Ask John: Will Madoka Magica Reach America?

Monday, March 7th, 2011

Question:
Your last question and answer about the death of magical girls series in the West bears another look. Do you think “Puella Magi Madoka Magica” has the pull to make it over here. I haven’t had this much interest in an anime series for a long time. Each week the wait is frustratingly long. Looking at the never ending Magica threads on 4-Chan and a full scale wiki dedicated to “Puella Magi Madoka Magica” makes one wonder just how popular this series is in the West. So just how popular is “Puella Magi Madoka Magica” in the West and do you think it is popular enough to make the jump over the Pacific? I know I am buying the Japanese BDs as they come out.

Gyo Anime Announced

Friday, March 4th, 2011

Next week’s issue of Big Comic Spirits Magazine will formally announce that anime studio ufotable (Kara no Kyoukai) will produce an anime adaptation of Junji Ito’s horror manga Gyo. The two-volume 2002 manga series is set in Okinawa when a wave of aggressive, bio-organic fish invade land and begin horribly maiming and consuming humans.

Viz distributes both volumes of the manga domestically.

Oh neat! This was a very creepy and disturbing horror story that should be very interesting to see in motion.

Two Ghibli Museum Shorts No Longer Exclusive

Friday, March 4th, 2011

New York City’s Carnegie Hall will screen the Hayao Miyazaki directed 2006 short anime films Yado-Sagashi (House Hunting) and Mizugumo Monmon (Mon Mon the Water Spider) in a special one-day only screening at 6:30 and 8:30pm on March 26th. The two short films have previously only been screened seasonally at the Studio Ghibli Museum in Mitaka, Tokyo, Japan. The 12 minute long “House Hunting” and 14 minute long “Mon Mon the Water Spider” are both unique in the respect that neither film includes any spoken dialogue. Both film illustrate their stories entirely with imagery. The exclusive screening will be part of the JapanNYC festival that runs from March 14 through April 9.

The $15 ticket price may seem steep, but it’s a lot less than a plane ticket to Tokyo.

Thundercats Anime Teaser

Wednesday, March 2nd, 2011

In case you haven’t seen this, here’s the Cartoon Network’s first teaser for the Warner Bros. produced, Studio 4°C animated Thundercats revival.

I’m not saying that this looks bad, but I do think that a sizeable chunk of this footage does look and feel a little bit lifeless and bland.
