works well in THAT situation; Levelling on mobs weak to Thunder, and with 2 meleers who had quick hits. If you replaced the THF with a DRK, I guarantee you that Rolling Thunder wouldn't be near as useful. Additionally, were you not levelling on crabs, you would have been resisted quite a bit.
But you HAD Dispel, so it's not an issue. If you do not have a WAR with G.Axe willing to Shield Break, or (ironically) Fenrir's Acc Buff or his Eva Debuff, Beetles are not an option without Dispel. Rhino Guard is EVA up, not a Def boost, so there is no simple counter. Sure, a few weapons have an Eva Down effect, but not only are they far and few between, but the proc rates are low.
Dispel is not really a luxury insomuch that every Bard and Red Mage needs to be picking it up, and use it right as he levels. Vermillion Cloak, now that's a luxury. If you fight things with no self-buffs (Among others, Bats and Flies), you can safely ignore its existence. However, the most popular levelling mobs are frequently ones with Self Buffs because... surprise, you can dispel them, thus stripping away a significant portion of their defense. Dispel even comes in handy on Beastmen who can't buff themselves, because odds are, one of their companions can, and will.

Forgive me, i'm usually running on steam from how frustrating this game is w/o Fenrir. I wasn't allowed into a Promyvion run b/c I didn't have him today((wtf? promyvion?! What the hell use does he have in this crowded zones?))
Funny thing is I was there again this morning in a setup that I forgot b/c it wasn't worth bragging about, and on the final mob the mnk((with RSE gloves, not Ochiudes Kote)) used his 2hr and hit for nothing but 0's. Ramuhs Rolling Thunder wase nice however and added 5-10 damage each hit he made... lmao that crab didn't know what hit it.
I also bursted Diamond Dust for 1100 damage, and I hit a nearby Sand Lizzy for 880... thank god aggro is reset from AoE's by a smn when you release them. <_<;
But you HAD Dispel, so it's not an issue. If you do not have a WAR with G.Axe willing to Shield Break, or (ironically) Fenrir's Acc Buff or his Eva Debuff, Beetles are not an option without Dispel. We had Dispel yes, but the frequency with which it was used was laughable. We got it maybe 20% of the time. Rest of the time went with Hasting the nin, refreshing me, sticking enfeebles and what not. Dispel wasn't used often enough to make it worth it in thet set up. Not that i'm complaining... the PT was freaking awesome!

Pretty simple answer to that, actually; If the boss were to spawn light, you'd be screwed.
Although, you should feel happy; Any group that just auto invites SMNs and RNGs and doesn't farm for anima is probably clueless and will lose (For reference; SMNs are awesome on the boss. But every pickup I've seen that doesn't get anima just sorta dies.).
Funny thing is I was there again this morning in a setup that I forgot b/c it wasn't worth bragging about, and on the final mob the mnk((with RSE gloves, not Ochiudes Kote)) used his 2hr and hit for nothing but 0's. Um, my normal damage is better then 5-10 a hit, and MNK per hit damage is usually lots better then a THF's. Compared to his normal 2 hour, that was a really, really, really crappy use. And for reference, you don't HAVE to release your avatar. Lunay can confirm, but I promise you, if your pet AoEs and hits other, non-engaged mobs, no hate is on you, at all. Course, that runs MP, but it won't last too long.
For reference, what you're feeling is what happens to a DD who doesn't have <insert uber gear here>. Problem is, most DD at least have the means to get the gear. Then again, said means usually involve getting a bunch of cash. You can hire help. Just like I can buy my gear.
Edit: Also, you can form your own parties. Anyone on their main will, in all likelihood, NOT know what Fenrir does.

People don't mind the sub job so much as the fact I'm missing a lot of spells. Cure IV Protect III Shell II Haste Dispel (I hate that spell -_-). I was gonna farm since I need spells but then my connection is dead. I hope I can get on soon. Ah my first BCNM was funny too. Rng shot the wrong Mandragora. We all get mobbed. Brd died first. Then everyone else. Rng got out tho lol. I thought he would get hit first. -_-;
This reminds me of a story when I was leveling my Ranger. When my Ranger was a lvl 50 something and we were leveling in Crawler's Nest. I had the perfect PT setup (I forgot what the setup was.) Anyway, we were leveling off the beetles, and I asked the Red Mage "why aren't you using dispel?". The Red Mage replied "because I don't have it yet". And I'm like "............" I said "how can you be a Red Mage at this level and not have dispel?". He said "sorry, I need to go farm." And I said "Ok, go farm now...." And he said "sorry, guys" and left. The moral of this story is that every little thing is important. The spells, the right sub leveled, right equipment, etc.

