Viz Streaming New Shows

Viz Media has begun streaming subtitled episodes of the current “Nura: Rise of the Yokai Clan” (Nurarihyon no Mago) and the 2005 Strawberry 100% television series. Both shows are hosted by Hulu and are available on the Viz Anime site and Hulu homepage.

Crunchyroll Reveals New Titles

Crunchyroll has launched its simulcasting of the new “Occult Academy” (Seikimatsu Occult Gakuen) television series. Weekly episodes will be available to Crunchyroll subscribers one hour after Japanese broadcast, and available to all viewers one week later.

Crunchyroll will begin simulcasting this month’s new Tono to Issho television series today, shortly after the first episode airs in Japan.

Hobby Japan to Expand into America

Japanese publisher Hobby Japan has announced plans to publish English language editions of its Queen’s Blade & Queen’s Blade Rebellion RPG books and Akira Suzuki’s Hyakka Ryoran Samurai Girls light novels. The initial digital releases will be distributed for free via Apple’s iBook store, Amazon’s Kindle store, and a not-yet-established official website. The books will be later printed and sold in traditional books that come with collectible figures. Hobby Japan has not yet determined a launch date for this initiative.

Nozomi Has Utena Movie

While Nozomi Entertainment announced its acquisition of North American distribution rights to the 1997 Revolutionary Girl Utena last weekend, Japan’s Production I.G has revealed that Nozomi also has distribution rights for the 1999 Utena motion picture.

New FMA Movie Announced

The recently broadcast 64th and final episode of the second Fullmetal Alchemist television series (known in America as “Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood”) concluded with an announcement that a new feature film spin-off is in development.

Second Kure-nai OAD Announced

Japanese publisher Shueisha has announced that the sixth limited-edition volume of Yamato Yamamoto’s Kure-nai manga, based on the light novel series by Kentaro Katayama, will include a 30 minute OAD. The fifth Kure-nai manga volume released in Japan last week included the first Kure-nai OAD. The franchise was adapted into a 12 episode television series in 2008.

Additional Jump Festa Movies Announced

Shueisha has announced that this fall’s Jump Super Anime Tour 2010 will feature the previously announced Beelzebub and Toriko short movies along with new, exclusive short films from Bleach, Nurarihyon no Mago, and Tegami Bachi. This year’s tour will make stops in Fukuoka (October 23), Tokyo (October 30-31), Osaka (November 6-7), Nagoya (November 13-14), and Sapporo (November 21).

Ask John: Is Moé Viable in China?

Question:
Can moé be big in China? Since China has a huge disproportion population of males versus females, I think that moé can be easily marketed to males there who might feel lonely and need a fictional “waifu” like in Japan now.

FUNi Reveals New Acquisitions

FUNimation has revealed a selection of its latest license acquisitions and license rescues.

FUNimation will provide streaming simulcast for this month’s new Kuroshitsuji II, Legend of the Legendary Heroes, Sekirei ~Pure Engagement~, Sengoku Basara 2, and Shiki anime television series along with the live-action Moyashimon TV drama.

New American premiere home video licenses include Black Lagoon: Roberta’s Blood Trail, Darker Than Black ~Ryusei no Gemini~, Hellsing OVAs 5-7, Shakugan no Shana II along with the Shana movie and OVA series, Toaru Kagaku no Railgun, Toaru Majutsu no Index, and the Trigun: Badlands Rumble motion picture.

License rescues from Geneon number: Ai Yori Aoshi, Armitage III, Haibane Renmei, Hellsing (the original TV series), Serial Experiments Lain, Tenchi Muyo TV series 1 & 2, the original OVAs, and the motion pictures, and Texhnolyze.

FUNimation has also stated that it presently does not have domestic distribution rights for the Evangelion: 2.0 You Can [Not] Advance motion picture.

Nozomi Acquiress Sora no Woto & Utena

Nozomi Entertainment has announced its acquisition of the Sora no Woto and Revolutionary Girl Utena television series. The 39 episode Utena series, previously released on American DVD by Central Park Media, will be re-released next year in 3 boxed sets. Nozomi’s release will use the Japanese DVD remastered footage for its source.

The complete 13 episode Sora no Woto will likewise premiere in a single DVD collection next year.

Sentai Acquires Highschool of the Dead

Sentai Filmworks has formally announced its domestic acquisition of the upcoming Highschool of the Dead anime television series. Madhouse’s adaptation of Daisuke Sato and Shouji Sato’s action horror manga will initially simulcast weekly on The Anime Network beginning at 1am EDT on Monday, July 5. A bilingual home video release will follow.

Aniplex to Localize Durarara

Aniplex has announced plans to localize its Durarara television series for a bilingual American DVD release. The 26 episode adaptation of Ryohgo Narita’s ensamble cast suspense drama novel series broadcast 24 episodes produced by Aniplex and animated by Brains Base earlier this year. The first 24 subtitled episodes have already streamed on Crunchyroll. The bilingual DVD release will premiere in January.

Mecha Afro-kun OVA Announced

An OVA adaptation of Tokyo Zombie creator Yusaku Hanakuma’s Cyborg Salaryman Mecha Afro-kun gag manga will hit Japanese DVD on September 3. Hanakuma personally wrote, directed, and animated the 32 minute episode titled simply “Mecha Afro-kun.” As the title suggests, the story revolves around “the bizarre daily life of the latest cyborg salaryman model, which has just been hired at a Japanese company in the near future.”

Bandai Acquires K-On!

Bandai Entertainment has announced its acquisition of domestic distribution rights to the first season of the cult hit slice-of-life comedy anime television series K-On! Bandai has not yet publicly confirmed whether the series will receive an English dub, nor who will be cast if a dub is produced. Bandai also has not yet decided whether the series will be released domestically on DVD, Blu-ray, or both formats.
