Ask John: Is Project A-Ko the First Yuri Anime?

Friday, December 24th, 2010

Question:
Would PROJECT A-KO be of anthropological significance for being one of, if not even the, first yuri anime? The entire film is, at its’ core, primarily about B-ko trying to impress C-ko, a girl she’s got an unhealthy fascination with so she’ll dump her “best friend” – the title character – and join her in her giant decadent Roman bath, obviously for reasons that have absolutely nothing to do with living out pent up sexual frustration from when they were in kinder garden. I know that Kaze to Ki no Uta was the first yaoi anime/yaoi manga, but don’t have a clue where the roots to girl-love date back to in Japanese pop culture. Your insights?

Hen Zemi TV Anime Announced

Wednesday, December 22nd, 2010

Morning Magazine has formally announced the development of an anime TV series adaptation of TAGRO’s risqué comedy manga series Hen Zemi (or “Hen Semi,” as it’s also officially spelled). The manga about an ordinary college girl taking a class about (and filled with) sexual abnormality was adapted into an OAD released last July. A second OAD is scheduled for release with the manga’s fifth collected volume next March.

Considering how close the first OAD came to being outright pornography, I wonder how this could be effectively adapted into TV anime suitable for broadcast.
