Anime Otaku Are Keeping Blu-ray Alive
GfK Marketing Services Japan reports that more than 50% of the money Japanese consumers spent to purchase Blu-ray discs during the first half of 2009 went to anime discs. Furthermore, continuing a trend that started last year, anime continues to be Japan’s best selling media category on Blu-ray. However, Blu-ray sales have not compensated for losses in DVD sales. During the first half of 2009 Japanese DVD sales declined by 15%, and revenue generated from DVD sales fell by 20%.

I hope not. It’ll kind of suck the format dies before I even have a chance to adopt it.

John: Surprised someone as allegedly into the import scene as you wouldn’t own a BD yet. Nothing must-own for you, either, ne? Or is the stuff you want to own too damned expensive? ^_-

Gotta agree with GATS — BluRay is a definite non-starter, the expense of even the cheapest (*cough*PS3*cough*) players and the discs make it about as dead as its rival.

I’d be a Blu-ray supporter if I could afford to be a BD supporter.

Seriously. Where the fudge do Japanese otaku get the money in this suckonomy, especially since they have an old recession on top of this new one? Is there an underground market for fat and/or unshaved host clubs we don’t know about?
