To refresh your memory or introduce you to an interesting opening animation sequence, I submit the opening of the 1983 Cat’s Eye TV series. The opening theme is “Cat’s Eye” performed by Anri.

I’m particularly fond of Anri’s 1997 updated version of the song recorded for the live-action movie.

Ask John: Is Wikipedia a Threat to ANN’s Encyclopedia?

Wednesday, September 14th, 2011

Question:
Casual browsing indicates that Wikipedia seems to be on the way to becoming an alternative reference/information source for anime and manga in its own right, as compared to the encyclopedias over at Anime News Network – even if, so far as I see it right now, opinions may differ as to whether it is or might one day be, as comprehensive as ANN’s encyclopedias.

Does John have any particular opinion or point of view on that subject?

Kadokawa Shoten Retracts Final Dantalian no Shoka Novel

Friday, September 9th, 2011

Publisher Kadokawa Shoten has canceled its planned publication of a ninth Dantalian no Shoka light novel next January, “due to various circumstances.” Series author Gakuto Mikumo has explained that he never intended the novel series to extend past seven volumes, but wrote an eighth novel at his editor’s request. Mikumo was asked to write a ninth volume, and Kadokawa Shoten even formally solicited it, but Mikumo has flatly refused to compose another book in the series.

The ninth novel was tentatively scheduled to be released in a limited edition that would include an OAD. Kadokawa Shoten & animation studio Gainax have not yet clarified if the bonus anime episode will still be produced for an alternate distribution method.

I say “Cheers” to Mikumo for standing up to pressure and respecting his artistic integrity over corporate demands. Do readers really want to end a beloved series with a book that the writer didn’t want to write?
