Japanese anime news site Presepe now hosts the first key visual and a variety of character images for studio AIC ASTA’s upcoming TV series adaptation of Suu Minazuki’s manga series Sora no Otoshimono (”Lost Property of the Sky”).

Gundam Unicorn to be Released Worldwide Simultaneously

Japanese news site animeanime.jp reports that the Sunrise animation studio plans a worldwide simultaneous release for its Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn anime production this winter. Details about the format of the Gundam UC anime and how it will be distributed have not been revealed.

Earlier this month the Nihon Keizai Newspaper reported that Bandai has plans to begin distributing unspecified Gundam anime online in 10 languages including English, German, and French later this year.

Live Action Wangan Midnight Theatrical Film Announced

Kodansha has formally announced a summer release of a live action Wangan Midnight theatrical feature. Michiharu Kusunoki’s urban street racing manga series has been adapted into ten live action video movies released from 1991 through 2001, a 2004 anime television series, and numerous arcade and console video games.

I’ve seen the first episode of Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood on Funimation’s official site and I was wondering if there are many second anime series that basically tell the original series’ story again, just tweaked, twisted, and even lengthened?

FUNimation Acquires Phantom TV

FUNimation is now streaming the first four episodes of the current Phantom ~Requiem For The Phantom~ television series. New weekly English subtitled episodes will be available as they’re aired in Japan. The series from studio Bee Train & director Koichi Mashimo is based on the 2000 visual novel game produced by Nitroplus. The game was released in America by Hirameki in 2003. The 3 episode OVA series adaptation from 2004 is distributed domestically by Media Blasters.

Nozomi Acquires Rental Magica

Nozomi Entertainment has formally announced its acquisition of distribution rights to the 2007 supernatural adventure anime television series Rental Magica. The 24 episode series about a young boy that runs a commercial “magic-for-hire” service is based on a light novel series by author Makoto Sanda & illustrator pako.

The series will be released in two 12 episode subtitled DVD boxed sets beginning this fall. Each DVD will offer viewers the choice of watching the series in “broadcast order,” the sequence in which the episodes were aired on Japanese television and are are sequenced on the Japanese DVD release, or in chronological order. Each DVD collection will also include a 100+ page booklet of supplemental art and information.

Crunchyroll to Host Anime from Marvelous Entertainment

Japanese production company Marvelous Entertainment has announced plans to begin international digital distribution of select anime titles through Crunchyroll. The producer of anime series including Gunslinger Girl, Murder Princess, Mushishi, & School Rumble will launch the controversial 2007 School Days anime television series on Crunchyroll later this spring, with appropriate viewer age restrictions implemented.

The School Days anime features sexual themes and graphic violence that caused some Japanese television networks to censor the series or cancel the broadcast of the series’ final episode because of its similarity to a concurrent real life murder.

Oblivion Island Teaser Released

The official homepage for Production I.G’s full CG anime film Oblivion Island: Haruka and the Magic Mirror (Hottarake no Shima – Haruka to Maho no Kagami) has opened, featuring a 30 second streaming trailer. The film is the story of a young girl who finds herself transported to the land where forgotten childhood keepsakes and trinkets live on. The film is scheduled for theatrical opening on August 22nd.

Adult PC game developer CIRCUS has announced that its upcoming fantasy RPG Valkyrie Complex will get an anime adaptation. The Valkyrie Complex game will be released on May 29th. Production and release details about the anime have not been revealed yet.

More Live Action Liar Game Announced

Weekly Young Jump Magazine has formally announced a second season and theatrical film continuation of the live action Liar Game television series. The initial TV series adaptation of Shinobu Kaitani’s psychological thriller manga aired in 2007. The cast of the first TV series will reprise their roles in the second TV series and movie.

Liar Game stars Nao Kanzaki, a chronically honest young woman who becomes unintentionally involved in a “liar game” which forces participants to trick other players. Winners are awarded while losers are burdened with large debts. Nao is forced to turn to skilled con-artist Shinichi Akiyama for help.

Oneechanbara Vortex Full Trailer Released

I’m an unabashed Oneechanbara fan, so I like bringing attention to the franchise at every opportunity. Twitch has uncovered the full trailer for “Oneechanbara the Movie VorteX,” a loose adaptation of the Xbox 360 Oneechanbara Vortex game and sequel to the 2008 first Oneechanbara movie. The Oneechanbara Vortex movie had a six night theatrical run in Shibuya earlier this month and will hit Japanese DVD on July 3.

Ask John: Does the American Market Affect Anime Content?

Question:
I was reading Schoolgirl Milky Crisis and Clements quotes someone at a convention panel saying that the US now accounts for half of the total anime market. I would think that would be too large a market segment to ignore when making content. How much influence does the eventual American market have on the content of anime? Is content changed here and there to avoid offending potential American DVD buyers and TV viewers? What sort of changes are made, if any are?
