Second Hoshi o Ou Kodomo Trailer Released

Japanese publisher/distributor Media Factory has released full trailer for creator/director Makoto Shinkai’s upcoming feature film Hoshi o Ou Kodomo: Children who Chase Lost Voices from Deep Below. The highly anticipated film from the creator of Voices of a Distant Star and 5cm Per Second will open theatrically in Japan on May 7.

I have a tremendous amount of adoration and respect for Makoto Shinkai’s films, but I’m not so enamored that I can’t say that all of them also have weaknesses. This trailer reveals influences from such a disparate variety of anime and anime genres that I can only hope that the narrative manages to deftly blend all of these different elements naturally and effectively.

    Maybe Shinkai is in a transitional period where he desperately wants his work to “say something more” without actually doing something more (i.e., settling on a singular genre or using only one narrative point of view).

    He’s a better animator than writer. I stopped watching Place Promised for free on CR because it reminded me of 5 CM, which was basically Voices of a Distant Star without the Gunbuster influences.
