I think it has to do with a Japanese sense of privacy and tact. It's okay to say reveal that someone died of an "illness," but specifying exactly what illness - whether it was pnemunonia or AIDS - may be considered inappropriately intrusive of personal privacy. This phenomenon is apparent even in anime. I wonder why that is. Could it be that the disease has some negative stigma attached (no pun intended). Cancer or Aids for example ?
