Opening A Day

Thursday, March 17th, 2011

To refresh your memory or introduce you to an interesting opening animation sequence, I submit the ultra-minimal opening of the 1997 Eat-Man TV series. The opening theme is “Chiisana Koi no Melody,” performed by King-Show.

If you thought the Gosenzosama Banbanzai opening was minimalistic, get a load of this! If nothing else, it’s certainly unique.

Ask John: Why Is Yu-Gi-Oh Capsule Monsters Called “Duel Monsters Alex” in Japan?

Thursday, March 17th, 2011

Question:
I have waited five years for a Japanese release of “Yu-Gi-Oh! Capsule Monsters” anime. Then I’ve read something on Wikipedia that says “Yu-Gi-Oh! Capsule Monsters” was known in Japan as “Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters ALEX.” “Yu-Gi-Oh! Capsule Monsters was made specificaly for the U.S., so why did Japan name the title of the show from “Yu-Gi-Oh! Capsule Monsters” to “Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters ALEX”? Is “Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters ALEX” a production name?

TAF 2011 Canceled

Wednesday, March 16th, 2011

The official website of the 2011 Tokyo International Anime Fair (TAF) has announced that this year’s event has been canceled following the March earthquake & tsunami. The event was canceled in response to concerns about uncertain power supplies and traffic accessibility, and the safety of attendees. The event was scheduled to be held at the Tokyo Big Sight convention center in Odaiba, Tokyo on March 24-27. Tokyo Big Sight has reportedly suffered some earthquake damage.

This year’s TAF had been the subject of tremendous controversy. Following the passing of ammendments to the Tokyo Youth Healthy Development Ordinance earlier this year, at least 11 major Japanese publishers announced planst to boycott the TAF and hold their own Anime Contents Expo (ACE) in Chiba on March 26-27. Reportedly the ACE has also been canceled, but the planned convention has not made any official public announcements since prior to the Sendai earthquake.
