Discotek Acquires Unico

Discotek Media has formally announced its acquisition of the two Unico feature films. Osamu Tezuka directed the 1981 Fantastic Adventures of Unico film adapted from his own manga. Moribi Murano directed the 1983 sequel Unico: To The Magic Island. Both films have previously been broadcast on American television and been released on domestic videotape in English dubbed versions. A distributor named “New Galaxy Anime” announced its acquisition of the first Unico movie in October 2007 but never released the title. Discotek reports that the films will be released bilingually, and, “They will be released this time….”

NIS Acquires KimiTodo 2

NIS America has confirmed its acquisition of domestic home video distribution rights to the 12 episode Kimi ni Todoke 2nd Season television series that aired earlier this year. NIS America will release the first Kimi ni Todoke -From Me to You- television series in two DVD/BD combos beginning next January.

G4 to Air X-Men Next Month

The G4 television network has announced plans to begin broadcasting Marvel Comics’ and Madhouse’s X-Men anime television series on Friday, October 21, at 11:00 pm ET. Actor Scott Porter (Caprica, Friday Night Lights) will provide the English dubbed voice of lead character Cyclops. The 12 episode X-Men anime series aired on Japanese television earlier this year. G4 will air Japan’s currently wrapping up Blade anime series this winter.

2011 Pokemon Movies to Get US Theatrical Screenings

Cinedigm will screen this year’s Pocket Monster Best Wishes! Victini to Kuroki Eiyu Zekrom motion picture in over 300 American digital projection theaters during the December 3-4 weekend under the title “Pokémon the Movie: White – Victini and Zekrom.” The companion film, Pocket Monster Best Wishes! Victini to Shiroki Eiyu Reshiram (Pokémon the Movie: Black — Victini and Reshiram), will also get a limited release this December. Details are forthcoming.

Knight in the Area Anime Announced

This week’s issue of Weekly Shounen Magazine formally announced the development of an anime based on Hiroaki Igano and Kaya Tsukiyama’s soccer manga The Knight in the Area (Area no Kishi). The manga story revolves around Kakeru Aizawa, the younger brother of an adolescent soccer prodigy. While Kakeru believes himself to be bad at soccer, his elder brother believes that Kakeru may have tremendous untapped potential. The ongoing manga launched in 2006; its 27th compiled volume hits Japanese bookstores this month. Co-creator Hiroaki Igano, under the name Tadashi Agi, is the writer for manga including Kami no Shizuku, GetBackers, and Kindaichi Shounen no Jikenbo.

Nisemonogatari TV Anime Announced

An official website and teaser trailer have launched announcing that SHAFT is developing a TV anime based on author NisiOisin’s light novel series Nisemonogatari. The story is a sequel to Bakemonogatari that stars Bakemonogatari protagonist Koyomi Araragi’s two sisters, Tsukihi and Karen. Akiyuki Shinbo & Akio Watanabe, who respectively directed and provided the character designs for the Bakemonogatari anime, will serve the same roles for the Nisemonogatari sequel. The TV anime will premiere in January.

This will be the fourth anime adaptation of novels by NisiOisin following Katanagatari, Bakemonogatari and its prequel Kizumonogatari.

Kizumonogatari Teaser Online

An official website with teaser trailer has launched for SHAFT’s theatrical anime adaptation of NisiOisin’s fantasy novel Kizumonogatari. The story is a prequel to the Bakemonogatari novel series, which was adaptated into an anime TV series by the Kizumonogatari animation staff in 2009. The movie will premiere next year.

Sacred Seven Special Edition in Development

Sunrise is now developing a “Night edition” supplemental episode to its just concluded Sacred Seven television series. The compilation episode will focus on the battle between protagonist Alma and his opponent Night. Although the special will consist primarily of TV series footage, it will include some original animation and newly recorded dialogue. The special will premiere next year.

Sentai Acquires Gendai Maho

Sentai Filmworks has announced its acquisition of the (nearly forgotten) 2009 television series Yoku Wakaru Gendai Maho. The 12 episode series will be released on subtitled domestic DVD in December under the translated title “Modern Magic Made Simple.” The magical fantasy/adventure/comedy series simulcast on Crunchyroll during its Japanese broadcast.

There are certainly worse shows out there. Of course, there are also…

Davis Film Acquires Golgo 13 Rights

Davis Film, the French film production studio behind movies including Crying Freeman (1995), Brotherhood of the Wolf (2001), and Solomon Kane (2009), has acquired the film adaptation rights to Takao Saito’s long-running manga series Golgo 13. The ongoing manga series about the world’s greatest marksman premiered in 1968 and has been adapted into 1973 & 1977 live action movies, a 1983 anime feature film, a 1998 OVA, and a 2008 anime television series.

Remember, folks, Golgo 13 is not an assassin. He’s a sniper, and often times his targets just happen to be people.
