Fractale Simulcast Halted
Thursday, January 20th, 2011The Fractale Production Committee behind this month’s new television series Fractale has ordered Funimation to halt online distribution of the ongoing series until Funimation eliminates all unauthorized internet distribution of the show. Funimation began its officially sanctioned online distribution of the series last Thursday. The series’ first episode remains available for online viewing, but the release of future episodes will be on indefinite hiatus.
I’m absolutely not trying to condone video piracy, but a Japanese copyright owner insisting that an American company police the entire internet and stop illegal web distribution that starts in Japan with Japanese uploaders seems absurdly irrational and unreasonable.

Ask John: Why Do Licensors Acquire Long Shows if They’re Not Going to Release All of Them?
Thursday, January 20th, 2011Question:
I was wondering why some companies tend to license long anime series, and after releasing a few volumes on DVD or a few episodes on TV, then later they lose interest in releasing any more of the series. For example is Funimation’s case with Sgt. Frog and Shin-Chan. Both series still on going and have a huge amount of episodes, yet both seem to have stopped after having 51 or 52 episodes released from their respective series. Although the most notorious of licensing long anime series and then not releasing them in their entirety is Viz, among there catalog includes Gash Bell, Prince of Tennis, MAR, Blue Dragon, and the Rockman.EXE series to name a few. I know in part that whether a series will get more episodes or DVDs released is due to sales, but why bother going through the trouble of doing all that work if there is no interest to follow through with the rest of the series.
Sentai Acquires Asylum Session
Tuesday, January 18th, 2011Sentai Filmworks will release Tact (Catblue: Dynamite) Aoki’s 2009 full CG anime short film The Asylum Session on domestic subtitled DVD on April 26.
The film’s narrative isn’t too too bad, although it’s a bit under developed. But viewers have to be able to overlook very primitive CG and some stilted animation. This is another somewhat obscure anime that I have watched.
