Imagi’s Gatchaman Not Dead Yet

Friday, July 16th, 2010

Hong Kong based Imagi Studios has released a new 64 second teaser trailer for its supposedly still-in-development CG Gatchaman motion picture. Imagi International Holdings Ltd. announced last February that the Imagi animation studio would be closed and liquidated. According to former Imagi creative & art director Felix Ip, this trailer was produced before the February mass lay-off and the announcement of the studio liquidation. Felix Ip has removed mention of this new trailer from his blog.

Not that I’m complaining, but this sure looks more like Gatchaman via Alex Ross than via Tatsuo Yoshida and Tatsunoko Pro.

Opening A Day

Friday, July 16th, 2010

To refresh your memory or introduce you to an interesting opening animation sequence, I submit to you a little weekend treat, the opening animation of the 1983 Daicon IV sci-fi convention animated by the fans that would later form Gainax, and Gonzo’s homage to the Daicon IV animation (and Galaxy Express 999), the opening sequence of the 2005 Densha Otoko live action drama. The theme song for both is ELO’s “Twilight.”

Ask John: What Makes a Harem Anime Protagonist Likable?

Friday, July 16th, 2010

Question:
Casual observation suggests that among a portion of what may be called the “anime blogging” community, the initial opinion towards “Ladies Versus Butlers,” which was for the most part, negative, underwent an almost complete turnaround as the series progressed. To loosely borrow comments from one such blogger, the change in opinion towards that programme was possibly in no small part due to the presence of what some labelled a “likeable harem lead.”

Notwithstanding whether you have followed “L. vs B.” to any degree, what might you consider to constitute a “likeable harem lead,” and do any particular examples – past or present – come to mind?

Ask John: Is an OAV a Good or Bad Predictor of a Second Series?

Thursday, July 15th, 2010

Question:
Is an OAV a good sign for a second season? I’m specifically talking about Kure-nai. In 2008 it had a TV season and in 2010 it had an OAV produced that was distributed with the manga. Do you think that the OAV is a good sign the series is still popular enough to warrant animation being produced and a second season is possible or is it more like the series isn’t popular enough to get a season, so all we’ll get is 30 minute chunks once every blue moon?
