Comment on Ask John: How Much Influence do Americans Have in Anime Co-Productions? by PockyBox.com

I'm always nervous when I hear of American companies or even the fan community charting the course of an anime production. I keep thinking back to the Ninja Scroll series, which exploited just about everything that made the movie great, but in the blandest way possible. I can't help but think the only reason this series exists is because of the popularity of the film in America, since it tanked in Japan.

I also shake my head whenever I hear the original Street Fighter II V opening and endings. Everytime I hear them, I exclaim "We got ripped off!" I'm not sure what Manga was thinking when they chopped off the incredible original music and stapled on the lousy American-produced techno we're forced to listen to today. I've always hated it, even before I knew it was a replacement for something better. All because someone decided Americans didn't want Japanese music in their Street Fighter cartoon.

But that's getting into a different topic. My question is this: why can't American fans be satisfied with what the Japanese creators give us? I personally don't mind that sequels to series I love aren't being produced because I wouldn't want the creator (or corperate suits) to stretch a title further than it was meant to go. I'd rather have one great series than one great series with a putrid one attached to it.

Tenchi is near and dear to my heart because it was my first anime, so I'll always love it, but after years of not concluding the original OVA in any true sense only to have more twists added when none were need (shoveling as much plot on the pile as possible) has made me bitter towards the idea of a new Tenchi series. I'm almost tempted hope it is left to be a fond memory rather than risk ruining it.

I'm really surprised people even discuss this anymore. Call it conditioning from 11 years of anime fandom, but I just don't notice hair color and style anymore, and I'm sure there are many anime fans who have since tuned this aspect out.

I hope that there won't be anymore movies based on anime, Manga or Video Games as that the majority of them sucked BIG TIME. Beside, the idea of Hollywood movies based on anime or manga doesn't excite me at all.

Question; What is the source of the sentence "Reportedly the three individuals arrested are well known suppliers of new anime episodes which international fan translators use to create fansubs. "?

It's somewhat more popular in Canada from what I've seen. Gundam SEED in particular did much better on TV and received several repeat airings and eventually the sequel, Gundam SEED Destiny also aired. Of course that could be attributed to it's much better TV treatment and lack of editing. Overall though, the impression I've gotten is that it is at least somewhat more popular than in the U.S.

The Go Nagai movies and manga suggest that at least the animated 70s versions exist in the same universe.

As far as cameo's go, almost everyone appears everywhere when it comes to Go Nagai. :)

There's also Dunbine and Garzey's Wing. Possibly Wings of Rean.

The Nabari no Ou anime introduces a ninja who has no qualms about using a gun (even to the extent of sneering at one of the main characters who questions his honour) in the third episode, although I'm pretty sure he's a side character considering the size of the cast. He may or may not be in the manga, but I don't see why they'd introduce a gun-wielding antagonist purely for the sake of the anime.