And that is why I always state that I don't have Dispel and such ^^. What Lv are Exorays? We were fighting them around 46-48. Japanese pt. I don't even know why they invited me. I barely did anything -_-; . It was fun tho.

I had my first Dynamis (Bastok) last week. It was really fun and very intimidating when I first entered. At the time, our intention was only to farm and not win it since we needed more BLMs for that. I did see the Duelist Gloves drop, but I didn't win the lot.
I also finished leveling my BLM at 37 as my second sub for my RDM. Now I'm going to work on DRK sub next, followed by NIN. It'd be so nice to play melee again. :)

Guru, vs. Keeper of Halidom (http://ffxi.allakhazam.com/db/bestiary.html?fmob=593)
Round 1: As I cursed myself for not bringing my Blind Bolts, I utsud up, and claimed him with an Acid bolt as a Samurai used Third Eye and Meditate. It was going.. REALLY slow for a while. Took a few hits, but damned if those bloody bolts didn't regen it fast. Eventually, he used Blank Gaze on me, the Goob Paralysis move. Unlike most gazes, it's really fast. Fast enough that I can't turn around to dodge it. After about 4-5 rounds of pure paralysis, I ran like hell and got knocked down to 60 HP. When Paralysis wore, I re-utsud, found a Gobbie, and drained up to full, then went back for
Round 2: This went similar for a while, but he got an Antiphase (silence) in, and I got stuck without shadows for a Beatdown. Hot DAMN do those hurt. Managed to put my shadows up and restore my HP. Eventually, Blank Gaze and I ran again, but with the knowledge that a 70 BLM/WHM LS mate was coming.
Round 3: I claimed it after draining an Ogre Fly, and just as it Paralyzed me again, the BLM showed up and Paralynad me. Turned back around and started fighting. She debuffed it to the point where it couldn't really scratch me; Blind/Slow/Paralyze, then Rasp, Frost, and Drown. No real drop, but damned if it wasn't fun.

I finished Promyvs. Aside from the mishaps getting up to the spire in Holla (gg healing the ranger at 150-200hp while your tank is at 6hp), they were all excessively easy.
But I guess that's what happens when either a) you know what you're working with. (I was the only 2hr in Mea, Dem had 2x mighty strikes and an EES, Holla had 2x mighty and an EES), or b) bring enough rangers (holla = 3x rng 2x war/nin 1x whm).

Have no idea if I've said this, but I retired my DRK -- I got so damn tired of making PTs that lasted for under an hour.
SO, I sold most of my equips and am now working on PLD, which, you know, is the total opposite side of the coin. I'm pretty lucky, from 11-14 I got PL'd... took a break for random crap, thenPL'd again to 17, and finished to 20 in normal pt's.
I figure I'll be able to do a LOT more in game as a PLD than as a DRK, since, you know, PLD are more useful than DRK.

We partied for around 2.5 hrs, with small periods of me nearly nodding off on them (remedied that problem tho and made it the rest of the way np). got lvll 22 and 3/5 of the way in before it split. Now comes the time I got honored -- before splitting, one of them told me I was a very good PLD ^^ >>

I'm a married man now.
The FFXI weddings are pretty impressive. They really go all out and it's very formal. They take them seriously. But the Wedding Master was very cool. I even disconnected once during the rehersal and everything was still fine. They ring the wedding bell and the Chateau d'Whatever music changed to the Final Fantasy Prolog theme and stayed that way for most of the wedding until the vows when the music went silent. Then started up again for the closing of the ceremony. It was really amazing, actually. Much more in depth than I expected.
Of corse I also didn't expect to get a wedding date confirmed for two days after I sent the application. Er, I mean after I sent the application from my brother's account.

