FUNimation has acquired the domestic home video, broadcast, merchandising, mobile, and streaming rights to the current anime TV series High School DxD. FUNi will begin streaming the series domestically on January 23 with a home video release to follow. The risqué supernatural comedy series premiered in Japan on the 6th.

Can’t say that I’m either surprised or filled with respect for this acquisition.

Heroes Phantasia Opening Anime

Friday, January 13th, 2012

Namco Bandai Games has released the original opening anime sequence for its upcoming cross-over PSP RPG game Heroes Phantasia. The game allows players to utilize characters from the Blood+, Darker than Black, Keroro Gunso, My-HiME, R.O.D., Rune Soldier, Scryed, Slayers, and Sorcerous Stabber Orphen franchises. The game will be officially released on the 19th.

While it’s nice to see these characters animated again, albeit briefly, what’s the point of the cross-over if none of them from different franchises interact with each other within the anime sequence? Seems like wasted opportunity.

Yamato Revival Director’s Cut Trailer

Friday, January 13th, 2012

A lengthy trailer for the extended Director’s Cut edition of the 2009 Space Battleship Yamato: Revival Chapter motion picture has now appeared online. The Director’s Cut will add at least 30 minutes of new footage and feature an alternate ending, re-cut scenes, and select newly recorded dialogue. The director’s cut will play in two theaters in Tokyo and Osaka from January 28 to February 3. The trailer includes footage from one new scene from the Director’s Cut.

Hopefully this extended re-cut may salvage some of the really bad 2009 theatrical cut including elements like the awful abrupt treatment of Yuki Kodai.

Toei has released a teaser promoting its upcoming Smile Precure! television series. The ninth Pretty Cure magical girl television anime series will premiere on Feburary 5, taking over the time slot of the current Suite Precure series.

May not be fair to judge based on a 15 second teaser, but this looks exactly like a remake of Yes! Precure 5 with slightly younger characters.

Ask John: What Anime Have the Most Inappropriate Openings?

Wednesday, January 11th, 2012

Question:
For a while now you’ve been posting interesting and unique opening animation sequences which tend to have good animation coupled with solid music. However, there are certainly some very obnoxious opening themes which sound like nails on a chalk board (Denpa Denpa Onna to Seishun Otoko, blargh), or the visuals are blander than those found in the show (Bakuman opening 1. Lame). So, which openings do you think are either disastrous, or utterly mediocre and do the show zero justice?
