Opening A Day

To refresh your memory or introduce you to an interesting opening animation sequence, I submit to you a little weekend treat, the opening animation of the 1983 Daicon IV sci-fi convention animated by the fans that would later form Gainax, and Gonzo’s homage to the Daicon IV animation (and Galaxy Express 999), the opening sequence of the 2005 Densha Otoko live action drama. The theme song for both is ELO’s “Twilight.”

    For me, this is what anime is all about. Energetic, creative, imaginative – maybe it comes from watching the anime of that era, but I found the Daicon IV segment to be terrific. Like the trip without the acid (jk). ELO is always a plus, too. Wish we had more anime like that now. I liked the Densha Otoko opening, too. The homage was excellent. Treading on an old argument here, but it’s fundamentally different from American animation – and I hope it stays that way.