Horray, been awhile since I got a good party on warrior. But maybe that's just because it's been a few days since I even went for xp party on warrior. Either way, more than half way through 53. Refuse to join xp party until I get my eldieme coffer, then after I get 54, it's farming time for all my gear through 60 save haubergeon. Mm.
Level 55 alone is going to be great. Start subbing nin for rampage... offhand with the +12 attack sword. 2x Spike Earrings. Royal Knight's Chainmail. Royal Knight's Breeches. Royal Guard's Collar. That's +30 attack, not including the +4str from RK gear. That'll be on top of the +9 attack I already have. If I want I can equip my AF gloves for another +4 str. And mithkabobs because I'm too cheap to buy freaking 40k/stack sole sushi. And zerk. And warcry. Man, I can't wait to see my attack full buffed at 55.

Sushi is vastly over-rated. It cuts per hit damage down to a relative nil. Then again, I'm someone who doesn't have Zerk, but then again, you'll have Aggressor, so meh. Either way, I consider it pretty ****** stuff, on the whole. Give me meat dishes like Curry, and I'm happy.
Also, after another bout with Keeper, this time interupted when I ran due to Paralysis, lost claim, and had some bitch RDM steal him at freaking 35ish%, I'm not going farming without Remedies and Echo drops. I'm taking that bitch down solo if(/when) it kills me. Pun intended.

I logged on for a few hours just having fun killing NM's and such and I saw Waraxe Beak. I was using my 70 Thief of course, subbed Ninja. Since I am not taking this game to seriously now I decided to take him on. My health was 75% (I regret it now) and I should have rested full. Being the spotaneous person that I am I quickly utsusemi and SAed and engaged battle. Things were going great until he used dispelga and took away my shadows. :crybaby: I kept my health up by using my bloody bolts, and kept using utsusemi. I was doing good until he got a lucky break by using Dispelga and Stonega IV right away. I got him down to about 1/5 HP, but his Stonega IV killed me in the end. I tried to flee but you just cannot run away from him as he will drag you back to fight him. I know that his drop is crappy (Mansoon Tekko) but it was more about finding out if he is soloable. He is definetly solable if I had some potions, or utsusemi ni.

As if everything else I knew wasn't enough to respect you, simply being bold AND daring enough to try that something worthy of respect. If you don't mind my asking, about how often did you resist Stonega IV? I'm guessing a bunch, since unless my fading memory is wrong, that hit me for 900ish last time.
On the downside, you just reminded me why the odds of me (ever) soloing KA are low, because if memory serves he casts Waterga IV.
Also, Ants suck to EF on, if you're a mage. Carry a metric ton of Echo Drops or bust. My personal performance was horrible due to my idiocy (TA for some aggro placement, THEN SA, you fool!)

Meh, that's cool, neither of us have been there long. So we go on. 3 hours later, still no drop, and another group comes down. Well, when my I had my shadow up most of the time. But when he used dispelga and stonega IV right away, it hit me for like 450~600. He could barely hit me with his normal attack since I had my scorpion harness, emperor, for some nice evasion boost. I was controlling my utsusemi pretty well but when I got hit with stonega IV, I had to make a decision of casting utsusemi first, or bloody bolts to recover HP first. I chose to recover my HP first since it was in the red and about 150HP. His normal attack would hit me for about 60~80DMG and my bloody bolt would recover the same amount 60~80HP. The key is to have utsusemi up when he casts Utsusemi. But he got me a couple of times with stonega IV right after dispelga and that killed me. If I had a healer of some sort with me then it would have been easy. That or utsusemi ni and potions.
KA? is that a hnm? And I agree those ants do suck, especially when they use the silence AoE.

Of course I know King Arthro! I'm just not good with abbreviation, sorry. I would love the Speed Belt are you kidding me? I never see it for sale in the auction anymore. The thing with King Arthro is you have to go through several Knight Crabs before he spawns. And that can be a pretty hard task. I was surprised that I almost soloed Waraxe myself, but it seems that Waraxe is weaker compared to King Arthro and Serket and other HNM. Maybe that explains the crappy drop from Waraxe. Me and my friend have tried to solo Lumber Jack, but we got slaughtered due to all the caveberries (like 8 of them spawn from the Willow mob, along with Lumber Jack) that spawned and 9 mobs were attacking us at the same time. Lumber Jack also uses Stonega IV, I think we would have come close to defeating him if my friend (LVL 70 RDM) had been subbing Ninja. I was using my 71 Ranger with ninja sub. So of course I died first since I got much aggro. Oh, and about Aquarious, my friend solo's him all the time. He has a Thief 75, and he has uber items including some of the arbitration armors.
I love doing BST BCNM runs. :)

