Ask John: Is Lucky Star More Popular Than Suzumiya Haruhi?
Wednesday, February 10th, 2010Question:
My roomate recently told me that Lucky Star was a lot more popular in Japan then The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya was. Is this true? If it is, do you think that it means that they might later on down the road make a season 2 to Lucky Star?
Ask John: Why Did Claymore End the Way it Did?
Monday, February 8th, 2010Question:
Why did Claymore have an ending that didn’t solve anything? Claire didn’t get revenge and none of the creatures of the abyss were killed. Will they make a real ending to it?
Ask John: Whatever Happened to Ninku?
Friday, February 5th, 2010
Question:
I really like Ninku and have been interested in it ever since it was bundled together with the first Yu Yu Hakusho movie on [American] DVD. It’s one of the last really big shonen series to never really come to America and that’s always fascinated me. Plus I like old school shonen. However, there’s been very little fansubbing of it and not much viewership of said fansubs. Also, it seems like no anime companies have ever really tried licensing this series at all in any way. Why do you think anime fans and licensing companies have shown so little interest in the series?
Ask John: What’s the Point of the Itano Circus?
Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010Question:
Why in action anime series when a military weapon has multiple missiles, guns, etc. do they all get fired at once? For example, in any Gundam series if a mobile suit, armor, etc. has multiple missile ports, machine guns, or beam weapons they are all fired at once?
Ask John: Will OADs Ever Reach America?
Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010Question:

Ask John: What’s John’s Opinion of Anti-War Anime?
Friday, January 29th, 2010Ask John: What Can the American Cowboy Bebop Movie Do To Succeed?
Wednesday, January 27th, 2010Question:
Anime movies in general have had bad- bad- live action adaptations. Keanu Reeves recently announced that he and Fox saw the script for Cowboy Bebop and loved it, but then decided to simply rewrite everything because they thought it’d cost “half a billion dollars.” I find this news rather bothersome as I’m not sure how the world of Cowboy Bebop could be effectively portrayed on a shoestring budget. What advice you would have to offer Hollywood, John. What would you advise them to do to transform the live-action adaptation of Cowboy Bebop into a hit movie, while preventing it from becoming just another schlocky Dragon Ball Evolution?
Ask John: Are There Still Many Old School Anime Otaku in America?
Monday, January 25th, 2010Question:
As a fan who was introduced to anime by 1980s sci-fi and horror OAVs I have been surprised to see things like Akira, Wicked City and Wings of Honneamise out of print on DVD. It made me wonder. Do you think that many anime fans from that era are still watching and enjoying anime? Are they just dwarfed by an influx of new fans introduced by different means?
Ask John: Why Wasn’t Kanamemo More Popular?
Friday, January 22nd, 2010Question:
Why is Kanamemo not popular? I know that there were a lot of other shows that grabbed attention last year (K-On!, Saki, and Haruhi S2) but I really enjoyed the show Kanamemo and yet unlike the other shows I listed above, there is no figures/statues from the series and apparently is was quite disliked on 2ch from what I heard. It had everything that otaku would like, so what gives?
Ask John: How Has Anime Changed Over the Past 15 Years?
Wednesday, January 20th, 2010Question:
How do you think today’s landscape of anime differs from the landscape of, say, 15 years ago? What kinds of series, movies and OAVs were more prevalent back then in comparison to now?
Ask John: Who Are the Best Female Villains?
Monday, January 18th, 2010Question:
Who are the best female villains of anime? Off the top of my own noggin, I’d have to say Medusa of Soul Eater and Cassa from Black Blood Brothers. But I’d like to hear an expert’s opinion.
Ask John: Where Will Anime Go in America This Decade?
Friday, January 15th, 2010Question:

Ask John: What’s the Rarest American Anime DVD?
Thursday, January 14th, 2010Ask John: Is Anime Jargon Getting Over Used?
Tuesday, January 12th, 2010Question:
With so much debate in the anime world, I find it confusing why generic terms are used to discuss a series which may not include it, such as a Spice and Wolf discussion using tsundere to describe Holo. While I do try to ignore them when I see them, I wonder how many series are potentially not viewed because of the stigma (often negative) assigned to them. What’s your take on generic terms used to describe anime, such as “moe,” “fan service,” “tsundere,” etc.?
