Thursday, October 1st, 2009

Now that October has arrived, 7-Eleven stores nationwide have launched their Domo-Nation promotion featuring the “Fuji Frost” red apple flavored Slurpee in a variety of Domo cups with Domo straws, and a variety of other Domo-themed packaging and merchandise. The promotion is also kicked off by the premiere of the first of three original Domo webisodes animated by Japanese animation studio dwarf, inc., the original creators of the Domo-kun stop-motion animation. The first new “Domo Loves Slurpee” episode is available online now. Episodes 2 & 3 will debut on the 14th and 30th.

I still love Domo-kun, but I do miss the days when he & his adopted family lived quiet, peaceful lives. I’m having a little trouble adjusting to the pink gas cloud farting, bling sporting, product shilling Domo & company.

Oh! That Domo straw isn’t a superhero outfit; it’s a pro-wrestling costume.

Ask John: Why Are Military References so Common in Anime?

Thursday, October 1st, 2009

Question:
A lot of anime focuses on people in the military or ex-military personnel. Shows like Ghost in the Shell, Rurouni Kenshin, Peacemaker, Full Metal Panic, Blood+, Galaxy Railways and most robot anime tend to have a military backdrop. I was just wondering if there was any reason for this. I also noticed that a lot of these military anime tend to focus either in the samurai era of Japan or near future.

I’m sure if you found the military anime percentage out of all anime, it would be similar to a military Hollywood movies percentage out of all Hollywood movies. But I’m just wondering if there is a reason for such a focus on the military, considering that right now Japan is not a very militaristic country. Or is it all just for entertainment?