Yeah, I figured you knew what he was, but I'm one of those "likes hearing himself speak" types, so I explained anyway <__<
The ones I want to solo are Sozu Rogberry (Pay other people for crap I can get myself? HAH!), KA, Aqua, Serket, and at some point at ~65, Steelfleece or Bloodtear. I honestly don't care about the drops too much (Thief's Knife aside), I just want to do it.
I know Serket can and has been done by 75 THF packing supplies, and Aqua at 70. I just used Aqua as an example because I've seen it hit (someone else), and it's stupidly fast.
And I can't imagine doing a mono-BST run on a 6-man BCNM. I hate the idea of mono-anything runs on a BCNM, honestly, and no matter how much easier it'd be to do it on BST, I wouldn't have as much fun doing it.

If I were to peg any Mono-anything 6 man group as doing it, it'd be BST, if pet spam is at all possible. I'm not denying the power, but I don't think I'd enjoy a BCNM like that. Something like LoZ would be different, since on top of the fact that he'd be hard as hell, it's not a controlled environment like a BCNM. I mean, take Steaming Sprouts for an easy example. You can charm all the mini mandragora, slaughter the boss, then just release Mandies one by one. If I wanted to do a mono BST BCNM.. I'd favor one of the really weird ones, to be honest, like Royal Succession. But yeah, BSTs can be disgusting, especially when they get EM pets. I'm just saying, I'd like to play with other jobs at the same time.

Yesterday was fun. The Final Fantasy XI convention came here. We had a Boss Battle Bash. Only two teams won (Time Bomb and Dark Dragon) and no one had sub jobs >.<. Only reason they beat Time Bomb was because they were samart enough to cast Reraise. We fought Playing Host (?) and it was Pld Whm Blm Drk Rng and Sam (Who didn't know how to enter the battlefield). Since barely anyone won when they drew raffles they gave away the prizes. Some people got 6 Square Enix games. Tarutaru marathon was fun. 35 Tarutaru Whm Lv 1 in this area I've never seen. It was nice and green though. But I think one of the Galkas used as a camera died there and delvled to 74. There were enemies called Fomors there. Yeah. Had to run to this bazaar, buy cure, and cure a Mithra. I'm sure it's fun, but meh, FFXI just doesn't have the proper mechanics for a truely fun PvP. I played Dark Ages of Camelot. Seriously, you better have something absolutely amazing if you want to top Realm vs. Realm. World of WarCraft actually sounds like it may just deliver... whenever they actually do release the battlegrounds. That's one thing that would entice me to put up with leveling in WoW... battlegrounds. Though DAoC is coming around to the RvR mission idea and implementing them as well.

Michael
May 6th, 2005, 06:43 PM
Aelice, you're in a terrible mindset here. :(
It's actually disgustingly typical too. Okay. So bard doesn't have a lot of hit points. So bards don't do a lot of physical damage. Hello. You're a bard. You're singing horde lullaby. You're giving your mages ballad so they can regenerate mp faster. Hm. Last time I checked...that's exactly what bards do. gg enjoying ballista because you're a bard and you get to do bard like things which you had to enjoy in the first place given you've made it to 68. :p
Hiko on the other hand, well, unless he's with a REALLY organised group of people, Hiko is nothing more than a guy with a sword at the bottom of the food chain. He's dwarfed by every damage dealing job save probably thief when it comes to ballista. This is a battle of even matches. Sadly, dragoon has a lot more potential in ballista. Contrary to popular belief, penta isn't that bad on ITs, on EM, I can imagine it being pretty devastating. On top of having 2 instant hit jump attacks. Yeah, Dragoon has potential. But what does Hiko have? Meditate. Wow... once every three minutes (so maybe once per respawn) he can hit someone with a free weaponskill before he gets destroyed by a single one of any other damage dealer in the game. Hiko's job potential lies in being a catalyst, not a lone powerhouse.
Sure, Hiko can do a lot more damage than you, but it doesn't matter. There's no fun in hitting auto attack, even when you can do better damage than a bard.
This is why I don't like the idea of ballista. FFXI is not balanced for PvP, it was just tossed in there because people wanted it. PlayOnline isn't going to start focusing on job balance in PvP, because then they also have to rethink PvE. It's the whole "You can't have your cake and eat it too" thing. DAOC blows PvE, but the Realm vs Realm stuff is amazing.
Aelice

