Mamoru Oshii to Helm Cyborg 009 CG Short

Consumer electronics manufacturer Panasonic has commissioned anime studio Production I.G and director Mamoru Oshii to create a 4 minute & 45 second full CG stereoscopic 3D anime short film based on the late Shotaro Ishinomori’s classic sci-fi action manga Cyborg 009. Composer Kenji Kawai, who has contributed soundtracks to Oshii directed anime including Ghost in the Shell, Patlabor, and Twilight Q, will provide the score for the short film. The short will premiere with screenings at the Panasonic booth at the CEATEC Japan 2010 trade show from October 5-8.

New 3D One Piece & Toriko Movies Announced

Reportedly next week’s issue of Weekly Shonen Jump Magazine will formally announce the March 19, 2011 premiere of “Jump Heroes Film,” a double-feature consisting of new 3D One Piece & Toriko movies.

Is that CG rendered One Piece I see?

Dream C Club is Getting Anime

The smash hit Xbox 360 dating simulation game Dream C Club is being merchandized into a pair of anime music video collections. Two Dream C Club Pure Songs Clips DVD & CD sets will go on sale November 10. The first DVD will contain original anime music videos starring Dream C Club characters Amane and Setsu. The second volume will feature characters Airi and Mari.

Considering the popularity of the game, it’s probably only a matter of time before Dream C Club gets a conventional anime TV series.

Nyaruani TV Series Titled

Publisher Softbank Creative has formally revealed the full title of this fall’s upcoming Haiyore! Nyaruani television anime series. The TV series will be titled “Haiyore! Nyaruani: Remember My Mr. Lovecraft.” The adaptation is based on Manta Aisora’s goofy light novel series which is itself inspired by the “Cthulhu mythos” created by American author Howard Phillips Lovecraft (1890-1937).

Ask John: Is My Hime Really A Deconstruction of the Magical Girl Genre?

My friends keep insisting that My-HiME is a “deconstruction of the magical girl genre” that parodies all of the genre’s major tropes. Admittedly I’ve only seen a little bit of My-HiME & a few magical girls shows from start to finish, but I’m failing to see the connection. John, what are you thoughts?

Arakawa 2 Teaser Now Streaming

The homepage for next month’s Arakawa Under the Bridge *2 television series has added a streaming teaser. The series is a sequel to this past spring’s first TV anime adaptation of Hikaru Nakamura’s bizarre gag manga. The new series will premiere on October 4.

Bakuman Teaser Now Streaming

The homepage for next month’s Bakuman anime television series has added a short streaming teaser. The drama about two high school boys who aspire to become a professional manga creator team is based on a manga by Death Note creators Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata. The series will premiere on October 2.

More Berserk Anime Confirmed

The advertising obi on new copies of the Japanese 35th collected volume of Kentarou Miura’s dark fantasy action manga series Berserk state that a “new anime project” is in development. The manga was adapted into a 25 episode television series in 1997, and fans have been clamoring for more ever since.

Blood: The Last Vampire anime film director Hiroyuki Kitakubo revealed via Twitter that he’s heard rumor that studio “4_C” is developing a full CG Berserk anime, and that studio “_°C” may be attempting to set up its own motion-capture filming studio.

A year ago four screenshots of new Berserk animation attributed, without confirmation, to anime studio 4°C did surface.

K-On Movie Announced

Coming as less surprise to otaku than to series voice actress Asami Sanada (who played teacher Sawako Yamanaka), the homepage for the K-On anime franchise has confirmed the development of a feature film now that the 26 episode second TV series has just ended. Considering the tremendous popularity of the anime franchise, it’s difficult to imagine the franchise not getting a movie.

Sengoku Basara Movie Announced

The homepage for the cult hit television anime series Sengoku Basara, an adaptation of Capcom’s action game franchise, has announced that the anime franchise will get a feature film next year.

This series seems to have hit upon a winning combination of evoking pride in Japanese nationalism and history while simultaneously poking fun at it, all in a stylish and exciting package.

Crunchyroll to Stream Yumeiro Patisserie Professional

Crunchyroll has announced plans to continue its simulcast of the Yumeiro Patisserie anime television series with next month’s second series, Yumeiro Patisserie Professional. Yumeiro Patisserie Professional will be available to viewers in the United States, Canada, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland, Iceland, and the Middle East beginning October 2.

Gainax to Partner With Subaru

A teaser website has launched announcing a collaborative project between anime studio Gainax and automobile manufacturer Subaru. Shouji Saeki (Mahoromatic, Strike Witches) will direct. Daisuke Kikuchi (Gurren Lagann, Mahoromatic: Tadaima Okaeri) will serve as concept artist. And Mai Otsuka (Shakugan no Shana, Hanamaru Yochien) will serve as character designer.
