What's with the doom and gloom all the time starcade? That's sort of like saying Naruto can't be realistically licensed in America, and we all know that series is more popular than One Piece over here. The more popular the series, the more people want it, and the more people are going to try and get it for free. Someone just found the back door opened and walked right in to take the pie a little early.

I'm confident a breach like this is unlikely to occur; Funimation isn't ignorant in the ways of the market, and they know another mistake like this could spell OP death, especially with a touchy company like Toei, who everyone knows can't make a decent business decision regarding the American market to save their life. This is not to say Toei isn't an incredible studio. I hold their work in high regard. But they simply don't have the knack for commanding the American market.

As John said, this is just a bump in the road. If Toei pulled out, the Hong Kong pirates are the only ones standing to make a profit off of One Piece, because people will buy it or download it if legitimate DVDs aren't made available. I doubt Toei is stupid enough to set fire to the truckloads of money OP will generate for them over here.

You'd be right, GATS, except for one thing:

What assurance can Toei have that any future One Piece product will not be similarly compromised?

That's why I begin to question whether it can realistically be continued to be licensed in America.

Toei would be dumb to discontinue its deal with FUNimation, since FUNimation's the only reason OP makes any money in America in the first place, and since no one else is willing to bet on a 100+ ep series nowadays. It sounds like the former company's just using this as a pretext to shake down FUNimation for higher licensing fees.

I predict absolutely doomed.

In fact, that might not be the only title toasted through the arrogance of the fansubbers.

AND severe financial penalties for Funimation which might cripple it.

If the Japanese rightsholders have any sense they will negotiate contracts with the American distributors that specify financial penalties if the episodes are leaked prematurely. The penalties should be high enough to motivate FUNimation to hire someone who knows how to secure a web server.

LOL at funimation, so having faced embarrassment and shame once was not enough for them and now Phantom requiem for the phantom ep. 10 was leaked a day before it even aired in Japan. This has gone to a laughable matter now.

Japanese companies should stop giving their shows to the noobs @ funimation that first opposed streams then jumped in the ship and now only probe how incompetent they are...at the very least in this the streaming business.

Let only youtube and crunchy do the streaming.
