Cynthia (OVERMAN KING GAINER) wouldn't be nearly as interesting a character, and her character's conflict with Gainer Sanga, if she were male. Aina (08TH MS TEAM) was an absolutely critical element to the story of the OVA, and her sudden push-back against her physically/mentally sick older brother, whom she loved dearly, was also important. Even in comedy, a title like DUAL: PARALLEL TROUBLE ADVENTURE carves a story such that only women can pilot mecha... ultimately making good guy Kazuki, a male, the anomaly. On the flipside of the coin, sort of, Karen (also 08TH MS TEAM) is an excellent second-in-command type of character. She enjoys being in charge and likes to delegate work to her comrades, but always comes to regret doing so, regret for being herself and regret for losing others on the battlefield for doing what's best for the squad I think that the difference in gender adds a huge number of alternate degrees to the story.
