I’ve had this story concept in my mind for so long – literally 16 years now – that my primary and initial concern is just getting it written. I haven’t really given much serious thought yet about how I intend to distribute it. Of course, traditional publication would be quite nice.

What you describe is not that unusual. Anime is replete with examples of that. Far be it for me to give examples as you more than likely know more of them than I do. As for the last part, maybe when a character is about to put another in harm’s way, and he or she then changes his or her mind, looks at the character and says that just before going into harm’s way him or herself. I am sure that could be interpreted several different ways.
