Ask John: What Was the Past Decade’s Landmark Mecha Anime?

Wednesday, January 5th, 2011

Question:
I am a big fan of mecha anime and have a huge respect for shows that pioneer and evolve the genre. Mazinger Z, Mobile Suit Gundam, and the Evangelion TV series defined the mecha animes of the 70′s, 80′s, and 90′s, respectively. However, I couldn’t think of a mecha anime that was anything revolutionary in the past decade. In fact, most of the mecha anime I’ve seen from 2000 to 2009 were either remakes of past mecha anime like Gaiking or homage of the same like Gurren Lagann. Was there a mecha anime I did not notice that redefined the genre in the last decade or there really wasn’t one?

Dororon Enma-kun Meeramera Trailer

Monday, January 3rd, 2011

The homepage for the upcoming Dororon Enma-kun Meeramera television series has added a streaming trailer. The remake of the 1973 Dororon Enma-kun horror adventure series will premiere later this year.

Considering how successful the 2007 Ge Ge Ge no Kitaro series was and the fact that this appears to be a literal update of the ’73 series, I anticipate that this may become one of Japan’s big hits of 2011.

Ask John: Is Anime Obsessed With Lesbians?

Monday, January 3rd, 2011

Question:
Is anime obsessed with lesbians? I mean I can name Sailors Neptune and Uranus (Sailor Moon), Tomoyo and Sonomi Daidouji (Cardcaptor Sakura), Kaorin from Azumanga Daioh, Haruhi Suzumiya herself said she’s bi-sexual, the Major from GITS is bisexual, and at least one of the girls from Lucky Star, according to creator Kagami Yoshimizu, is lesbian, and so is Chizuru Honsho (Bleach). That’s just the confirmed ones that I can name off the top of my head. And that’s not getting into yuri series like Kashimashi, Candy Boy, and Aoi Hana, nor is it mentioning characters like Yomiko Readman and Nenene Sumiregawa (R.O.D The TV) who may or may not be.
