Second Hanasaku Iroha Teaser Released

The P.A. Works animation studio homepage now launches with a new, second teaser for the studio’s upcoming 10th anniversary production, Hanasaku Iroha. The new trailer again doesn’t include any animation footage, but it does provide an extended introduction to the cast.

Deka Wanko Drama Announced

This week’s new issue of You magazine has formally announced that Kozueko Morimoto’s current manga series Deka Wanko (Detective Doggie) will be adapted into a live action television series. The manga serial, which premiered in April 2008, revolves around young police detective Ichiko “Wanko” Hanamori who uses her keen dog-like sense of smell to solve unusual cases.

Kozueko Morimoto’s earlier comedy manga series Gokusen was adapted into an anime television series and a successful live action TV and feature film franchise.

Live Action Hayate no Gotoku Announced

Taiwan’s Gala TV has announced plans to produce a live action adaptation of Kenjirou Hata’s Japanese comedy adventure manga series Hayate no Gotoku ~ Hayate the Combat Butler. Since 20 year-old actress Shin-Hye Park will play Nagi Sanzenin (13 years-old in the manga) and 28 year-old actor George Hu will play Hayate Ayasaki (16 years-old in the manga), this may be a loose adaptation.

New Minami no Teio Drama Announced

Comedian Junior Chihara will star as the notorious loan shark Ginjiro Manda in Shin Minami no Teio (New King of Minami District), a new live action TV series adaptation of Dai Tennoji and Rikiya Gou’s ongoing manga series Minami no Teio. The manga, which debuted in 1992, has 105 collected volumes so far and has already been adapted into 64 live action movies starring Riki Takeuchi. The new TV series, the first live action adaptation since 2007, will premiere on September 21.

To refresh your memory or introduce you to an interesting opening animation sequence, I offer the first opening of 1986′s Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ TV series. The theme song is “Anime Ja Nai” sung by Masato Arai.

I really like the way this opening acknowledges continuity in the Gundam franchise.

Second xxxHOLiC Rou OAD Announced

Japanese publisher Kodansha has officially confirmed that a second xxxHOLiC Rou OAD will be released next spring. The first xxxHOLiC Rou OAD was released last April with limited edition copies of the 17th volume of CLAMP’s xxxHOLiC manga.

Second Yumeiro Patissiere TV Series Announced

Reportedly the current Yumeiro Patissiere shoujo anime television series will evolve into its second series on October 3rd. The new series will be titled “Yumeiro Patissiere Professional.” Crunchyroll has been streaming the series with English subtitles since November 2009.

Just as Gokujo! Mechamotte Iincho did earlier this year, Yumeiro Patissiere will likely just append its title, possibly introduce a new opening animation sequence, and continue airing weekly episodes uninterrupted.

Kihachiro Kawamoto Dead at 85

Acclaimed Japanese puppeteer and animator Kihachiro Kawamoto passed away due to pneumonia on Monday, August 23. He was 85. Kawamoto may be best known to international animation fans as the director of the 2005 puppet animation movie The Book of the Dead (Shisha no Sho). Kawamoto also directed the 2003 anthology of esoteric & experimental Japanese animation Winter Days (Fuyu no hi). Kawamoto started his career in animation with Toho in 1946.

Ryu ga Gotoku TV Drama Announced

Kurohyou: Ryu ga Gotoku Shinshou, the latest installment in Sega’s Ryu ga Gotoku (known in America as “Yakuza”) video game franchise, will be getting a live action television series. The game will debut on the PSP on September 22. The 11 episode television series will air weekly at 1:25am beginning October 5.
