Live Action Evangelion Still in Development

Friday, February 5th, 2010

weta_eva26

Halo Legends & Appleseed: Ex Machina producer Joseph Chou has told Anime News Network that development of the proposed American live action Evangelion motion picture is still “very active.” Chou explained that due to the crash of the American anime distribution industry, AD Vision CEO John Ledford was forced to sideline work on the project, which was first announced in 2003. Ledford is still involved in the project, but producer Chou has taken over primary responsibility for proposing the film to Hollywood. Chou said, “Right now we’re with a producer and a studio that really understands beyond the whole mecha impact… They’re really looking beyond that, and really looking at drama, human elements, even to those elements that appeal to otaku.”

I’ll believe it when I see it.

Ask John: Whatever Happened to Ninku?

Friday, February 5th, 2010

Ninku

Question:
I really like Ninku and have been interested in it ever since it was bundled together with the first Yu Yu Hakusho movie on [American] DVD. It’s one of the last really big shonen series to never really come to America and that’s always fascinated me. Plus I like old school shonen. However, there’s been very little fansubbing of it and not much viewership of said fansubs. Also, it seems like no anime companies have ever really tried licensing this series at all in any way. Why do you think anime fans and licensing companies have shown so little interest in the series?

Yen_Press_Feb_2010_Acquisitons

Yen Press has announced its acquisition of four new Japanese print titles: Puyo’s The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi-chan (Suzumiya Haruhi-chan no Yuutsu) manga, kakifly’s K-ON! manga, Fumi Yoshinaga’s Not Love But Delicious Foods (Ai ga Nakutemo Kutte Yukemasu) manga, and Mizuki Nomura’s first Literature Girl (Bungaku Shoujo) light novel.

Puyo’s super-deformed gag parody of the Suzumiya Haruhi novel series was adapted into a 2008 web anime series by Kyoto Animation. Kyoto Animation also produced last year’s anime TV series adaptation of kakifly’s bishoujo slice-of-life comedy K-On!

Fumi Yoshinaga’s 2005 manga guide book Not Love But Delicious Foods covers the author’s picks of gourmet foods and Japanese culinary destinations. Yoshinaga is best known in America as the creator of manga series including Antique Bakery, Gerard & Jacques, and Ooku.

Mizuki Nomura’s Literature Girl novel series about a mysterious high school girl who literally devours pages of literature and the teen author who satiates her hunger has been adapted into an anime OVA and an anime feature film that will open on May 1.

Yen Press also announced its acquisition of translation and publication rights to French artist Émile Bravo’s picture book Goldilocks and the Seven Squat Bears.

Global Sailor Moon Revival Possible?

Thursday, February 4th, 2010

sailor-moon1

News surfaced last summer that the complete 200 episode Sailor Moon television series would be getting a revival via early 2010 TV broadcast in Italy. License! Global Magazine now quotes Toei Animation Europe director general Kanji Kazahaya who says, “We are certain that strategically Italy is the ideal country to initiate a global re-launch of the classic Japanese animated series such as ‘Sailormoon’.” However, Toei has not announced any plans to relaunch the Sailor Moon franchise in any other global markets. Meanwhile, Toei has licensed new broadcast contracts for Dragon Ball in Chilé and Digimon Frontier in Brazil, and a new DVD release of Digimon Adventure in Brazil. So Toei’s plans for global series relaunches may not necessarily include Sailor Moon.

The 1992 Sailor Moon TV series will begin airing on Italian television this fall.