You want some cheese with your whine? :3 It's not a disguting mindset. You guys are burdening yourselves by taking Ballista WAY too damn seriously. Of course it isn't going to be a vital part of the game; it's just a side thing to keep interest in, if people want to take a slice at other players.
I can take the time to buff up and whack at other people, but seeing a group of enemies fall asleep to a horde lullaby is so satisfying. ^^ Hiko just needs to adapt, like EVERYONE does. You think being a RNG in Ballista automatically makes them uber? Not if they're not careful and if they dont take the time to get the Loxley bow, they're easy prey if you know what to do. Hiko can also have fun and do what other SAM do, and just have a duel with a fellow SAM, if he's SO dying to go slash at a foe.

Here's why I drew the line: My match was a level 40 cap. So I can't use Tachi: Jinpu, or Tachi: Yukikaze. That leaves me with Tachi: Enpi as the only WS that will do any damage to people. It did about 80-100 damage. I engaged a Monk who was half dead and I was at full. She hit me with one Raging Fists, it did 400 damage, and at that cap I don't have much more than that.
That, and the fact that everyone, even the mages, on the other team had subbed NIN. I don't have a way to get rid of shadows myself. I need to rely on someone with -ga spells to do it for me.
And it was also everyone on our teams' first time ever trying Ballista, our LS decided to try it out.
Michael is right about how gimped I was in there. At my max level, I have gear that lets me out-damage almost every other Melee DD I party with except Monks. But at the 40 cap I couldn't use any of it. Plus, that gear I have has a lot of negative stats to it that doesn't really matter in an exp party, like -DEF and -Evasion. That would matter in Ballista. If I am to adapt, that means bringing a different job into Ballista.
And it's not that I'm taking it to seriously, its just that I can't really have fun when I'm not of any use in there, and I'm just getting hammered. Sure, you die alot I'm sure, but you're very usefull, that's why you get killed.

Don't be a twit. You're comparing yourself to a Monk. Monks are top notch in Ballista. Counter, Chakra, insane HP, fast hits, and more. The following jobs are bad ones to compare yourself too:
Thief. This isn't arrogance. I don't bring it to 30 caps because I have other options, and they're too disgustingly powerful to stand using when I have other options. Thieves are rediculous to kill. You're EM, and at this point, once I blind it, I can dodge hits from an IT for a good minute, no sweat. Mix in Bloody, Sleep, and Silence Bolts, and we actually have good crowd control (for melee) and good healing. And it might just be I'm not used to such small models, but I think the radius for SA is greatly expanded. Keep in mind, I can use tonko to invis myself, and just run in from there, and at post 50, Hide/SA/WS mid fight. The only real threats to a Thief are MNKs (In that we're on even ground), Ninja (Complete and utter Whiff fest), and BLMs. Problem is BLMs have been nerfed in Ballista (This isn't evident until higher caps, as spell damage is lower then normal, but MP costs are not), so for all the MP they spend, they deal relatively pitiful damage, past 30. Point is, the only thing that has an auto-hit is not only nerfed, but it's also an extremely soft target, so one SA-WS slaughters it. I've only seen Thieves die, and have only died, when I/They were the only targets for a good distance.
Monk: Monks are kings in Ballista. They're not as hard to kill as we are, but they hit so much harder. Your comparison is rubbish, for a simple explanation you yourself gave: You're still using a starter WS, he's using his first big improvement. Either way, MNKs still kick complete *** in Ballista, so comparing to them is stupid.
RNG (At 30 cap): Holy Bolts are broken at 30. That aside, they're pretty fair.
RDM (Not at 30): Once they have Stoneskin/Phalanx, they're pretty damn good. So rediculously hard to take down, and they have access to Sleep/Sleep II, Silence, and all manner of fun toys.
To the RDMs: Dispel does not kill Utsusemi, stop trying =D
Them aside, everything ends up pretty fair. A warning to the pet classes, if you issue an order, then try and quarry or score while they do it, your pet will just come back.
Oh, and in Ballista, Nin sub is king. Unless you're going to sub RNG (I'm being specific: You can land hits with your C+ Archery, assuming it's capped for the relevant level), sub NIN. Only exception is MNKs, who can get away with subbing whatever they damn well please.
Edit: In retrospect, I also fear RDMs as well, as we're on even ground, just like MNKs.
Other Edit: I like using BST most in Ballista, actually. BST is a pretty damn fair class, since a lot of the damage comes from a second HP tank. An HP tank I don't have a lot of control over, and can't immunize against popular crowd control methods.

