I think MADHOUSE Studios is commendable in particular because they started out as a boutique studio. The were one of, if not the first, exclusive pen-for-hire studio when they launched. As the years have gone by, the studio has adapted and moved on in a whole bunch of creative ways, whether in contributing to other studios' productions, or eventually offering a slate of original programming (some of which were animated completely in-house).

But it's as John said; it's practically impossible to find just one or two or five studios even that are the best when our exposure to their work can be so narrow.

It would be hard to convince me that JC Staff has any single recognizable style, considering that they did IkkiTousen and Potemayo. They've produced some awesomely good stuff (e.g. Potemayo) and some utter trash (Maburaho IMHO). But I do think fondly of them for all the good times they've given me.

It's hard to find a studio that puts out consistently good (or identifiably characteristic) work. Kyoto, Ghibli and to a lesser degree Gainax are all that come to mind. IG can sometimes be identified because of their emphasis on realist animation. Sometimes you'll see a bit of animation that makes you say "wow it's so Madhouse" (Hellsing OAV, Death Note)... JC Staff has become easier to identify lately. Ufotable has a bit of a style.

But often what makes a production characteristic are the staff involved, and it's not like they'll always do work at only a single studio. Madhouse has impressed me the most lately because of their diverse output. At any given time it seems like they have a movie or three in the works from directors like Satoshi Kon and Mamoru Hosoda, and a funky offbeat series running on TV (most recently Casshern Sins).
