My Sweet Sunday Manga Online
Celebrated manga artists Rumiko Takahashi & Mitsuru Adachi’s collaborative one-shot manga short story “My Sweet Sunday” is now available online, in untranslated Japanese language, until May 24. The manga story was created to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Weekly Shonen Sunday magazine.

Samayoi Zakura Drama Announced

The Fuji TV network has announced plans for a May broadcast of a single episode live action adaptation of Mamora Goda’s 2008 and ongoing courtroom drama manga series Samayoi Zakura. The series is the story of a 28 year old unemployed anime fan who feels unsettled when he’s selected to sit on the jury of another 28 year old man very similar to himself that’s accused of murdering three housewives.

Metrocon Announces Guests

Tampa, Florida’s seventh annual Metrocon convention has announced its expected roster of guest attendees. Scheduled to appear are Abney Park, Greg Ayres, Illich Guardiola, Mark Hildreth, Scott McNeil, Kirby Morrow, Doug Smith, David Stanworth, and David Williams. This year’s convention will be held at the Tampa Convention Center on June 19-21.

Naruto Watch & Win Contest Announced

Viz Media will launch a weekly watch-and-win contest on its official Naruto.com website this Friday, March 27. Every week a new subtitled Naruto Shippuden episode will stream for free on the site. Viewers are invited to watch and take part in the contest by answering a trivia question about each new installment. Winners will be announced weekly and are eligible for a variety of prizes including action figures, apparel, & video games. The contest will continue weekly through September.

American Release Date for Ponyo Announced

Walt Disney Pictures has announced that director Hayao Miyazaki’s latest film, Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea, will open in American theatrical release on August 14 under the abbreviated American title “Ponyo.” The English dub features the voices of Frankie Jonas, Noah Cyrus, Cate Blanchett, Matt Damon, Tina Fey, Cloris Leachman, Liam Neeson, Lily Tomlin, and Betty White. The film was Japan’s highest grossing box office release of 2008.

FUNimation Acquires Ichi Movie

FUNimation has announced its acquisition of distribution rights to director Fumihiko Sori’s 2008 live action samurai action film Ichi. The movie is a re-make of late actor/director Shintaro Katsu’s long running Zatoichi film and television franchise that stars Haruka Ayase as a female version of the wandering blind swordsman. FUNimation will screen the film at the Hawaii International Film Festival on April 3 & 6, and at next month’s Japan Film Festival Los Angeles.

Kigurumikku V3 Trailer Available

Nico Nico Douga’s Anime Channel subsection now hosts a streaming trailer for AIC and creator/director Hisashi Saito’s upcoming parody anime OVA Kigurumikku V3. Unlike normal video hosted by Nico Nico Douga, this trailer does not require registration to view. Click the bottom right button (with the chick icon) to switch off scrolling comments.

The Kigurumikku V3 Best Episode Collection OVA will go on sale in Japan on May 20. (It’s called a “Best Episode Collection” because it’s designed to resemble a compilation of footage from a series, although there is no other Kigurumikku V3 anime.)