Raging Fists is 41. He had to have used Combo. ;p
Still though, it doesn't matter what he compares himself to, because that's completely beside the point. The point is ballista isn't fun when all you can do is hit auto attack and end up getting stomped all over. Sorry, but not many find it very entertaining to die time and time again. Even when you're not losing anything, you're also not gaining anything (ie: satisfaction of a kill).
It's not that ballista can't possibly be fun, it's that chances are unless you're on an amazing team or will a very well organised group and not getting zerged, then it's not going to be enjoyable.
The only reason I even got my license on Kanzen is because I want to run around tonko'd and 2hr on an unsuspecting mage. After that I'd probably just leave. Unless for some stupid reason Ballista ends up being a series of single fights, I don't see ninja doing well, because all it'd take is a single monk, or two people to render the ninja helpless. Not like ninja do amazing damage to take down one person before his shadow timers are completely screwed.

Well, if all you make it is running in and auto-attacking, then yeah, I can see not being amused. Keep in mind that to win, you not only need to get kills, you need to get out alive. That means picking targets, knowing who you're going after, and if possible, how you're getting out. It also means balancing your gear setup. If a DD goes in in exp gear, he's going to die. Exp gear means sacrificing everything for damage. You NEED that other "Everything" to live, since these are all EMs.
Oh, and fear the WARs more then the monks, Mike. You can paralyze/blind a monk and hope for the best. A WAR can voke you. Not scared yet? You can't self buff while voked. Fear =D
Also, 3 minutes counts down faster then you'd think. Call Beast is on a 5 minute tiger, and assuming I wasn't just overwhelmed, I could keep a pet out most of/all of the time. Considerring I've had people gun for the tiger (Particularly other pets /cry), and that I've had it exposed to every -ga I was (Except I got potions/cures from any WHMs in the audience), You'll feel the Meditate timer tick by VERY quickly. 48 minutes in a match means 16 Meds, not counting Revitalizers.

Ah. My first Ballista was...HORRIBLE. It was so bad. I wanted to try it and Lv 50 was going on so I joined (Note: I was a 41 Rdm). What was really messed up was that our Pt consisted pof a Pld50 War50 Rdm41 and the other team was Bst50 War50 Blm50 and Thf50. Yeah...I was sleeping during most of itt. Blm kept going for me >.< Then as I sleep s/he binds me and here comes my Ls member War Galka who switched teams just before it begins. lol. Kinda funny. I was fighting the Thf and he was almost dead. Said he'd give me gil if I could kill him. i was at full HP. I died (XD) Score was like 3 to 56 or something. Was fun though. If I can ever get back on I wanna lv to 50, get good armor and my spells, and die again! I saw something intresting once. I saw a Whm and Nin fighting. Neither died for a while. -_-;. I think Ballista is fun. But that's just me. A lot of people don't like dying. I don't mind it. I die every time I lv (Seriously). I think it's just fun to fight others people once in a while. Especially friends. But some people get mad when they lose. Not fun to play with them, but that doesn't usually happen to me (Cept that one time with like 19 people when everyone kept arguing on our team. More fighting amongst ourselves then with the enemy :p).

Thats exactly what we were trying to figure out. It was a 40 cap and that JP MNK was definatly using Raging Fists. I am not making this up and I did not see incorrectly. I know what I got hit with.
And as to why I wa doing a 40 cap? That's what the LS decided on so that all members could participate, some were lower level.

