Since I'm answering this one quick and have no time to go back on the seventeen or so pages of this thread-

It's been suggested that the "hint" Anno gave to Yuriko Yamaguchi (Ritsuko's seiyuu-Japanese VA) is when Gendo and Naoko were kissing and Ritsuko saw them surreptitiously. Gendo says "I have no regrets about my work" and Naoko responds, "Liar! You just can't stop thinking about Yui. But that doesn't matter." They then kiss and Ritsuko looks down in a mix of surprise and dismay, since it's implied she had a crush on Gendo since she was a teenager.

Apart from the suggested "I have no regrets about my work", there never has been any definite answer. Like the final fate of everyone in EoE, Anno either left viewers to work it out for themselves or interpret it in their own manner.

I have mixed views on the theory...
I like it, don't get me wrong...

However I question how much thought the makers' really put into those minute details - or whether we're reading into something that isn't there.

I agree, her nudity is likely to serve as part of the process being uncomfortable. However be 90% that, 10% fanservice.

I think her reactions are clearly around betrayal.
She loved a man, who would use her and work with her. The dedication to the job, and his goals - probably overtime became a bizarre emotional struggle, whereby she was committed to the job as part of loving him - or dealing with loneliness.

I wondered whether her reaction and saying "Liar" was a reaction to him saying something like "I'm sorry" or "I love you".
Because both, coming from him, would be a shock and then warrant "Liar"

I do love Evangelion, and it's endless speculative possibilties

He said that what Gendo actually said was
