Thursday, February 17th, 2011

Sentai Filmworks has announced its acquisition of the 2008 Allison to Lillia television series, the 2006 Hoshizora Kiseki (Starry-Sky Miracle) ONA, and the 2009 Korean short “Watashi no Coffee Samurai ~Jihanki Teki na Kareshi~” (My Coffee Samurai ~My Boyfriend is a Vending Machine~).

Hoshizora Kiseki & Coffee Samurai, both distributed in Japan by Comix Wave, will be released domestically on one subtitled DVD retailing at $19.98 beginning May 10.

The first 13 episodes of the 26 episode Allison & Lillia television anime will be released on subtitled DVD retailing at $49.98 on May 17. The fantasy drama is based on a light novel series by Kino’s Journey creator Keiichi Sigsawa.

Personally, I’m most pleased to see animator Chang Hyung Yun’s Coffee Samurai getting greater exposure. It got practically none at all back in late 2009 when it aired in Japan.

Onigamiden Trailer

Thursday, February 17th, 2011

The homepage for Studio Pierrot’s upcoming fantasy adventure film Onigamiden has added a streaming trailer. The adaptation of Takafumi Takada’s two volume novel about a war between humans and oni (demons) in Kyoto during the Heian era will hit Japanese theaters on April 29.

Pierrot’s Kumo no You ni, Kaze no You ni and Fushigi Yuugi have certainly proven that the studio can do historical fantasy. And Naruto has proven beyond any doubt that the studio can produce stellar action. So I’m hoping for the best when this trailer gives me a mixed impression.

Ask John: What Happened to Anime no Chikara?

Friday, February 11th, 2011

Question:
The Anime no Chikara project had a great premise. Fresh new ideas, not based on mainstream moé or ninja or samurai, and not based on previous works like manga or video games or novels. I loved all three shows that came out of that project, but is the project dead? Are they waiting for a new season? I havn’t heard anything more, and I’m afraid this wonderful little project died before it could really get going. Please, if there’s any news let us know.
