Needless Anime in Development?

The Japanese Moon Phase Diary fan site reports the unconfirmed rumor that Imai Kami’s “bishoujo violence” action/comedy/sci-fi manga series Needless will be adapted into an anime television series directed by Masayuki Sakoi (Kamen no Maid Guy, Strawberry Panic!).

The 2004 and ongoing manga serial focuses on youngsters that have developed superhuman powers due to living in prohibited polluted areas of Japan following World War III.

If this is true, it certainly seems like a natural progression for director Sakoi to move from Kamen no Maid Guy to this.

Ask John: Is the Economy Affecting Niche Anime Licensing?

Monday, February 9th, 2009

Question:
Do you think the poor economy in the states will affect which anime titles will get licensed? I kinda see a trend in which only the super popular, or the Naruto-esque or Bleach-esque anime titles will get picked up for licenses, which is fine and dandy. But as a fan of niche anime with smaller fanbases, like Dennou Coil, Minami-ke, and more recently Kannagi to site some examples, I just don’t see any companies in the states risking the money to license smaller anime titles. I hope I’m wrong as North America has been deprived of some of the best anime series (or movies) the last couple of years.

Help Find Deborah Fourzan

The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children reports that 14-year-old Deborah Kalai Fourzan disappeared on Monday from her hometown of Tecumseh, Oklahoma, and may be traveling to California with 40-year-old Oklahoma resident James Reimer. According to Fourzan’s classmates, the pair planned to stop at several anime conventions on the way to California, including the Ikkicon anime convention scheduled for February 6 to 9 in Austin, Texas.

Fourzan is 5″2 and weighs 120 pounds. She has blue eyes, pierced ears, a birthmark on the back of her arm, and blond hair, but she may dye her hair black.

James \"Jim\" ReimerJames “Jim” Reimer is 5″10 and weighs 280 pounds. He has brown hair, blue eyes, and a beard, but he may shave his beard off.

Authorities advise anyone who sees the two individuals not to approach them, but to contact the Austin Police Department at 1-405-598-9305. A felony warrant is on file for Reimer for soliciting sexual contact with a minor.

Oklahoma City’s KOCO television station provides more information.

Domestic Manga Sales Down in 2008

Friday, February 6th, 2009

Comic industry observer ICv2 reports that 2008 manga sales in America were down roughly 17% compared to 2007. The decline is blamed on the current U.S. economic recession; diminished mainstream promotional exposure for manga and anime; changes in the Borders bookstore chain’s purchasing procedure; and the success of author Stephenie Meyer’s series of “Twilight” novels that have siphoned off female manga readers. However, despite a 17% drop in sales, domestic manga releases only declined by 9% from 2007 to 2008.
