Ask John: Why Do Anime Include Love Triangles?

Wednesday, January 6th, 2010

Question:
I just got done watching Vexille last night and noticed how at the end of the movie they threw in a love triangle between the cyborg detective, and two human soldiers, and it reminded me of Inuyasha, which reminded me of harem anime in general like Shuffle! It seems as though that in every anime where there is a love story or a love subplot, there is usually some sort of multiple women vying for one man. So why are there so many love triangles in anime? Is it just to spice things up, or an anime creator’s fantasy, or is there some sort of cultural reference that I am unaware of?

FUNi Acquires Kamui Gaiden & RoboGeisha

Tuesday, January 5th, 2010

Funi_Kamui_Robo

Funimation has announced its acquisition of distribution rights to last year’s live action films Kamui Gaiden and RoboGeisha. Both movies will hit American DVD later this year.

Director Yoichi Sai’s Kamui Gaiden film is an adaptation of Sanpei Shirato’s 1965 ninja manga serial. RoboGeisha is the latest action/splatter comedy from writer/director Noboru Iguchi, the director of Machine Girl and Hajirai Machine Girl.

Can’t say I’m surprised to see FUNi pick up Kamui Gaiden after licensing Ichi and Shinobi ~Heart Under Blade~. But I am surprised to see RoboGeisha go to FUNimation rather than Media Blasters.

Ask John: Where is Tsubasa Chronicle Season Three?

Tuesday, January 5th, 2010

Tsubasa Chronicle

Question:
Will season 3 of Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle ever be licensed for a US release? I’ve read mixed news outlining that season 3 can’t be aired in Japan because of it’s increasingly violent nature and the station that owns the license for Sakura is a child-friendly station. Does that mean the remainder of the series will hang in the balance, or is it possible that a 3rd season any beyond could be in the future? I know there are a couple of OAVs, but is that the last we’ll see of Tsubasa in anime form?