Hmm. I don't know. I think all jobs have there weaknesses. (If any of this sounds stupid it's because I'm just saying what I think. I don't know what changes have been made to Ballista since I havn't been able to get on in a few months) Any melee can be hurt if you Blind/paralyze/slow them. I have yet to see a Smn in Ballista but that's just me. I guess Mages uh. Silence. That works on me :_;. If I were to say a good job for Ballista I'd say Bst. They seem to be really good. I saw a Bst/Brd once in Ballista. Not sure if that's good. But to me, Ballista is just fun. I like to fight with friends. I don't care if I lose. Do Mnks have good Def? Or is it just their high HP? Kinda a stupid question but I was just curious.

He Meritted H2H. Pretty simple, really.
And yes, while classes have weaknesses, most people are simply not in a position to press this. Pure mages, particularly, take hits like complete pansies, and have pitiful eva. SMNs, WHMs, and BLMs are brought down by 33ish% from one SA. I can send a Tiger after WHM or BLM and expect a gate breach, assuming his allies don't save him. If a SMN doesn't have something out, he's the same. Me? Sure, I'm weak to magic on Thief, kinda. But the only class that can actually press this with great efficiency is RDM (WHM and BLM can, theoretically, do good damage, but they drop far too easily), and not because their nukes will hurt too much, but because they can debuff me. One error you're making is assuming your debuffs are faster casting then Utsu, which they probably aren't until AF hat. Thing is.. I'm casting Utsu from the second you're casting your Diaga. If you're not casting Diaga.. well don't expect to debuff me for a while. MNKs deal exceptional DoT (As always), have, with Dodge up, an A rank in evasion (Essentially), Counter, High HP, and High Vit. While Def makes a noticeable difference on EM, High Vit is still a large advantage. Well, MNKs don't really have a weakness either, all things considerred. They make themselves targets though, which counts.

:eww: Wow. I guess your right. Hmmm. Well I can't think of anything to say now. I think Blm are good though. They can annoy me easily. Do you think Bst/Brd works as a combo for Ballista? I saw this once or twice.

Interesting how there's all this Ballista talk going on when I finally have my first ballista (Last night). Honestly, it's the funnest thing I've done in the game in a long, long time.
I did two 50 cap matches (would have done 3, but had to stop for the night), and was on winning side both times.
I used my drk.... and god do ppl hate drk's in ballista it seems. Aside from the fact that I was new, and left myself open for attack often, far as I can tell, the only reason they hated me was Stun, and Souleater/Blood weapon combo (which is a one time in match thing). Nonetheless, despite all the times I died, it was still a blast, and I'm gonna do at least one more 50 cap tonight (it's at like.. 2am lol)
Oh, and let me reitterate.. I was a DRK... with WAR sub... such a blast... XD

there's been a pld in all 3 ballista I've done if remember right. all had nin subbed too I think lol, I can't be sure tho, since I don't check ppl in it often.. just try to find a mage, cast something on it, hope they don't have any shadows, and then get stomped lol

omg I got Fenrir last night... his 2 melee hits((i'm level 56, so he hasn't many)) are freaking awesome on Too Weak Mandys in Windy. They do like 2-300. Ifrit is right behind him with about the same damage, just slightly less.
I can't wait to see how good he is, and why i've lost parties w/o him. I'm going to do some experiments with him when I get on with IT++ mobs.
Oh well... if I accidentily start a quest of some sort and am given a title for starting it((like Tarutaru Murder Suspect)), can I change it back to "Heir of the New Moon" by any NPC? Or is this a title you only get from completing the quest again?
I was shaking so much when we won... I didn't believe it. And, I wasn't a leech actually... I don't know how it happened, but I played a "pivotal" role in the PT. I don't know how I went from 800mp to 200mp on the fight where we won. The PT adamantly believes the buffs I kept up through Lunar Cry helped alot. My Cure III's when the WHM was stuck in the Haste animation after an Eclipse Bite that got through shadows also did something... <.<;
PT setup:
nin (only one tank. He is impossible to gauge. He held hate through a FULL Benediction.)
brd (spammed goddes hymnus and dark carol. Dark carol helped us survive the 2hr, with red double digits...lol)
smn (Spinning Dive for 800 each time? Yes, please.)
whm (Cure V anyone? Benediction anyone?)
drk (this guy was just wrecking Fenrir... he even paid for it a couple times for getting hate. lol, he kicked ***)
me (just doing my little thing of buffing people and curing when necessary)
We broke the record too they said, I didn't notice b/c I was too excited about finally not being kicked from parties... The fight didn't seem like it lasted long when we got out, but boy oh boy it felt like 100 hours in his last 20% HP when he got VERY aggresive. To hell with Lunar Cry, he was using Moonlit Charge, Crescent Fang, and just spamming Eclipse Bite.
Wouldn't ya know it was the last fight where everyone said "OK, let's do it once more. If we don't win, we'll just come back another day."
T_T ohhhhhhhh I love luck! Wait, wtf am I saying? We kicked Fenrirs ***! Luck not-withstanding! We won because of our superior tactics in the last fight!
====================
EDIT the first
====================
Oh yeah, right when we finished and returned to windy and me and the 2 other SMNs in my LS summoned Fenrir for a group photo, a member in our LS was saying that his friend was being raped by Bloodtear Baldurf. (There are more smns, but these two where with me in the Fenrir fight.)
Seeing as he was in Davoi, nobody believe him. Well, after about 5 minutes of telling him to prove it, we finally tele-holla'd and went to J-9. Sure enough, there he was. Bloodtear Baldurf was claimed by a solo BST and Courrier Carrie.
Unfortunately, He didn't die when CC died... he survived with 33% HP when he was able to summon a new CC who quickly got hate.
Oh sad... sad... I wanted to kick his *** for all the times him and mostly his children have molested me while leveling. .v.

