Ask John: Why do Even American Otaku Hate Lolicon?

Tuesday, June 7th, 2011

Question:
Why is lolicon so reviled in American anime fandom? Seems whenever the issue of morality and how it’s not actually causing harm arises, it still falls on deaf ears.

First Look at Blade Anime

Friday, June 3rd, 2011

Japanese broadcaster Animax has released the first teaser trailer for Madhouse’s forthcoming anime television series based on Marvel Comics’ character Blade. The series will premiere on July 1.

I know that it’s unfair to judge a show based on a short teaser, but I can’t resist thinking that this looks more like Madhouse’s Iron Man & Wolverine than its X-Men, which is not praise.

FUNimation Again Threatens to Sue Downloaders

Friday, June 3rd, 2011

On May 27, Texas-based lawyer Evan Stone filed a second copyright infringement suit in Texas district court on behalf of FUNimation. This latest suit charges 1,427 anonymous individuals with downloading director Herman Yau’s 2010 live-action martial arts film The Legend is Born: Ip Man (not to be confused with director Wilson Yip’s 2008 & 2010 films starring Donnie Yen). FUNimation announced its acquisition of domestic distribution rights to the Chinese action film on May 11. The proposed lawsuit targets individuals that downloaded the film via BitTorrent from May 13 – May 26. The lawsuit was filed in the Eastern District of Texas Court.

Last March Mr. Stone, on behalf of FUNimation, filed a similar copyright infringement lawsuit against One Piece downloaders. That suit was filed in Northern District of Texas Court and was rejected by the court and eventually dropped.

Yu-Gi-Oh! Zexal Licensing Held-up

Friday, June 3rd, 2011

United States Bankruptcy Judge Shelley Chapman has ordered Yu-Gi-Oh franchise owners TV Tokyo and NAS to temporarily halt any and all licensing negotiations regarding the Yu-Gi-Oh franchise while North American rights to the title are in dispute. NAS’ parent company ADK had intended to solicit licensing offers for the current Yu-Gi-Oh! Zexal series at this month’s Licensing Expo International trade convention.

Last March, TV Tokyo & NAS retracted 4Kids’ Entertainment’s North American distribution rights to the Yu-Gi-Oh franchise, claiming that 4Kids’s had fraudulently avoided paying royalties on the license. 4Kids’ filed a countersuit, claiming that TV Tokyo & NAS negated with licensing contract without adequate advance notice, therefore the cancelation should be invalid and 4Kids’ should retain legitimate North American distribution rights to the Yu-Gi-Oh franchise.

The lawsuit will proceed in two phases. The trial will first concentrate on the validity of TV Tokyo & NAS’ retraction of 4Kids’ distribution rights. The second phase will concentrate on the accusation that 4Kids’ owes royalties to TV Tokyo & NAS. The trial will begin on August 29.

Opening A Day

Friday, June 3rd, 2011

To refresh your memory or introduce you to an interesting opening animation sequence, I submit the opening of Artmic’s 3 episode 1990 OVA series Sengoku Busho Retsuden Bakufu Doji Hissatsuman. The opening theme is “Hissatsuman no Uta” performed by Masayuki Yamamoto.

Despite this having a title and content very similar to Tatsunoko’s Time Bokan series, this is actually not one of the Time Bokan series anime. And yes, I have watched the full first episode.

Ask John: What do Americans Think of Anime Now?

Friday, June 3rd, 2011

Question:
Has America as a whole really moved passed the mid to late 90′s notion that “Anime is nothing but Magical Girls, Giant Robots and Porn,” and if so how far past that idea have we moved?
