Ask John: Are Music Rights Separate in Anime Licensing?

Tuesday, August 30th, 2011

Question:
I rencently saw your opening posts for Speed Grapher and Gunslinger Girl. Both Japanese openings had pop music songs as part of the opening. I much prefer “Girls on Film” for Speed Grapher and “The Light Before We Land” on Gunslinger Girl. I’m rather disappointed that they never made it on the domestic releases from Funimation. The question I’m posing is this. Are securing music licenses seperate and more expensive? Or rather, when securing the license for the anime, does it become more expensive if they included the rights to a pop song?

Fine-Grain Godzilla Print Surfaces

Friday, August 26th, 2011

A mere day after Criterion quietly revealed its plans to release Ishiro Honda’s seminal 1954 monster movie Gojira on domestic DVD & BD, and following a public request from Criterion for public assistance in locating 35mm materials for director Terry O. Morse’s 1956 English language revision Godzilla: The King of Monsters, an anonymous private collector has come forward with a vintage 35mm fine-grain print of the English language film. “Fine grain duplicates” were, “High quality positive prints made from the original negative for the express purpose of making further internegatives – it’s not quite as good as having the original camera negative, but it’s as close as anyone can get 50 years later.”

Classic Media & Sony Pictures released the 1954 Gojira film on subtitled American DVD for the first time ever in 2006 in a handsome double-disc special edition.