EDIT the second

Last sunday, Windurst took the Ronfaure Region from Sandy. LMAO
Well on my server anyway; Bismarck.
I don't know what they did, but every San d'Orian was pissed off in Jeuno when they found out. Every ship to Windy was full of Sandy sympathizers that day... I'll garauntee you that Windy will STILL have Ronfaure and their own nation still. Sandy sympathizers are lazy. <.<

Actually, I have a few ideas as to how they took Ronfaure. I discussed doing the same with my EF LS. Essentially, a bunch of people made Windy mules and took them to Sandy, and brought their Sandy mules out. Signet on the whole Kit n' Kaboodle, and start suiciding your Sandy mules. Also, trading equipment to the Ronfaure guard manager helped as well.
Grats on Fenrir, by the way. Now all you need is your Carby mitts =D

Eh, the suicide thing doesn't work anymore. Well, unless they leveled their mules specifically to die and delevel them and repeat the process. Patched a looooooong time ago so that players under (10?) don't negatively effect conquest.
So I randomly went back to ninja on a whim, got 66, blade:ten (and god does it suck), and uh, sold some of my warrior stuff. Well, 3 things, walkure's mask and my snipers. 1.2 million, bought my new +1 katanas for 66 and waiting for an evasion torque to be put on the market. There was one, but it was for more than 450k, when the history is 400k with a 430k that sticks out randomly. Checked again about an hour ago and sure enough the guy's evasion torque expired. That's right, that's what you get. Greedy little bastards only lose ~10k gil in AH fees because they have to put the item up again and not be so greedy!
Oh, grats on Fenrir. He's fun stuff. Attacks are so so, but uh, bps on a 1m timer generally means he's not attacking. If anything he's acc/eva up(or down) or the crazy *** all stats up thing.
I had a pt with a smn/blm the other day on warrior. There's a good reason why I don't make pts and I refuse to take leadership when the leader leaves.

I mean I like the game and all, but all I've done this evening is wait 2 hours for a stupid party that got disbanded 30 mins later, because we got killed by some goblin in Valkurm Dunes...
Arggghh...this game is sooo frustrating...if only we could start with BST from the beginning...what LVL are we supposed to be to be able to change jobs to BST?

When you hit 30 and do the corresponding quests that will unlock a specific job. I personally love BST but make sure you lvl your white mage so you can use it as a sub with BST. BST quest is so easy to unlock so no problem there. I personally like to charm the Kraken type mob near the flower point in Qufim and go around the area. Alot of people think I'm out there with my Kraken pet thinking I will start PKing people. LOL It's funny.

^ PK = Player Kill
Yes, it will take a long time... When you hit 18 you will get a sub so you will be required to level that as well. I would level warrior if I were you... since you will want to use Ninja as a sub... and when you level you Ninja you will be expected to use a war sub. It all depends on which job you want to raise as a main. So if you want to be a tank most likely a war sub. If a melee, most likely Thief or Ninja. If you have any other question post it here. Any of these people are willing to help you.
