Ousama to Boku Live-Action Movie Announced

Naito Yamada’s Ousama to Boku (The King & I) drama manga is getting a live-action feature film directed by Tetsu Maeda (Saru Lock). The drama will star Masaki Suda (Kamen Rider W) as an 18 year-old who wakes from a 12 year long coma. Tori Matsuzaka (Kamen Rider Decade) will star as his female childhood friend who helps the young man adjust to having a 6 year-old consciousness in an 18 year-old body. The single volume manga premiered in 1992.

Ask John: Why Haven’t Satoshi Kon’s Films Been Relicensed?

Question:
Why has there been a lack of interest on the part of R1 companies to rescue Satoshi Kon’s Perfect Blue and Paranoia Agent? Considering all the posthumous exposure he’s gotten since being associated with certain nameless filmmakers, it should be a no-brainer. Do you think the situation is like Cameron and Battle Angel, in that the deal which allowed Perfect Blue to be remade by Darren Aronofsky prevents anyone from seeing it until the contract expires? Or do you feel Madhouse/VAP might be asking for more money for the rights than they would have if Kon was more niche? Meanwhile, on a recent ANNcast, FUNimation expressed no interest in bringing back Paranoia Agent, even though it’s gotten a recent Blu-Ray version in Japan.

Battle Break Movie Online

Bandai has uploaded studio OLM’s complete 19 minute Battle Break anime film to YouTube. The short based on Bandai’s trading figure battle game premiered yesterday with a screening at the Jump Festa 2012 publicity event in Tokyo.

Jashu Short Promo Anime Released

To commemorate the release of the second and final volume of his samurai adventure manga series Jashu, creator Yu-Ko Osada personally drew an 11 second promotional animation clip featuring the story’s primary characters. Osada’s manga is an adaptation of Takashi Yano’s novel.

Uchu Kyodai TV Anime Announced

Morning Magazine has announced that an anime TV series based on Chuya Koyama’s light drama manga Space Brothers (Uchu Kyodai) will premiere next April. The manga revolves around two brothers who vow to become astronauts. A live-action Uchu Kyodai motion picture is scheduled to hit Japanese theaters on May 5, 2012.

Eiichiro Oda to Supervise Next One Piece Film

After providing story and design suggestions and supervising the production of 2009′s tremendously successful tenth One Piece feature film, original series creator Eiichiro Oda will return to supervise the franchise’s eleventh feature length film. Oda will serve as executive producer for the next feature length One Piece movie. The film will, like the Strong World movie, be set within the ongoing manga/anime continuity and will premiere in December 2012.

Kodoku no Gourmet Drama Announced

A live-action TV series adaptation of Kusumi Masayuki and Taniguchi Jiro’s ongoing gourmet manga Kodoku no Gourmet will premiere on the TV Tokyo network on January 4. Matsushige Yutaka will star as a businessman whose hobby is visiting food shops and restaurants. The shops that appear in the manga and subsequent drama are all existing real-life stores.

Jormungand Anime Announced

The advertising obi on new copies of the tenth volume of Keitaro Takahashi’s crime drama manga Jormungand reveal that studio White Fox (Katanagatari, Steins;Gate) will adapt the manga into an anime television series. The ongoing manga about a globe-trotting underground arms dealer and her assistants/bodyguards premiered in 2006. Viz Media will release its eighth translated volume of the manga next month.

Kadokawa has announced the development of an anime based on Noriko Ogiwara’s modern fantasy novel series Red Data Girl. The supernatural adventure revolves around a sheltered girl from an insulated religious family taking her first venture into public Tokyo.

Nicktoons to Air Dragon Ball GT

Nicktoons will begin broadcasting the 1996 Dragon Ball GT television series on January 16 at 7:00 pm EST. The series hasn’t aired on American television since its broadcast on Toonami that ended in 2005.

An anime adaptation of Yoshiaki Sukeno’s supernatural comedy manga Binbougami ga! is now in development. The ongoing series that launched in 2008 revolves around a blissful human girl who saps “happiness energy” from the people around her and her nemesis, a “binbougami” (poverty god).

Thermae Romae Anime Teaser

The homepage for the upcoming Thermae Romae anime TV series has released a teaser trailer. The Noitamina anime from studio DLE will be three weekly Flash animation episodes directed by Haiyoru! Nyaruani & Honto ni Atta! Reibai-sensei director Azuma Tani. The anime will premiere on January 12. The live-action feature film adaptation of Mari Yamazaki’s comedy manga about a time-traveling Greek bath architect will premiere on April 28.
